    I heard this song for the first time in the hospital garage in the morning after spending the night with my step-dad at the hospital after his heart attack and they found he had stage 4 lung cancer.
    We both knew he didn't have a chance, and we talked for most of the night. I told him how much I appreciated him, loved him, and respected him for treating me as his flesh and blood even after he and my mom split up years before, and even mentioned the Brad Paisley song; "He Didn't Have to Be" and played it for him.
    When I got in the car in the morning to go home, this song came on the radio. It absolutely 100% fucking broke me. He died a few weeks later and I'm so glad I got to tell him everything i flt before he died.

    James and his father were both officers in the British military. I heard James donated all the proceeds from this amazing song to the wonderful UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much fantastic work with ex-servicemen & women, so it was a lovely thing to do. 🙋‍♂ ❤

    After James recorded this song, a distant cousin heard it and donated the very much needed kidney, his father is alive and doing just fine, at least that's what I've read in many of the comments. This song really hits home, I was born 805 deaf and my mom gave me to my grandparents, they were wonderful to me. My grandpa died when I was 12 and it was just grandma, my aunt and I, my 3 younger brothers with my mom and stepdad. When grandma got older, she became diabetic and went blind, my aunt took care of her while I was in school, then I'd get home, and my aunt would go to work. Grandma ended up on dialysis, by that time I was in my 30's, I took care of her just like she had taken care of me all my life, she was the most important person in my life, my whole world evolved around her. After 11 years on dialysis, her little heart gave out, she died at home like she wanted, we had come full circle.

      God Bless you and your family. I just spent the last 4 years taking care of my elderly parents. They are both gone now but I was able to keep them both at home, where they passed. It was probably the hardest thing I've ever done but a gift to me at the same time. I am forever grateful to have been able to do that~ not everyone has that choice. The part about him folding his father's clothes and setting them on the chair really gets to me because I did that with my dad every night. Beautiful, beautiful song, James Blunt.

    This was the first time that James sang the song to his dad. They did it in one take and apparently at the end of filming everyone was in tears from the crew. James' dad being from the generation of the British Stiff Upper Lip and being ex Military Officer like James, apparently said *What's everyone crying for, I'm Not dead yet*
    Thinking of your friend and his dad. It's hard when a parent is ill. I lost my dad last year aged 84 after suffering from a lung condition. I watched this video a few times since he passed. Always tears, but They are healing as are memories.

    This song rips my heart out, beautiful but heart wrenching. I know the story behind this song and I am ecstatic with outcome. I wished so much to have that time to say goodbye to my father. He disappeared for 10 days, some people on a snowmobile found his frozen body. I search as did all my family but we never found him. He died alone and scared and that is something I can never forgive myself for. We had our issues with each other and for a 10 year period we never spoke but with time we reached out to each other and a beautiful relationship blossomed from that and we became so close I swear at times or hearts beat as one. I want to dedicate this song to my Dad, an amazing person that helped me grow into a respectful and caring person. Alfred T Calder, you are my hero and always will be.

    This song was hard for me. I lost my Dad in 2006 to colon cancer. He was in the hospital after surgery talking and laughing one night and the next morning I was racing to get there to hold his hand when he took his last breath.
    I lost my Mom to Alzheimers 15 years before she died in 2018. Losing your parents is hard. God is gonna have to drag me away from my kids kicking and screaming.

    Story I heard is that when James would deploy his father, also a military man, would say that to him.. to be strong for each other. I think a lot of folks think it means that they aren't close, but in fact it's just the opposite.

  • @kiwigirljacks
    @kiwigirljacks 7 месяцев назад +12

    In my opinion… the part “I’m not your son, you’re not my father, we’re just two grown men saying goodbye” is about the fact that the relationship has grown and changed as he’s no longer a child. We aren’t just that dynamic any more. We are both men, we can relate as men and can understand each other on a different level. And as men, friends, father and son.. we can say goodbye without any regrets.

    This song of James Blunt’s, “Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, & battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........

    This and Johnny Cash HURT that he filmed not long before his death ... are 2 songs that make me cry, but I still listen to them again and again. This song attracted the attention of a distant relative and James dad got a last minute kidney transplant. So the song saved his life. That is James dad in the video. They were both in the army. I think James did 2 tours. His dad was a career soldier.

    I don't know how anyone can not be touched by this song. All children will go through this at one time in their life with someone they love. Not only do I think of my father who passed when I was 19, but now, my husband has dementia and it tears me up even more with him. Life and living is difficult and aging is not for the faint of heart. Thanks for being you and keeping it real. Prayers to you and your friend.

