      @@isaiahvoss I do agree that a lot of movies now do feel very much like stuff for TV (particularly during what are considered the dump months), but I have to agree with what Karsten said in that the main thing separating a home viewing and theater viewing is the immersion; why even bother going to the theater to see a movie as opposed to at home if that immersion is going to be interrupted occasionally by ads? Now, reduced ticket prices (like $8 instead of $10) for an extra 5 minutes worth of ads before the movie starts? That I would be willing to argue for. But I strongly disagree with ads interrupting the movie.

    • @harrisonrjjego
      @harrisonrjjego Месяц назад +4

      their point was about ad breaks throughout the film. i don’t agree with the idea however i reckon it would work because the ads before films are often missed or ignored by most filmgoers whereas breaks in the middle would be shown when the theatre is (theoretically) at its fullest for that showing and therefore the ad slots would be worth more. between those more expensive slots and the fact that there would still be paid showings that don’t have ad breaks i think it would work financially. they would need a system of rsvp tickets though to ensure they don’t have too many people showing up

    Napoleon Dynamite in my opinion is one of the best comedies ever made, and here's my take:
    It's a simple and a whole lot of nothing, but it's worth watching because of its quotes and it feels like the 70s more than the 2000s. Meanwhile I met Napoleon, Pedro, & Uncle Rico, the actors who played their roles in Napoleon Dynamite at a screening this year. Sometimes films out of nowhere can be the best films ever. The plot has stories that either go out of nowhere or its just a mystery except for Pedro running for class president. From Napoleon's made up stories, Kip talking to girls online, Uncle Rico's fake sales to the Time Machine Uncle Rico bought online are the best parts of the movie. The dialogue is the best because not only it's not horrible acting but it's how people talk in small towns. And I live in a small town but people use Midwest slangs at times. Besides it's a film in the middle of nowhere.

    • @indiesoku
      @indiesoku Месяц назад +6

      HARD AGREE!! It’s my personal favorite comedy ever. I wouldn’t say it’s the best, but it’s my personal favorite because of its simple nature and comforting tone. On a side note, I got to see the film at an exclusive screening/qna, with Jon, Efren, and Jon Gries, and after the questions everyone who dressed up for the show got invited on stage to do a dance off. I was invited by Efren since I dressed as Napoleon, and even though the other two didn’t say much Efren got to shake my hand and it made my night. I unfortunately didn’t win the contest, but at that point I didn’t care. I was on stage with napoleon, Pedro, and uncle Rico, and that was enough of a treat for me. I’ll forever cherish this movie and that memory forever.

    Here’s a weird take that I heard today outside my Anora screening.
    Two cinema majors from my university were calling the film the “anti-Jaws” because both focus on a chase and Anora is fun and exciting while they considered Jaws to be boring and tedious.
    One of them would go on to admit she refuses to watch Jaws because “it villainizes sharks.”

    • @selkiefluff
      @selkiefluff Месяц назад +12

      It's not Jaws' fault for what people took out of it and ran with tbh. The movie never pretends to be a shark documentary. If Cocaine Bear came out in pre-internet monoculture time I'm sure people would be villanizing bears too.

      @@thedigitalodometer945 Honestly, it’s kind of a vibe. Normally they’re local commercials, so you’ll get some pretty niche ads that are actually kind of funny. They play them in the time leading up to the showtime, and it’s mainly on in the background while you go on your phone or talk to your friends/family while the lights are still on. Honestly, if it helps theaters stay afloat a little bit, it’s not really a bad deal. It’s not like they’re interrupting the movie with ads. That would be fucking awful.

    I think video game trailers are just more exciting than movie trailers, seeing a sequel to a movie you like is far less exciting than seeing a sequel to a game you like

    • @Platitudinous9000
      @Platitudinous9000 Месяц назад +2

      this is, I think, partly a consequence of the game industry's secrecy. and I kinda get that, sometimes it can take a while to see if a video game project or prototype has the juice to be worth going into production as a full release, game development is unstable, I get it. but sometimes it's like Rockstar knowing that they can and will make a Grand Theft Auto VI and announcing the game's existence years in advance, because they know it looks good to just say "it's coming, we're taking the time to make it good, look forward to it when it's ready."
      really, the modern standard of The Video Game Reveal is a subject that could get its own video. like, you've got the cases where a game makes it far enough along into development that its publisher puts out a big announcement trailer and the game still gets cancelled anyway. or just kinda goes silent, I'm sorry Beyond Good and Evil fans but that sequel is 100% dead. and there's also the Concord case, which I've heard discussed on Castle Super Beast among other places, where Pat addresses how the game being announced just a few months before release is what he wishes games at large could be like, but he saw how disastrous that could turn out, because that game's announcement was met with the kind of large-scale apathy and disinterest that would have led to it being revamped or reworked in some way if only it wasn't announced just a few months before its release.
      maybe I gotta be the one to make a video about that. idk, this comment is longer than I intended it to be, we'll see how it goes

