The fact that you had timing problems makes me wonder if your distributor gear got worn and pieces off of went thru the bearings causing your pressure problem…

I once knew a guy who built a nice 410. Same sort of problem. Lost oil pressure after a few months. Found out the chamfer on the crank journals didnt match the chamfer on the bearings. Didnt notice at assembly. Motor turned over easily at the right specs. But after 3 months it overheated and damaged the bearing and lost oil pressure, Never knocked once. Lost of power. Went 10.7s in the 1/4 once then struggled to get under the 11.50s then11.70s, then 12s. New igniton new carbs. Nothin. Then on the way home on the highway lost oil pressure. Got it fixed and went racing again. Twisted the input shaft off the "build 727" and oiled the whole track. The car was valiant pacer ( australia) Looks the same as your car just blue. Nice sounding engine though.

Sorry to see what you’ve discovered. It happens to all of us time to time. And it always gives us an opportunity to come back better. My last bad experience was two fold. Detonation took the ring land off one of my pistons (no damage to the head fortunately) and the oil pickup cracked and dropped oil pressure to drop off to zero. Resulting in spun bearings as well as cap walk which “widened” the register in the cap saddle.
I did rebuild it. New crank, pistons with less compression and a hydraulic roller cam setup.
    You’ll be back. No doubt!
I’m looking forward to seeing your success story in the future.

Brother seeing that oil filter hurt. I have been there and I honestly feel for you. My 340 Duster I built experienced a failure similar to what you have going on. But on the bright side, that was my motivation to go all out.
R&R speed shop did a full balance and blue print,.30 over, 11 to 1 compression, H-beam rods, W2 heads ( big pain because of the custom valve train, intake, headers, etc) only because I got a deal on a complete upper end package. Anyway, it gives you the chance to do all those , I wish I would haves.

340's had a front cam bearing loss of pressure under acceleration ..the fix was a hard line plumbed from the oil galley in the rear up to the top of that bearing through the lifter valley ..also the oil to the cam chain is gravity fed out 2 casting holes at the front of the block in the valley ..so no oil under hard acceleration ..they get enlarged to solve

@@mikesr3407 how many miles is it from home to track and back? But really tho, if you’ve got good oil pressure and your not running hot, then you shouldn’t be causing enough wear to cut life short like this. Just my experience tho from driving street/strip cars. I had a 66 barracuda with a built 340 back in the late 80’s and I was daily driving it and running it on the weekends and it held up fine for both

It's just a guess... It may have started with the thrust bearing and went down hill from there... When you take it apart.. check the flexplate for cracks... When you are footbraking at stall speed the line pressure will force the converter forward... Man I hate it for ya... It sux forsure!

Man that sucks hopefully the damage is not really bad but running low on oil pressure is not good on anything. something wore out and caused it but that engine should've lasted longer than that you hardly made many passes on it.

I know ya don't feel lucky right now but your have horseshoes somewhere....That engine lost 8 pounds oil pressure on the dyno. Something in the top, cam bearings or lifters are not getting enough oil, bleeding off some how. Don't leave us hanging I need to know what happened. And besides those Heads need more cubes anyway. 👍
