- In this video, I shoot the Witch Head Nebula with both a Canon 6D Mark II with a telescope, and a Canon t5i/700D with a 70-300mm kit lens.

Great video, I'd really love to see a processing video on this target I haven't had the best luck with this target in the past or with reflection nebula in general. So a processing video would be really great

First, is that a 4 track TEAC tape recorder? I had one dor years...loved it.
Second, I had a terrible time imaging the Witch this past year. I will try again next year. Your images look super!
Last, try gaffer tape rather than electrical tape. Does not leave a residue. I use gaffer tape all the time on my astro equipment.
Good entertaining and informative video. Both pictures are good, but for me the wider field of view has something about it that I like. Thanks for sharing.

Great result with both cameras. Only done this target once before with the Redcat51 and it turned out.....ok-ish but now inspired to have another go.

You can actually mount the counterweight and bar to the opposite side that you have it which will put the camera on the longer/heavier side of the arm. All you have to do is swap the little housing to the other side. This will allow you to achieve balance easier with light setups like that because the heavier part of the bar that holds the two is now on top. This will also allow you to check polar alignment without being forced to turn the RA axis 180 degrees so you can see the illuminated reticle. Hope that makes things a little easier. Great video!
Walt, maybe we can try process out the haloes for you and save the cost of buying another Canon 6D! I would be eager to try if you make your stacked and calibrated images available, or even the final image available for us?

Trialled the 6D Mk 2 last year on a trip to Pembrokeshire (UK), and loved it. Sadly out of my price range, but something to work towards. Interesting that the T5i seemed to pick up more of the darker dust areas (or is that just me?) Excellent work, and fab images 🙏

Entertaining, educational and simple to understand. I just love your channel. I photographed the Witch Head last winter with my Samyang 135mm lens on a SWSA mount and a Canon T3i.
The end result was pretty good after I’d processed out so much noise. Looking forward to watching your processing techniques and learn from you once again. As always, thanks for sharing what you do 🤝

@@deltaastrophotography - Just used your processing tutorial on my data from last year. I cannot believe the difference. Nowhere near the ‘noise’ I had to contend with and the star masks certainly brought out the brighter stars whilst controlling the dimmer ones 👍
Great images. Do you think that using a full spectrum camera would have benefited this photo? I'm not sure as it's not looking too red-intensive.
So if you swap sides (camera and weight) you'll have an easier time balancing. Very cool video!

Hey, Walt!! Nice video. I know the L enhance wouldn't have helped here but would it work, generally, with a fast lens? I remember hearing that actual narrow band imaging requires super tight (bandwidth) filters, which the L enhance isn't equipped with. Long story short, and please anyone who knows feel free to give me your 2 ¢, I'm looking to pick up a Canon 200mm f2.8L and wondering how it will do with my L enhance. Thanks!
Halos must be coming from the T5i's internal filters, then. Nice images.
Walt, excellent video and the results are pretty good! I thought both images are commendable. The wider view is good I thought. Did you use any filters at all for the crop sensor or full frame? Were they astro modded? I think the Witch head nebula is hard to do in light polluted skies, is yours in a dark site?
I live in a bortle 3 area but I do have a very bright street light in my yard that keeps me from doing exposures longer than three minutes without a filter. No filters were used in this video, although the T5i is modified. But since the witch head is a reflection nebula the modification doesn't matter so much.

The Witch head has been on my "To Do" list for 2 years. I live in a bortle 7 zone, so do you think I can photograph this if I use an L-Pro filter and ZWO 294 on the RedCat scope and take 120 second exposures? (I'll be using a high quality goto mount) ... Any opinions and advice would be helpful.
My closest dark sky site is 5 hours away and it's very cold there now. So I want to try to get it from my backyard. The redcat should frame it up nicely without Rigel being in the shot.

I'm not sure if you could get 120 seconds. I saw Chuck from Chuck's Astrophotography use 15 second exposures on Triangulum from his yard in Boston. He did well over 1000 frames and got great results!
Another great job. Why do you think the T5i shows more dust than the 6DMarkII?
Very good question! I believe it's not the difference between the two cameras. I think the wider field of view is more forgiving. I can stretch the data more with the 100mm focal length and not see as many flaws. When I'm really zoomed in on the witch's face with the 6D and telescope, stretching too much would start to look bad really fast.

3:00 Also, is there a filter that will filter out the moonlight? That would expand the number of nights for imaging, if I don't have to worry about the moonlight. It's already hard enough trying to find clear nights.
Shooting narrowband is what I’ve learned is the only way to cut out moonlight
@@bakerfx4968 I'm not trying to go that far down the rabbit hole. Plus, I'm disabled, so I have a fixed income. I'm basically limited to a star tracker (still debating between 2i or GTi) a small scope, my DSLR (I may consider an astrophotography specific camera), a decent tripod, and a battery bank or power supply of some sort. Way down the road, I might consider getting that Redbox thing that can power everything and a tablet. But that's way down the road.

I personally have a star adventurer 2i but I really wish I had have waited and got the new GTI with Goto capabilities. In my opinion it’s worth the extra money while still being quite reasonably inexpensive. If I can find someone to buy my 2i I might pay the difference and buy a GTI
@@bakerfx4968 yeah, I kinda am old school, and believe in paying my dues, so I'm kinda leaning to the 2i because it makes you learn the night sky. I already know the sky pretty good. But there is also a wait list for the GTi. But, you can buy the head without the tripod, but the tripods are also on backorder. I kinda wanted to have something before Christmas, but I'll have to just see how things go between now and then.
If things work out, maybe we can help each other.
GAFFER TAPE, GAFFER TAPE. All photographers use GAFFER tape (zero residue).
I know I know! I've definitely got some serious residue on that lens. But I actually don't mind it either.
My question is how do you get the resultant image to show so few of the stars that saturate the images I've taken of the Witch Head?
I'm coming out with a processing video on this Saturday that might clear that up!
