  • Aerial video of Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area's new 6600-foot stretch of rock crawling madness topped with thousands of boulders ascending hundreds of feet up the mountain. Continue onto the exposed cross section at the Whaleback formation and take a good look at the massive geological marvel.

It's so awesome that this was built with a state grant. Reclaiming old mining areas and turning them into something that can actually be used to generate revenue in the present for these old mining towns is a good way to spend tax dollars.
The Whaleback is pretty impressive too. I've always been interested in geology and I would love to study it more but I just don't have the time. It takes forever.

the basic gist is how the whaleback strata is folded humped up, while laying in-line with the wall strata which is "U" shaped ie bent the complete opposite way. You would not get that from flood-deposit. You'd get that from the plate tectonics which crushed this area to at one time heave up mountains comparable to the Rockies, since weathered, to their current state.
Also the material which would have been above the top of the "U" was scraped off in the ice age.
There are only a few such drastic / clear examples of plate tectonics exposed anywhere. This is one of the best. There is another IIR in Virginia found when blasting for a highway but the whaleback is still a nicer example.
That is my understanding of it if any geo nerds would care to correct / elaborate

This new rock trail area is called the Mammoth trail area. A small group of us were invited to test wheel the area about two weeks ago. I asked if there were trails close to the Whale back and was told there were not. I believe that area is some what of a protected area due to its geological significance to the region. If interested to see more of the trail check out the video on my RUclips channel. It’s listed under DrWillys and the video is called AOAA’s New Mammoth Trail Area.
