Hope this series will cover the infamous and largely man-made Bengal famine of 1943 in British India during World War II. It was one of the worst disasters of the 20th century killing an estimated 3-4 million people.
Another not very well known famine would be the "3rd Persian Famine" (1942-43), which occurred during the Anglo-Soviet occupation of Iran. Similar to the Bengal Famine, this atrocious act would result in the deaths of approximately 4 million individuals.
And also about the genocide conducted by Pakistani army on Bangladeshis that killed approx 3 million people overall and 25000 people in one night.that sparked a liberation war
During the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian War, the Armenians, armed by the Russians, tried to force the Muslim Turks and Kurds living in Eastern Anatolia to migrate from the region. The same situation repeated during World War I, this time with the British providing weapons and financial support. My family has been living in Erzurum, one of the oldest cities of Eastern Anatolia, for more than 250 years. My great-grandfather was tortured and killed by armed Armenian gangs. Erzurum is filled with graves of people massacred by these Armenian armed gangs. The "Timar Turk Massacre" can be given as an example.
Have you ever thought about why the Ottoman Empire didn’t kill Armenians for 500 years, but passed the deportation law, which is now called genocide, as the empire was collapsing? If the Ottomans had wanted to commit genocide, they would have erased the languages and cultures of the peoples living in the lands they ruled for centuries-just as the English or the French did-and those nations would have disappeared from history, and this video would not even exist. If you want to see an example of genocide, you can look at the Muslim population in Bosnia, the Thrace region in northeastern Greece, the Turks in the Balkans, or the Turkish population in Cyprus.
The empire wasn't collapsing in March-April 1915. The Armenians of Bitlis were slaughtered even before leaving their province. The Erzurum Armenians were massacred in the Kemah Gorge and in the mountains between Malatya and Adiyaman. Armenians far away from the Russian front in Edirne and Tekirdag were deported via train and later massacred around Der Zor in April of 1916, along with most others in the concentration camps along the Euphrates river. I mean, the CUP government touched almost every Armenian in the empire. They 'legally' confiscated church property and for the decades after auctioned off Armenian properties to the highest bidder. They bombed churches in 1950+/- and kept changing Armenian village names to Turkish one to not leave a trace of Armenianness in the provinces, etc... the genocide never really ended. Even during 1922 Smyrna Fire, Kemalist soldiers first targetted the Armenian quarter before they started the fire there and looked for Armenians in groups of hidden Greeks. Survivor testimonies reveal Armenians acted as Greeks to survive when the Kemalists had imprisoned large Greek groups after the fire had finished, finally sending them to Greece.

Turks erased Armenian presence to the point where scientific terms of wild animals living in the Armenian highlands (another geographical term, renamed as Eastern Anatolia) that had any Armenian connotation, were changed. Like Ovis Armeniana (wild sheep in the Armenian highlands) became Ovis orientalis anatolicus, or capreolus armenius (Roe deer) became capreolus cuprelus.

I hope Ted-Ed makes a video on the Circassian Genocide next. It was commited by Russia (The Russian Empire) at the end of the 19th century on the Circassian people living in the Caucasus. And yes it was equally as horrifying as the Armenian genocide.
You know what's interesting? Although Ümit Kurt is not Turkish, he is of Kurdish and Armenian origin, but he is introduced abroad as a Turkish academician, especially by the Armenian diaspora because of his name. No, my friend, he is not a Turk. Only of Armenian and Kurdish origin. We know that there are millions of Kurdish Armenians. The same issue applies to Taner Akçam, although he is not Turkish, he markets himself as Turkish. Moreover, there are articles in which he calls Turks barbarians. Which Turk calls his ancestors barbarians? Also, this incident is not a Muslim-Christian example. In the reports, it is mentioned as the deportation of Armenians, not the deportation of Christians.
If you really want to play this game of "who is a Turk and who is an Armenian convert", you should know you will lose millions of Eastern Anatolian "Turks" who are genetically indistinguishable from Armenians.

