    It ends the way it started, with Kendall set-up & eager to inherit the crown only for the rug to be pulled out from under him in the 4th quarter. Poetic, but tragic. Kendall is truly one of the greatest tragic characters I’ve ever seen.

    • @rticante
      @rticante Год назад +13

      *Tragicomic, at times, as he's evidently not well equipped to be the CEO (it's been shown time and time again) and was just trying to appear as a poor imitation of his dad on some misguided quest for recognition from Logan even after his death. They didn't really give him the high degree of dignity that a fully tragic character has, at most they make us pity him. He's a very flawed man who's often unlikable and ridiculous but also hurt, just like his siblings. He simply tried (and failed) to get that CEO position more times than the other two.

    Two things that stand out to me
    1. Ken’s buy off of Colin bites him in the ass in the most poetic way. Followed by his past at his lowest point.
    2. Everyone always remembers “You’re not a killer. You have to be a killer.” But nobody remembers what he said right after “but nowadays maybe you don’t, I don’t know.” I think Tom becoming CEO doesn’t prove he’s a “killer” like Logan would say, it proves Logan’s whole worldview is at best, outdated. You can be a lapdog all the way to the top, which is exactly what Tom did. He didn’t win the “big dick competition” with Mattson. He pretty much said yeah man I’ll even let you fuck my wife if you want just let me be CEO.

He thought Tom was a nothing, and so did shiv, and so did we as an audience at that point. But Tom’s brand of spineless-ness works bc the most powerful men are always looking for a lapdog.

    I agree that if the show ended with all three siblings backing each other and Kendall being the crowned the "king" it would have felt off/fake/inauthentic. We always want our favorite shows to end with everything tied up in a nice bow, but that's not always what is best for the show. This felt more real and more true to the characters we've seen for the past four years. Succession remained a tragedy right till the end, though I do think Roman might finally find some happiness.

    Love how all the siblings get their unhappy yet appropriate endings. Roman's back to being a rich nobody, Kendall will never live up to his dad's reputation, Shiv is doomed to be in a loveless marriage with a corporate man (just like her mother). Absolutely incredible finale that fills you full of hope only to yank it away in true Succession fashion.

    • @samfinbury3805
      @samfinbury3805 Год назад +12

      I don’t know if Roman’s ending is unhappy. He escaped a cycle of abuse that would have had him be Kendall’s whipping dog just as we was Logan’s before. He also had an epiphany about how meaningless their desires were and how small they themselves were. In the end he’s rich and free from the onus success and struggle, drinking at a bar looking relieved. I think out of the three he’s the only one that has a contented future ahead of him, even if it is being a nobody. I think he’s okay with that now.

    • @SweetJeopardy
      @SweetJeopardy Год назад +3

      @@samfinbury3805 it's not an epiphany cause he *always* knew he -as well as his family - wasn't sh*t, he just wasted his time. He isn't free cause he has absolutely no idea how to function without someone cracking the whip, which is why he gravitates towards abusive environments and people. He always had the option of being disgustingly rich yet uninvolved in the business, like Connor, yet he feels the compulsion to place himself in these situations. Even after Logan's death he chose to stick with Kendall.
      The cycle of abuse doesn't stop when an abusive situation ends, but when the emotional damage is healed. What's the advantage of knowing you're troubled if you're clueless as to how to help yourself? It's absolutely an unhappy ending, but he has a chance...they all do, honestly.

      Lest y'all forget, Logan put Shiv in charge even after she went to work for his political enemy and he would have named her instead of Rhea had Shiv not wheedled her way out of that one.
      You know who Logan never once considered for CEO after S1E1? Ever? Ken. You know who he considered multiple times? Shiv.
      Shiv's issue wasn't betrayal or backstabbing. It was lack of experience and the fact that she... was a she.

I watched this a couple more times after it ended and the three kids all seemed exhausted by it all and coming to terms with the fact that it's just not meant for them. I think they need to do what Caroline said and move on also take a page from Connor's book and accept their dad for who he was and learn to enjoy the things he DID manage to give them. Like a financially comfortable life and maybe be able to bank off of being his kid in other industries and business ventures. I'm not saying excuse Logan for everything but he's dead now, they were never on the inside, and there won't be any closure. I think Connor got that right early on and he has an element of freedom.

