back when i was a kid and actually bought stuff from petco i got some amazon swords for my 10gal-fresh and there was just a tiny little leaf with a tiny little red hair coming out. it looked like a dying baby leaf blade to me ( very new to hobby at the time) and it turned out it was java fern. Well the Amazon sword barely survived a year... but that TINY (pinky nail sized) java fern... COMPLETELY took over my tank. Which i liked/allowed. I dont know how familiar anyone here is with cactus, but i would compare these to prickly pears - in regards to care/hardiness. They're the kind of cactus you can just literally rip off a leaf from and haphazardly throw it anywhere on the ground and in no time have a fully established plant.
They look awesome too! I wish I had started with a bigger tank :( Thinking of switching to a 20 gallon long in my room and maybe setting up an old 30 gallon in the living room. Not sure I'd want to maintain 2 tanks though xD
Me, too! I have a 36" bookshelf tank coming in any day now. I've got all sorts of plans and can't wait to get started. First I'm going to make my own undergravel filter and stash some bioballs in it as part of my biofilter system. Then weedblocker fabric on top and then decide between Amazonia and organic soil. You are the one who got me serious enough to start throwing money at this hobby :-)
The combination of your personality and depth of knowledge is why I subscribed but I have been watching a lot of star trek during the stay-at-home time and when you said you are a trekie I had to say right on!

I plan to add another tank and I want to do a low light planted 55 gallon in the early summer. I am enjoying your videos and they are really helpful. ✨
Echinodorus Hormanii, Looks like really really big Jungle Val, it also can grow big rhizomes that will make daughter plants. Needs a big tank mostly to itself, the other nice thing about them is they're rather tolerant of cool conditions being from Southern Uruguay and Northern Argentina so they would be good in a cool-water tank for Goldfish.
I just place my second order from H2O after being happy with my first order. My only wish is that they would have more in stock as many are OUT OF STOCK. I do understand that these plants need time to grow before they can be shipped out so patience is required here. Prices are very fair and I trust the quality of their plants.

I have a bunch of Malaysian Trumpet snails from a random fish purchase and a few Kuhli loaches. Would they keep it clean enough ? I have one Zebra loach left so I don't think I could add any shrimp.
Not sure what you mean by collecting garbage? What are you putting in your tank that it's collecting garbage?? Don't throw your trash in your fish tank!! ;)
@@TheWaterBox Lol. Fish food, sheddings from the hornwort, and poop etc xD If the snails, loaches, and Otocinclus catfish can't keep it somewhat clean I don't think I want it.

Hi @TheWaterBox! I know I am a year late but was wondering if you can answer my question. I am a new betta owner and I was told that my tank did not have enough plants for my betta Coconut to hide it. I have one Anubis nana sitting in the sand (the rimozone is NOT covered) and two betta friendly plastic plants. I did some research and I think I am going to go with the plants Lemon Bacopa Caroliniana and the Cryptocorynes Wendii both brown and green. Do you think my choices are a good idea or too much/little? I have a 5.5 Top Fin gallon tank and am planning on using the light that comes with the tank and no CO2 but I will use Seacheam root tabs. If my light is not enough, is the NICREW submersible light a good light? Thank You so much in advance?
That are good choices for plants. The nana is a great choice because you betta can perch on it. You could probably get rid of those plastic plants if you got a nana in there for him to sit on. Betta's don't normally need to hide unless you got the tank sitting in a high traffic area. But more plants are always good. The Bacopa and wendii green are good choice but I'm not sure the brown will do all that well with the light that came with the tank. The submersible light isn't really a plant light. I won't do anything for the plants. I would suggest something like the Finnex String Ray Clip On instead: amzn.to/2CCvsBp That should provide you more than enough light for those plants at the size of tank.
I really enjoyed the video but I would make one request----- where does each plant go? Do they go in the background, middle or foreground? Please keep making videos. thank you

I have a 10g tank that I'd like to make planted. Is it possible to do this just from the ambient light in a living room or do I need to have a dedicated aquarium light? I guess what I'm saying is I'm not sure what "low light" means in this context. Are these plants able to be grown just by sitting in a living room?
@@TheWaterBox Thank you for the reply! Do you have any suggestions for good enough lighting for a low-light aquarium? I'm wanting to have a betta fish in the tank.
