I have been coming to Jacobs Aquarium videos for all kinds of advice on problems that occurred in my aquariums...He is very informative and I have much better success with fish health and plant health..Thank You Jacob for your videos and I really appreciate all of them! I have a lot of respect for you. Just saw this video, even though 8 years old now. I've been learning recently the key to healthy plant growth involves the importance of potassium and iron, particularly as I've numerous aquatic fern species. Iron also is essential for the healthy growth of healthy bacteria, I've learnt. Here you are bringing the message out of both nutrients almost a decade ago! Kudos! New Subbie as of now 😎

Thanks for this really useful video Jacob. Im fairly new to having live plants and have a low tech setup. Been dosing Flourish Excel daily and Flourish once a week. Have now just started dosing iron once a week as yet and will increase gradually as i think needed. Have been thinking of Potassium but may have to get online as my lfs "s dont seem to stock it. This video has come at the perfect time for me so i thank you for your timing and the info ! :)
+JacobsAquarium Exactly always be positive, Anyway I've learned so many topics in your channel, Thank you so much for your volunteer in being an Educative Explanatory Aquarist or AquaPlant Keeper :)
The dislikes are probably to do with the fact that it's a myth that iron makes plants more colourful. That it makes red plants red. Light it the most contributing factor of Red plants. Think of red plants as people with sunburn. They protect themselves from heavy light by turning redder. Which is why you ALWAYS see the reddest part of a plant at the top (nearest the light) If iron directly affected how red a plant will get then the entire plant would turn red in equal amounts, right? I don't how this myth started that iron makes plants turn red but it's quite ludicrous. Sure iron is helpful if a plant displays the effects of iron deficiency but it makes no difference at all to how red a plant is. This video is only helping to spread the misinformation concerning iron and is probably why there are dislikes from people who know better.
Just now discovering your channel, Lot's of great info and questions that are being answered. Been into the aquarium hobby since december and I'm really liking it. Great video.
Hey Jacob great videos you have inspired me to create my very first planted aquarium. I've had just plain fishtanks for a long time but this world is quite different I pulled out all my plastic plants yesterday and today I purchased 11 low tech plants. Such as Java ferns and similar plans that you have recommended. I'm just using a pebble substrate I have A LED light for plants. I just ordered your three recommended fertilizers. I have always done 30 to 40% water changes with my fishtanks my question is with all the plants and fertilizers now using should I continue the same amount of water changes per week?? Thanks and keep up the videos
Hey you mentioned 'Flourish Comp can cause lots of headache & Problems' but u didn't really want the issues is? can you please tell us bit more of this? Thanks
Thank you for the video. Nice calm and clear delivery - great for a beginner. I notice Seachem also sell a phosphorus and nitrogen fert - is there a reason you do not also use these - perhaps flourish and fish poop already contain enough of these? I also wondered how water changes fit in with liquid fert dosing? I see many different opinions on water changes, some advocate large water changes weekly (50%+) to prevent buildup of unused liquid ferts, some say you can get away with as little as 10-20% every two weeks but perhaps they are not adding liquid. Ideally I'd like to change as little water as infrequently as possible!
@JacobsAquarium thank you so much for the help i have only used seachem ever and have minimal growth. This is a huge eye opener for me thank you for sharing this information! Im so excited to feed my plants properly now!
great content, theres literally no video on youtube where people talk about the dosing schedule, so do you dose Day 1 iron, Day 2 - Nothing, Day 3 - Iron & Potassium, Day 4 - Nothing, Day 5 - Iron & Potassium, Day 6 - Nothing, Day 7 - Flourish?
Great help thanks. Can i dose these 2 together at the same time and why cant i just buy the seachem flourish? There is iron and potassium together in that.
