    Back in 1985 I came to faith in Jesus and gave up rock music for several months. My unsaved brother tossed me a Time magazine article about Stryper and that was my gateway to Christian metal. Please pray for my brother as he is still unsaved.

    This EP is my favourite Stryper album, possibly because I listened to it first. I was 17, in Venezuela, and this EP was played in FM radio in its entirety as soon as it came out. I used to tape this show, and it blew me away!! I immediately bought the EP. I love Stryper but I think they have never matched that raw, genuine sound since then

      They took donations for the EP. I gave Mike $20. The practice room in their parents garage in La Mirada was great. Bible study before they played. They played the La Mirada Civic down the street from their parents Magic Mountain, the Concert Factory, .... I was there when they were loading out to fly to their show in Japan. The big lighted letters of the band name. Two friends took drums and guitar lessons from Rob and Mike. Great memories

    I can’t even imagine how many souls they’ve helped save and bring to the lord. They were relentlessly attacked by those who sat in their church, already among likeminded believers, etc and just waited for people to come to them…Stryper took the kings message to those who never would ever think about stepping foot into a house of worship. Dirty bars, dangerous and rowdy Venues in seedy neighborhoods, etc… Stryper took the message to those who needed to hear it most. Without a doubt doing the lords work and I also zero doubts they’ll be rewarded in heaven.

    German here: Stryper did amazing music in the 80´s and looked unique. "Against The Law" cost them many fans, me too. I preferred Bloodgood (RIP Michael Bloodgood!) later on. Only recently I found out Stryper had reunited in 2005. I now listen thru their reunion albums. In my opinion it´s too much on the safe side. Power metal with a guitar solo after two minutes and that last minute of any song can be skipped as it doesn´t contribute anything new to the song.
    To put "Battle Hymn For The Republic" at one record´s end and at the end of the concerts was a bold move!

    There's so many "one hit wonders" in the genre, who only put out one album. Or cassette. It would be a lot of fun to see you do a deep dive into those one off bands who never made it big like Stryper or some others.

    Great video! I read in Michael's book Honestly or Loud N Clear (if my memory is correct) that Enigma had Stryper do a show case where they would do a set before they were signed. They sang the versions of the songs with the lyrics changed to Christian themes. After the set the label signed them. The Hein brothers afterwards read the lyrics and realized then or after asking the band if they were a Christian band. The label at first didn't know what to do. I think they had a, "what did we get ourselves into moment". It seems it was a learning process for both the bad and the label for the early years. When one of the Hein brothers went over to Hollywood Records around 1990/91 after Enigma went under, Stryper singed with the label, reissued the first 5 albums and Can't Stop the Rock was intended to be an all new album. Hein didn't want to finance a new album so the band only recorded 2 songs to release it as a compilation that we all know about. I got into or heard about Stryper before Soldiers was released. I eventually had the first 2 albums taped off. I bought the Soldiers cassette in April/May of 1986 the same time of the Chernobyl disaster and my Stryper collection grew from there and became a huge fan. To me Christian Metal started with the first Rez release and grew from there. Stryper was the first band to brought it to the mainstream. Prior to 1984-1986 period, there were less than around 10-15 bands that were Hard Rock/Metal that had albums released: Barnabas, Daniel Band, Jerusalem, Leviticus, Rez and a few others. Some artists had elements of Hard Rock to some degree in the 70s and the early 80s like Petra, Jerusalem and Darrell Mansfield. Also, bands like Jerusalem, Petra and Rez sounded in many cases a lot heavier live than they did on record. As we all know it exploded in the mid 80s as many more bands released albums and went from having a regional following to a national and international following like Saint, Barren Cross and Bloodgood.

    Stryper was making it big during the 1980s, but somebody in high places must have got to them and declared, “Look, guys, all this Jesus stuff is all well and good, but you guys have to go mainstream and cater to a wide audience and you got to cut out the Bible garbage, okay?” I think that might explain why they issued a secular album in the early 1990s, and saw their musical career go thud. But once the band returned to the heart of Jesus worship, their career took off again. I’m glad Stryper is still making Godly Music after all these years. Little bit of trivia: Michael Sweet had enough hard rock chops to sing with the rock band Boston for a time, before returning to Stryper.

    • @PastorBradRocks
      @PastorBradRocks  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, if you dive in and watch some interviews, you'll hear the band share about their album against the law, the early 90s album you referred to. When they came on the scene in the 80s the church had no clue how to respond to them. So many people said oh they have big hair and Spandex and dress like the world and... Just really gave them a hard time. By the end of the in God we trust tour, they were pretty wounded and thus created the against the law album, the title of which in and of itself is kind of a pushback against what they perceive to be judgmentalism. The awesome news as you so wonderfully pointed out, once they got some space, they got there walk with the Lord solid and pressed forward! All of us have chapters in our life that if they were made public for the world to critique, it would be hard. I'm thankful for stryper and all they've meant to me over these many many years!

    You had the EP front album covers backwards. They actually had three different front covers. They had the original with each band members initials on one of the four missiles, they had the plain boring one, and they had a cropped original with the missiles but the band members initials were cut out. Some group complained about the missiles on the front cover of the original cover and that's why it was changed to the boring one. Of course not going to touch that. I didn't know Jimmy personally, so I really can't speak to where he was in terms of his walk with the Lord at the end ... my prayer is .... that all was well.

      Yeah, I don't know if you listened to Michael's answer, but he was pretty transparent on that. He didn't say they were the first metal Christian band, he just said it's within the realm of possibility that they were the first to break like they did on a national level, in the specific genre of '80s metal. And they certainly paved the way for many bands who came after them. But hey man, everybody's entitled to their opinion and at the end of the day that's all it really is anyway, just an opinion. Blessings man, thanks for sharing yours!

      If I recall, they were the first band ever to have two top ten songs at the same time on MTV. Can anyone else verify that?

      No one said there were the first Christian band... they were among the early Christian bands... and they were the first to do it the way they did it... and they deifinitely opened doors for soooooo many who followed them.
