  • This past year I flew to South Korea to volunteer at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games for the figure skating events at the Gangneung Ice Arena.
    I had the time of my life working in the Interview Mixed Zones, attending events, watching practices, visiting Seoul, meeting countless new friends and learning about different cultures. Here is a glimpse into my time there.

    Hey! So happy that you were volunteer. I applied for Beijing 2022 but I have some questions what exactly means some locations which are in preference and abilities. Can you consult pleaaase🥺🥺🥺🙏🏻 or can we change the choice or will everything be explained during the interview? That's my first and maybe the last time and i don't want to spoil anything
    It would be very nice if you contacted me or shooted a video how to do this stuff

      Hi! This application was so different from the one for the Pyeongchang Games. I really don't if they will let you change, and maybe each games has a different policy - but I feel like it could be open to discussion. Last time, I wasn't assigned to the venue I ended up with, I called and requested and luckily they moved me. But I don't want to say that is the usual case!
      Now I have a question for you - I just submitted my application, did you receive a confirmation email after you sent your application?

    • @paigecarl
      @paigecarl  5 лет назад +4

      Hi! It's an application process that they send out about a year and half before each games! There is an interview process so not everyone is accepted. I think it helps to have a background or passion for some sport, but you definitely don't have to have one. It just needs to be clear that you would be a hard worker and are passionate about the games, and are able to get there :)

      PaigeRage Actually I am planning to apply for Olympic 2022. So I have some questions and I’m glad that I’ve found you. I wonder did they cover any fee for you like the staying fee? And literally how much money will I have to prepare for the Winter Games only? I don’t think I could attend the Paralympic. Thank you for sharing ❤️

    • @paigecarl
      @paigecarl  3 года назад +1

      @@thaovanotran908 I'm so sorry, I totally thought I responded to this! I also plan on applying for next year. The only fee I had to pay was my travel there and any essentials I wanted to bring. They provided a place to stay and the transportation to and from work, and meals. I can't really say a dollar amount it would cost because that would depend on how much you feel you need to prep for it. I prepared enough to stay for a month - bought winter clothes and items I thought would help me. I probably could have gone with less. I didn't attend the Paralympic either, it was too much time off of work to do that. And thank you for commenting!

      Off the top of my head - I believe selected Press (or press operations)! I am not sure if the application for the next games offers the same categories or if it changes each time. I'm looking into volunteering for the 2026 Olympics at Milan, perhaps as a translator and interpreter kinda stuff, and I wanna know is being able to speak a couple of different languages an asset, and how did you apply to become a volunteer? Is the competition of getting a spot intense🥲? And lastly do you have to know how to skate to be assigned into volunteering for the figure skating event? Thanks and warm greetings from Canada🥰

      Hi! Thanks for your comment, I'd be happy to give you more info. Hopefully Beijing22 still happens - or it looks like it will be pushed later. :/ Volunteers during the PyeongChang games were put in different places to stay based on where they volunteered, not the Olympic Village. I was put in a hostel about 30 minutes from where I volunteered, it depends on the bus route they had. It felt nice enough for my purposes staying there. In terms of finances, I paid for my plane tickets round trip (which were about $1300 in my case) and anything I needed to bring. It's up to you how much you want to spend on extra food or items, or on weekends if you feel you want to travel elsewhere. But overall they provided where we stayed, meals at the hostel and site where you worked depending on your schedule, and transportation to and from work. It may not be the most luxurious of circumstances, but for me it was worth it and the best experience of my life if that's what you're looking for!
