If you didn't know that Louis Armstrong was a vocalist too, you absolutely gotta listen to "What a wonderful world" -- Louis was of a generation that suffered WW1 and WW2, Prohibition, The Great Depression and Jim Crow... and yet he sings that song with such tenderness and appreciation for the little things in life ~ if his rendition doesn't make you tear up just a little, you just don't have a heart. An old man sitting on a bench, just watching the world grow and evolve beyond him ~ and seeing nothing but beauty and hope. If you're having a bad day, that song is like a good friend sitting with his/her arm around your shoulder, while you catch your breath. Written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss, and sung with such empathy by Louis. Just superb.
    * consider this, Louis (1901-1971) was born before the Wright brothers' first flight and lived until after the US had landed on the moon ~ the world evolved at lightning speed within his lifetime

@kjh861 Louis was a contemporary of my Grandma and she used to say that all the time. Actually, she was born in 1898 and she used to say that her life spanned the time between “…the days of horse and buggy” to “man walking on the moon.” 💙🫶
I agree with you… I absolutely LOVE “It’s a Wonderful World.” “It won an Emmy two years after the release of “Hello Dolly” (another Emmy winning song for Louis).
[See my note elsewhere on this thread… ] 😉👍

Two great legends singing together. What could be better than that. This is timeless music that has endured for decades. Ella is such a jazz legend & performed for over 6 decades. She was known for her purity of tone & scat singing. Love her version of "Summertime". She had a great solo career but also did quite a few collaborations with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington & The Ink Spots. Some of their hits were "Dream A Little Dream Of Me", "Cheek to Cheek", "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall", & "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)".

Louis Armstong's nickname is 'Sachmo'. Check out his version of Mack the Knife. Truly a legend. You are right, once you hear him, you will always recognize him.

Mack the Knife is brilliant. The incongruity of the sweet melody and the very dark lyrics is captivating. It calls to mind the same incongruity in Warren Zevon’s Excitable Boy

And to compare and contrast, check out Ella's version of Mack live from Germany. She does some fun scatting and an impression of Luis if I remember correctly.

Girl ... Louis and Ella are legendary! Listen to all they do -- solo and together. I discovered Ela in high school thanks to the movie Swing Kids and in uni friends introduced me to Louis -- they're magical. Welcome to the world of jazz and swing and full-on goodness. (then go watch some documentaries about Louis' interesting upbringing!)

Ella will always be my first female vocal crush, if that makes any sense. I mean as a pre-pubescent kid used to climbing trees and building "secret bases", her voice struck me in a very specific way. It's difficult to describe the nuance that I am aiming for, but it would be very close to a young boy discovering girls for the first time, and having feelings; but in a non sexual way, yet still sensual and warming. And the first tingles of awakening. I just cannot pin down exactly what my heart and mind went through when I first heard Ella's voice. I'm probably not making any sense.

Ella and Louis recorded three albums "Ella & Louis" (1956) , Ella & Louis Again (1957) and "Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong: Porgy and Bess" (recorded in 1957, released in 1959). All three are masterpieces, the first two have perhaps the greatest backing instrumentalists of all time - Oscar Peterson (piano), Ray Brown (bass), Herb Ellis (guitar) and Buddy Rich (drums). Anything from the first two albums will reach your soul and make your heart weep with happiness. Allow me to suggest "Cheek to Cheek", "Can't We Be Friends?" or "They Can't Take That Away from Me" as the next Ella and Louis song you cover.

@@user-sm3ii5dk1u I saw Ella perform three times. I actually saw Both Ella and Oscar at the 1982 Kool Jazz Festival in Philadelphia at the Mann Music Center. Count Basie and his Orchestra played for about 90 minutes followed by Oscar playing solo for about 90 minutes (one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed) followed by Ella who played for about 90 minutes to close the show. Amazing experience.

  • @peterhormell1511

Yes Britt, that was “scat” singing and you are looking at TWO of the best scat singers in the history of music. Imagine a little girl with headphones on listening to these two performers for hours, and absorbing every nuance of their individual styles… and you’ll never question again how Angelina Jordan sounds so much like these legendary singers all rolled into one.
Ella and Louis (Louie is the French pronunciation of Louis - and is how Armstrong was always referred to himself) were two of Angelina’s earliest idols when she was little (…like THREE years old😳) along with Billie Holiday.
Interestingly, when Billie heard Louis improvising jazz licks on his trumpet, she said she wanted to sing like that. The two of them were major influences on each other and today we can get a glimpse of their greatness by following the career of the young prodigy from Norway, Angelina Jordan.
I’m pretty sure you’ve reacted to Angelina’s 10 year-old version of “Summertime.” For those subscribers of yours who are not familiar with Angelina, check it out (link below). Her version is uncanny in how it evokes *this* performance.
And thank you SO much for reacting to this stellar LEGENDARY performance Britt and sharing it with us. 🫶💛
    “Summertime”, Angelina Jordan:

Well said Peter. I didn't know any of that 7 years ago when I first checked out Angelina Jordan's 'When You're Smiling' video, but Louis Armstrong without the growl was the first thing that popped into my head. I then listened to his cover, which was slower and nothing like what I expected. So it seemed to me that this 8-year-old Scandinavian child had decided to sing Louis Jordan's up-tempo version using stylings picked up from Louis Armstrong. By this time I had already heard Angelina cover Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington but it was the moment I started to think I might have been witnessing a genius.