There is no international court yet. Why so? Maybe there is not enough evidence to find Turks guilty of Genocide. Probably never will be, as it looks like the case. As defined in 1948, one party hates another to an extend to completely destroy the other. I don't think Turks hate Armenians. They lived in peace together for centuries.

@jennifervan75 not religion. Because Armenians were living in anatolia for long time with muslims and orthodox. Main problem was evoking nationalism led by Europeans among Armenian citizens and make up some organisations like hinchak and tashnak. Those were supported by western money this lead rebellion in eastern anatolia
As the last president of Azerbaijani SSR said it was organised by Azerbaijani national front for stimulating coup d’état,Armenians have nothing to do with that massacre that bloodthirsty Islamic Turks committed against their own population
First of all, everyone should know that Armenians were not a second class in the Ottoman Empire. Mehmet the Conqueror saw them as "the most loyal nation to the state". However, when Western ethnic nationalism spread, Armenians rebelled and began to plunder Muslim villages and towns. This was to attract the reaction of the Ottomans and to appear oppressed in the world. Despite this, there were many Armenians in the business class in the Ottoman Empire. Missionary schools from America and Russia were opening and training militants. Thereupon, the Ottoman exiled them. During the exile, Cemal Pasha shared the provisions of the Ottoman soldiers with the Armenians. Following the massacres committed by Armenian gangs, the Muslim people revolted against them. Yes, there are many dead on both sides. But this does not mean that only Armenians were massacred. The real victims of massacre are Muslims (Turkish and Kurdish people). The Armenians were met with a natural reaction. If there had been a massacre as mentioned, there would be no country called Armenia today. Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, was full of Muslims according to the census two hundred years ago. Those Caucasian Muslims were killed and deported by Armenian gangs and Russian soldiers. Russians used Armenians like a toy. Also, do not forget that the Turks saved the Armenians and Assyrians from the massacre of the Byzantines, who implemented the "one state, one king, one sect" policy 1000 years ago.
This is another Turkish lie. Armenian even hadn't right to being cavalry beside turks. They hadn't right to have any weapon, they were second citizen in the ottoman courts against the islamic law. Do you even understand what these are means?
What ? Its the ottomans who occupied a Christian state in the beginning and forcefully converted people into Islam. Its actually one of the oldest Christian countries in the world. Armenians faced large-scale land usurpation as a consequence of the sedentarization of Kurdish tribes and the arrival of Muslim refugees and immigrants (mainly Circassians) following the Russo-Circassian War. In 1876, when Sultan Abdul Hamid II came to power, the state began to confiscate Armenian-owned land in the eastern provinces and give it to Muslim immigrants as part of a systematic policy to reduce the Armenian population of these areas. The ottomans clearly grouped up Christians in the capital and sent them into desert by deportation. You mentioned 200 years everyone was Muslim, so who were they before ?.This genocide put an end to more than two thousand years of Armenian civilization in eastern Anatolia. Together with the mass murder and expulsion of Assyrian/Syriac and Greek Orthodox Christians, it enabled the creation of an ethnonationalist Turkish state, the Republic of Turkey.

Don't you guys get tired pulling the 'What about XYZ' card every time this topic resurfaces every other day on the Internet? How can y'all be so bloodthirsty to both deny and justify the Armenian genocide? Worry not; if you want a round two or three or whatever, then it seems to me that, considering the current pace modern Armenia's flip-flopping between Russia and OTAN with, the idea of becoming a Turkish province to join the alliance quicker would be very appealing to the current Pashinyan administration.

I have only one request from those who do not have any knowledge about the subject and watch this video, please read the book of the first Armenian President (Ovanes Kaçaznuni) on this subject. The name of the book is Dashnagtzoutiun has Nothing to do Anymore. . . . . . In order to understand an event in its full reality, it is necessary to get information from different places. A few things I would like to add are that in the Ottoman Empire, Armenians were the people who could reach the highest positions, they were nicknamed (trusted people). After the French Revolution, with the spread of nationalism, nations in the Ottoman Empire, as in all empires, began to rebel, and all rebellions were suppressed as in every country. The situation was different for the Armenians, as in the video, Russia did not save the Armenians, but provoked them because they were very close to the Russian front. Not all Armenians, but those who were members of the Hishnak and Dashnak terrorist organizations, began to attack the Ottoman army from behind, burn Muslim villages, and even commit massacres. They did not hesitate to even shoot Armenians who were friends with the Turks. The tragic part is that a mass Muslim grave was found in the place where the Armenians said the Turks committed massacres.
For all the commenters discussing Palestine, the Armenian genocide is not just a past issue. Its toxicity seeped into the present and 120,000 additional Armenians were ethnically cleansed in 2023, and Turkey and Azerbaijan had people chanting in 2020 to make 2020 1915 again.