It depends on the tank. Low tech tanks with soil I don't normally need to dose as the set up and the plants I use for that kind of set up don't need too much of it because the leeching from soil is enough for a couple of years. For a low tech with inert substrate, I tend to just use All-In-One ferts. Usually I mix my own. For more high tech/ specific set ups I use more complicated regiments and I stick to various dry ferts and dose on the demands of the specific tank.
@@TheWaterBox here's one for you mr water box:) i added duckweed to my tank. disaster. because of my strong water flow, there was duckweed all over like a Christmas tree;) what if i put duckweed in a filter media bag and attach the bag in the tank to a rock or let the bag float on the top? your thoughts? i want the benefits of nitrites and nitrate removal from it. ideas?

I enjoyed watching this video. I’ve read several books on Planted Tanks. “Sunken Gardens,” by Karen A. Randall was a treasure to read. “Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants,” was another fantastic book to read. There are a few more books I read, but then I might put you to sleep. My questions are about Eleocharis párvula (Dwarf Hairgrass). When it carpets, does it hold back gases that are dangerous to the fish in the tank? The other question is, Does the Hairgrass mats like the Monte Carlo Plant? Does the Hairgrass rises above the substrate as it mats, or if it mats at all? I’ve grown many plants before, but never Hairgrass. I would like to propagate this plant in my tank. Thank you for sharing!
Java fern, anubias, valliseneria is what I have. Congratulations on sponsorship from H2O. I would be interested to learn how to grow some of the other plants.
C.balansae has done fantastic for me. It can take low light..not so great water conditions..and then when you do add more light and better filter?..Its a beast in growth and puckered leaves. Unlike the Aponogetons that resemble it,this Crypt has no dormant period or bulb. So,its good to go all year. I love that plant, man.😢😜
Hi and I'm not sure where I can suitably ask you a question but would you be able touch on LED lights, actinic lights, UV wavelength, for fresh water, and also blue / UV / actinic light on eyes and are they really harmful when we are exposed to watching our aquarium in these lights? I read many conflicting reports in internet and I thought you might wanna give us a shot on this? I hope i posted in the right thread. Cheers :)
As for UV being harmful, all light in some way can be harmful because we're dealing basically with some form of radiation but with the UV lights we use in our aquarium, it's still very minimal. We're not reaching deep enough into the UV spectrum. If we did it wouldn't be good for plants either.
I have a green thumb in planta above water but aquatic plants I can't seem to make to thrive. The only plants that actually thrived in my aquarium are anubias and rotala although my rotala has been very sensitive to algae
At the moment, one of my favorites is the java fern, "trident" - I got it a few years ago, and it's just beautiful. Low tech tank, and it's pretty big. I like how distinctive and clean it looks.
Hi i love you video I have a turtle and he is very messy 😔 and i want plants in my tank but he keeps moving them… I have amazon sword and some anobus The question is can i glue the amazon sword to something ?!!
Amazon swords isn't meant to be glued to anything. But yeh, with a turt he's going to go most plants around and knocking them around. What I would do is plant the amazons in pots instead and put the pots in the tank that way. If you're creative with rocks and you build some structures to hide the pots. This will keep the plants in better place (unless you turt is the determined kind that want to move plants where he wants)
From a fellow Trek fan, great video. Enjoy the humour, nice editing and hurray for a sponsor. Clever H2O Plants! I've had luck with all your recommendations.
I love your videos! Thanks for taking the time to educate the rest of us. In this video, I would have loved to see examples of the different varieties you mention, so that I could see it while hearing you talk about them. Ah well...have to do my research the hard way! LOL! Thanks again!
@@timothy_b03 You're going to at least need two or three of them to get enough coverage with 50w floods on a 125 (maybe more depending on the spread of the lights). Any of the plants mentioned in this video can be done with this set up. As we don't have much of a reading on the substrate level of how well those lights you are using I can only guess that you are going to only get low light at the level (don't quote me on that. It's just a guess). The problem with flood lights is never one brand is made the same as another and we can't judge on wattage other than guesstimating the intensity based on how much power it uses. And even at that, the generic flood light manufactures always over states their wattage. So I start at 2 or 3 lights for coverage and hang about 1 foot from the surface and go from there to see how well it does.
