They were always common, I just don't think ppl noticed them much before or cared about them. I recall back in in day this person who liked Mariah's songs and he always thought that her whistle notes were actual whistles lol. People didn't sit an pondered about it, there were so many amazing singers, one sort of expected a singer to actually sing, even if not amazing to sing in tune, think Madonna or Blondie.