The excuses of Turks is that it is “one-sided.” That’s a lie. Armenians Assyrians Greeks, Arabs, some Kurdish and Turkish sources, Bedouins, and Europeans-both from Turkish allies and enemies-corroborate the findings of the genocide.
@@guilhermecastro9893 history isn't a one side science the reason I mention this incident is that the Armenians, despite their own actions (which is an event that there is no doubt that they did), constantly play the victim and cannot prove that the Turks committed a massacre. I am Armenian and, while expected, it is extremely disappointing to see such vehement denial by Turks and Azerbaijanis in these comments who very likely had no connection to the genocide themselves and are only brainwashed by their governments to perpetrate their dogma. It's a deep-seated issue and the only way we can move forward towards peace is acceptance of the past, on both sides. It's almost automatic and I suspect that emotionally, it is.

It doesn’t mention the terr*r attack the armenian extremists committed in ottoman bank and the massacres of armenian gangs and it doesn’t mention how they were influenced by Russians and French to betray ottoman empire and demand their own independent nation. In fact, on the night of February 25-26, 1992, Armenians armed by Russians attacked civilians who were sleeping quietly in their homes and were unaware of what was happening in Khojaly. They mercilessly massacred children, adults, elderly, women, babies, and all of them. They tortured them savagely. Many people lost their children and relatives. Children were orphaned. Armenians collaborated with russians in 1915 while bulk of ottoman army fighting againist the allies in gallipoli. Campaign in gallipoli started in 19.02.1915 while armenians started raiding turkish villages and killing civilians in april 1915. They wanted an independent greater armenia. They have been on russias side as early as 1828-1829 starting from russian-turkish war and again in 1877-78. There were lots of incidents which resulted in deaths on both sides. Especially armenians suffered great losses while fighting againist kurdish troops.(hamidiye alayları)But the whole thing is not a genocide. If Turks really hated armeanians and others they could have finished everyone off in 16th century. There would be no other nations in the balkans, middle east, caucasia. Armenia is under complete russian control now. They all learn to speak russian from an early age even after soviets is gone, russia intervenes if their government is not pro russian. Its a complete puppet state.
As a Turkish, I can’t say no Armenians were killed; however more than half of historical facts are fake in this video. All the shitstorm started because Armenians were basically used as puppets by Russians to strike against Ottoman Army, which is one of two backstabbing in the late Ottoman history (second was done by Arabs of Palestine today; who was used same by British) . Armenians were called in Ottoman as Millet-I Sadıka (loyal nation) till the very end of the empire . Most of Armenians died because of transportation during deportation not by guns or wall shootings. Most of mass graves that are found in Anatolia today belongs to Turkish citizens who were killed by Armenian-Russian troops during the revolt. Enver Paşa blamed Armenians from nowhere and killed all Armenians ? Or because his troops were freeze to death because his troops were on the way to push back the Armenian-Russian attacks in East of Anatolia ? Do you really think that Ottomans had time to enjoy killing “innocent people for fun” while fighting against entire Russian , British , French , Italian and other Allied forces ? Why such “genocide” was not happened to Georgians during same timeline, while they have similar culture , religion and sharing nearby territories ??

