That little added lever for more gears gives you three different ranges. That's called a Sherman transmission. That was an add-on most 8N tractors did not have that. Some people had that added so they could have lower gears for doing certain jobs with the tractor. There are a few videos that show you how to use that.
My grandparents bought an 8N in 1950. Sometime in the early 90s, my grandfather ran over himself with it and was dragged a few hundred feet. We're still not sure how he managed that. He was fine, by the way, just scratched and bruised up. In 2008 the tractor threw a rod and cracked the engine block. It was sold for scrap despite my protests. It was replaced with a Mahindra 3505i, which, to be fair, also turned out to be an excellent and reliable tractor.
Thanks for the video! We got a big Victorian home that had a pool, but after getting a quote of $45k to fix up the pool, we decided to remove it. I wound up purchasing a '49 8N for all of a grand to help remove the plastic panels on the sides. So far, I've used it for just about everything besides the pool! We live on only an acre, but this tractor has proven to he a great investment, especially when a big storm took down a bunch of trees!
You’ve got a good eye and a good attitude I would say! A couple of things I would add to your implement collection is the 7 foot deerborn cultivator I spelled that wrong but anyway and I have a 5 foot scoop that pulls forward it I great for landscaping or if you get a load of gravel and when you trip the scoop and pull it it acts like a box blade and I also have a V- Type snow blower that you can pull or push. And the last thing I would mention is getting a set of chains for the back tires for winter what a difference that makes, oh and if you’re into it you can also get a pulley that bolts on over your PTO shaft on the back as long as it’s the original size 1 1/8 I think is the original size and you can run something like a buzz saw or just to complete your collection! Sorry your wife doesn’t think your tractor is sexy but thems the brakes 😂😂😂Keep that old iron running 🇨🇦😀
Hey Keith, I've looked at a few of those attachments you mentioned. The truth is, I'd like to own every attachment ever made, but wouldn't we all. 😂 One piece at a time right.
My first purchased implement (and most frequently used) was/is a (6') box blade. I mainly use it to grade my (1/2 mile long) gravel driveway, but also use it to maintain my old logging trails. I also have a 6' bush hog, a 7' scraper blade, a backhoe, and a chain harrow. Wish list includes a landscape rake and a post hole auger. My tractor is a Kubota MX5400.

If you come across two additional implements, you may want to pick them up for the right price. There is a set a tine Harrows that match the plow. they do a good job and do not need as much power into the ground as the disk harrows. The other thing is a mowing machine for the back. Its a 6 foot cut bar and fits on the 3 pt hitch. It also came with the tractor, like the plow and harrow. For the plow we did not like the plow on the back. That is not good for pushing heavy show that we have here. So my father made an under carriage support which supports the plow blade mounted on the front of the tractor. It allows the tractor to push heavier snow from the front like a dozer and runs two cables to the back hydraulics to lift it and lower it. Great job with the video and women never understand how much this can make life easier.
Nice rig! I just picked up a '49 about 9 days ago, and I have learned a lot from your video. They seem to be a well made machine and I hope it will be a useful to us as yours has been to you and your family. Have a Merry Christmas!
This tractor has absolutely changed our lives for the better. They need lots of attention. Don’t be afraid to learn. Lots of knowledge online. I suggest a few Facebook groups focusing on the 8n. Parts availability is what drove me toward the purchase. Lots available. Thank you for watching and a Merry Christmas to your family as well! 🎄
If you really want to learn about those old Ford tractors look up the guy on Claremont classic garage he wrote the book on them even I learned things I didn't know and I've driven them since they were new !
Know old fords well, great machine. Real workhorses, best improvement you have made is the 12 volt conversion. Advise you eliminate the inline fuel filter & replace the rubber fuel line with the original steel one. Lots of heat comes off that exhaust manifold and the rubber line can overheat and leak on that hot manifold, not a good situation. You don’t need the inline filter as it already has a screen in the sediment bowl, the bowl itself and a screen in the carburetor fuel line elbow to filter your fuel. Currently I own four 8Ns, one Golden Jubilee with Wagner front loader and a 641 Workmaster. Like my old ford tractors, wife not too fond of my collection! LOL 😂
The fuel line is metal, except for the rubber around the filter. Yes it has to go…but I need a new line completely and just haven’t made that happen yet. I’ve never had a different tractor so I’m a bit bias. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@wiley1224 I’m not sure on the rims, but the tires are definitely old car tires. I suspect they are actually tube filled as the treads and side walls are shot. I’d like to upgrade in the future but have yet to decide what style I’d like to go with.