Her brother whose entire ambition is just to be CEO, or Tom, who despite everything is seemingly pretty good at his job when it comes to the running of things, plus she must have realised that despite everything she still had Matsson's ear because without knowing it she sold him Tom, as what he was looking for, an acceptable front man for the operation. Jimmy, I love your reviews of the show - well done sir. 2) There was foreshadowing that Shiv would betray her brother because she spit in the drink made for a king. It was there that she was not completely on board. 3)] Tom putting the sticker on Greg- was so funny and so right on brand. 4) When Kendall went back in and they already voted that was so tragic something about him not being present was so sad. 5) Tom as CEO but the fake CEO fits him right - he will be next to power without any power that’s Tom in a nutshell. And Kendall I felt really sad for him like damn but he can do he has the business sense he can build something great absolutely! As for Roman - he was wrong they aren’t nothing they matter but that got a lot of. Bullshift ways. And it was nice for brief moment to see them laughing. And i did tear up watching them watch Logan that was brilliant acting and directing because nothing was sentimental but the actors help us feel that! As flor judging the finale it’s too soon to say but I can only imagine the million and one think pieces about Shiv.

    Shiv bringing up Kendell being responsible for the caterers/waiters death, that's not why she voted yes, was almost if Logan himself reached beyond the grave to give Kendall one last "I beat you". It was the lowest point in his life and he confided in her, and she used it to tear him down. He was responsible for his death, but it wasn't murder. The line "because I'm the oldest son" was a throw back to Connor saying the same thing to Shiv, Roman, and Kendall as a last pathetic attempt to be relevant in that circle of narcissists outside of the farce of his Presidential run. That was dark.

      @@kelly9876 I think it was Shiv who put the sticker on Tom's forehead tho. She stuck with Tom cause their relationship makes her feel powerful and she can't stand flunking the exam. She'd rather take the perception of power through a toxic relationship dynamic in which she constantly demeans her partner -who has repeatedly betrayed her - to assert herself, rather than establishing it on her own right. Same reason why Tom picks Greg.
      I don't believe the power relationship between Shiv and Tom has changed, nor that they'd like it to change. It's not like either of then have to be with each other atp. Their kid's gonna be so f*cked up!

    You might despise her methods, but Shiv is her father's daughter. She did as he wanted ---- she SOLD the company. As Logan told his kids, they should create their own pile. He has given them a big head start. Shiv did not realize that no one was going to make her a CEO (of anything) or Roman either( too many demons). Kendall would have been out as CEO had anyone got a whiff the auto accident (why do you think that he rehired Colin?). Greg as CEO --- if you have brain damage. Why would you give up $250 mil to sit around your cousins? Tom, who was already sitting in the position as head of ATN was the logical choice. He is sitting on the cash cow. Matsson wanted someone to implement his policies, not a partner as Shiv wanted to be, in addition Matsson wants to bed her down (she would have to view it as some type of transaction). Shiv would not sleep with Matsson to keep Tom in a job. Shiv looks at the things Tom does a betrayal, but it is not the case.
    He told Kendall at their diner meeting that he was a loser and that Logan always wins. You knew Tom was up to something when he left the diner. Everyone found out at the end of season 3. If he told Kendall that he was a loser, he tried to keep Shiv out of the mess although she was the one with mouth and poor logic. By taking, the job Tom did his wife a favor. If Matsson was sending blood to Ebba, then who knows what may have been in store for Shiv other than Matsson's rod.

    I have seen some hate against Shiv for turning against Kendall. Yes, she was spiteful and all that. Her stated reasons were probably not the actual reasons for her doing so. But...were her stated reasons incorrect? She says that Kendall would not be good at it. Over and over. Yet, she does not say that she would be better, that Roman, Lukas, Tom, or anyone else would be better, just that he would be bad. Also, he killed someone. Are those things incorrect? Are those things not reason enough to vote against him? And she was not even involved in the "eldest boy" vs "bloodline" argument; that was Kendall and Roman. It was horribly cruel thing for Roman to say, but it also displays how volatile Kendall can be.
    On the other hand, I have seen people say that Kendall should have pulled an alpha move and assert that no one can prove that he did it instead of simply retracting his admission, which...yeah, that is not going to get Shiv or Roman to turn around either.

