At the time when this song was filmed James was literally saying goodbye to his dad who hadn’t found a matching donor yet for a kidney transplant but when this video hit RUclips,a distant cousin saw the video, got tested and found that he was a match and thus why James dad is still alive and well today. They both served as officers in the British Army and are super close. The producers wanted to use auto tone for this but JB refused as he wanted people to feel the emotion on the words and song.Everyone was crying when they shot the video only for when they stopped, his dad said,” why is everyone crying am still alive. Also this was all one take 💯

James recorded this in one take with his father sitting next to him. The record company wanted to autotune but James refused as he wanted the raw emotion. All the crew and band were in tears during the take but his father held it together during the recording and asked why they were all crying as he was still alive.

"I'm not your son, you're not my father" is a way for James Blunt to tell his father that he does not have to live up to his role as father, he does not need to protect his son from the sadness and the hurt... they are just two grown men capable of being honest with each other about what is going on with his dad. But then he breaks down and tells his dad that he doesn't have to worry, he is now strong enough to chase the monsters away (fear, sadness, death). As with most father son relationships, there will be times (some more than others) where they are at odds, where each make mistakes that can lead to month if not years of separation, but in the end, love holds them together, and when it really matters, they will be there for each other. Mistakes forgiven, mistakes forgotten.

Not really, "I'm not your son, you're not my father" just means the father/son dynamic comes secondary now that they are both "grown men saying goodbye." It's like having a beer with your dad, who is now your friend.

But that doesn't dim the heartbreakingly clear strong beautiful message of deep respect & love that this man feels for his father. 'I folded your clothes on the chair '..to me.. says it all. ✌

Both men were in the military. Once when James was leaving on deployment, his father said "I'm not your father, you're not my son, we're just two men saying goodbye" as a form of respect. That line is where this song came from. Then when Father was diagnosed with terminal kidney disease, the song came together to raise awareness. Two types of people really cry hard at this song - those who have a great relationship with their Dad, and the ones who cry harder? The ones who do not have a close relationship, because they can see what it might be like to have such love and respect. The huge awareness this song caused actually caused a distant relative to appear and donate a kidney to Dad who is well to this day. This IS the real dad in the video. The song was recorded in a studio with no video. Later it took three takes to recorde the video, lip synched, all done with dad. But James said lip synched or not, the emotions were real. If this one doesn't make you cry snot bubbles, time to get as checkup from the neckup. Dead or alive, good relationship or not, we all have fathers. This song embodies the love and then the hurt of loss all in one masterful way. I've seen 38 reaction videos to this song in 5 days and in each one it pretty much wrecked the video host, and of course, commenters.

My father died in my arms from a massive heart attack. That was 20 years ago. Literally 4 hours before he passed, we had a conversation where we said all the things left unsaid. I don’t know why. I will never forget watching my mothers heart break into a million pieces in front of me as she was saying her last goodbye in the hospital after they worked on him for 45 minutes trying to rouse him. They never got him back. I knew when he left my house in that ambulance that it was the last time I saw him alive.
Later that night, I was in shock, there was a warmth that came over me while I was thinking of him and I finally fell asleep.
    This song is beautiful.

James Blunt Monsters - James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually fine a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. I don't know how James managed to keep himself together so well, but it was so damn powerful and obviously deeply emotional for him.

The "i'm not your son, you're not my father" line-he's just saying they are WAY more than that. They are best friends, have been all their lives. "t's my turn to chase the monsters away" is simply a throwback to when we were kids, and afraid of the dark, and Daddy would come and chase the monsters away. Daddy is dying of Kidney disease. Death can be scary. James is saying he'll be there for him, don't be scared. (Thank God for a real-life happy ending.) This is one of the most moving songs I have ever heard.

Both the lines “you’re not my son/father” and “no need to forgive/forget, I know your mistakes and you know mine” to me just represent that in the moment, their souls are laid bare and they’re just two men who love each other being open and vulnerable. There’s no need for you to take on the role of being my dad right now, in fact, I’m able to comfort and protect you this time. There’s no need to have any apologies or regrets because we both understand each other and it’s only love.

The thing is, they didn't shed a tear because they are stopping, starting and analysing practically every 15 seconds. Like run the song, run it all and THEN analyse after you have watched the whole thing, THEN give your thoughts and reactions. Because when you stop and start, it kills the rhythm, the whole ambience of the song and kills the pacing.
This is the classic showing of OVERANALYSING something to the point of losing its impact.

On the new track, James reflects, “Monsters is a song for my father who I idolized as a child, has been my best friend through adult life, and now urgently needs an O positive kidney donor.”
Speaking to Yorkshire Post, James delves deeper; “My father and I, we love each other and he’s been the most amazing father to me all my life and we know the bond that we have, but if you have a limited amount of time with that person on this Earth, then there’s some other things that I, as a songwriter, feel it would be a good time to say.
“That’s why the words to Monsters say, ‘I’m not your son, and you’re not my father, we’re just two grown men saying goodbye, we need to forgive and we need to forget, I know your mistakes and you know mine.’
“Those are kind of risky things to say because you hope they’re not misunderstood or taken the wrong way, but they say something deeper than just ‘I love you, you’re my father, I love you as my friend as well’.”
“But at the same time, at the other end of the scale, I have a new young family, and so I thought of life playing out in front of me. And with that circle of life, that’s a real huge inspiration to write this album.”