Shirley somebody would have told you how to use that Sherman auxiliary transmission on there. There are lots of videos on RUclips about the Sherman auxiliary transmissions. Some are step up, Some are step down, and some are both.
I have only seen one other picture of a transmission Handle in this spot. Every other one is left side or closer to driver on right side. Not one is directly below/behind air cleaner.
Hey. Awesome segment. I really wish they’d put stuff like this on TV instead of all the house renovation crap. Poor Sara when you start collecting Old Stationary Engines. I Dream of old tractors, machinery and engines almost every nite. 😁
Great video, my wife would have reacted the same way and leave😊, woman just don’t understand how men can get so into their tools and machines and would just as soon go watch some stupid tv show than to take part on an important conversation that helps make life way! I am looking at my first ever 8n tomorrow and at 76 I am excited! Thanks for the video !😊
You can add a small power steering pump to the front of the engine. Not for power steering, but to make it live power rear lift. That way you don't need the PTO running , and it'll lift while the clutch is in. It's aggravating mounting it , because the N series, is so tight up.front on the engine. There is plenty of information on where to run the hoses to. Use a small power steering pump from a small car. I think there are bolt up kits for doing this , but I just make them myself, for "ALL" my old N series , and Ferguson tractors.
That green red and yellow tine harrow would normally be fastened to your drawbar. You need a draw bar on your tractor. You should do all your main pulling with a drawbar, not with the 3 point.
My wife gets a little sick of my tractors ('50 1/2 sidemount 8n and a '54 NAA) too sometimes, but they are way cheaper than my sports cars I used to race, and after about 15 years, she seems to be coming around to the idea they facilitate a lot of things we do on our small farm. Currently, the 8n is in the shop getting a new engine after finding a cracked block. Taking the time to rebuild a number of things on it and adding a loader for some light work. We use them for all sorts of things, but started with snow removal. I have a lighter 6 ft. blade for that (which I just run backwards if gravel is not frozen) and a heavier Dearborne blade for dirt work. I have a Ford reversible scoop that we use for material handling and digging. Brush hog for property maintenance and a sickle mower for putting up loose hay for our goats. A boom pole (supper handy for unloading new impliments - lol) and a carryall. Highly recommend making one of those. I build mine with removable sides. I added cleats to the inside of those sides where I can set the tailgate boards and use it as a bench. Massively useful when I am building something or cutting firewood and need a space to work on my saw. Love the disk harrow and need to get one myself. I have an old wooden spike tooth harrow, but need something like that. Waiting on the right deal. Had a 2 bottom plow similar to yours that I bought for $100 but never used. Sold it for like $300, so no complaints.
That’s awesome. It amazing how versatile these tractors can be if you put a little thought into things. Sarah fought me a bit on getting it, but I’ll never forget the look on her face the first pass through with the plow. From there on she was sold. I think she likes the snow removal that pretty much happens without her help aswell 😂. For that back blade for snow removal, I made a pipe for the bottom. Really helps on the gravel. I’ll be working a few maintenance things today for the tractor. Expect a new video in the next week. I’ll be showing the back blade custom pipe on it too.
Haha, absolutely. But it’s hardly a briefing. 15 minutes of me rambling. I sure can talk a lot. I’m glad you enjoyed it. These tractors are so cool. Do you own one? Year? 8n? 9N?
@@LohreFarm I did enjoy it, great to see the attachments in action. I do not have a tractor yet, im currently selling weed by the ounce to save up enough $ to build a shop. Tractor is still at least a year or two away. What made you decide on gas vs diesel?

Thanks for the video. As someone who has a shitty channel I n ow how much time it takes. I am getting one of these for my new homestead and trying to grab some of the same gear that you have. Much appreciated.
absolutely. appreciate the message. The RUclips thing takes a massive amount of time and effort. It's nice when people watch the videos and enjoy them. Thank You. best of luck!
That's awesome. What do you mean when you say "nothing changed"? you don't notice a reduction in speed? I experience no change in direct power between high and low. only speed.
I've got a 47 8N and i love it. Got a blade, lift bar, bush-hog and the tractor for $3k and the engine had been resleeved 2 years ago. Wish i had the 2 range gearbox.
If that is hi lo shift it might actually be like my sherman transmission hi - lo and if you slip it in between see if you can pull out on shifter and it would go forward I believe to shift in standard gears ! As mine has 12 forward and 3 reverse mine is a 62 ford 841 (801 ) powermaster
You need a PTO overrun clutch and can get them with a 1-3/8" output vs the original 1-1/8" so you can run modern equipment. Those pre-live PTO tractors are downright dangerous without one.
