My father immigrated from Mexico in the early 50's and he was a big fan of Nina Simone "freedom is mine!" that lyric has always stuck with me since my Dad always sung it like he breaking free. RIP Dad you're free!!!!
I absolutely love watching these boys listen to the greats for the first time, but I just don't understand how they have never heard of Nina Simone or several other artist they've done videos on. Nina Simone should be taught in the history books! They need to have classes at school on music appreciation to expose our youth to the culture and history.
As a 60 something gay man who's favorite artists are Billie Holiday, Bobbie Gentry and Nina Simone , the beautiful reaction of this young man to such artistry did my heart a hell of a lot of good. Thank you
I'm a few years older than you, but as a mid-60s gay man (who's originally from Gentry's home state) I agree. I first heard her when I was in elementary school -- like in 1961, '62? My sister had a record but no cover. "Forbidden Fruit" was the track that nailed it down for me -- "Eve and Adam had a garden, everything was great, then one day a voice said, 'Pardon, miss, my name is snake...'" I looked for that elpee and that track for years and years...finally found a British re-issue on CD several years ago. Hallelujah!!!
My dad used to say he knew an artist "had it" when he had to pause the record and just walk it off around the room for a bit. You personified that beautifully just now
@Alex Leblanc white loved my teens wow music now made my Soul always. Get rid of this shit it's Music Soul not colour never let this beautiful music die.

This song can be interpreted so many different ways: release from slavery, release from prison, release from a miserable relationship, or finding God. A new dawn, a new day, a new life.
My partner of 5 years dumped me (decades ago) and I spent 3 months listening to Janis Joplin and licking my wounds. Then I moved to a new house with my best (platonic) friend. We played Nina as we packed. We played Nina as we moved. We named the house Feeling Good and held a wake for her in that home when she passed. Even now I think of going back to Feeling Good.
OMG, This is the first time I heard Nina Simone singing this song! I've heard many covers of it, but I'm blown away with her artistry!! Holy crap! Wow!
This is truly one of the most emotional songs in my life. It was the song we played at my mums funeral to remember her beautiful life, but it was also my first dance at my wedding!! It tells every story!!
Another artist told me once that the only thing he wanted to do is turn people on to things they never thought about before. That's what this show is about! It is joy. I love it.
The documentary “What Happened to Miss Simone” is on NETFLIX. You should definitely watch it. It is so relevant for the times we are in now with racial bias and the “new” Civil Rights movement. She was a force.
@@citimutts3288 The title is _What Happened, Miss Simone?_ ruclips.net/video/SdWfYz6VduM/видео.html Her 1999 interview on BBC ruclips.net/video/8olEruTT_io/видео.html
“You’re gonna feel what I’m singing”. That is the best description of Nina Simone’s work that I’ve ever heard. I’m so happy to see your reaction to this.
Hey, sweetheart- I had the privilege to see Miss Nina in concert - in the late 80's - she was ICONIC - dealt with a lot of racial prejudice back in the day -- she was an amazing concert pianist who was denied playing in the greatest halls in the U.S. - in later years, she lived in France - she was understandably bitter about the opportunities denied to her -- and very outspoken about that --she has so many fantastic songs -- one of my favorites is: My Baby Just Cares for Me - ruclips.net/video/eYSbUOoq4Vg/видео.html - there are many versions, but this one is super-simple and features her piano talent - so many, many, great songs by Nina - she NEVER got the credit she deserved - she is worth doing some research!
With the way things are in the country at the moment, you should listen to her 60s protest song "Mississippi G-dd*mn." Ms Simone wrote that one. For a completely different take on this song, you should hear the songwriter, Anthony Newley, perform it. Ms Simone's version is iconic, but it's interesting to hear the original, too.
This song makes me cry every time I listen to it and I’m ecstatic with your passionate reaction to hearing the remarkably brilliant Nina Simone for the first time. Yes, the pain in her voice you can feel it shoot through you like lightening and you will never be the same and thank God for that!!!! Love your channel!
I feel joy in my heart seeing someone hear Nina Simone for the first time and have such a deep and emotional reaction. She was an uncompromising woman. Her voice is rich, soulful, and fearless. I love this channel. You guys are precious. I come back again and again to witness your love of music.
You're one of my new favorite humans. Keep doing the good work of filling your own ears with great music, and introducing it out into the world. You matter!
Love love love your reaction! It's a song that gives me the best chills every time. It was written in 1964 by Anthony Newley, a UK singer songwriter, actor and theatre performer.