How often do i dose seachem iron? I have 20 gallon with some green and red plants, gravel, seachem flourish tabs, about 12 freshwater fish, co2 and good lightening
Hi thank you for the video ..I have a low tech plants tank but the leaves become Brown and black and also plants stem cell that root on the gravel is turning black as well..I have some Algae grow on the tank which I think add too much fertilizer but not sure if there are algae grow on plants or lack of nutrients? And if my tank don't have co2 ,is it good to use Flourish excel? Now Im using Flourish and going to get Iron and Potassium for the leaves but not sure exactly what is the issue that my.plants have
+JacobsAquarium Gotta ask, this morning all my red cherry shrimp(3 males and 3 females| Breeders) die and I don't know any valuable reason that result the death of all my shrimp but I doubt that it is not with my tank without an aerator and plus there are aqua plants and I pour kinds of fertilizer for my aqua plants which is 4 actually and these are Nitrogen 2.5 mL, Phosphorus 2.5 mL, Potassium 5 mL and Iron 5 mL(All brand are Seachem) Could these possibly be the reason that killed all my red cherry shrimp breeder?...Once again in Advance Thank you for the answer and if anyone or anybody could answer this feel free, it would be much obliged.
nice video - thank for the info. Should I use Flourish Iron for my red plants ? I have just set up a new Aquascape and finished my first week of EI Dosing (Macro and Micro)
Well done young man. I to use liquid fertilizers in my planted tank. But I have limited it to once a week sometimes less. I use Seachem Excel every other day for a liquid carbon source and I use Thrive root tabs as my main source of fertilizer. They have both micro and macro nutrients with plenty of potassium and iron. They have a higher concentration of nutrients than Seachem Flourish tabs do. One tab under each plant and your good to go for up to two months. Dose with liquid ferts as an occasional boost.
I probably don't need to add iron. I live in an old mining town (they used to mine iron) and the municipal water supply is extremely hard. Potassium, is probably high too, but it couldn't hurt to test for it, if I can.
Plants prefer ammonia as a food source to nitrogen. It is essentially its own version of a nitrogen cycle. Adding nitrogen synthetically (flourish) probably isn’t the best idea. Iron and potassium all the way
Thanks for your opinion, however, adding nutrients to a planted tank is beneficial, even nitrogen. Ammonia should not exist in large amounts in your aquarium to begin with. So I wouldn't recommend that as a reliable source of fertilizer. Thanks for watching.
@@MrJacobCastro Thanks for your opinion. However, I was not promoting using ammonia as an additive. I was saying that Iron and Potassium are perfect additives for a freshwater planted tank. But there is no benefit to adding extra nitrogen into an aquarium with an established nitrogen cycle and fish. This is why you yourself are so careful with the dosing, because even a slight over-concentration of nitrogen will lead to an algae bloom. It is not beneficial for the plants when you have fish. Check biocenosis processes and anoxic filtration as references.
So if you're keeping lots of fish and they're producing nitrates through their waste, would we not need to add a fertilizer that has more nitrogen added to it and just dose the other micro nutrients?
Hi Jacob, could you explain to me the quantity of iron and potasium that I have to add in my 20 gallon tank and also the frequency.... thank you for your help
Wonderful video and glad I stumbled upon yours and look forward to watching more! Now my question.....I have been reading conflicting opinions on using potassium and shrimp. What are your thoughts on this? Will regular dosing of potassium hurt my invertebrates? Keep up the good work!
Hi, so, I have a banana plant that is growing leaves about 6 in across, theyre huge (my tank is only 20 gal long) I use an aqua glo light. As well as dose with flourish excel. I only dose when I notice my plants getting yellow or odd colored. Reason being is because I'm aware that there is carbon in the product, and i have 8 shrimp and like, 10 snails that I really don't wanna kill. (Pretty sure I'm supposed to dose every other day, I probably dose once every 1-2 weeks). Anyway, the plant's first few leaves were green, now, the last (and largest) leave is a deep red/purple/brownie/orangish color (the plant has a total of 8 leaves and just sprouted its runner 3 days ago, the runner is already beginning to open up close to the surface.), I think I'm using a light thats too powerful on the blue wavelength and thats why my banana plant is growing red, but I'm not sure. Also, I have some cryptocoryn that when I first put it in my tank it melted. In 4 days half the plant had melted away. But then it seemed like it adjusted to my parameters, and is now growing new leaves every other day, its also a deep dark purple color. I'm happy with it but was wondering if maybe my light has something to do with its dark color. I think i have a darker variation of the plant to begin with but... I was using a flora-glo light but i switched to aqua glo because I disliked how dim my aquarium looked. But I suppose the dimmness I was seeing was my plant's red wavelength. not sure though, was wondering if maybe you had an idea as to why my plants are red, I only use flourish excel.
