    One thought that I had was that every character got what they wanted in a perverse, monkey's paw way
    * Shiv wanted Tom to be CEO in the beginning of the show. She abandoned that when she herself became a prospect, but that was her original position, even if she was not deeply committed to it. The price? Becoming a second Caroline, a woman with power squandered by social position as a CEO's wife. She regained her relationship with Tom, yes, but it was not the one she wanted: Tom is no longer "servile" (to her). She is not in control.
    * Roman wants acceptance and deeply fears failure. His clownery is in part a bid to have a niche for himself because of his deeply felt inadequacy, a self-concept which he reaffirms through his masochism (sexual and otherwise). He embraces failure and torture on terms he can control because of the abuse he has endured. To my knowledge, he is the only Roy kid to have been physically abused by Logan. At the end of the show, he is right back where he started, having endured an extreme failure yet at the same time having asserted his own agency ( in going for the role in the first place). In doing so, he found self-acceptance or at least self-awareness. ("We're bullshit.")
    * Kendall wanted to be his father. And he got that in every way except for the CEO role. In the funeral episode he was very obviously a Logan 2.0, terrorizing his own kids in the same way Logan did ("everything I did I did for my children"). Ewan says that Logan, at some point, decided to stop trying to be good. Kendall than stood up and more or less declared that he had made the same decision ("I hope it's in me"). Ultimately, he treated Shiv the same way Logan did, having gone from "Fuck the patriarchy" to "I am the eldest boy." He treated Roman the same way Logan did: with physical abuse, if not in his violent hug than at least in the boardroom confrontation when he grabs his face. Kendall wanted to be Logan. He got that. And it was hollow, because it turns out what he wanted was not to be Logan after all: he wanted Logan to accept him and love him. And now that he *is* Logan, and he *hates* himself, he has nothing.
    * Tom wanted security under the protection of a powerfuk leader (initially, Logan) and a relationship with Shiv. He got both of those things in Mattson and in the Graduate-esque closing scene in which Shiv reluctantly takes his hand. Yet it is clear that now that he has those things, he has changed. He has a relationship with Shiv now, but does he want it anymore? "Honestly, Shiv, I don’t know." And Mattson's dynamic is much more malevolent than Logan's. If we want to build on the Greek/Oedipal thing, The patriarch is no longer a father-(in-law)-figure, he is now an overt sexual threat ("I want to fuck her.").

    • @fightsports66

      What power did Caroline have ? When did she have power over Logan and how did she squander it ?

    • @HizzyHay
      @HizzyHay  Год назад +14

      I keep thinking about Tom and Shiv (and this goes to the arguments that with make the show live on) and I think there’s actually a good chance they might be in a good position. Mattson might be a powerful leader but he’s a psycho, they have all the ammo on that. Also he doesn’t even seem like he has a ton of ideas, he says he doesn’t need Shiv for politics because of how easy it is after one day of trying.
      Great assessment of all their monkey’s paw arcs. I thought your but about Kendall the end was brilliant.

    • @joebailey8294
      @joebailey8294 Год назад +14

      @@biggyls4297 yes, I think that makes sense as her knee jerk reaction, but you can see her opinion on Kendall start to sour when they get to the office. In the end, she’s put in the position of choosing Ken or Tom as CEO at the board meeting. I think she comes to the conclusion that Tom is the better option for her (especially considering the baby). She and Tom spent the whole season building up their relationship

    • @HizzyHay
      @HizzyHay  Год назад +15

      I think that’s a possibility, but I really think her logic at the day of the vote was “I can’t let Kendall win”

    • @bkimatab
      @bkimatab Год назад +3

      Yep. She was disgusted at the idea of kendall taking their father's spot because he didnt deserve it. But if the alternative CEO had been anyone else, she would have bit the bullet and voted for Kendall and kept the business in the family. With Tom being CEO, it just added the extra layer of "at least it still keeps Waystar close to the family this way" and has her future kids in a symbolic line of succession (only symbolic since the family doesnt own it anymore). And I love how miserable that makes her cuz she'll never be free from the idea that she'll never get what she deserves and will have to remain underneath people she believes herself superior to (while also being an inevitably horrible mother). So poetic.

