These keyhole videos are excellent. Irving, TX has keyhole gardening classes.

Curious why wire around compost was not covered up above the soil? And maybe a vented lid with a dent in the center to funnel rain water. Where I live we only get an average of 28" of rain a year and that wont break down here. Appreciate any comments especially if I'm wrong.

I think that's one of the good things about gardening and using different ideas for different situations. In fact, even the concept of the keyhole garden was made or customized to help an area where things weren't as good as they could have been.
What I mean by that is if you think you have certain needs in your local area, it's certainly a great idea to adapt or change something from another design to benefit you specifically.
An example here is that as you look at more and more keyhole garden designs, you'll see that not everyone uses stone, or wire mesh for the compost tower. They used what they had on hand, or even made adjustments to stop other things, such as critters that they don't want in and around their compost, etc

What about mice? I think they can get started in winter and crawl to the middle and eat organic products there. It will be difficult to drive them away later. What do you think about it?

How is it holding out as far as the grass goes? The keyhole garden seems quite shallow and the grass may still be able to make a come back.

I think you should have covered the wood layer with soil before continuing the layering. You probably had your top layer of soil wash down quite a bit with this particular garden....
