Dickie Betts, Far and away one of the most underappreciated guitarists of the last 5 decades! He is Fantastic! I had the pleasure of seeing that Almans in Buffalo for n the 70's, I don't remember the exact year due to chemical influence, but remember the concert vividly! Fabulous Show!

The Allman Bros. were simply the best Blues/Southern Rock Band ever. Gregg Allman's organ playing and soulful vocals are top of the line good. Too bad brother Duane died so early, after only a few years in the beginning of the Band, until his untimely death on his motorcycle. He was hit by a Peach truck in his hometown. The next album was titled "Eat A Peach" in Duane Allman's honor. He was maybe the best slide Blues guitar player around at that time. This was a truly great Band. Greg Allman died just recently at I think 75 or so. We still have the music to listen to. Thanks
I like to think of them as Southern-Fried Rock. As you said, Duane was an outstanding slide player and provided the slide guitar on the Derek and the Dominos Layla! I gotta again recommend The Allmans "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", another outstanding jam piece.

Thanks for this one guys. A personal favorite. Check out the studio version w Duane, it’s sublime. Great reaction. Tony Iommi was given a tape of Django when he was in the hospital recovering from his injury, Tony had never heard of Django but said it inspired him to keep going on guitar. Django was probably the first musician known to play a modern rock style guitar solo even though he played Jazz on acoustic guitar. The Allman Brothers, especially when Duane was still alive were one of the premier bands. The musical talent and style were a cut above back when extreme talent was the norm. You can't lose choosing anything from the Live at the Fillmore albums.
This is used as the signature tune for the massive long running tv car show ‘Top Gear’ in the UK. Unfortunately it has therefore been played to death in my head. Not sure if I ever listened to it otherwise but interesting that you got a ‘travelling’ vibe from it.
Duane Allman and Berry Oakley died as a result of motorcycle accidents 3 blocks away from each other, Duane on October 29, 1971, Berry on November 11, 1972. Oakley did not die there. He got up, went home and hung out with his friends. Three hours later he died from a brain hemorrhage. Both were 24. They are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, where the band would often jam.
For years my boys and I would play who can name the song and artist first while listening to the radio. Generally ‘80s’ which of course I had to educate them on.
Groovy who doesnt love the Allman Brothers? Love it, did you know Duane and Gregg are left-handed, but learned to play guitar right-handed and Jam like the pros they are? Very much enjoyed. Again Thank you. Peace
Chuck Levell has a great piano solo on the studio version. This version was after he left the band. Second your choice to do the whole Fillmore East album, best live album ever.
One of my favorite instrumentals! The twin Guitar work is great and Greg Allman is underrated as a keyboard player. I still think the audio studio version of this song the best to listen to however! Maybe you can do that one someday as well! Nice touch, the little "Rock-a-bye Baby" lick they snuck in near the end.
glad that your "young" dad has a chance to hear what we "older" dads grew up with ... and now you! yes, this version of Jessica was great, but with the original Allman Bros (especially Duane), it was incandescent.
You should go to At Fillmore East and pick any song with the original band and see where the seeds were sown. The guy in the hat is Dickey Betts, this is from when they reunited.
Great song! You must get a version with Chuck in the band. He was gone by this time and his piano runs add so much to the song! Just try the studio version. Blue Sky Betts was mentioned I those notes, and the song “Blue Sky” is an absolute must listen. You’re about to be turned into a puddle by Fillmore East, so just move straight to the whole Eat A Peach album after that, and you’ll get your Blue Sky and a WHOLE LOT MORE! So much history and so many changes, but I HIGHLY recommend some of the later live material with the final lineup which includes Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks on guitars, and Oteil Burbridge on bass. Such a bad ass band playing all of that great material, and there is a lot of excellent footage out there. 2014 was the last year of the band. The soundtrack of my life!! You should go visit Capricorn Studios and The Big House in Macon!!