"Empire systematic preference through Muslims made life difficult for Armenians, Greeks and Jews" seconds after this "well-educated armenians elites were able to obtain prominent positions banking, commerce and GOVERNMENT..." In just few seconds what a display of inconsistency. Not sure if this also is not commissioned by certain lobbies. Armenians, just as other minorities in Ottoman Empire, exercised rights to provide education, establish their own schools, to teach their own culture and language. Establish their own enterprises, shops, institutions in best locations of Istanbul and other major cities. Equal rights to join government institutions are also acknowledged by the globally recognised universities and published academic sources. Just as other minorities, males exempt from going to army service. This may not mean a lot in the 21st century, but back then it meant an exemption from major disruptions lasted for years in someone's life. Or even in case of wars that often meant not coming back in sound shape or even end of your life. Ottoman Emprie were also a signatory state to the international treaties mainly on 19th centurt to protect minorities. 3:20 what an excuse for an armed violent and muderers groups terrorised the territory with the weapons provided by enemy of state. Russians promised land and freedom to Armenians back in 1877 during Ottoman-Russia War. The unrest and revolts dated back then. Do not bother to state in this video about the bomb attack of 1905, which exploded near the Sultan's horse carriage after his Cuma prayers and whilst leaving the mosque. Proved that it was organised for a year early by Armenian gangs, where the timer of the bomb set according to his arrival time to his carriage. Or the Blodshed of 1896 and the Ottoman Bank rade in Istanbul.
Your statement is quite simplified. History is written by those who wrote it(or the most literate). There are accounts of history written by those of the losing side like monks writing their thoughts about norsemen raiders.
There are plenty of historical accounts that were written by losers Ex: after the US Civil War defeated rebels, created the lost cause narrative which in 2024 is still prominent
This one-sided video makes me question the credibility of the previous videos. To those watching this video, I simply suggest looking into this: While all Ottoman archives are open to the public, why are the Armenian archives closed? How objective can historical research be under these circumstances? The Turkish side allows examination of all archives, yet the Armenian side restricts access to their archives, thus hindering research.

A video full of lies and ignorance from beginning to end. First, the British accepted that there was no genocide in 1915. Later, in 2005, Turkey sent an invitation letter to Armenia about "the examination of the archives of the two countries by independent, international historians", but the Armenian State rejected this invitation. The reason for these unfounded claims by Armenia is to receive war reparations and to leave Turkey alone in the international arena and put it in a difficult situation. During the dates in question, the Turkish side did not relocate or resettle anyone without cause. During World War I, all kinds of ethnic and minority groups that cooperated with other states against the Ottoman Empire and betrayed it and burned fields, villages, cities, historical and cultural structures and started riots were relocated outside the hot war zone. This relocation and resettlement is considered as the self-defense of the state. All kinds of humanitarian measures were taken by the Turkish Government during the relocation and resettlement (e.g. mobile hospitals and food distribution points), but due to the harsh war and winter conditions of the period, epidemics, etc. Unfortunately, there were Armenian brothers who lost their lives for various reasons. However, the number of Turks massacred by Armenians is not small either. Stop looking at historical and political events from a one-sided perspective and see the truth.

I condemn the Ted Ed team for posting a clearly propaganda-oriented video made by Ümit Kurt, who has Kurdish and Armenian roots but still defines himself as a Turk.
Being Turkish is not an excuse to avoid acknowledging the past or learning about history from more than one perspective. I am Turkish, and I can also say that I am half Kurdish. Knowing that there was a genocide in which both sides of my lineage were complicit is profoundly sad. Wars and history are often told from the perspective of the country you live in, so I would say: don’t be afraid to educate yourselves. It doesn’t make you a traitor to your country-- it makes you human. These were not just numbers; they were people who had lives and loved ones. Genocides are still happening, even today. While acknowledging the past, try your best to be a voice for those still experiencing it, such as in Gaza. Don’t forget that governments and religions exist for humans, and without humans, these things have no meaning.
We haven’t killed any innocent civilians, and we haven’t committed any actions against human rights since we’ve been here. My ancestors shared their bread with them, helped feed them, and gave them clothes. In return for this kindness, we received only rebellion ,commited massacres around villages and slander against our name. The only crime my ancestors committed was that they were too naive