      @h33-q8w Год назад +2

    Shiv is right that Kendall could not do the job, but that is not the reason she betrays him. She might be fooling herself that that is the reason she changes sides, but in reality she just can't bring herself to let Kendall "win".

    I think Succession is a combo of Shakespearean comedy and tragedy. Armstrong cares deeply about these follies and romances and shit that characters find themselves in. He structures them very intentionally. Greg with Dasha Nekrasova’s character, whoever Logan is dating at a given time, Conwilla of course. The show is obviously more tragedy, but I appreciate the implementation of these very polygamous love stories (Gerri and Rome, Greg and the two different ladies at the end of s3, Shiv and the Jake gyllenhaal guy; Tom, the prostituite girl and Rome, etc.). I always think of Smiles of a Summer Night by Bergman as much as I think of the Seventh Seal or something with this show.

    I think the scene between Tom and Matsson in Sweden wasn't actually a strike... though it may seem so at first glance, when you rewatch it, you realize that Tom's answer wasn't some bullshit suck up answer, of him trying to act all fake insightful by trying to bring up some The Economist article about France like Greg did. His answer was actually insightful. It was a commentary on the American "post imperial" mindset. It showed that Tom understood the American public as head of ATN, and that someone with such an American perspective, which Matsson was lacking, would be useful to keep around if Matsson was going to be buying Waystar. You can see on Matsson's expression that he was actually somewhat impressed by Tom's response, while he did not care for Greg's fake wittiness at all. It's those brilliant scenes with their little nuances that make the show so good and worth rewatching.

    I get why a lot of women fans rooted for Shiv, she screamed underdog woman in a male dominant enviroment during a time that we hope someday women have equal footing in business, but the brilliance was Shiv was fake. She used that to further her selfish desires and got fans to ignore her really ugly treatment of the man she just married. Instead they backed her and thought Tom weak... That always upset me cause the truth I felt was right there in plain sight... Tom, at least knows how to love and wants to love. (as corny as that sounds)
    I heard two very good female reviwer podcasters talking crap about Tom after Connors Wedding, cause he makes that bad joke to greg, and they said oh hes just worried about himself.... Like, the man let the kids all say goodbye, he was a good man. He's sad too. Like, lay off the guy lol.
    Just wierd how we all have slightly different perspectives...
    Show is modern day drama masterpiece that will be watched 100 years from now.

    It depends on what you mean by "won". Ebba's fate revealed how it is to work for a thin skin tyrant such as Matsson and his close hatamoto such as Oskar, Ebba is already his compatriot let alone all American subordinates he and Oskar despise (refer to their conversations in Swedish).

      I think at the end of the day Tom wanted to be recognized. So it is a win to him despite the obvious baggage he took on with it.

    It absolutely could not have been Kendall I'm sorry. The ending is fucking brilliant. There isn't really a winner even though it's "Tom," anyway - Mattson takes over their company and they completely lose control aside from Tom, who is essentially a puppet for Mattson now anyway. Perfect ending

    It's S3 E4 - "Lion in the Meadow" the episode with Adrien Brody, when they're eating lunch by the sea. You can see a lot of analogous shots of Logan and Kendall framed by the ocean at around 46:00. They are facing the camera, however, so it's a fun inversion.

    I was rooting for Kendall at first but to be honest seeing Tom win was more satisfying; it just never felt like it could become a reality, especially with the way the plot was pointing.
    He was always what Kendall should’ve been. At the beginning Kendall was a serious businessman and had his own important role in the company. If he had just stuck to his role then he would still have the trust of the company and his family. He then could’ve worked on a more long term plan to influence the company and perhaps become CEO. Instead he had this delusion of quickly turning the company around and becoming known as some kind of visionary. In trying to usurp the company he betrayed everyone he worked with and ended up losing by trying to succeed on his own terms. So it is very much so his hubris that cost him what he wanted so dearly.
    Tom on the other hand humbly accepted his position in the company and that’s why Logan and eventually Matsson respected him and elevated him. It was finally good to see him earn the top spot as he was the only one who actually seemed to be actively involved and productive for the company (like Kendall was at the beginning). He deserved it more than the siblings because he prioritized executing his job and keeping it above all else. The siblings weren’t serious enough about their jobs and they knew it themselves.