Various places. Online stores from Dustin's Fish Tanks or H2O Plants or on ebay where I search of aquarium plant sellers in my local area (so I can get them fast)
Fantastic video, thanks. It would have been awesome if you could have put photos up of the plants living in a tank. Sorry for wingeing. Your vide was very informative.
My favorites are bucephalandra (red and green wavy) cryptos (wendtii and brown) Anubia nana petite, alternanthera reineckii mini (it’s one of the few red plants that can grow reddish leaves even under low light conditions), staurogyne repens, Amazon frogbit (it grows smaller roots under low light)
These others are not very easy to find in my area, but I wrote down the plant names and am doing more research, just in case I happen across them in an aquarium store.
Just subbed you. Great content. I wish I would’ve known about this live plant stuff before I added my fish. Now I need another tank. My wife would kill me. Lol.
You can do it if you already have fish. You don't need to "start" over. I'm not sure what videos you're watching. I'll have to do up a video about how to do that.
after a few years, my java fern just grow smaller and smaller, not sure why it happens and talk about echinodorus, mine one grew very well immersed, and they hat white flower with 3 petals too
Does anyone know of any live plants that would survive with the basic lighting you'd get with a 10 gallon setup package? I'd like live plants but dont know if my lighting would work with them
Stick to the basics. Most of the plants in this video can go at those light level. Java ferns and Anubias especially. Make sure to get fully grow plants as at such low light levels, it'll take forever to grow them out. Make to supply some all in one ferts as well.
I have a 36 bow with the light that it comes with and the plants in it won't grow exept for the Anubis looking plant I got for 3 bucks. But it's light green and transparent. I also have waster westeria and onion plants that won't grow. I have the light that it came with
It's probably your lighting. Those lights that comes with tanks aren't all that great for plants unless it was originally built for planted tanks. Are you also dosing your tank?
The purple waffle plant died in one of my tanks. It was the batch that hadn't sprouted Roots I guess.. Because when I pulled the stems out they didn't have roots I checked all the other waffle plans they seem fine they have roots. Guess I'm just going to have to stick to anubias that's the only thing that doesn't die
I might have posted before, but I'm sort of old,so give me a break...But! Giant Hygro is usually a good grower under something as simple as double 40 watt shop lights. Java moss is unkillable..unless algae gets on it. So,low light really best unless you have a very light fish load and bright tank where it can do well too. Those two make for a top ten as I agree on all your other choices.
This was awesome! I’ve been struggling with a ten gallon tank. I just got the Stingray 20” and I hope to be able to salvage my struggle Java ferns in there. I have no co2 of course but I will be buying some of these recommendations, probably from your sponsor. :)
The Water Box they were fine with fluorescent plant light that I was using but then I changed to an LED that didn’t work. It came recommended but it was not plant friendly. As a result the ferns got a bit sickly. I also had an awful out break of algae from the other light.
Anubias and Crypts. The only plants I haven't killed in low lighting. And to give perspective on my take of low light, think Walmart 10 gallon LED kit lighting. They are both thriving and have more than doubled in size. and space. So much so that they support a school of 50 guppies in a 10 gallon tank...... Just saying.
Haha I like doing the vid across vid running jokes. I message h2o plants asking if the wanted to sponsor the next video so I can finish the punch line. Lol

@@TheWaterBox thanks for your replies. i have oscars and gts in my tank. so other plants never last. eaten or destroyed:). if i do put the duckweed in a media bag. let it float? or does it not matter if duckweed is completely submerged? by tying it to a rock or artificial plant? your help is appreciated
Thanks for making this video! I like how you picked lights most beginners or inexpensive lights that we all use or used! You made this video real relatable!
many fish get too much light in fishtanks, compaired with how much light they get in their natural biotope. So i breed fish in unlighted fishtanks, mostly fish who like things a bit darker. My only option is anubias for now. It grows in really dark fishtanks with black painted background and sites, and never any artificial lightning on it, full time 24/7. Is there any other option in this very low light conditions ?

Downside? Frequent trimming.
Yeh, that think needs trimming all the time. It does get annoying after a while. :) Thanks for commenting!
I've never heard of them holding in gases unless you're talking anaerobic pockets but that could happen regardless what you're growing.
The Water Box Thanks!
Welcome
Java fern, anubias, valliseneria is what I have. Congratulations on sponsorship from H2O. I would be interested to learn how to grow some of the other plants.