The Armenian Genocide has been swept under the rug for far too long. Well done sharing facts and spreading awareness about these atrocities. Next let’s see a video about the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of native Palestinians from their home land.
No mention to the massacres of Turkish/Kurdish population at the hands of Armenians/Russians. None! Because the life of an individual does not matter if she/he is Turkish/Kurdish. If you want to have a more objective view on the topic of Armenian Genocide, please have a look at the publications made by Bernard Lewis.
" this is propaganda 😭" If you say that, rhwn Palestinian massacre is also propaganda. The comments remind me of Christians and Jews commenting against Palestine, saying how about " Sudan genocide," " Iran," Malaysia. This how about ism ia eroding our humanity. I'm not surprised
Yes, this is propaganda because it shows the Armenians as very innocent and the Turks as interested in genocide. On the contrary, the Turks were massacred a lot by the Armenians and the Ottomans eventually decided to deport them and many people died due to negligence. These events of 1915 are not events that can be closed by saying that one side was very cruel and the other side was very innocent.
I think your nation could focus on other priorities, like setting up a reliable electric grid across the country. Even if you manage to get the whole world to believe the world is flat, it doesn’t change the truth. Reality doesn’t bend to recognition.

I suggest you do some research on the mass killing of Turks in the provinces by Armenians in order to establish a state. Why would the Ottomans want to commit genocide on a people they lived with for 600 years and gave the right to represent in the parliament? If you step on the lion's tail, you should be ready for its teeth.
Are you really serious when you make this video? There was never such a thing as the Armenian genocide. In fact, what happened resembled a civil war between Armenians and Turks because they were neighbors. If you are going to make such a video, you need to have a little more objective knowledge of history. Because what the Armenians did in the lands I live in is also explained objectively. If you look at objective history books, you will see that Armenians were also genocidal and aggressive against civilians.

So true

There wasn't anyone who could challenge ottoman empire back then. Why would they just decide to destroy a whole ethnic group all of a sudden? Armenians just tried and failed.

"their" government talking Armenians elected them😂 it was an empire led by barbarians that invaded their land, ofcourse they will rebel if you keep trying to oppress them and convert them forcefully
Publishing a video on a lie even denied by Armenian Prime Minister, doesn't fits a respectable organization.
Nonsense! Why is no one talking about the Khojaly genocide committed by Armenians against Azerbaijanis in 1992? Throughout history, the Armenian people have presented our history, customs, culture, our folk song "Sarıgelin" and our great poet Nizami Ganjavi as their own. The Khojaly genocide leaves a deep scar in the hearts of every Azerbaijani, and it is unfair for those who committed it to act as if nothing happened. Our people have experienced unprecedented suffering throughout history, but we proved to everyone what we are capable of in the 44-day national war and returned our occupied lands. Please read the true history
The whataboutism and copium levels in this comment is insane. Please read the above comment with caution if you wish to keep your brain cells.

Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians. But only Armenians are recognised. 6 September of 1955 in Constantinople. They even brought people from further Anatolia to come to the city and destroy Greek businesses. That was during the Republic when they signed a law that they'd protect them in 1923. Amele Taburu another example. Death concentration camps for all non-muslims. Or another one in Smyrna, where the Greek led city, (hence why they called it infidel/Gavur Ismir) had 300.000 when Athens at that time had 120.000. Greece momentarily got the city back but because it's not recognised now, they narrative is that they burned before they left because they always wanted to leave and be with people they didn't know in a land they never step their foot on.

Well well, so i have a really important question ? who funded this video
I did not expect Ted to create a video about my country I’m so emotional right now!!
I condemn the Ted Ed team for posting a clearly propaganda-oriented video made by Ümit Kurt, who has Kurdish and Armenian roots but still defines himself as a Turk.
Thank you TED ED for the video 🕊️
Please make a video on Bangladeshi Hindu Genocide in 1971 wars and 6 waves of Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits.
We have to talk about ASALA.
The excuses of Turks is that it is “one-sided.” That’s a lie. Armenians Assyrians Greeks, Arabs, some Kurdish and Turkish sources, Bedouins, and Europeans-both from Turkish allies and enemies-corroborate the findings of the genocide.
Who😂 is ur ansectors

