Living the dream! Love it brother. David Gillespie
Yah, we're doing it. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for keeping history alive.
Thanks for watching! Look around at the various playlists, you'll likely find something else you'll like.
Amazing!!!
It was a fun trip for sure.
Sounds like a lot of fun. I’m happy to see you all getting together. Cheers.
Thanks for watching! Yah, was a very splendid time. I got to test out the nap function of my chair, too!
Where could we find all this awesome gear like older tents and sleeping bags and well just everything?
I'd like to try this with my husband and children I think my children would love it.
Well maybe they wouldn't because they wouldn't have electronics or electricity lol
I like what you said just make it a worldwide event don't travel 100 miles just go camping where you are and if everyone does it, on the same day or weekend, you're more than likely to run into another camper doing the same thing.
Thank you for sharing. I think this is pretty cool.
KEEP ADVENTURING
GOD BLESS YOU
Most of the stuff you need is available as reproductions, and most of those are of very good quality. A good deal of it can be made if you have a sewing machine. Watch the Classic Camping Living History playlist for places where you can buy reproductions, and the Classic Camping MYOG (Make Your Own Gear) playlist for those. We'll be adding to both playlists on a regular basis. For stuff like cookware, old aluminum pots and pans can be found at Estate and Yard Sales. The History of Camping Gear playlist shows original artifacts that you can still find if you know what you're looking for. Your most expensive item would be a family sized tent, but smaller pup tents, etc. are relatively inexpensive. Thanks for watching!
Full immersion events for the public is a fun time and it’s great to see when the visitor “gets it”
Yes, but they're hard to do and sometimes they don't "get it".
I was camping with my youngest son and teaching him old ways as always. Way back in the Wyoming woods with our canvas cowboy tipi, by way of an awful two track road. Was having the time of our life until sunset. Somehow, someway here comes 4 trucks each hauling large house trailers. They pulled off the trail & illegally set up their little city. Truck lights, women yelling, dogs barking, kids screaming, generators, chainsaws and loud music and atv's destroyed the wooded silence and camping scenario. As miserable as it made us, it was probably a valuable lesson for my son to see the real difference between actual camping in nature vs bringing the city and destroying nature. My two sons will carry on the torch of classic camping, woodcraft, collecting and history long after I've gone.
Raising them right!
Enjoyed the video. Several years ago, we bought a canvas wedge civil war reactor tent and camped in it a few times. My questions are , do you use modern sleeping pads? And how do you keep perishable foods cool?
For sleeping pads, modern stuff is acceptable as long as its covered and not recognizable as modern, the same goes for coolers.
But as folks progress, they start using more period solutions such as folded wool blankets or homemade pads. On Friday I have a video coming out showing how I made a camping mattress for base camp. I have one much thinner for use on the trail made out of cotton batting sheets and bed ticking. I also have a period cooler made sometime in the 1920s.
Its all really a question of how and in which direction you progress in the hobby. The reasoning behind Bannerman's Camp is that there are a lot of reasonably priced reproductions of military gear from the Civil War to WW1 to allow folks easy entry into the hobby, and from there you decide which way you want to go. Making your own gear, or getting someone to make it for you, is also a cost effective way to progress.
Thanks for watching!
@@sargevining Did you know Steve watts? I think he was involved with this activity before his death.
@@moderntentcamping I know of Steve Watts, but never knew him. He and David Westcott pioneered this hobby and David's book Camping In The Old Style started me on my research journey. I tend to differ somewhat in approach as I lean towards trekking and Trail Life a bit more than the "comfortable camping" tack they took.
Sarge: I just had a creative explosion go off in my generally addled brain! Sarge you must-absolutely must-do a series on hoboing in the early Depression. The possibilities are almost limitless. Everyone finds the transient “Of Mice & Men” type workers, riding the rails, the Mulligan stews, the siding camps; everyone finds that interesting. If you’ll make the videos I promise to tweet every single one w/ video excerpts. (I have a large twitter account) God bless.
You'll like the video coming out tomorrow. I have a friend who is deep into a Hobo impression. I'll take this idea to him and see if he can teach me how to do one so we can tape it. Its a good idea, its part of the 1930s story. He's done Bonus Army as well.
@@sargevining I'm looking forward to it! To me, an important part of the hobo experience is 'the jungle' where the men meet at the end of their day.
Waypoint sent me over oh man I love the channel I subbed
Thanks for watching and subbing! Now you have two good channels for vintage camping stuff. Poke around in the playlists, you might find some of the older videos interesting.
ever try a Royce Tent it's in Kephard's Two vol book..Love your stuff and I'll working on mine called "Out Door Wizard' As I cave surgery coming up can't do much but I will be reviewing types of pocket knifes then fixed blades lock blades This I can do preop and recovery
Haven't tried a Royce, but I love making Classic gear and haven't tackled a tent yet, so might look into it. Let me know when you launch the channel, I'll give it a plug. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Look at all the old camping gear. You must of had a real great time. I know I would have. Nothing like camping. But to have the old camping gear. And all the different things to look at hell that would make it way better. See anyone from the future. That must of been a site. God bless . From Glenn CATT in Massachusetts.
We did have a splendid time, especially the boys who went out to the fishing hole. Thanks for watching!
Just like my 1060's boy scout camps.
Except the Scouts are older! Thanks for watching!
Sarge this was really cool to see this , wish we had a group where I live that would camp like this . I love old school 😊
Thanks for watching! Yep, Old School is cool. The great thing about Classic Camping is that there's no set size for how many folks in a camping trip. I went by myself until I found some other folks. Its kind of a "If you build it, they will come." kind of thing.
Hey Sarge! Im also from a suburb from right outside of Manchester and am on Bannerman! Is there anyone on it in New England
Not that I'm aware of. I've been down here in TX since '72 so I've kind of lost touch with the old home crowd. I'm shooting a video this weekend, I'll do a shout out to see if anybody watching is from round there---it'll be out first Friday in Nov. Thanks for watching!