I'll do more vid on more plants in the future for sure! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
one of my new favorite low light plant are cryptocoryne parva, perfect for smaller tanks!
Awe man, how did I miss that? Thanks for sharing that one Zingo!
The only negative thing about crypt parva is that it grows at a glacial pace.
I love that plant, man.😢😜
Thanks for sharing
Hi and I'm not sure where I can suitably ask you a question but would you be able touch on LED lights, actinic lights, UV wavelength, for fresh water, and also blue / UV / actinic light on eyes and are they really harmful when we are exposed to watching our aquarium in these lights? I read many conflicting reports in internet and I thought you might wanna give us a shot on this?
I hope i posted in the right thread. Cheers :)
Will this work? :) Planted Tank Lighting Series: ruclips.net/p/PLl7jTu1aWwVbqqpVXi_tmwGThvsd96R5W
It might be the lighting. Are you dosing? As I don't know your set up, I can't help much.
So far I've only been able to keep anubias. Ive been looking to put more green in my 20 gallon
Good luck! :)
You had my subscription at "Star Trek fan" . Great fun video, thanks😆
Trekkie/Trekker for life! ;)
At the moment, one of my favorites is the java fern, "trident" - I got it a few years ago, and it's just beautiful. Low tech tank, and it's pretty big. I like how distinctive and clean it looks.
It is a pretty plant for sure! Thanks for watching
Great video, tnx!
Glad it helped!
Are these ok with hard water
Define "hard water".
@@TheWaterBox Arizona hard
Great video production
Thanks
Would these plants also do well in a high light tank?
Yes, they should.
Hi i love you video
I have a turtle and he is very messy 😔 and i want plants in my tank but he keeps moving them…
I have amazon sword and some anobus
The question is can i glue the amazon sword to something ?!!
@@TheWaterBox thank you sooo much
I was planning to do the pots, I don’t know where to find the small pots but i will keep looking thanks
Wow I wish they had this in Taiwan I would love to have it for a carpeting plant. Wow no light and CO2 and it continues to grow that's awesome
Cool!
From a fellow Trek fan, great video. Enjoy the humour, nice editing and hurray for a sponsor. Clever H2O Plants! I've had luck with all your recommendations.
Awe! Thanks Cranium! He just sponsored the video. :) And good to hear from another treker!
I love your videos! Thanks for taking the time to educate the rest of us. In this video, I would have loved to see examples of the different varieties you mention, so that I could see it while hearing you talk about them. Ah well...have to do my research the hard way! LOL! Thanks again!
Haha sorry about that.
To keep the balance what plants would be recommended for 50 watt led floodlights with a nutrient rich substrate with no co2
How big of a tank?
The Water Box 125 gallon ;)
The Water Box Ok thanks. Yeah 3 was the plan.
@@timothy_b03 Right on!
Where u buy the plants
Various places. Online stores from Dustin's Fish Tanks or H2O Plants or on ebay where I search of aquarium plant sellers in my local area (so I can get them fast)
Fantastic video, thanks. It would have been awesome if you could have put photos up of the plants living in a tank. Sorry for wingeing. Your vide was very informative.
I would but sometimes I don't have all those plants recorded in a tank.
Nice! thanks for sharing!
I have always had great luck with crypts, anubias and not much else. But I haven't tried any of these other low-light ones yet.
Great! Maybe you'll give the others a try one day. :)
These others are not very easy to find in my area, but I wrote down the plant names and am doing more research, just in case I happen across them in an aquarium store.
great!
Just subbed you. Great content. I wish I would’ve known about this live plant stuff before I added my fish. Now I need another tank. My wife would kill me. Lol.
Why can't you plant the tank now with fish in it?
The Water Box from all of the videos I’ve seen, it’s recommended to do it prior to adding fish. So the tank can adapt to the live plants and all.
You can do it if you already have fish. You don't need to "start" over. I'm not sure what videos you're watching. I'll have to do up a video about how to do that.
The Water Box copy that. I will check that out. I appreciate your time and answering my newb questions. Lol.
No prob. Always glad to help. I'll make a vid about it.
