“There’s something about older black singers that I just love. Soul?” ...Yes. You’re hearing & feeling SOUL music. Newer singers think soul means emotion or passion. But soul is deeper than that. The chills you get don’t lie.
That's Nina on the piano she was a classically trained pianist pure class ....legend in her own lifetime ..you goin lookin for your musical roots ..you bring one big shovel man I would ...I've been listening to Black American gospel music ,soul since I was 12yrs old now I'm a 67yrs old white man in Ireland and praise God ..still listening enjoy your journey son ...
I'm sixty years "white" woman in Wisconsin... and although my family was always "musical" - I had no older relatives to show me the way... so I was in my late twenties/thirties before I came to appreciate a lot of this (while living in Boston area) my best friend and I used to play cards (not for money - but always joking: if you win - whatever you want) - I won big, and he took me to a Nina Simone concert -- I knew a bit -but she just blew me away! -- she was the "Empress" -- I'll never forget it...
Well GinMae I recently replyed to a documentary of Lisa,, Simone Nina's daughter telling the story of meeting her Moma in 66/67 backstage when I was 14yrs old because I was in her fan club and yeah what an experience but to my amazement Lisa herself replyed to my comment which I was so flattered ....bottom line you can't buy class ye got it or ye don't ...Stay safe in these difficult times..and Let the music play ...
@@jackbutler2989 You got that right, Jack! What an amazing experience that must have been - both meeting Mom and hearing from daughter -- you stay safe, too -- and yes, the music will always play!
Her story was so tragic and her talent is a national treasure. She could have done so much more but what the world and her allowed we are truly blessed.
The Queen! A musical genius. “Old” Black singers changed us all with their voices, brilliance snd music. A Change Is Gonna Come is a must by Sam Cooke. It’s a joy watching you react. ❤️
Simone's version of "I Put a Spell On You" is super torchy too. Also, check out her version of "Nobody's Fault But Mine" and then follow that up with Led Zeppelin's version. You won't be disappointed.
I can't believe you never reacted to Nina Simone. Been watching you for months and you have reacted to so many older songs. This is the song I listen to before very USTA 'old lady' tennis match. It's calms and it peps you up at the same time. But MOST importantly it gives ME that confident swagger. Love this song.
She is my goddess. i was 19.young middle class white girl, 1965 ..just back to school from Freedom Christmas in Alabama, registering voters ...heart broken from first love, full of shock at my realization of the racism i am heir to...hurt to my soul and my teacher that had been driving for 12 hours, walked in the house and put on Nina Simone singing Cotton Eyed Joe and I have never been the same. She belongs to all ages...she is genre-less. she overcomes. Listen to Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. part of Nina's soul. Maybe by yourself...no cameras. Listen to everything she wrote...and the music Nina invented. Feel her.
ITS THE SOUL SOUND!!!!! Nailed it. Plus hard crafted instrumental mastery whether voice, piano etc. she was a concert level pianist who became a lounge singer n then a legend! See the documentary Whatever Happened Miss Simone!!
What you’re listening to and hearing is GREATNESS! REAL voices, instruments, soul (because you feel it in your heart and deep down in your being) and NO autotunes. Peace...Be and Stay Safe!!!
I remember where I was sitting and living when Nina Simone's voice cut through....She is amazing! Movies about her life and "Here Comes the Sun," Mississippi Goddamn --many more songs....
Your reaction did not disappoint 💯💯💯 Do "I Put a Spell on You" and "Sinnerman". It probably sounds familiar because she is well loved and her music is in many films. Those were violins, and with her strong vibrato, it's a divine combination. Watch her perform live!
Yes the violin. Love Nina Simone! The days before auto-tune, you could hear the nuances of the voices, people had to be good at singing. The best ones, to me had the talent & technique, but most of all the ❤. You could hear all that before auto-tune.
You're right And it's not only autotune killing the voice, it's also faked/computer produced instrumentals, bad arrangements, missing harmonies and most of all bad mixing without any dynamics A good mix must breath, most songs today don't do that at all...
Even people who don't know they've heard Nina have heard Nina. No other artist in history has had their music in as many movies, tv shows and commercials. Her version of Ne Me Quitte Pas makes me cry every time and I've been listening to her for over 20 years. She is utterly timeless and so under recognized its a crime.
There's a good documentary on Netflix I think called "What Happened, Miss Simone" that takes a good look at her and her career. I never heard of her until I saw that docu, and I never knew about this song or any of her others until then. So unique and power level 9000.
Nina Simone is an American Treasure; she was never satisfied with an arrangement to any song until she infused soul into them. Another legendary song and artist you would enjoy checking out is "Stay With Me " by Lorraine Ellison! Pure Gold!
Part of the instrumental has been used in commercials! Blasphemy! LOL Loved your reaction. She touched you deeply, yes she did. If you love her, this song touches you every time. Cried twice today listeining to it. Once during your reaction. Get to know all her songs, you'll be the richer for it. I think that what you are looking for as the type of sound that this is, it"s a "slave" or "negro spiritual" sound. It touches the soul so deep, you almost feel like you're spriit is leaving your body! Check out the songs used in Alvin Ailey's dance "Revelations." for the choral sound. Peace and Love
NIna is very special. She trained as a concert pianist and then moved into Jazz and Soul and wrote some of her own material, (Young Gifted And Black is brilliant as is Mississippi Goddam), and her versions of Wild Is The Wind and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood I'm sure would move you.
Yes sir, bring back the lounges, the women who had demure, soulful. Modern women flash too much.. You're great to watch react and listen Like those keys in the piano in the background. Terrific stuff.
Just checked out your reaction to the late Ms.Etta James and i loved your reaction brutha keep it up you have a knew subscriber...you have to check out Ms.Etta James other song that made her famous its called "AT LAST'
I meant to type you this recommendation after your KC and the sunshine band song but I forgot. There are almost 0 reactions out there online for two of the biggest dance/club/disco hits ever. They are both by Cheryl Lynn. What she does with her voice and both of those songs is amazing. The songs are “star love” and “got to be real”
You won’t regret these two: Billy Ocean "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" Seals “Crazy”...BTW, make sure it’s the “Young” version of Seals (when he had hair). The video & song is outstanding!! 👍👍👍
I know how much you appreciate great talent, especially voices. Not sure how you feel about the violin, but the violin IS Lucia Micarelli's voice and it's mind blowingly beautiful. Check out her Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody medley (she's wearing a green dress). Your videos bring me joy!
Blues! It's blues! The great ancestor of all your other music that your parents turned their back on. From back when people actually sang out of an ancient tradition -- and actually SANG.

She's also the pianist. Just badass.
No synthesize,pure voice

Something you love about them? Like...they were awesome, maybe?

She also sang My baby just ares for me. It's a lot of fun.💛
If I am not mistaken. This song has been sampled in commercials.
Bro the amount of energy this song has I can’t find it in any other song, it leaves you speechless

This is one of my favourite songs, Ninas on fire!
Son House "Death Letter Blues", because Nina didn´t leave much to say. Stunning voice, beautiful song.

I think it was in a commercial in the last couple years. That’s probably where you heard it. Grrrreat song, of course!
She was an activist! Brilliant!!!!
You should play more of the motown, soul music from the past. Cannot beat it.
You got blessed son
Gotta love talent
She was fearless and powerful and oh so angry at the injustice of the world. Let Nina Simone rule the world.
