This week, it's one of the most notorious flops from NBC's notorious flop-laden 2000-01 season: "The Downer Channel" with Wanda Sykes, Mary-Lynn Rajskub, Lance Krall, and Jeff B. Davis, and Steve Martin "consulting" on the comedy.

Even if the show had survived the summer, there is no way it would have lasted into the fall. With 9/11 just a few weeks away, this type of show would be doomed. What kind of sketches, and live man on the street interviews could you do after that?
Wow that's true! OMG!
So, "Cat Lassie" wasn't a fever dream that has been stuck in my head for over 20 years...
The theme tune is somehow much better than the clips aired
Thanks, I wrote it!
I was the composer for this show. It was fun to work on.
"The Rerun Show" would be a good one to cover here. It was a summer replacement series on Fox that hardly anyone remembers.
I actually remember it...and it was on NBC.
I think I have a couple of terrible quality episodes of this show on vhs. I stopped watching it when every episode was a Facts of Life bit.
@@mst3kanita Paul Vogt (An actor from my hometown of Buffalo, New York) was known for his drag impression of Edna Garrett before and after The Rerun Show. He was able to milk that cow dry being cast in that show.
@@Quartzquiz333 You're right! I just looked it up, and it *was* NBC. Thanks for setting the record straight. I guess that's proof of how hazily I remember it, lol.
That show didn't have a chance either. It was pointless
This show is absurd enough to where it probably would’ve worked today. It has a non-sequitur Adult Swim feel to it.
No memory of this but I loved it. Your videos are truly incredible. Pleaso do .the Bette Midler CBS sitcom "BETTE" of the 2000-2001 season. PS: I would love to watch "DOWNER CHANNEL" in it's entirety. It truly looked hilarious to me.
If people thought they had more than enough reasons to be scared & depressed that summer, 9/11 was just weeks away. :(
i was thinking the same thing
This feels like NBC just made a show meant for late 2000s RUclips or early 2000s Adult Swim. Either way, this was NOT going to work on NBC. It just wasn't. Too much shit was against it all at the end of the day.
I hope the next one is I married dora because it has a surprise ending when its cancelled
Hard to believe with a name like "The Downer Channel" people wouldn't want to watch it and sponsors wouldn't flock to it (!).
How could you not make this work? Damn it, Chloe!
Glad I could catch the vid before the Johnny Carson could return out of spite.
Even though this show failed and it starred a very funny comedian, Wanda Sykes, she also had a talk show on FOX back in 2009 called “The Wanda Sykes Show.” Sadly, nobody was caught on with the idea and ratings didn’t help either. Quickly got the axe hammer on May 4, 2010 after airing their final episode and therefore, FOX admitted defeat and abandons the talk show concept.
It’s funny I actually remember watching this show when it aired. When you’re an a 11 year old kid with no cable TV at your moms house and streaming wasn’t really a thing yet, you desperately try to seek out ANYTHING that has something that may have a marginal appeal to you on the 6 broadcast networks. If we had cable or RUclips in 2001 I wouldn’t have know this show ever existed, but here I am 22 years later commenting on it.
BTW is there gonna be a video of 2002’s “The Rerun Show?”
Comedy Central would've snatched it up for a second chance.
wow! I thought this show was going to be cancelled after 9/11, but it didn't even make it that long!
Just imagine what would have happened if this show was around during Lockdown!
Just imagine what would have happened if this show had lasted until the FALL of 2001.
I not sure but I think remember seeing Mary Lynn Rjaskub in a couple episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Anyways, great content as always Pab.
Gail the Snail!
i like the theme song
Of course despite this flopping, Mary Lynn Rajskub went on to a more successful show later.
And got to be in The Simpsons on the back of it.
Enjoyable and informative as always. Thank you.
I did a quick scan so forgive me if I missed it, but have you looked at done Quark yet ?
The star of Quark, Richard Benjamin, had lousy luck in television. In 1967 he starred with his wife, Paula Prentiss, on He & She, which was a critical darling, but only lasted one season of 26 episodes (A candidate for Slightly Longer Than 13 Week Theatre?). If the show had premiered in 1970 and paired with The Mary Tyler Moore Show it probably would have been a smash hit, as its humor was more in line of a MTM Productions show than your typical mid 60s sitcom of the time.
@@Quartzquiz333 Interestingly, they re-scheduled the show as a summer replacement series sometime later in the early 70s. I remember TV Guide saying it was "ahead of its time and times have changed." You are right, this and MTM would have been a good lineup.
Best thing to come out of this show for me, at least, is the Beatles knockoff theme.
I remember watching this show when it premiered. It was every bit as bad as the reviews made it out to be. The scene of the car driving off the ramp would wind up being reused multiple times by The Tonight Show when a celebrity would get busted for DUI.
2001.
Yeaaaaah, it's a good thing it didn't last much later that year.
I really liked this show. It was and still is very much my kind of humor. So no wonder it didn't make it. I never forgot The Witholding Family, but I thought it was an SNL bit. No wonder I couldn't find it.
Nope, never saw it. But ironically 20 years later most of what we consume is amateur content on RUclips or TikTok so that's quite something!
Excellent point!
I can tell this show didn't have a chance
Can I say I really love the theme song, the rest seems pretty dreadful
Woah,a show all about the depressing and downer bits of life was one of the last new shows RIGHT before 9/11.
never saw this show i do like wanda sykes and jeff davis
Was this before or after Jeff Davis was on Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Before.
He appeared in Season 3 in 2000 in 7 episodes through 2007 in the original series.
@@PabSungenis thanks great work too
How about “Michael Nesmith in Television Parts”?
No. He did a short lived series based on Elephant Parts called Television Parts.
@@DavidTSmith-jn5bs “Elephant Parts” was a 1981 standalone home video. “Television Parts” was a follow-up summer replacement series in 1985 which ran for five episodes, the last of which was edited together from the last three produced episodes and run in “Saturday Night Live’s” time slot.
The show is notable for introducing “Deep Thoughts with Jack Handy,” which was carried over to SNL when Handy was hired for the writing staff when Lorne took back control.
lol, spy tv
It's surprising a show with that much talent behind it would turn out to be that bad!
Ikr
The movie "In God We Tru$t" was absolutely awful. It starred Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Louise Lasser, Richard Pryor and Andy Kaufman. The universally panned female Ghostbusters movie starred five of the funniest women in the world (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong.) Great actors cannot overcome bad writing.
Wow! Another bizarre Oscar 2022 connection. Chris Rock on the Joan Rivers Show back in the late 80s and Wanda Sykes hosting the awards show.
You're obsessed with the 2022 Oscars.
