  • White homeowners are conned into selling their houses for cheap because a Black couple moved in next door. Black families are told they are buying when they are actually paying rent in what they think is a suburban oasis. Within 3 years, the Montebello neighborhood changed from all white to all black. A great five part Investigative report from 1970 by WJZ-TV's Christopher Gaul.

No , when the 80s came the news was censored and today centers on sensation like crime and disaster. Nothing racist since it told what really happened. Real estate companies got rich on both races and played us . Dont think with emotion but with wit .

One thing that I've noticed while watching these videos and reading so many books on these topics (especially Louis Rosen's "The South Side" about Chicago), is actually how many white and black people genuinely tried to make integration work. But at some point they are overcome by things like social pressure, blockbusting, the fear of violence and crime (real or perceived), declining schools, etc. and then it completely failed.
I also notice that a lot of people who participated in white flight actually acknowledge it and feel bad about it, but not in like a personal guilt kind of way, but more of a "why did this have to happen/what went wrong" kind of way. A lot of them were genuinely open to integration and making things work. Sure, there were some nasty people, we've all seen the videos and photos, but I truly do believe that it was blockbusting and disastrous experiments like forced bussing that really doomed integration to failure.

At 14:45 Christopher Gaul states the homes were sold to black families for $12k. I checked the values for those homes...
    ●1801 east 31 st. was sold for $81,500 - feb 25,2019
    ●1811 east 31 st. Was sold for $75k - mar 29, 2019
●1710 east 31 st. Is valued at $93k
The homes and the block looks well kept. Sad to mention that looking at the history of the homes show that families stay as long as 5 yrs and move out.
Hey... im at work bored... i had nothing else to do lol

He is speaking truth . Baltimore is fraction of what it was in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Most of the people (family members &Friends) have transitioned. Seems as if the best of us have moved on to the next faze of reality.

I bought a house in 2005 in Towson, MD. Loch Raven Village townhomes off of Thetford Road. We had to pay to get the “ground rent” off the mortgage papers we were signing. Now, it was under $1,00 however, that was in 2005. This was taped in 1970.... pretty sure it was complete bull-ish.

Blockbusting goes way back to the 1910s in Baltimore City.
Baltimore Sun Newspaper (The Sun then) was complicit way back then, so was the City Council. The Afro-American Newspaper countered fearmongering during that time.
The roots of this ugly practice run deep, so the stories in the '70s were literally just history repeating itself. It had not ended at the time of this news report over 50 years ago, nor has it ended by now because, just like over 100 years ago, the powers-that-be do not really want it to end.