  • @karenstrong8887

    It is hard to sing when you really cry. This was one take, no auto tune and his Dad agreed to be in it for James because he only had a couple of weeks left. His Dad was a rare match and had donated one of his kidneys to someone years earlier. James and his sisters were not a match. By releasing this song a first cousin of his Dad that no one knew about came forward. He even shared his Dads name, Charles. He was a match. His Dad is doing great now. If you watch the newer video of James playing the piano and singing this. There is nowhere near the emotion of this version.
    You are lovely and it is okay to feel. Thank you.

    Not having your father around is the harshest way to "lose" a father. Not your fault any more than cancer would be. The "I'm not you son, you're not my father" is used to explain that they have also become adults and equals

    How are you doing through all of this? You know the man and might I say you feel pretty close to him so he is like a father to you in some way, I hope he lives close enough to you so that you can go visit him! You will both feel better!

    • @polarbearhero9803
      @polarbearhero9803 Месяц назад

      It wasn’t so much that a match didn’t exist as it was his dad didn’t qualify for a high enough place on the transplant list to get a cadaver organ. Age was the main factor. They James said he was near the bottom of the list in England. Between age and the rarity of his blood type (which made far fewer organs appropriate for him) his only hope would be a live donor donation meant only for him.

    So of course it comes to mind sometimes, that it will be horrible if a parent dies, but it always feels sooo far away. Almost like u have an eternity left with them.
    Hearing a song like this already hits hard, but in the end its just a glimpse of how it is.
    Until that it almost feels like its impossible that something bad will happen to them, because they are something like superior.
    At least i can say this for sure about my father. He always was the person i wanna be when im old, but i always knew thats close to impossible, because he is such a good hearted, smart and strong person. He feels unreachable and he always made everything right in my books. The things what some people would call mistakes or fails are not worth mentioning to me even.
    Everything is perfectly fine. That always kept on going and then he told us that he has cancer. He kept on fighting and being as strong as possible even tho he had a lot of pain.. A real warrior... Nobody believed its possible that he can die from that. Everybody was like: He surely will make it, theres no doubt about it.
    And then boom... It still somehow felt like out of nowhere.. He died in March 2023.
    That shocked me and everybody around him to the core. That was BY FAR the most awful thing what happend in my life. And this isnt about me, that my favourite person is gone and therefor i have to suffer. Its about that HIS life ended even tho i know 100% he would have enjoyed life so much if this damn cancer wouldnt have been a thing. Thats the heart wrenching thing.
    Since that, there wasnt a single day where i didnt think about him and it doesnt get easier really, but it gets a habit pretty much. U get used to that horrible situation and every now and then it hits u like truck again and again.
    But yea.. As James says... U do your best to make him proud and to enjoy your life as good as possible, because thats for sure how he wants it to be. So i will fight too until im forced to close my eyes forever. Thats SO important because of MANY other reasons too.

    His father did get the kidney he needed. The guy who donated the kidney, remarkably, had the same name as his dad, Charles Blount. He was a distant cousin. Being ‘very nervous’ that doctors would get confused about which Charles was donating the kidney and which was receiving it, James revealed that when they went onto the operating table … James wrote “giver” on one forehead in marker pen, and “taker” on his dad’s, just to make sure they absolutely got the right bodies.

    James ‘s sister actually wrote these words, for their dad. And James put them into the song, during a very difficult time as they thought this was the end. Lucky he received a kidney which saved him. I don’t think anyone could get through this without shedding a tear or 2.

    Il existe une chose plus triste que de perdre son père, c'est de ne pas l'avoir connu .... la même misère pour ceux qui n'ont pas eu le bonheur d'avoir des frères et des soeurs

    By saying I'm not your son, your not my father it takes out the emotions of a father/son saying goodbye where they wont dwell on the past. It's just time to love each other as they say goodbye.

    Hey J,no sense trying to hold back the tears on this one, cause it's as real as it gets! When he says,I'm not your son, you're not my father,we're just two grown men saying goodbye,I believe he is purposely downplaying their relationship in words,to try to make it more manageable, realizing his dad,and best friend is going to pass soon. This is his real dad in the video, and amazingly his father lived.I am sending prayers right now for your friend and his dad.I believe that when all of us take our last breaths someday, our love that we shared NEVER dies❣