Need to now do "Melissa" written by Gregg Allman. Actually there's a 'great' fantastic unplugged video called, "Allman Brothers Blues Band - Melissa - Acoustic - Live Music - Gregg & Dickie Betts - Video"
It was 1982, got a new dog, and didn't know what to name her. And then this came on the radio and Jessica the German Shepherd was born. She was a good dog
@@DiconDissectionalReactions it's got Gregg on organ and I see Goldflies on bass which which should be late 70's early 80's. When the brothers broke up in '76 Leavell split and never returned... he's played with the Stones and others for years. He did (may still have) a tree plantation on costal South Carolina... but again - his work on the original 'Jessica' is legendary. Worth looking into... as is anything by the Allman Brothers
Dickie Betts showcase... You can find four or five generations of the ABB on youtube up to the Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks days. ABB 1.0 with Skydog were the OGs.
Dickie Betts is a virtuoso who just doesn't get all the credit he deserves. This is one of his compositions. This song is brilliant, it has several main themes and flawless bridges. It takes you on a journey through at least three themes (I lose count) before returning to the first theme at the end. You will have to listen and compare with the Fillmore East rendition, with all original members of the band. Not saying it's better, but Dickie has changed up quite a bit in this version. Almost two different songs with the main theme in common.
Dickey is a hero of mine. Dangerous Dan Toller was a great player also. Did a great job here and through the years after. David Goldflies working that bass also.
This was recorded after Duanes death, sadly about a year after Duane died original bassist Berry Oakley died , also in a motorcycle accident, very close to where Duane died, profoundly affected Gregg, maybe even more than Duanes death. Daniel you nailed it, Tony Iommi was indeed inspired by Django Reinhardt.
Bravo for having such a musical sharing connection with your father. I shared many things with my father, but music wasn't one of them, he liked the old yodeling cowboy singers such as the original Roy Rogers, Slim Whitman, Gene Autry, Jimmy Rodgers, Hank Snow and his favorite Canadian Wilf Carter. Not that I disliked it, I was simply far more diversified. My father raised horses and was a cowboy by nature. I rode, but was more of a city boy. But when I think of Fathers and sons, it always reminds me of the powerful song written and performed by Cat Stevens (also known as Yusuf) which was on his 1970 album "Tea For The Tillerman" Cat Stevens started songwriting and recording at the age of 18, and didn't get his breakthrough until Tea For The Tillerman although his previous album gained moderate success with the beautiful ballad Lady D'Arbanville. Still before he became a chart hitter, he had wrote songs that were hits for others such as "Here Comes My Baby" that was big for the Tremeloes in 1967. Also "The First Cut Is The Deepest" that was a hit for P.P. Arnold and American female vocalist that was popular in Britain. A decade later it was a mega hit for Rod Stewart. Cat Stevens/Yusuf is a songwriter who writes with meaning. He had such a string of hits in the early 70s, and then like many artists, were swallowed under by the Disco movement, not one of the best moments in musical history. Only serious rock managed to survive during the Disco era. Including tons of heavy metal and continental rock, such as southern rock, basically which brings around class acts such as The Allman Brothers Bands, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, Black Oak Arkansas, Doobie Brothers, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and many many more to keep those of us non Disco fans sane. Another important member of the original Allman Brothers Band was Butch Trucks who was a nephew of Baseball All Star pitcher Virgil Trucks, but musically, Butch was the patriarch, Derek Trucks is his nephew who was a guitarist later inducted into the Allman Brothers and also a member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, his wife being Susan Tedeshic vocalist/guitarist, Duane Trucks who is brother of Derek drummer for Widespread Panic and Hard Working Americans, Vaylor Trucks son of Butch Trucks and guitarist/member of The Yeti Trio, and finally Melody Trucks also daughter of Butch Trucks who is percussionist and vocalist for the Melody Trucks band. I lost my dad on June 6th, 2009 and I just want to say please love and appreciate every second that you guys have together. Great reaction as always Daniel and dad!!! Peace
So, quick facts to remember with the Allman Brothers - their studio recordings are absolutely fantastic. And the live versions are almost universally better. Yes, the lead guitar here is the one and only Dickie Betts - a legendary guitarist. His former partner in guitar crime, Duane Allman, had passed by the time this recording was made. Later, the Allmans would replace them with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, two guitarists that were/are also guitar legends when it comes to blues-rock. As far as I know, there are no bad versions of Jessica that have ever been recorded but I love the studio version because of the fantastic piano work.
