Marilyn Monroe was a massive fan of Ella. She got her booked at the Mocambo in Hollywood, where Ella wasn't allowed to sing because she was Black, by telling the owner she'd sit at a table in front every night & the publicity for the club would be massive. The owner booked Ella, Marilyn kept her part of the bargain, & as Ella said herself, she never had to play small venues again.

Actually it's not her range that could shatter glass, it was her increadible ability to hit the right frequency and perfectly maintain the pitch causing the sound wave to resonate the glass until it went . That's what causes glass to shatter. She was increadible and I was lucky enough to hear her in person. Her pitch, range and quality of voice were exceptional but her ability to swing, her phrasing and timing were out of this world.