    I knew Shiv would back out. It just isn't in her nature to "let" the "dumber" person succeed. The problem with Shiv, is she always thinks she is the most intelligent person. That doesn't bode well in life or business. Her biggest downfall. Tom earned it, deserved it and was loyal to Shiv for most of the series. He realized she was okay with him rotting in prison and never had any intention on helping him. He did what Shiv would have done and deep down she respects him for it.

      Fair enough, apologies if I spoiled the show for you. I thought the “won” could be viewed a little more ambiguous than people are taking it and I couldn’t think of a video title besides this one. Working on a new one now since a decent amount of people have commented about this.

    1. Isn't kendall the frog? That's him who is stung by shiv and they but drown. Also, kendall element is water, but it's always unclear if it's peaceful or dangerous for him.
    2. I think the end is a good ending for every characters. Logan was a monster. It was stated by Ewan during his funeral, and even by shiv and kendall. It's not his fault, he had his own traumas, but that's how it is. Now that he is dead and his promised empire gone forever, all kids can finally grown up in their own way. Roman doesn't have to keep acting like a damaged kid anymore. Kendall is looking at the water, death, but he isn't inside it, which means that he is free to do on his own. Shiv and Tom accepted their flaws and can get rid of their negative dynamic. There will be no power fighting anymore since he is in control now, she can't even sting him anymore. Maybe she could even overpass her own trauma and become the mother she never had, because she can't play the game anymore.
    Sure it is an open ending and I don't think there is good answer. But I see possibilities offered to characters trapped from the beginning to their father evil influence. None of them could have win as they were kids and kids can't run an empire. It's a journey about kids, not serious people, becoming adults.
    Ps: Also there is Connor Roy but he was interested in politics from a very young age.

    The finale did leave me unsatisfied tbh. I know it’s all about how people don’t change and the cycle doesn’t stop, but for a finale, I really want something that sets it apart from every other episode and gives some closure.

    • @HizzyHay
      @HizzyHay  Год назад +3

      I think that’s what I was feeling at first but I’ve since believed it is some sense of closure that people care about these figures of industry now that the Waystar is no longer what it was. Objectively for anyone else in the show getting an unthinkable amount of wealth should be seen as a win but it’s not to these people.

    • @bkimatab

      "gives some closure" THIS SHOW THO??? 😂

    • @bkimatab
      @bkimatab Год назад +2

      But in all serious, I think the finale actually did give us some closure, its just hard to accept it. Cuz the fact is, none of the siblings deserved to take their father's seat. They all have shown throughout the series that their flaws are large enough to lead them to failure and they dont have the capacity for further growth (cuz they grew up spoiled and arrogant and never truly understood what made their father such a powerful person- his struggles). Is Logan to blame for that? Absolutely. But was Logan right all along? Sadly, yes. The show repeatedly told us that Logan always wins. Shiv and Roman and, depressingly, Kendall, had to realize that in the end. Thats closure, it just doesnt feel like it cuz of how cold and brutal and painful it feels (like Logan's love ❤) .

    • @moisesjimenez4391
      @moisesjimenez4391 Год назад +1

      Yeah I’m with BayBe on this one; I think we all knew in the back of our heads that none of the siblings were going to be able to keep the company alive but Tom was actually professional enough and competent enough to become a CEO and still had the trust of everyone in the company. He earned it by being a loyal person and building his relationships for business not for usurping. Despite all of the abuse and agony he suffered at the hands of the Roys, he came out on top and got the very thing they coveted by being a trustworthy and hard working person.
      That IS a hopeful ending and a very realistic one at that. There is a quote in the Bible’s book of Proverbs that says, “A wise servant will rule over a shameful son and will share his inheritance among the brothers.” This observation very much applies to the ending of Succession and offers hope to people with good qualities.
