cbilton.creator-spring.com In a previous full instructional guide I made a shank for a large collet and was keen to show how its possible to make a split shoulder ring shank with out any soldering.
I dislike shanks that have been filed down then had a piece of metal added on top then soldered in to position. I know its possible and it can work ok sometimes I used to do it before I knew better! However for me now, after years of experience being pushed towards ability to make high quality pieces it seems a bodge job. Filing shapes out of a shank then soldering pieces back on with the solder join running from one side to the other of the ring is such a liability.
When making jewellery worth many thousands of pounds, a method that finishes the piece without solder joins all over it is worth using.

    I have recently join Patreon!
This channel has potential to grow in to a great archive of jewellers knowledge with your help.
With patrons support I will be able to offer far more information than I am currently able to.
With nearly 25 years of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level found in High Street jewellers workshops.
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by actual Bond Street shop model makers and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter RUclips channel and now after nearly 1 year of uploading video guides, its time to take it up a level.
My ambition is to be able to make instructional videos with not just silver, but gold and platinum also. Some proper jewellers soldering equipment will enable me to create much more special pieces too! This will open up a whole new world of information I have to share.
There are many specific methods and techniques used for the different precious metals and knowledge about gemstones I can teach that will never enter my videos unless I am actually working with them.
If you may be interested in becoming a patron and supporting the channel to help it grow please click the link below to go to the Patreon website and find out about all the benefits that come with being a Diamond Mounter patron.

With this channel I will share with you methods and techniques I have learned over the previous 24 years as a professional jeweller.
I specialize in high end bespoke pieces made the old fashioned way by hand.
I wish to document everything I know, continue to learn and make accessible to everyone rare skills and techniques only usually taught in high security jewellers workshops.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge & experience. There is a lot of misinformation available online regarding how to make hand fabricated fine jewellery.

Thanks again for making these videos. As a newbie, adding the measurements of your metals when beginning and finishing could help me work along.

Loving your channel Chris! I’m old school too having trained as a diamond mounter from 1978.
Thinking out loud about inspiration for your future videos that your subscribers would like....
Cuttlefish casting, although you probably started with delft clay?
String polishing in those hard to get to bits.
Ring sizing and putting a piece in getting the angles correct of the inserted piece so it doesn’t ping out.
Pulling down wire without a draw bench 💪
Melting up old bits of customers old gold and making say a new wedding ring.
Keep up the good work, love it!
Liked the collet making from a disc.. never thought of that one.
    Brilliant... beats Netflix!

String polishing video has already been made! Patrons to the channel have already seen it but I think it will public on youtube in a few days. I want to do ring sizing advice videos but Im still only working in silver. Working on a gold or platinum ring I can share a lot more info. Maybe I will just do a silver one and explain the differences.

When you talk about using a grinder to alter the pliers, I’m assuming you must have to disassemble them, grind them then reassemble? Could you please clarify what you mean for us newbies out here pretty please
/ or better yet make some how to videos for how you alter and create tools? Please please and thank you for all that you are doing.

Yes I can make a video about this. I didnt take my pliers apart but if its possible itll be easier to grind the curve

I want to have my wedding ring and engagement ring changed to a shank ring . Do you have to redo the entire rings to achieve the shank style

further to my first comment doing it that way you now have three solder joints to hide all in one location therefor making the ring weaker, however you make it there are still solder joints to contend with, your no soldering is blown right out the window even the best jeweller in the world will leave the smallest dent no matter what it is unavoidable have a look under a microscope its bloody amazing.