The one, the only, the high priestess herself, Empress Nina Simone. She could play Bach from memory, jump over to jazz just for giggles, and pull the heart out of you with her soulful pieces.
In 1977, NASA launched two spacecraft - Voyager 1 and 2 - to explore Jupiter, Saturn and beyond. Each carried a 12-inch gold plated record. Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode was on the record. The spacecraft are now more than 10 billion miles from Earth, beyond the reaches of our solar system. As far as anyone knows, the records are still intact, but no alien life has found them yet.
I was so impressed when he said he felt goosebumps. I'm one entire goosebump every time I hear this. She was an amazing talent that not enough people know about.
From a company that uses music to bring joy to people with dementia, we want to say you are doing a wonderful thing bringing a wide array of music to new generations and allowing those who loved this music in their youth to re-experience that feeling of discovery for the first time. #MusicIsMedicine. Bless.
I saw a documentary at a film festival, maybe five years ago, about people doing that - it was both heartbreaking and heartlifting at the same time. Brava to you!
dude, it's really heartwarming to see how genuine is your passion and sensibility for good music. it makes us all remind to not forget our own excitement.
People! Nina simone was great. Classically trained pianist, who started singing jazz clubs because she wasnt allowed to play concert piano because of her color. She was a strong activist. Better listen to strange fruit and goddamn Mississippi. I've loved her for over 50 years.
I cant bring myself to ever recommend strange fruit because that song fucking kills me every time and I just can't bring myself to others to that deep ass sorrow. An important song for sure but Jesus. Its an open wound of a song.
She wasn't prevented from playing classical piano because of her color. There was an older neighbor in Tryon - Nina called this woman her white mama - who gave her piano lessons for free. That same woman and some other people in the community collected money to pay for Nina to go the Juliard, which she did. But more than anything, she wanted to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. After finally auditioning, she didn't make the cut. They told her she was very good, close to being accepted, but told she needed a little more work. One of the professors offered to tutor her for free until she was able to audition for the next term, but Nina said no. For the rest of her life she held a grudge, blaming her failure to get into Curtis on racism. The Curtis Institute had accepted black students for years, and there were some black female students enrolled at the time Nina auditioned, but she didn't know that. Anyway, everything happens for a reason, and maybe if she'd gotten her wish, she'd be a classical pianist and nobody would be able to enjoy her singing. Her loss was our gain. BTW it was while singing in clubs that Eunice Waymon changed her name to Nina Simone. She knew her parents wouldn't approve of that job, so she used the stage name.
Nina Simone is, IMO, the most important and talented singer in American history. She did a lot with the civil rights movement. This song is about victories and hope. Mississippi Goddamn is about the the murder of Medgar Evers in Mississippi and the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham that killed four black girls.
Feelin' Good was the first song I ever heard by Nina Simone. I was passing a store and they were playing it. I stood there frozen with all those emotions you describe coursing through me, but I couldn't move. Then afterwards I dug up everything I could find on her. The way I felt was that her emotions were belying the words and I could feel her pain in spite of the words she was singing.
Watching that first time reaction to Nina Simone is like discovering her all over again. The emotions she evokes are pure and raw. Loving your exploration of ‘music’- this is what brings the world together. We all sing in different languages and genres but it unites us. I will be 67 soon and this is such a refreshing ‘show’. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
I am so happy to see a new generation coming to appreciate the extraordinary Nina Simone. One of the absolute best there ever was, or ever will be. You should also listen to My Baby Just Cares For Me, and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (which she sang the original version, and the Animals did a cover of).
Congratulations, you have just met one of the greatest singers that ever was! No it's time for Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin 😊 Listen to respect and you will hear Whitney Houston mother in the background vocals 😊 And you have surely heard of Whitney right?
The first time I heard Nina Simone singing this song I thought I was going to go into cardiac arrest. It was revolutionary for me to hear her voice. I love it that you loved her the same. It is impossible to not realize that we are listening to one of the best voices and interpreters ever when listening to her.
When children are born, and generations transition to the new, the unexpected, even the impossible, there will always be the classics. Nina Simone must live forever in the hearts and minds of future generations. Her style and substance should never be forgotten, and should always be emulated wherever possible. It is good to see the young people catch on to what they are being denied from by this fast food consumer culture.
"This is a straight up, 'You gonna feel what I'm sayin'' song". YES!!! What a blessing to watch you hear her for the first time. Thanks so much for all your videos.
it doesn’t even matter the words, it’s the WAY she sings it. that is the voice of wisdom. you just wanna soak in it, it transcends everything. i don’t care where you’re from.
