Johannesburg - The Mayibuye iAfrika Concert is thrilled to announce exciting additions to its already legendary lineup for the upcoming two-day celebration marking 30 years of South African democracy. Set to take place on 24 and 25 May, the extended show will not only honour South Africa’s democracy but also showcase Africa’s diverse musical heritage, paying special tribute to African freedom songs and their composers.
Joining the lineup is the renowned Olufemi ‘Femi’ Koya, known for his rich blend of West and South African nostalgic afrobeat sounds. Femi’s energetic performances and unique musical style promise to be a special treat alongside the legendary lineup featuring Ringo, Hotstix Mabuse, Mahotella Queens, Hope Masike, Simphiwe Dana and Siphokazi.
"We are thrilled to have our incredible African brother join us for this special occasion," said Billy Monama, the visionary behind the Mayibuye iAfrika Concert. "His music embodies the spirit of Africa’s history and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of music to inspire, uplift, and unite Africans and the world."
Mayibuye iAfrika will be hosted in partnership with the internationally renowned Joburg Theatre, offering audiences versatile performances on the Nelson Mandela stage. The event sold out last year and the organisers expect the same this year, with MC’s Nothemba Madumo and Kgomotso ‘KG’ Moeketsi also being added to the line-up.
“I am immensely proud to welcome the triumphant return of the Mayibuye iAfrika Concert to our iconic Nelson Mandela Stage. This production stands as a beacon of unity, commemorating 30 years of South African democracy through the universal language of music. With a legendary lineup and an extended program, this year's concert promises to be a profound testament to our nation's journey towards freedom and cultural richness,” said James Ngcobo, Artistic Director of Joburg City Theatres. “We look forward to celebrating our heritage, embracing diversity, and honouring the indomitable spirit of South Africa."
The concert will showcase and celebrate different generations of performers who have pioneered and continued the work of raising awareness of ubuntu through music composition and performance, paying special homage to those who laid the musical foundation for the soundtrack of the African liberation journey. Audiences can expect a truly immersive and unforgettable musical experience that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Africa.
“It will be a beautiful gathering of musicians who will be paying tribute to the composers who were the mouthpiece for our people during the struggle to remind Africans of who we are and where we come from,” concludes Billy.