James and his father( the older man in the video who had stage 4 renal failure ) both served on active duty in the army. This song was done in one take and by the end everybody except his father was crying. Later James refused to let them clean the track up so we get all the emotion in his voice. It is a relief to know his father is alive because of this song a distant relative saw it and donated his kidney.

James Blunt's father, Charles, himself a kidney donor, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Blunt wrote "Monsters" to "express his feelings about his father and his illness, almost as if it's a touching farewell to his father".
    --------------
    Further info,
James Blunt wrote this song for his father, Charles Blount, a former cavalry officer in the 13th/18th Royal Hussars, helicopter pilot and colonel in the Army Air Corps. His dad has stage four chronic kidney disease, and this minor-key piano ballad is a tear-stained tribute to his sick father.
    I'm not your son
    You're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
    No need to forgive
    No need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
Blunt explained to Apple Music: "I idolized this man throughout my childhood, but as we grew older, I realized that he had his own fallibilities, and that's an awesome thing to see because you suddenly can become friends then. And then, obviously, as parents get older, the responsibility starts to weigh on the children that look after them. Although that can be painful, there's something beautiful about it, too."

He wrote it as a living eulogy to his father. There was nothing left unsaid. "It's my turn to chase the monsters away" is a reference to dads comforting their children at night if they are scared of the dark. The dads chase the monsters away. Now, with his dad dying and probably scared, he is to be the one who is going to chase the monsters away for his father.
They expected that his father would die within a month or so from kidney disease. None of the family were a match to give him a kidney.
As he decided to donate all the proceeds to kidney research it was shown on television and he did interviews about it. Someone they didn't know saw it and realised that he looked a lot like James' dad and had a similar last name. It was Blount, not Blunt. He contacted one of the television channels and asked if he could contact them. It turned out that James Blunt's name is actually Blount and the person was actually a distant cousin. He was tested and was a match and gave James' dad one of his kidneys.

  • @TimHaston

It’s raw humanity. It’s playing with the imagery of a child being scared of monsters in the dark. And the dad taking care of his children. Late in life the dad fears the dark of eternal sleep. The I’m not your son, your not my father is an effort for the son to be an equal, to put past issue behind him and just care for his dad. But a few lyrics later he calls him daddy, that which a young child would. Even in his stepping up to be strong for his dad he feels the need to lean on daddy.
While your sleeping, I hope to make you proud, so daddy won’t you just close your eyes. It’s my turn to chase the monsters away.
That turn of phrase so powerful. It could literally being the dad afraid to go to sleep for fear of the monster of death. The son comforting him, I will be the last one and leave a light on. Don’t fear. It could also be don’t be afraid to pass.
I’ve watched this video hundreds of times. It only gets stronger.
Last comment. Let it play til the end. His dad reaches and grabs his arm. Even in the sons stepping up to care for him, he still is being daddy caring for his son.

I just love this song, it's so beautiful. Like, I never had a relationship with my father so that part of my life was filled by my mother but it still hits hard. As for "I'm not your son, you're not my father..." I always took that as him saying to his dad that they were no longer 'just' those things to each other, they had become far more than that by this point.
It might also bear saying that both James and his father served in the British Army (James ended as a Captain in the Life Guards, Charles as a Colonel in the Army Air Corps) and kinda due to that, Charles was never really *openly* demonstrative with his affection (though there was never any actual doubt he loved his kids) and James kinda learned that same thing from his dad, so they apparently never actually said "I love you" to each other, and so this song was the closest to openly voicing that love that he'd been able to get.

The song was a poem written by James's sister when they discovered their father had stage 4 cancer. James adapted the poem, inserting the "father, son line! The video was captured in one take giving it that real authentic, raw pull on the emotions, clearly audible in his voice.
This video was actually the catalyst for finding a living donor and saving his fathers life. James donated all of the royalties to "Help for Heroes" a charity dedicated to helping British Army veterans!

Before becoming a singing star James was a captain in the Life Guards, part of the Household Cavalry and a tank commander. deployed to Kosovo. His father was a army helicopter pilot and a colonel. Yes his father was dying of kidney failure and in need of a kidney transplant. And yes that's his father sitting there. Thankfully after this was released, a distant relative was found of the right blood type and the operation became possible. Incidentally James was responsible for preventing a third world war by refusing to to obey a command to attack.

The "You are not my father, I am not your son" is as you said poetic. In this case it is clear set. In the beginning father son relationship is clear I am the father and you are the child. When you get older and both aged, you still are father and son, but more at an intellectual capacity. Where father is not law anymore, but someone you can reason with as an equal.
Yes. He will always be your father, but now you also have experience and you can "chat".
So this part of the song comes to the end of the relationship where they are "equals". Both grown men...
Saying goodbye... thus the end of ones life has come.
Edit "It's my turn to chase the monsters away."
In childhood your dad was always there when you were scared. The "monsters" anything that scares you, may it be a shadow in the closet, or a spider, or something that messes up your life. He was the one that scared it away.
"It's my turn to chase the monsters away"
Now when the dad is old and the monster in this case being death looming, he is now the one that can comfort his father and chase the scaredness away.