@@way2deep100 Cool information way2deep! Back in 1964 when I was six years old, the song “Hello Dolly” was at the top of the charts (and would eventually earn Armstrong an Emmy for best song of the year). I remember this because back then I used to do a mean impersonation of Louis Armstrong singing “Hello Dolly” that impressed all of my older relatives. Whenever I hear Angelina Jordan sing “I Put a Spell on You”, I am reminded of this when Angelina “growls!” I didn’t growl of course, but at that young age I replicated Louis’ “guttural” voice pretty accurately. 😳…😊

Satchmo, Louis Armstrong's nickname, was derived from that huge wide toothy gleaming smile that he had - the idea was that his grin was as wide as a satchel. So they called him Satchel Mouth, which shortens to Satchmo.

She planned to do a dance act,but the two sisters who went on before her did a dance routine,so Ella decided to sing instead and she won! I got to see her in concert towards the end of her career when her eyesight was failing and she needed help crossing the stage, but her voice was just perfect! I never got to see Louis live, but always liked him and admired his talent! Enjoyed your reaction,Britt! And when I hear this lady’s beautiful voice,my heart and mind go directly to my precious late mom,who always had an Ella 33rpm record on the hi-fi back in the 60’s!❤️❤️❤️

Louis Armstring invented vocal jazz! On top of inventing jazz, period, thru his trumpet playing. Well the latter isn't quite right of course ... but he was as instrumental as anyone in bringing jazz into popular consciousness starting in the early 1920s. And Ella was the queen of vocal jazz. They did a number of classics like this together. All of the preceding learned thanks to Angelina Jordan's getting me excited to learn more about this wonderful art form.

Thank you for this enjoyable reaction video that reignited pleasant memories.
2 of my all time favourite artists. I’ve been listening to all kind of music since I was a toddler. In the summer of 1972, I saw Ella at the Baalbek International Festival in Baalbek, Lebanon. As an 18 years old student with a limited budget, I had almost a zero chance of getting tickets to that prestigious festival. Luckily I managed to convince a family friend who was a senior security officer to let me in with my girlfriend.
Ella performed at the site of the ancient Roman ruins of the Temple of Bacchus and what a memorable performance it was.
At the time Ella was suffering from an ailment and against the advice of her doctor she said “Even if I’ll never sing again, I will not miss this festival”. 54 years later, her words and her performance is still etched in my memory with admiration and respect.
I never had the chance to see Louis Armstrong live but I’ve been listening to him as far back as I remember.

And while Louis commercially retained that nickname for decades, behind the scenes he had the fond nickname of "Pops", which came about in a "turn about is fair play" life sequence. Story: Adult Louis Armstrong had frequent trouble remembering people's names and would subsequently throw out "Pops" when speaking to someone, "Hey, Pops..." "Pops, tell me.." And as life makes of things, people began reversing it and calling Armstrong "Pops". Bing Crosby, for example, called his friend, Armstrong, "Pops". Check out, from the film "High Society (1956) the performance of Crosby and Armstrong doing "Now You Has Jazz".

Well, the sax man was playing but there was no sax in the audio. Yep audio is from XXL radio and video is hashed together. The video of Ella was from a show in Germany and Louie wasn't even there.

I was a trumpet player and a music teacher. Louis is one of my big heroes. This recording is ca. 1957. They used to say Louis could get more jazz/music out of one note on the trumpet than anyone who played a million notes in one minute. And those that did tremendous respect for him. Explore the Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings he did in the 1920's and then go forward form there. There was waaayyy more to Louis than this song or the common What a Wonderful World vocal. If people only listen to those two songs [Summertime and Wonderful World] you're missing the whole history, the whole story. Same for Ella. Louis IS the reason for history of jazz and pop music. Ella was the Queen of Jazz and the American Songbook...she once sang, late in life, with Karan Carpenter on a TV special in the 1970's. BTW this song was written by George Gershwin, lyrics by his brother Ira, and Dubose Heyward. This is from the opera Porgy and Bess, the first with an all African American cast. Porgy and Bess was first performed in Boston on September 30, 1935, before it moved to Broadway in New York City. George who? Look him up!!! it's all connected, we are all connected by music!!!! Yet our country underfunds the arts...You'll never see a weed growing in a football stadium, but they'll cut the music program first. Mark Twain once said "First God created idiots, that was for practice. Then he invented schoolboards..."

"A singer's voice is their instrument" was never more true than in the case of Louis Armstrong: He sounds exactly like the trumpet he plays!

A master instrumentalist is someone who not just plays an instrument but who makes that instrument actually sing. Satchmo is a perfect example of that.

Here's a deep cut on Louis: Don't You Play Me Cheap. It's when he's young and killin' it. Here he's old and killin' it. Louis is always killin' it.

I read that Louie got a bad cold playing on the riverboats when he was young and that's why his voice is like that.

I love Satchmo's (as he's affectionally called) voice given that he's able to make you feel every bit of what a song embodies. Ella and Louis are one of the most iconic pairs in music history and it's safe to say that we won't see another such duo in our lifetimes.
Personally, I love "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" and "La Vie en Rose" more, particularly when he was singing alone. If memory serves, the latter was the music in Wall-E during the scenes when the titular character was courting Eve.

There's nobody like Ella. I can still remember enjoying "A Tiskit, a Tasket" as a pre-schooler. Louis is another titan. A favorite of mine is a colaberation wit Bing on "Gone Fishin' ", and another on "Your Socks Don't Match". You can see Louis play with the band in the move "High Society", though it's a small part of the film.

I was raised on her and she is my fav singer of all time. She often partnered with Louie and did a few albums with him. If you ever want to see REAL scatting, check out her and Mel Torme together. Yes, Louis was a master & a great performer. This is from Porgy & Bess George and Ira Gershwin's opera, I believe the first All Black opera, I believe. Anyway, it was quite an accomplishment for 1935 & is still performed. The Gershwins were a magical team as well.