But TV glow feels like a larger expansion of that films themes themes for Schoenbrun’s filmography then add that in with the much more blatant Trans Allegory of Tv glow and the high school movie lense. The Oscars began as a studio marketing tool (and a way to soothe the egos of temperamental Hollywood stars) and that's really all they've ever been. It's a show. In the '80s I ran a single-screen independent "art-house" theater and we used to close down for a party on Oscar night. The next shindig will be our 40th -- but we hold them at people's houses. We enjoy it -- and each other's company -- but we don't take it seriously. The kinds of first-run indie and foreign-language new releases we showed back then ("Stop Making Sense," "Stranger Than Paradise," "The Fourth Man," "A Zed and Two Noughts," "Down By Law," "A Year of the Quiet Sun," "Therese" [Cavalier], "X - The Unheard Music") probably wouldn't even get theatrical releases today -- and our kinds of movies were never up for Oscars, anyway.

    There should be a offer to pay extra for a cinema viewing where people have to be silent or are thrown out. No phones allowed and there is security ready for people that break the rules. Too many times have I sat in a theatre where people just talk while the film is playing or someone's phone is buzzing constantly or there is a bright light in the corner of my eye. I'd even pay a whole £10 extra or more so we can fund the security guards salaries.

    I agree that Letterboxd is bad. i try to write reviews there, but it's hopeless. I'm not saying my reviews are amazing, but I try to actually write about the movie that I'm writing about and that's pretty rare on Letterboxd. Why should I even bother if reviews that are just a Spongebob quote get 100s of likes while no one reads what I have to say? There is even a very popular reviewer over there that does "vegan warnings". "Oh this one character drinks a milkshake in the first half of the movie", 56 likes, what the fuck even is this website?

    4:40 Is it though? I've sort of grown up being a FOX fan after being fans of shows like 24, Lethal Weapon, The X-Files and 9-1-1, and later graduated to being an FX fan. That just felt natural, especially because it was easy to know where I could watch a FOX or FX show on streaming (Hulu). I guess that doesn't apply as much to movies but I wouldn't say that's too bizarre of a way to approach media.

    Personal take, Movie's may artistically and financially waste a lot by making needless sequels, but 99.9% of TV shows are arguably a much bigger waste and concern, due to the studio system.
    Many get made with tens of thousands of dollars and can last for months in shooting and editing. The ones that typically are critically the best are underfunded (Breaking Bad and Walking Dead ((in the beginning)) ) and the ones that seem like the biggest waste of time get the most attention and money (Reality TV Shows and Mellow Dramas). Arrested Development, Twin Peaks, Stranger Things, and Dexter are all shows that were tainted at one point or another from the studio system, they've also regained their footing, but tainted none the less. When I watch certain parts, it feels like I'm watching a pickup truck drive with a wonky axel and am told that it's got "character," before taking it home. Writing for TV is also more of a job than an artistic endeavor from the results I've seen. I watched the first three episodes of The Penguin the other day and wanted to like it so bad, but the story was distastefully humanizing. I'm not following a hero, I'm following the fucking Penguin, a ruthless, greedy, grubby mob boss. Not saying I want him one-dimensional and maybe the show gets there, but so far it isn't promising. It lacks any of the same cinematic depth The Batman movie its attached to has and makes false attempts at recreating the atmosphere. I can forgive all that, but the plot is so predictable that I had a co-worker guess almost every aspect of the show by telling him it's the most predictable and, without fail, he knew every "twist" and "turn" of a show he had never seen. It's exactly the worst version I expected it to be. The variations of "bad" that television continues to weave into the fabric of our Netflix UI makes the business of trying anything anyone recommends to me a paddle boat ride on the river Styx. TV shows, whether you direct, write, act, or watch them, are the epitome of waste and the world would be a better place without them.

    I think World’s Fair is significantly better than TV Glow. It just has such a more cohesive idea and has such a stronger tone. The fear that a guy can exploit your whole life through text over the internet while it’s as casual as looking at your phone to span time while talking a shit is more horrifying than anything TV Glow does. Yes, I understand and feel the trans narrative, I am nb, I just think strictly as a movie it didn’t work quite as well.

    I can never get into any kind of film discourse because I like almost everything I watch. If I'm not liking something, I'll turn it off, simple as that. A movie is only bad to me if it is boring. Most of my favorite childhood films or even some run of the mill feel good dramas and biopics have abysmal ratings and were box office bombs, but I still like them over a lot of "good" films that bored me simply because they are not my taste.