I think you have to have spent time when you know your dad is dying. My dad was hallucinating towards the end and thought there were monsters under his hospital bed. And it was my time to tell him not to worry. Like when your dad chased the monsters away when you couldn’t sleep as a child.

This is James’s dad in the video. He was dying here. The son is the protector now. His dad is dying from stage 4 kidney disease when this video was made. His dad needed a kidney and a match had not been found until this video and a distant cousin came forward and was a match and donated a kidney :). James and his dad were close but both were military men and feelings were not always easy for them. James’s feeling we’re so raw in this video

They served in the military together. The line: Im not your son, you're not my father was something similar to what his father said in a speech right before they were going to a war zone where they could both die. His dad had donated a kidney and then some years later developed stage 4 kidney disease and tbey thought he was going to die. A distant cousin saw this vid on t.v and contacted them to donate a kidney, so dad ended up surviving.

This was my introduction to James Blunt. Because of my ongoing strained relationship with my dad, it hits me when I see it (not as much as just hearing it because of visual distractions.
As in art, each person will bring their life experience to how they perceive the song. I can’t help tear up , but I get how it wouldn’t effect others the same. I didn’t learn the story until now, but for me it’s immaterial to its impact on me.

Basically the dad knows he is dying, he is saying goodbye to him, he loves his for who he is and his dad loves him for who he is. The love isnt just because they are father and son, it's because they both have respect for eachother and love eachother. Hes saying there isnt a need to be scared anymore, he will look after him now and make sure his dad isnt scared of dying as hes there to look after him like his dad was when he was young

What I get from this song is James Blunt told his father that this time is for him (JB) to look after his dad.
As a kid . Sometimes we were afraid of the monster in our bed room. Asking mum or dad to read a bed story and accompany us till we were asleep.
Back to him; when Dad is not capable to look after kids anymore because getting older or dying then time has gone ...to look after him. No need to worry, no need to ask forgiveness... Just sleep well, daddy. This time is for us to look after you .❤

Yes, it is his dad beside him. He is dying from kidney disease as a matching donor cannot be found. Thankfully, once this video was released, a distant cousin contacted them and was a match. James and his father are still enjoying each other's company because of a successful kidney transplant - thanks to this video.

James and his father had been high ranking officers in the British army, his father a Colonel and James a Captain, James was in Kosovo as a tank commander and saw action.
The stiff upper lip is what us brits say when emotions must be kept in check and not shown, being in the forces that's the case, it shows how much distress James was in here.
His father so I've read only had one kidney, he'd been a live donor himself and it was failing, stage 4 kidney disease.
James and his siblings were tested and not a match, his father also has type 0 blood, he was on the kidney donor waiting list but really there was no hope.
James wrote this song when his father told him he was terminally ill
The last verse to me is heartbreaking, James is telling his father he'll be with him till his last breath so he won't be alone, ie Breathe the last words, you can feel my hand on your arm, I'll be the last one so I'll leave the light on, let their be no darkness in your heart.
The good news is after this video was released, a distant cousin was tested and a match, a live donor, the operations were done and his father is still alive and doing well, 2 very brave men.
James father's name is Charles Blount, the live donors Charles Blount, James dropped the 0 to Blunt because he felt the name was to posh.
Heartbreaking but with a wonderful ending
    Well done 👏👏

That is his dad, Charles. The thing to remember is that James and his dad are upper class (posh) hence why you hear the poshness of his voice coming through. Both of them previously served in the British Army as officers. James was a Captain and his dad was a Colonel. James served in the Kosovo war (in the Balkans) in '99, and the line, "we are just two grown men saying goodbye" is what James said to his dad as he was being shipped off. Being they are upper class, they tend to be very stoic, hence why by the end James as tears streaming down his cheeks, his dad places his hand on his arm. This is very typical behaviour of the upper class.
After this record was released, James had ALL proceeds go to a British charity; Help For Heroes, which caters to the veterans.

Something they talk about a lot in counseling (and in church) is that forgiveness has nothing to do with the person you're trying to forgive. It's not about forgetting what they other person did, it's about releasing yourself from the hold of pain and resentment and to help you heal and move on from it. And if they find healing in it too, that's a by product. But it's not the point of forgiveness.
That said, James Blunt had no issue or tension with his father. The line was a reversal of what his father said to him when they deployed (they were both in the British military) "I'm not your father, you're not my son. We're just two grown men saying good-bye". James knew it would likely be misunderstood by the average listener but that his father would understand and the song was for his father.

I saw an interview with James Blunt, and he explained that both he and his Dad are army veterans, so being openly emotional was not the done thing in their family. It explains a lot about how stoic the Dad is in the video. You'd never know how poorly he was at that time by watching him.

I think that is the disctinction of an artist from a popstar or a musician .
