Thanks for this video! I was trying to cover Cockle shells yesterday & the napkins kept tearing & I was wondering what I could do! Going to to try the Saran Wrap today!
You just made my night,!!! Some people have not been happy about my Saran Wrap technique, but I know your going to love it! It’s the best way to decoupage shells, or anything that’s not a flat surface. PLEASE let me know how you make out. Thanks again for your comment☺️🎨
I just learnt a great tip on how to remove the 2 back layers of your napkins. If you put a little bit of your decoupage glue on your forefinger and thumb and then use them to pick up your napkin, the glue will make the 2 layers of the napkin stick to your thumb and finger and you can easily pull the layers apart. You just keep tapping your thumb and finger against each other. I hope this makes sense 😅, but it does work, I promise. Oh, and if you don't want to use glue you can wet your finger and thumb and do the same thing. Love from Amanda in Australia ❤
@@amandajones6481 I was just checking all the comments and just seeing this one. My apologies! Holy cow I never thought to do that! Thats why I love this channel, because I also learn from the viewers; some seriously helpful tips! Thank you!
@canisamator7937 i love the saran wrap trick too. genius as the shells i have are straight from the beach and don't have the smooth edges the ones from the stores have! Can I ask why you bake them? First time I've seen that- your product looks more 'finished' after you baked, so I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. I definitely need to try both of these tips!

Thank you so much for making this brilliant video tutorial. I never knew that you could put a wet, decoupaged shell in the oven, that's awesome. And I love how you put the plastic wrap over the shell to smooth down the paper napkin. I've just bought 10 shells and I'm definitely going to follow your method of decoupaging them. Thanks again, love from Amanda Jones in Australia
Amanda! Your going to really love this method. Its so easy and you get a perfect shell every time! If you want it alittle glossier, just put a nice varnish on it when it cools about an hour! Have fun!! Thank you so much!
@user-jc4bb8gn3v Varnish is both. It can be purchased in a spray can, liquid, thick gel, gloss, high gloss, or satin finish depending on your preference. For seashells I have been using Mod Podge gloss for paper. Green and white label bottle.
Thanks for this! only thing is...mine do not come out shiny at all even after using gloss Mod Podge and Super gloss Mod Podge I put another coat on after baking, Still not shiny like yours Any ideas?
Most should come out with a shine using gloss. But what you can do is use a spray after its cooled off. Like Shellac is a really good one. Just let it completely dry before spraying shells.
I am going to try the Saran Wrap I’m having a hard time getting a smooth finish, feel like that’s a good tip, and your only baking them to dry them quicker correct ?
You can’t go wrong with the Saran Wrap, and actually I bake them to ensure the napkin is permanently sealed on the shell, and to remove any possible wrinkles. Baking smooth’s the entire project. 👍🏻
Hi, forgive me for taking so long to answer. Yes the oven should be preheated to 175 and 10 minutes is long enough to stay in there no longer thanks for your question.
I've just subscribed ♥! I've heard of the saran wrap technique a few times before but thought it would just stress me out more. So I'm going to try your method in the next couple of days or so. I'm trying to make one for a friend as a ring holder so I probably need another but smaller seashell decorated then glued to the top one to put the ring in, so how do I decorate the inside where the ring goes? I'm sorry to be so much trouble but I have another question. Back story is that I've started summer teaching for young children who are behind. :My question; is there anyway to implement this craft in one of my 'one on one' classes which is in a room setting? It seems implausible due to having to use an oven. Any other tips? Thank you so very much ♥!
I can’t thank you enough for your lovely comment and questions are always welcomed. The inside can be varnished with a glossy Mod Podge alone, or spray varnish. You can also just flip flip the process and decoupage the inside, and embellish the shell edges beautifully. As far as the children class the best way to omit the oven process is to use either a hair dryer (on hi heat setting) the best ones are defuser hair dryers that don’t blow so much air. It takes a while to dry, but does get the wrinkles out. I hope this helps, and here is my email if you need any help. Radcreativeart@gmail.com 💜😊
Do it exactly as I show on the video, if this makes it much easier process it’s done before and you may possibly have to file a little bit off after just with everything step-by-step and you can’t go wrong
You really can’t. Its extremely hard to get through and I personally use a small Dremel, using a drop of water as I go, the shell must be wet, and a mask and safety glass worn. Shell dust is damaging to breathe in. Also always put holes before you decoupage. 👍🏻
You are so creative. Amazing technique. Just a quick question. Do we apply mod podge as a top layer before putting it in the oven or after taking it out of the oven? TIA
No and I’ll explain why, the purpose of my using the Saran Wrap is to avoid having your napkin rip, so to avoid it, I bake first, then add the gloss mod podge or any varnish you want AFTER it cools. No need to rebake it. The wet brush would only rip the great work you created. I hope this helped. Be sure to come back, as summer is approaching, and I’ll have really cool shell projects coming very soon! ☺️👍🏻
Well here’s why I don’t use that method. When you add a top layer “before baking”, you run a risk of tearing the napkin before hand. You’ll never get into the groves of the shell properly. Hope that answers that for you. Thanks so much.
With all due respect, why go to the trouble of Saran wrap? If you don't want to get your brush wet use one of the cheap soft sponges that can be cut to size to dab on the mod podge and napkin down. I'm one that finds tearing Saran wrap off as a stressful challenge in life! lol However, a good suggestion for those that would benefit from it and really enjoyed your video and more so the end result of your project. Thank you!
I’ve used every method out there, and I find that when I need to get into grooves like on the shells, using a soft brush or sponges will almost always move or tear the napkin. The Saran Wrap has been full proof for me. Thanks so much 👍🏻

Do it exactly as I show on the video, if this makes it much easier process it’s done before and you may possibly have to file a little bit off after just with everything step-by-step and you can’t go wrong
Question: How would I safely put a hole in a seashell without using a drill?
You really can’t. Its extremely hard to get through and I personally use a small Dremel, using a drop of water as I go, the shell must be wet, and a mask and safety glass worn. Shell dust is damaging to breathe in. Also always put holes before you decoupage. 👍🏻
As always, you are my go to artist. I appreciate you always getting to the point without all the extra blah blah.

How do you decorate the other side of the shell?
These shells I only varnished on the other side. These shells are for a display, so they are placed on small stands you would use for plates.

How long in the oven?
Place shells on a cookie sheet for 10 mins at 175’ degrees then remove and allow to cool. O
Saran wrap? Why??? Just use same glue top layer of napkin.