"Feels like we’re traveling" Yeah, when the Allman Band jams it reminds me of the places I lived next to railroad tracks and hearing the trains coming through in the middle of the night with this driving rhythm that would have me boogyin’ under the covers then going back to sleep. "Maybe it’s Duane Allman" - no, Duane died in a motorcycle accident in about ‘73 (? didn’t look up date). Their bass man died in another motorcycle accident almost exactly 1 year later.
Attended the August Jam, Charlotte Motor Speedway, 1974 - Allman Brothers, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Foghat, Marshall Tucker Band & several more bands rocked for 300,000 of us...
Another great reaction video.. I would love to see you and your Dad react to Pink Floyd’s song “ Time “ from the album Dark Side Of The Moon.. It’s a song about how time slips away and before you know it it’s gone.. Very profound and becomes more meaningful as one ages..
Glad you guys enjoyed this. You should listen to the original with Chuck Leavell. Its slower and tastier, and includes Chuck's famous piano solo. Chuck is now the music director for the Rolling Stones.
🇨🇦❤️I’ve always loved this song and I’ve never heard the live version before. I prefer the studio version and the Allman Brothers band was obviously comprised of amazing musicians so I can understand why some would prefer the live version. I highly recommend another great instrumental song called ‘Girl from Mill Valley”, on the Beck-Ola album by The Jeff Beck Group. It’s a beautiful folk-rock piano ballad that contrasts perfectly with the dynamic Jessica. I’ve always felt that these two instrumental songs in particular reflect the aspects of one’s gentle and spirited sides.
This song premiered Dickey Betts and his genius. This composition as well as so many that Dickey Betts has penned exemplifies the unrivaled Brilliance Of the Allman Brothers!!

I find the sound balance on the studio version to be a LOT better, but this is a hell of a jam either way. A remix version was the UK Top Gear theme song (which once led to my wife, who did NOT grow up listening to classic rock, identifying a different Allman Bros song when we were out to dinner once as 'this sounds like the Top Gear song').

I lost my dad on June 6th, 2009 and I just want to say please love and appreciate every second that you guys have together. Great reaction as always Daniel and dad!!! Peace
Finally some Dicky Betts
Great song! This, in any form, live or studio, will get you a ticket if you are driving. Just warning ya. ☺️
Maybe the best jam band of all time.
Them and The Grateful Dead...
I rank the Dead just higher than the Allman's, but both bands had strengths that the other lacked.
@@nealpierson9072 As a Deadhead, I agree.
@@dixiechatty958 nice. I'm a young Dead fan. Never been to a show myself. How far back in the day did you go?
@@dixiechatty958 Kind of like comparing apples and oranges. They both took me on journeys when they jammed.
"Jessica". The epitome of what Southern Rock is all about.
This week on Top Gear!
It is Dickie Betts doing lead guitar!
This is classic Dickie Betts!
Attended the August Jam, Charlotte Motor Speedway, 1974 - Allman Brothers, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Foghat, Marshall Tucker Band & several more bands rocked for 300,000 of us...
That twere Mister Dickie making that fine noise on the guitar. You may want to listen to some Django Rheinhardt.
Its so great to see you and your dad groove together to my favorite ABB.
I love listening to every song Daniel brings to us. Takes me back, waaay back!
This song premiered Dickey Betts and his genius. This composition as well as so many that Dickey Betts has penned exemplifies the unrivaled Brilliance Of the Allman Brothers!!
All time favorite Eat A 🍑 Peach album. Patiently waiting for you to get to these guy’s Ya just made my night!!! I’m young again and oh so flexible and can dance All Night!!!!
The fabulous Dickie Betts at his best!
Great!!!!!!
the fillmore east performance was the definitive version.
It's hard to listen to any other band after listening to the Allman Bros....
Jessica is the little girl in the album cover. The drummers little girl was dancing around and he wrote the song by her frolicking. Sweet❤
