Sweden just announced it is sending some of the Archer-B variants to Ukraine, along with 155mm ammunition. This system is really good in a fluid battlefield situation where immediate fire is needed to support ground units, but in many of the cities in Ukraine, a regular towed piece of 155mm artillery is just as effective.
Trip’n... I was 13-B on a towed M-198 back in the day. That was the definition of a crew serve weapon. We had a hell of a rate of fire, but damn! This system is unbelievable...
What if I wanted to repurpose the artillery for other purposes? Like bring it earthward to shoot tanks, for instance, like the Germans did with their 88" flak? If that thing had an azimuth limit, then they would have been deprived of their best anti-tank weaponry.
Limits can be set for any direction, trajectory, tilt of vehicle, etc. Assuming the cab is 12:00, the gun could be set to fire from 1:00 to 11:00 from 0 degrees to 85 degrees.
Alan Feng It can still act as a anti-tank gun in any other direction. With or without the limit, it can't shoot through the cab so why does it matter if the limit prevents it from firing at the cab?
Why can't they just show it shooting multiple times in one sequence? Pretty hard to judge how quickly it can reload and fire again when multiple sequences are used
it's called shoot and scoot. you fire a round. pick up and move. it has a shorter range due to being vehicle mounted and having a smaller breach size and thus round size. plus it takes down to get a mission report and to follow up. thus they shoot, scoot and move. this limits incoming counter battery fire and let's them follow up without being destroyed.
@@Darion350 wow i thought it is much cheaper than the pzh 2000. The archer can shoot a little bit faster but the jiggeling after one shoot. And also it is not tracked and not really armoured like the pzh2000. And the replenishment compared to the pzh 2000 (60 rounds in 12 mins) is so slow. Now the only thing really going for the archer is the lower fuel consumption.
So far not that impressive. Getting ass kicked is not that amazing, not to mention maggots killing themselves after participating in one of the many still ongoing crusades, but good luck, this archer will probably help you, lul.
Indeed.. but to few units, and lack of personnel to operate them. A country like Sweden planned for 24 units.. range would need to be 1000 miles. But the gear of war itself is indeed good to kill with.
The English had nothing to do with the design of this system anymore than Indians has anything to do with the design of Jaguar, or, technological development.
Ready time, time to fire from stopping the truck, time to move after the shot, all these times are phenomenal assuming it is as accurate as a set piece! Shoot and move is a very good tactical advantage. Ask any sniper.

+Damian Wójcik It blows through it's magazine in two mins and 30 seconds, which is rather fast. First three rounds in 15 seconds. Six MRSI rounds. PZH 2000 is a better system, but also far more expensive. :)

This video is old, the gun they use is a pre-production gun. The guns currently in service is much faster in and out of action and the time to fill ammo is much shorter.
I don't think they're talking about the guns reloading speed, they are talking about the vehicle speed that the howitzer is mounted to, a clickbait title