Great information to beginner....please suggest when to dose iron and potassium? Whether in nights after lights are off or in the morning before switching on the lights.????
Seachem do make great products! I was dosing the EI method with seachem before and plants would grow like weeds. Now I switched to dry ferts to save a bit of money.
I'm so confused. Should I used Flourish and Trace, Flourish and Iron and Potassium, no Flourish? I have EcoComplete substrate and decent lighting. Still need nutrients. I've been using Flourish Excel, but it's not enough. Do you have a video that reviews Trace? I love all your videos! You have the best plants ever!
Is it bad to dose with potassium and iron even if you don't know if you have a deficiency or not ? I already have a lot of test kits and i would rather avoid buying a bunch more test kits.
The amount you dose depends on the size of your tank and how densely planted it is. Typically the directions on the bottle will show you how to dispense near the right amount. Thanks for watching.
I use seachem flourite dirt with a gravel mix, seachem flourish root tabs, API leaf zone, and seachem iron. My tank is a jungle of plants and my tank is super green. My plants keep my fishes water crystal clear my otocinclus goes around cleaning the plants.
I've been using Comprehensive, API Leaf Zone and sometimes Trace. But I think after I'm done with my last bottle of Leaf Zone, I'm just going to use Iron and Potassium. They seem to offer a lot more than Leaf Zone put together.
Best to get rid of Seachem Trace too. On some planted tank sites, it is essentially compared to using plain hard water near the pH of 8 in the aquarium
Will Flourish kill moss? I'm mostly new to a planted tank and I did of course grab the Flourish but someone at a shrimp store while I was buying moss told me not to use fertilizer cuz the moss would die
Thanks supper helpful, just got my first low tech planted tank (moss fern anubias and ludwiga) 10 gallon tried tabs but I feel the minerals are not being collected by plants. 1 question should I apply it as soon as I get it or wait ?
I have a 50g & a 29g and most of my plant's look brown. I was wondering when you put the iron and potassium in the tank do you do a water change?? If so how much of a water change??
Very good info, thank you for sharing. I need to dose Iron. One question I never seem to get an answer for, his how much iron. Is there a recommended dosage. I use Seachem products (because that is what my store carries). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The more I watch your vids the more I want a planted tank ! Always full of great info and this one is just the same I wouldnt dare put plants in my mbuna tank they would be shreded to bits in a few hours lol Keep up the great vids mate plus your really inspiring too!
Thank you so much :) By the way, Amazon Swords and Anubias are some plants you can keep in a cichlid tank. Their too big and firm for the fish to tear apart. Thanks for watching :)
Yes, even if my substrate was ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia, the best substrate it my opinion, I would still dose my liquid fertilizers. Plants are always going to need them and grow so much better with them. Thanks for watching :)
Thanks 4 the update, , and just like I was telling aaron , there's so many choices, ,, I dont know what will work best for me ,,,but u gave a lot of helpful information ,,,, thanks ,,, tank on
Thank you for your videos,I have just started with plants and your videos have been veeeery helpful... Can you please tell me is iron and potassium in any way harmful to fish? I assume it is not since you are using it, but just making sure. I*m currently just using co2 and all in one fertilizer combined with good lamps for my *low maintenance* plants and they are doing well.. I am considering upping the game with iron and potassium but still afraid for the fish...

Great information. I assume you still recommend dosing these products if using aquasoil?
Yes, even if my substrate was ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia, the best substrate it my opinion, I would still dose my liquid fertilizers. Plants are always going to need them and grow so much better with them. Thanks for watching :)
I over did it with flourish !!! Will flourish excel fix it ,changed the water! I have a lot of Algae
Hi. Great vid. Would you add liquid Flourish fert at the same time as having root tabs or is that too much fertiliser? Thanks for the reply.
Will the liquid fertilizers get down to the roots? Will they work well on all plants?
How quickly should I expect to see results after a dose. .
Thanks for all the great info :)

Good Video Jacob, I do like putting Clay Flourite in my substrate for Iron.
Do you need to shut off filter when feeding your plants and how long do you need to let the filter off, before turning filter back on.