After my Dad came out of the British military, he bought a Nina Simone record with Feeling Good and My Baby Just Cares for Me. As a little girl, I remember dancing on his feet to her music. Beautiful voice but I instantly feel about 5 years old when I hear her. 😂
This had me in tears. Nina’s voice. Your reaction. So emotional. She was an exceptional woman with an exceptional talent. I felt your awe. The one we all have for her. I hope you’re gonna keep listening to all her music. You give me hope for the future. Thank you.

Just so astonishing.
i watched jolene, johnny cash hurt, dream on aerosmith, and livin on a prayer bon jovi and i loved you. but you watching nina? yeah. YEAH. yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah.
Dude, when those horns kick in after her opening always sends shivers down my spine. Great reaction vid.
This song can be interpreted so many different ways: release from slavery, release from prison, release from a miserable relationship, or finding God. A new dawn, a new day, a new life.
or simply falling in love. to me this has always been a lovesong.
It was orginally written by white men so no.
@@Secret-Serenity Art stands alone. Doesn't matter who wrote it - you decide what it makes you feel.
I see it as a murder ballad. She's my idol & as close to sacred as I get. She is who I name myself after. Praise be.
Holy crap! Wow!
Same, I had never heard Nina Simone do it. It has a whole different feeling and makes a LOT more sense when she sings it. I love it.
Same here! WOW.
She was the original for the song. Everyone else did a cover of it
Dude.
Appreciate the rec! Adding it to my list
Yes, just going to say this.
That documentary was amazing. It was so sad at times, but goddamn she was a total badass.

Not to be missed
“You’re gonna feel what I’m singing”. That is the best description of Nina Simone’s work that I’ve ever heard. I’m so happy to see your reaction to this.
This made me cry. Music transcends everything.
Me too I cried. Her music touch my soul.
He frickin nailed it with "You gone feel what I'm saying" song. That was brilliant.
Have you guys heard her song.... "Mississippi Godamn"
Definitely worth a listen.
Oh ye, Thanks for the infectious positivity.😷👍
So wonderful that you managed to see her play & sing live, it must’ve been an incredible experience. Thank you for sharing it with everyone.
Wow, lucky you; some great memories there, for sure!
O M G! So lucky you, and you are so right, but she was special.
SO JEALOUS! LEGEND! Troubled yet talented~ Great Netflix doc!
I still have the newspaper clippings from when she passed away. Nina Simone was so incredible, one of my all time favorite voices to hear.
Oh, I've never heard the Newley rendition. Gonna look for that now.
@@wideawake5630 no nor me, going to check it too.
In the ghetto by Elvis Presley is a great song too. It has a sad deep message.
You matter!
Absolutely
Amen, amen, amen to all of that
Same! Just subscribed and followed on insta. Love this guy!!
His and his twins heartfelt, immediate and emotional connection to the new music, gets me in the feels every time♥️🌟
Same here.
So sad that she wasn't able to go to the Curtis Institute. The world missed out on a wonderful classical pianist.
Well said
Amen to that💚🌟💯
Anytime I hear her voice I can face another day with gusto!
If there’s one song we had to send into space, this should be it.👑
In 1977, NASA launched two spacecraft - Voyager 1 and 2 - to explore Jupiter, Saturn and beyond.
This is one of the best songs ever!
So true!
Yassss
From a company that uses music to bring joy to people with dementia, we want to say you are doing a wonderful thing bringing a wide array of music to new generations and allowing those who loved this music in their youth to re-experience that feeling of discovery for the first time. #MusicIsMedicine. Bless.
You are doing wonderful work.
What a joy that must be to witness. Thank you for all you do!!
I saw a documentary at a film festival, maybe five years ago, about people doing that - it was both heartbreaking and heartlifting at the same time. Brava to you!
Well done 👍
dude, it's really heartwarming to see how genuine is your passion and sensibility for good music. it makes us all remind to not forget our own excitement.
Strange Fruit is Billie Holiday
@@juansierralonche9864 thank you. When I saw her playing at Lenny's on the Pike, I guess she still held the grudge.
"You're gonna feel what I'm saying" Spot On. It hurts, it feels good. She's a genius.
I really love it when you have to stop and walk around. Not everyone is wired to be able to Feel music like that
Your reaction moved me to tears. It made me wish I could hear this song for the first time again
So appreciate your reaction! Nina was a straight up goosebump singer, so happy you love it too.
The first time I ever heard the song or heard of Nina Simone was on Chuck. I felt cheated.