+William Martin That's called MRSI: short for Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (pronounced "Mercy"), and it's a fairly recent innovation in artillery (within the last fifteen years, I think) that was only made possible by advances in computer systems.
+William Martin BTW: Thanks for confirming that; it's one of two capabilities that I was wondering about for this system (the other being Excalibur in-chamber programming capability)
luka lukif I understand your point of view, but I see systems like this as deterrence; if "Mister Bad Guy" is convinced he's going to lose, he'll be less inclined to start trouble. Historically, it's been true. If you'll think about it, the ultimate example of this philosophy was during the Cold War, while definitely hostile towards each other, NATO and the Warsaw Pact never went into hot war because of the fear of mutual nuclear annihilation. Aggressors are so because they believe they'll win; sometimes because they think they have God on their side, other times because they think their enemies are weak.
There's likely no way for a round to be fired in that position. I'm not sure how this particular howitzer works, but I'm assuming that the gun is mechanically disabled when stored for travel.
A little tip in case some people wonder why most self propelled artillery have shoot and scoot (and try to make this as fast as possible). In actual war against capable military where their artillery units basically will be shooting at each other, you DON'T stand still and shoot repeatedly from the same spot... doing so will get the artillery annihilated from the counter battery fire because modern military are PRETTY GOOD at determining where hostile artillery fire are coming from, and can be pretty fast at retaliating and if your artillery kept firing from the same spot and DON'T MOVE, then you will eat artillery shell from the opposing side who did not take kindly to you lobbing artillery shells at them. you shoot, you scoot... BEFORE the enemy artillery shell turn the spot you were just standing on into crater.
No, not necessarily. This doesn't have as many moving parts as a fighter jet for instance and modern fighters today rarely fall out of the sky due to maintenance failures. This particular vehicle is most likely built with very sturdy equipment to be able to absorb the shock of the artillery gun without breaking. So maintenance most likely won't be a problem and the military won't adopt it if it does have a maintenance issue. Companies build things like these and people automatically think these things are already adopted into militaries. This isn't the case. They are built, presented to militaries, militaries test them rigorously, then decide whether to adopt them or not.
Nice piece of kit. Like it has been said I would have like to have seen rapid-fire but for what I saw in the right terrain this thing could be invaluable.
sweden uses it so it is already in the hands of isis. (if you did not understand my joke it is about how many swedish people go to syria to fight for isis. one city named gothermburg has produced more isis warriors than the entire united states.)
Stop complaining about the barret facing at the drivers, it collapses and the barrel contracts meaning it can't be fired. And the propellant is stored separately from the munitions, they are only combined during firing.
+ToonandBBfan Yeah, and then counter-battery fire totally wrecks Annie, before air elements destroy it before somebody can put in the few days needed to move her.
+ToonandBBfan Using such a weapon would be frowned upon and the enemy would be entirely justified in using chemical and biological weapons in response.
Vuzuul In a chaotic battle situation even the alien technology in sci-fi movies has a high chance of malfunction. The point is can you fix it on the field or not.
playbossanova that is true :) and i wouldent say high chance, but a slight. but i also belive this howitzer is modular built, meaning if a part breaks its realyl simple to pick it out and change.
Actually, the fastest Howitzer/Artillery in the world (of course by ROF, not by driving speed, which is quite irrelevant) is the german Panzerhaubitze 2000 with a cadence of 3 Rounds in 10 seconds in fast firing or 10 shots in 1 minute. In continuous firing it reaches 3 shots per minute due to the thermal maximum of the barrel (it can't cool down fast enough, so this is the limiting factor) and hold this rate for all of its ammo capacity
@David C by flak i meant an aa gun, you don't need to insult me for using a well-known word for high caliber AA. Also, I don't say that it can't shoot APDS-FS or HEAT-FS. It would just be incredibly unpractical at such angles and ranges

I saw an M109 at a firepower demonstration do that at Larkhill in 1972.
Most modern NATO 155mm do the same I.e. each gun can put 3 rounds on target at the sale instant through computerised elevation changes when the command Fire For Effect is given. Thus one battery can do way more damage than, say, a 2S1 battery.

the driver would be fucked if it misfired in the down position.
Logically there should be a a number of redundant failsafe system.
Azimuth limits prevent weapons from "shooting themselves". Unfortunately for Jabba the Hutt, he didn't include them on his Sail barge.

But the gear of war itself is indeed good to kill with.
True. But this artillery system was made by England.
Back Nforth no it wasn't. It was developed and built in Karlskoga, Sweden, by BAE bofors. The only English part of it is BAE.
The English had nothing to do with the design of this system anymore than Indians has anything to do with the design of Jaguar, or, technological development.

BEFORE the enemy artillery shell turn the spot you were just standing on into crater.
doesn't this mean more maintanence, more parts...more opportunity for malfunctions even if you pmcs daily?
yes it does
The system is too new and not battletested to say, but Swedes generally make reliable and easily maintained machinery, just look at volvos...
Oh no, you didnt xD
The truck is based off of a Volvo articulated dump truck. Even if the gun fails the truck will be more than enough to get everyone out and to safety.
RUclips algorithm thinks I'm the market for a shoot and scoot artillery system. Cool.