Can I grow a polystichum fern in my aquarium
great job on video n great to have a sponsor
Haha he just sponsored that one video so I can say I had a sponsor for that video. lol Silly on going joke if you wanted the videos before this one.
after a few years, my java fern just grow smaller and smaller, not sure why it happens
and talk about echinodorus, mine one grew very well immersed, and they hat white flower with 3 petals too
It could just be the parameters as to way the java ferns got small. Cool on the echinodorus
Is it ok to put them in the beach sand ?
Sure. Make sure to use root tabs for heavy root feed plants.
No worries I'm at trecki 2 also I love animals. I'm writing from Taiwan but I'm an American I love your video keep up the good work
Thanks!
@@TheWaterBox thank u
No prob.
@@TheWaterBox I figured out that it was not an Anubis and was a form of amozon sords and the sould was too low
The purple waffle plant died in one of my tanks. It was the batch that hadn't sprouted Roots I guess..
Because when I pulled the stems out they didn't have roots
I checked all the other waffle plans they seem fine they have roots. Guess I'm just going to have to stick to anubias that's the only thing that doesn't die
Yeh, Like I said, it's not a full aquatic plant. I'll look great in a terrarium though
Thanks for the suggestions Stan!
excellent list!!!
Thank you sir! Excellent comment! :)
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
@@TheWaterBox I did it a lot! I'm sending you support from Brazil🇧🇷.
@@klebberbrazilian.theprofessor thanks!
This was awesome! I’ve been struggling with a ten gallon tank. I just got the Stingray 20” and I hope to be able to salvage my struggle Java ferns in there. I have no co2 of course but I will be buying some of these recommendations, probably from your sponsor. :)
What's wrong with your ferns?
The Water Box they were fine with fluorescent plant light that I was using but then I changed to an LED that didn’t work. It came recommended but it was not plant friendly. As a result the ferns got a bit sickly. I also had an awful out break of algae from the other light.
Great picks. I would have to agree with them all.
Thanks HC!
You got my subscribe for the Star Trek reference!
To boldly go my man!
Just saying.
awesome!
Got to love Voyager.
One of my faves
Do these need co2?
No, but it'll do much better with Co2.
Congratz on the sponsor! You are hilarious and I would laugh every time you brought up the "no sponsor"
Haha I like doing the vid across vid running jokes. I message h2o plants asking if the wanted to sponsor the next video so I can finish the punch line. Lol
Humor definitely is a great rapport builder. You have lots of great information and seem to be pretty fluent with video production as well. I am looking forward to your channel growing more! I appreciate you responding to your comments and being interactive with your viewers, it shows how much time you put into your projects. Wish you the best of luck, and will see you in the next video
Thanks Oh Jo! Yeh, video production is my other favorite "hobby" :) So it works out both ways. Thanks again for watching and following along! I definitely like to comment. It's easy right now with the channel being small but like my other channels, when it gets bigger, it's going to be much harder :/
that's what I'm sayin', you gotta enjoy it while it lasts
For sure!
Nicely produced vids, sir. New channel to binge. lmao

here's one for you mr water box:) i added duckweed to my tank. disaster. because of my strong water flow, there was duckweed all over like a Christmas tree;) what if i put duckweed in a filter media bag and attach the bag in the tank to a rock or let the bag float on the top? your thoughts? i want the benefits of nitrites and nitrate removal from it. ideas?
I'd just get rid of it. Hate that stuff. My other plants are more than enough of a filter. But is you want, you can do that and put it in a bag. Do you not have other plants in your tank?
@@TheWaterBox thanks for your replies. i have oscars and gts in my tank. so other plants never last. eaten or destroyed:).
if i do put the duckweed in a media bag. let it float? or does it not matter if duckweed is completely submerged? by tying it to a rock or artificial plant? your help is appreciated
You know. I'm not sure about that. I never tried that so I dunno how well I'll grow fully submerged
Thanks for making this video! I like how you picked lights most beginners or inexpensive lights that we all use or used! You made this video real relatable!
Thanks!
many fish get too much light in fishtanks, compaired with how much light they get in their natural biotope. So i breed fish in unlighted fishtanks, mostly fish who like things a bit darker. My only option is anubias for now. It grows in really dark fishtanks with black painted background and sites, and never any artificial lightning on it, full time 24/7. Is there any other option in this very low light conditions ?
Yup!
@@TheWaterBox yup.... like Yup, there are other options, in very dark tanks... ? I'm curious.
Great share for the new comers 👍