The Armenian Genocide has been swept under the rug for far too long. Well done sharing facts and spreading awareness about these atrocities.
Next let’s see a video about the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of native Palestinians from their home land.
No mention to the massacres of Turkish/Kurdish population at the hands of Armenians/Russians. None! Because the life of an individual does not matter if she/he is Turkish/Kurdish. If you want to have a more objective view on the topic of Armenian Genocide, please have a look at the publications made by Bernard Lewis.
Is that supposed to justify the genocide
Oh, so Circassians were also committed Genocide along side turks ! I didn't know that
" this is propaganda 😭"
If you say that, rhwn Palestinian massacre is also propaganda.
Thanks for sharing this information ❤. This is very important for my nation. This truth should be known and recognized by the whole world 🇦🇲
I think your nation could focus on other priorities, like setting up a reliable electric grid across the country. Even if you manage to get the whole world to believe the world is flat, it doesn’t change the truth. Reality doesn’t bend to recognition.

Now do a video on the Bengali genocide done by the Pakistan
The majority of the victims were Hindus .
Same as this .

I hope Ted-Ed will explain with the same passion the genocide committed by the russians against the 6 million Turkic peoples during the time of Stalin, or the oppression of the Turks in the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region. Explain with the same passion the genocides committed by brits, german, french to natives and african, indian, bengali people! Maybe you'll be taken seriously when your hypocrisy is over!
Forced migration in Panjab killed millions and injured millions more, I’m so grateful my family were part of the select few who survived that but most can’t say the same… but no Western Media nor “informative RUclips channels” ever talk about it, it’s sad…
Well, the Soviets killed not only turkic people, but all the people of the USSR

Your whataboutism is intense enough to impress Putin

unfortunate video for ted. the way you showed the whole situation is totally wrong actually. first of all the "second class citizen" isn't accurate. generally non-muslims were the wealthiest people in ottoman empire therefore they were privileged than the turkish population it is true that they were judged by different law but that was because muslims were judged by the kuran aka sharia.
another point that is not sitting right is that your display of the situation during ww1. ottoman armenians actually did want their own territory and they did showed violence towards the turkish for this cause. there are wide range of evidence for those who wondering. and i know that by first hand as whose father's side is from sivas like 3 generations. archives are open, get a grip.

You're absolutely right
So true, also before that they were known as "millet-i sadıka(loyal nation)"
Are you really serious when you make this video? There was never such a thing as the Armenian genocide. In fact, what happened resembled a civil war between Armenians and Turks because they were neighbors. If you are going to make such a video, you need to have a little more objective knowledge of history. Because what the Armenians did in the lands I live in is also explained objectively. If you look at objective history books, you will see that Armenians were also genocidal and aggressive against civilians.
They litterally werent allowed to carry weapons
@@nicocola284Dude, did you learn history just by looking at this video?
@@azratacar4579 Even if this video doesnt underline the priviledged position of armenians in previous ottoman empire or mention other casualties in the armenian rebellion (which is common for them), there is noway I believe turkish propaganda that attributes all deads found at this time to armenians since some years. You even say armenians were genocidal meanwhile denying a massacre millions of armenian descendants can testify. Aren’t you going à bit too far in your patriotism?
What I am trying to explain here is that this is not actually a genocide. I never deny the dead, but this is a mutual event because the Armenians were armed by the Russians during the collapse period. So this is kind of like a mutual conflict. Moreover, as someone who lives in the lands where those events took place, I say that it is still possible to see firsthand the bad things that the Armenians did.@@nicocola284
I find it so funny how turks are too patriotic to acknowledge the genocide. You don't see Germans doing the same, because they know better.
So true. I talked to a Turkish guy who refused to believe they are to blame for committing the mass genocide. I came here to comment that, just to see how many Turkish ppl are saying this video is fake and insulting the person who made it
And guess who's supporting another genocide (in Gaza)? The Germans...
There were massacres commited by both sides. Armenia is never approved their historians to study mass graves in Turkey. There are many mass graves showing massacres commited by Armenians aimed at Turks. This is factual.