    Oh, wow. 10/10 for the last episode. The ending summed up pretty much perfect the whole dynamic of the show and the storyline. And all the betrayals...Pretty hard to digest the last one, what Shiv did. Season 4 like the show overall was almost flawless. I will miss it, I will miss this brilliant TV show. Brilliant.
    Otherwise, season 2 was my favourite, although seasons 3 and 4 were better, but way, way harder to watch. I thought after seeing season 3 that that was the saddest, but the truth is, after this finale, season 4 was much more sad, even tragic. Kendall remains my favourite character alongside Greg, I think. I thought Roman's character was much more nuanced this season, and I really liked it. Also Tom is another great character, although he is so hateful, but otherwise hilarious. All in all, in my opinion, Jeremy and Matthew both stand out amongst the other actors, with Kieran doing a terrific job in season 4. If next year Succession doesn't win all the possible awards at Emmy, something is very wrong with the TV Academy.

    Is anyone else really upset about this end/shiv? Like I kinda didn't expect Ken to win but I'll admit I was really rooting for him and rather happy when it looked like he would get it. I felt like the ending was just as much a blow to me as it was to Ken. And Shiv...like why? What's the logic in her decision? Someone explain it cause I really do not get it. Does she *really* hate Ken so much that she would rather sell to Mattson who made a fool out of her? Or was she thinking about Tom and actually doing something for his benefit for a change? Wasn't she just really pissed off at him? What changed? I kinda hate Shiv for that move at the end there. Like we were just all on board. Also, how would she feel if Ken really did off himself after that I wonder? Also, Frank...why wasn't he on Ken's side? Wasn't he more or less in his corner in the last few episodes or rather the whole show? So many questions swirling in my head...

      It seemed clear to me that Shiv was upset after Kendall broke Roman's stitches open, her body language *completely* changed between the scene before and after Kendall did that, and we see her glance at Roman throughout the meeting. She had previously very passionately wanted to fuck over Mattson and Tom, so it's just the obvious thing that changed her mind. Logan could abuse Roman and still keep Shiv's loyalty, but Kendall can't. Kendall is the one who fucked it up for himself.

    Very well done finale -telling how they only featured Connor for small part of it, since everyone else forgot him too. Also the others overcame all obstacles but what stopped them winning was themselves.
    Although i think they would be healthier away from Waystar. All Roman cared about was his father's approval which he never (and never would have) got. The Tom/Greg fight was surprisingly vicious. Only character that seemed slightly not as awful as usual was Caroline 😂 Shivs acting has been class this season, and just left feeling heart sorry for all of the kids, they never stood a chance with their parents.

    I really don't know what to think about this series. The entire things was incredible and while I don't know what I expected from an ending...this really wasn't it. It feels like we've seen Kendall grow so much since the first episode, certainly more than other characters. So to see all the growth just be for nothing kind of pisses me off. Mattson and even Shiv in a way wins. Sure Logan wanted to sell the company but so he could use the money for something else not just so he could die and some other person could take over his legacy. I think if this series ended with Kendall buying Pierce by himself and giving a speech similar to how Logan gave a speech to pump up the ATN news crew before the election would've been perfect. He would loose, Tom could be CEO but we would see that he is reborn, that he is following in his fathers footsteps. But this? This is just sad.

    "New Jess" Wow, Kendall. Not bitter, huh?
    Shiv should have seen it coming with Matsson. He never told her exactly that she would be the American CEO. He only led her to believe it.
    13:20-13:32 I love these moments with the siblings. They remind us that, despite their many, many issues, the Roys are a family.
    Greg hitting Tom back. Never thought I would see the day.
    15:36-15:59 WTF Kendall. Like father, like son.
    17:26-19:27 And just like that, it all fell apart. It's the same story with Kendall, over and over again. Close but no cigar.