This reaction is so sincere and so appropriate. We must protect him at all costs, I stan for this type of content!
She was a history making woman. Very powerful and true to her convictions.
Absolutely !
Love you, young man, and I love Nine Simone. It made me laugh/cry when you had to get up and walk around. Yeah, Miss Nina will do that to you.
Congratulations, you have just met one of the greatest singers that ever was! No it's time for Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin 😊 Listen to respect and you will hear Whitney Houston mother in the background vocals 😊 And you have surely heard of Whitney right?
My dream if I met a genie would be to sing as good as Ella Fitzgerald. She was so gifted.
“Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”, “Sinnerman” , and “Four Women” are faves of mine. 🤗 Happy listening young brotha!
Don't let me be misunderstood is my second favorite song of all time.
Sinnerman was awesome!
Sugar In My Bowl
I Love "Four Women" it's a great song
Yes to sinnerman and don’t let me be misunderstood! Will have to listen to the last one. Also, love my baby cares for me and Baltimore.
THIS song by THIS artist is an absolute masterpiece . Each time it's giving me goose bumps...
When she started to scat and you lost your mind. Ah! My heart! That was a pleasure to watch. "Ne me quitte pas" by her will haunt you.
I love Nina Simone. She's one of the best singer's of all time.
wild is the wind
I LOVE Wild Is The Wind ♡
@Tammy Crawforc Esperanza Spalding's a great musician.
Yes please listen to wild is the wind. Her voice is so beautiful and haunting.
I just discovered this song a couple years ago and I'm over 50. Yes this song does it to you
The first time I heard Nina Simone singing this song I thought I was going to go into cardiac arrest.
Thank you.
Made me cry too…seeing an open mind and heart experience the power and beauty of a genius like Ms. Simone for the very first time
I listen to this just riding down the road, Nina Simone and Etta James.
Etta James, too.....yes..
Looks like he was having a Holy Ghost moment.
Well yeah. That was only the second time I heard that, and I was about there, myself.
That was epic 🤘🏼 I listen to Simone and read books about her. You literally paused this song to say you could already feel her pain, without knowing what she'd been through. You genuinely bring these songs back to life with new ears and interpretations on life today... RUclips keeps me from commenting, so please read about her or or watch her bios
You might hurt yourself when you listen to Ms. Simone Sing “Wild is the Wind.” Looking forward to you hearing it! Listen on young King!
My favourite Bowie song!
Nina's version of this is my all time fave song. Bowie sis his because if Nina.
🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌Yeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!!! I can't believe you reacted to this power classic and MASTER artist. Nina Simone was show stopper in her time. There were none that could compare. You are right, if you don't like and know music, then you wouldn't understand the VIBES that come from a song like this. I LOOOOOOOVE you guyz!! You are the number ONE reaction channel on the YT. Keep 'em coming bro!!!
Raw amazing vibes!!! Ohhhhh you just gotta BLAST it so loud and feel the power of her voice and that orchestra accompaniment!!! 🔥🔥🔥
I love to see youngins appreciating this music. I subscribed strictly off your facial reactions...you took it to church! You’re an old soul, keep doin’
I'm new to seeing these reactions and it warms my heart to see people expanding their music horizons. Also, Nina Simone should be a solid foundation to anyone's musical education.
Check out Nina Simone's "Sinner Man." It's about 10 minutes long and worth every second. It's a genre of music all on its own.
I will thank you
Sinnerman is one of my absolute favorites by Nina Simone. I can listen to it on repeat for days! 💕
I was just about to type out a request for "Sinner Man." Would love to see his reaction to that one. It's an auditory work of art.
It totally makes The Thomas Crown Affair (the newer one w/Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo). Sinner Man sets the sexy and smart tone. Get the soundtrack, too.

Agree. Total goosebumps. You definitely feel everything she’s saying. Life.
You should do “Strange Fruit” and really absorb the lyrics. It has never not made me cry.
Julie Anderson Came to the comment section hoping someone would recommend this song. It should be the anthem of BLM. Either Nina's version or the original version by Billie Holiday.
@@cathleencooks748 I'm a woman of color and I need to tell you I do not support BLM because they're a terrorists hate group, nor do I support the KKK because there are a terrorists hate group. Please educate yourself.
💯 her version is so moving! Way more intense than Billie Holiday imo
Billie Holliday's version is the only one I know, but man...that one will break your heart.
I'm surprised more ppl haven't suggested this. I also came to the comments specifically looking for this exact suggestion. I wept the 1st time I heard it & choke back tears every time since. I would want them to choose a lyric video so they don't miss a single word.