That’s a dang good idea. I didn’t even know there was a work-around for a live PTO. I honestly haven’t used it for anything yet, but would consider a snow blower if that could be achieved. Thanks, I have to look into it.
Do you know on that fuel shut off? If you turn it to turns open, then you have a gallon reserve. If you ever run it out of gas, any open it all the way, and then you got your extra gas. That way, you can get back home or back home
oh boy. I can't even recall what my problem was. haha. I have her running like a champ these days. Thanks for the advice anyways. I can never have to much of that!
@@LohreFarm , you said the starter solenoid was engaging the starter, when you were not pressing on the starter button. I had the same thing happen on my 8N. I replaced the starter solenoid. End of problem. Cause is the spring inside the solenoid eventually gets weak after several years.
I ended up putting in a 100 amp battery kill switch. I have not had any issue since, and this thing is so dialed in right not I even hate to say it out of fear it starts acting up. Haha
Lots of people died trying to pull tree stumps out with those because they flip over backwards and crush people. That's where the name comes from. They are also very dangerous if you do bush hogging (or other high inertia implement) without an overrunning clutch.
Thanks for watching Dawn! The Shermans were really popular. The Engagement handles are on the left side of the tractor from the seat. This one is on the right. Very odd.
Hey Terry. Thanks for the comment. Yes, this is what I seem to keep hearing. I do find it really odd that this one has a right side handle. All the others seem to be on the left.
You could be right. I’ve had quite a few people look at it. Every other transmission handle is in a different spot however. This is the only other thing I have ever found that is the same. And this person never found the answer either. www.tractorforum.com/threads/ford-8n-mystery-hole.35665/
@@LohreFarm i just bought a sherman high/low transmission for my 1939 9N. i am converting it with a new clutch soon. i dont know if i can send pictures here. but i have it out of the tractor and in my truck if you want to see it.
I don’t understand why there’s so much interest in ford tractors. There’s been tons of great technical development since the first ford tractors. There’s no way I would give up my kubota 46 60 grand with loader and cab for a brand new ford 8N.
I think there are many factors at play here. Many of the technologies we have today came directly from the 8n 9n 2n tractors originally. There is also the money factor. A person could buy about 20 8n's for the cost of a new Kubota. I am usually a new is always better type person, but I do really dig the old models and history.
ooooo but if a husband said that about, lets say something that interest her it would be all hell to pay!!! You are not in tune with me etc etc!! Am I wrong boys!!!!! This is sarcasm please refrain from hate mail ladys!!
It's a little tricky to explain. My neighbor was the land owner. His driveway runs up the whole side of my property to his land to the north. So given the proximity of the Disk and harrow it makes way more sense he set it off to the side and the weeds grow up around it. I'm way more interested in having a great relationship with him, vs a couple hundred dollars in equipment.
Sorry you are stuck there with that women. I could see misery on her face when the video started, she just wanted a reason to be a witch. She reminds me of my miserable ex wife. Good luck my guy.

Cool. Any idea why this one would have a right hand control vs. all the others seem to be on the left?
I believe it’s a low and hi range leaver and you can use it in any gear
Correct. It really doesn’t change the amount of power though. Honestly the low gears are simply annoying. Haha
I also have a 1952 8n with a high low and nothing changed
That's awesome. What do you mean when you say "nothing changed"? you don't notice a reduction in speed? I experience no change in direct power between high and low. only speed.
FYI, the lever on the left down on the Hydraulic case will kick the PTO out so that is doesn't turn. You kinda need to know that.
Absolutely! Use it all the time. Turn it off for starting the tractor as well.
Nice try at making that tree transplanter. 😀
Thank you. Good concept. Needs a bit more work though.
I've got a 47 8N and i love it. Got a blade, lift bar, bush-hog and the tractor for $3k and the engine had been resleeved 2 years ago.
Wish i had the 2 range gearbox.
That’s so awesome Patrick! Thanks for sharing. These things are so fun. Sounds like you are taking care of that old girl.
A finishing mower would be nice if you find a deal.😉
I agree! Let me go talk to the wife. 😂
What front rims and tires are those from as they appear not to be the original style and width?
I was aware of it. I have never seen it actually work for whatever reason.
The next implement to add is a marriage counselor ❤lol
Sheeesh. Haha. We had a pretty fun time making the opening of that.
@ 7:28 that an old John Deere disc what?
Yep. She’s an old one.
I see your front wheels are bigger than the original front wheels. What rims and tires are you running?
I'm not really sure what the rims are, but the tires are just old car tires. They are shot. I have never replaced them since I bought it.
Is that the power overdrive possibly?
Could be. I’m planning on making a more in depth video soon. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of it then.
Saw a thunderhead289 video and he’s a 9n with a Sherman high low trans in it, maybe it’s similar?
Cool! I’ll have to check it out.
I believe you have a Sherman Hi/low transmission
Could be. It is definitely unique with the right side shift.
The spring in the solenoid gets weak over time. Replace that starter solenoid, if that is the one that gave you a problem.
Yes, now I recall. Yes, the dang thing wanted to auto start a few times. That totally makes sense.
I'd probably try to change the orientation of the solenoid. There is probably a way to do that. Although, it may require replacing the whole starter.
I ended up putting in a 100 amp battery kill switch. I have not had any issue since, and this thing is so dialed in right not I even hate to say it out of fear it starts acting up. Haha
My wife has the same reaction to my tractors lol
Haha. Priceless!
😅 my wife hates hearing about my 9n too. She calls it my mistress. 😂
Haha, I can see how that can happen.
Lots of people died trying to pull tree stumps out with those because they flip over backwards and crush people.
That's where the name comes from.
They are also very dangerous if you do bush hogging (or other high inertia implement) without an overrunning clutch.
Yes. They can be really dangerous. You need to be very diligent while operating.
Hi just subbed how much did you pay for the tractor
$1700 in March of 2017. Thanks for watching!!
Most likely a Sherman step up or step down. Only way to tell is in side the transmission red vs grey ones a step up one is a step down
Awesome. I really plan to open it up one of these days and get some video. Thanks for the info.
Sherman transmission. There's a video on it
"Oh geez" 🤣🤣🤣
Ford used a Sherman hi low transmission it was a addon😊
Thanks for watching Dawn! The Shermans were really popular. The Engagement handles are on the left side of the tractor from the seat. This one is on the right. Very odd.
The only high low transmission I know of is a Sherman transmission.
Hey Terry. Thanks for the comment. Yes, this is what I seem to keep hearing. I do find it really odd that this one has a right side handle. All the others seem to be on the left.
It’s a sherman hi low transmission
That really seems to be the consensus. I do find the right hand shirt a bit unique though.
That's a hupp transmission Sherman handles were on the other side
You could be right. I’ve had quite a few people look at it. Every other transmission handle is in a different spot however. This is the only other thing I have ever found that is the same. And this person never found the answer either. www.tractorforum.com/threads/ford-8n-mystery-hole.35665/
The high low is a aftermarket kit. Not original.
I think that is indeed correct. I wonder what brand/model it is.
@@LohreFarm i just bought a sherman high/low transmission for my 1939 9N. i am converting it with a new clutch soon. i dont know if i can send pictures here. but i have it out of the tractor and in my truck if you want to see it.
@anomyouslastname4904 That’s awesome. You could email them. I’d love to check it out. Email should be on the channel.
@paulbuckner375
Then I guess we're even, because I wouldn't trade my 8N for a brand new Kubota.
That is a sherman
That seems to be the consensus. But, it must be unique with the right hand shift.
Sherman transmission
ooooo but if a husband said that about, lets say something that interest her it would be all hell to pay!!! You are not in tune with me etc etc!! Am I wrong boys!!!!! This is sarcasm please refrain from hate mail ladys!!
Haha, we definitely had fun with the beginning of the video.
The hi low add on is most likely a Sherman.
I really need to take the access cover off and make a better video of it. Could be.
@@LohreFarm it is a sherm. I am working on getting a parts tractor just for that transmission
A Sherman transmission
That really seems to be the consensus. But the right side handle were it is seems pretty unique.
Something tells me the Mrs. hears way too much about the tractor!!!😂
Haha, sometimes.
Sherman transmission
Could be. It would have to be cable rather than handle. The handles seem to always be on the opposite side of the tractor.
Thats a Sherman transmission.
Don’t you think it seem odd the handle is right side? It must be unique or farmer designed.
I don't thank se was joking lol 😆
Haha. I’m pretty confident she loves the tractor. It saves a lot of back from shoveling snow.
You own the land but called the previous owner to make sure you could have the equipment? Your land your stuff.
@@LohreFarm that makes complete sense!
How sad. You NEED a tractor!
Sorry you are stuck there with that women. I could see misery on her face when the video started, she just wanted a reason to be a witch. She reminds me of my miserable ex wife. Good luck my guy.
Haha, You are too funny. It’s actually amazing how much she loves the tractor now. It has been a game changing tool for us in all aspects of life.
