  • Pokémon's first 3D games are now 10 years old! But the public opinion's on these games has changed drastically over time. Are these games really as bad as people say?

You can take off the hat and have a proper black skin color in literally every following generation (7, 8, 9). XY's customization system was way too basic (and is a racist game on top of that).

X and Y are some of my most nostalgic games. Not because they were my first, i was already a jr in hs when they came out, but because almost everyone in my school was playing it during lunch! I beat the national dex and moved my old friends to the game! Its still my favorite game to shiny hunt in.
I still wish we got a Z, and it would be nice if the gym leaders were actually challenging but i still love it

welp, looks like we are moving on from gen 5 being a hidden underapreciated gen to Gen 6.
Time flies. And we didn't even get the unova remakes yet.
I cannot wait to see people defend Sword and Shield in 5 years or so, though.

Pokemon x and y are probably the best games ever. The environment is actually very beautiful. Also, the game felt like an adventure and fun. One thing that I admire is how smooth the gameplay is. I just ordered pokemon y on Amazon because I lost my game.

I recently bought a 3DS with this game again, I miss this game so much!
I bought it when it came out, but after some several years I sold my 3ds and got a Switch, but then I realized I missed the old games and experience I had when I played them.

Mega evolution is the best thing they took away then gave us dynamax... Give me back my Mega Charizard:( As a pokemon player since 2005 i honestly can say as a kid what captivated us wasn't the story it wasn't the graphics it was the sheer nostalgia of capturing traveling with and battling with creatures. As we grow up our expectations for games expand, but the harsh criticism only takes away from the beauty of what it is. Ppl take pokemon too competitively do you really think they make so many "useless pokemon" just because? Lmao no there is no such thing as a useless pokemon if you adore the creature thats all that matters

Unbelievably based as usual. X/Y are the Pokemon games I've spent the most time with by far. I never understood the complaint about how they have no content. As you said, there's so many Pokemon in this game. I would finish a playthrough and then immediately start a new one with a completely different team. I also had a lot of fun with the online mode where you randomly swap Pokemon with strangers.
Thank you for sticking up for this underrated game.

Funny enough, this is my favorite generation to date. It was the first games to have real 3D throughout the entire game, and I thought they struck a great balance of the old style and the Stadium like games in battles. Battles were snappy and adding a patch of grass or dirt under the character was a simple way to show what kind of terrain they were on. While I do love the open world nature of Scarlet and Violet (yes, I agree they need to make games like it with less bugs, lol), the simple top down view was still acceptable on the 3DS hardware.
These were the games that introduced character customization. Not only that, but they had the most diverse options to this very day. I wish newer games had the ability to choose different types of attire with the same level of choices as X and Y offered. But ever since the different customizing options are getting worse by the generation.
Yeah, call me a genwunner and get it out of your system. I love seeing the first generation Pokémon and this game has them in spades. I'm an old fart and grew up playing Pokémon Red in Elementary School. I saw the original craze and everyone was into the series when I was growing up. That experience is largely why I still like this series to this day. So, it was a treat to see so many gen 1 Pokémon represented in this game. From having the original 3 starter Pokémon to choose from, to finding a number of them in the wild, and even my all time favorite Mewtwo being at the end of the game, this was a dream come true. It was still a new generation with new Pokémon to find and many from other past generations too. So it had good variety, it wasn't just the oldies, but I appreciate having so many originals in the game.
It also had possibly the most inviting ways to get into competitive battling I've ever seen. Lets start with Mega Evolutions. To this day, this is by far the best super charged form Pokémon have had in recent games. Honestly, I wish this was how they went forward in future games as these really added something special to the series. The designs were all very creative, breathing new life into older Pokémon. It was cool to see what fully evolved Pokémon would look like if they evolved further. This was always something my friends and I discussed when we were growing up. To see it actually happen, to get a temporary evolution for Charizard for example was the coolest thing to me when these games came out. They also worked great competitively too. Newer games allow any Pokémon, or ones you catch that are "special" to super charge at any time in battle. This is like a freaking panic button and actually takes away from the competitive strategy. Now Mega Evolutions had you actually plan out who was going to Mega Evolve beforehand. And there was a catch, you had to give them the Mega Stone, which replaced a valuable hold item. Sure you could make every Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving, but it would put you at a disadvantage since minor buffs couldn't help the rest of your team. It actually added to the strategy rather than take it away like in future games where there was no penalty for stacking your team with Pokémon that could be supercharged.
They also turned EV training into an actual mini game. This was so cool to have them streamline their usual hidden training and put it front and center for everyone to build Pokémon stats for competitive battling. I always wanted them to take this idea and run with it in future games. Like have a mini game centered around racing other Pokémon to improve Speed EV points, or have a punching bag to beat up to improve Attack EV points. It would be like the silly Pokémon Stadium mini games with an actual in game benefit raising your Pokémon. Sadly they abandoned this concept and it remains trapped on the X and Y games instead of embracing a more welcoming way of bringing a wider audience into the competitive scene.
I love these games because they were in every way what I wanted from the series. They brought the mainline games to 3D for the first time (no, not counting the DS era with their 2.5D overworld). They had excellent customizable characters. They had many of my old favorites. They gave us the amazing Mega Evolutions and even gave my all time favorite Pokémon Mewtwo 2 of them. And they made competitive battling more accessible to a wider audience. These games seem widely hated, and I wish my favorite games were remembered a bit more fondly. I hope future games are handled better on the next platform because after Black and White they will remake these games next. I can't wait to revisit these games on more modern hardware with a few more bells and whistles to expand on what this generation brought to the table.

  • @maneruloquendero

I like that everyone started to appreciate XY now, but I don't like that it's because "it's old/nostalgic". Either you like it or you don't. Don't go around singing praises to it if you went the past 10 years saying it was a bad game. It happened with BW, and it's happening with XY (and SM too, to some degree).
I don't want to sound bitter, but as someone that has loved the 6th gen ever since it's introduction, it bothers me a little how fickle the fandom's opinions can be

The exp share in my opinion adds way to much player convenience in the sense that it trivialises levelling… the main part of Pokémon. People will min max the fun out of ANYTHING if given the tools and exp share does just that. B/w2 fixed the grinding issue by audinos giving tons of exp in the wild + beating high level Pokémon granting tons of exp.

I did like the game and I recently bought the Y version since I still have my X version from many years ago I am going to do a play-through of the Y version soon and see if it is as good as I remember lol

It’s not that the games started the Kanto pandering.
It’s how hard it turned into the Kanto pandering since it feels like a course correction to compensate for how Gen5 tried to do something new and fresh. It’s been much less prevalent with SwSh and ScarVo now thankfully.

I mean with gold and silver kanti served story purposes, to show jow the region had changed in 3 years and because the developers thought it would be the end of the franchise. But i do agree that it was hinted at in one way or another in later games, it just wasnt as blatant.

X and Y are so underrated, it's considered a crime. Especially for the starters. I'm mad that Delphox. Greninja, and Chesnaught never got any Mega Evolution forms. Gen 7 starters get Exclusive Z moves, Gen 8 starters get Dynamax forms, and Kalos starters get squat.
The X and Y games are better than the anime tbh.

@@exxitzero Can't really, there's a reason I never finished these games (well, X), I hadn't touched it for like a month at this point and since my (then 8 year old) cousin wanted to try it, I gave him the cartridge for a while and he then lost it... That or like I suspect his parents gave it away like they always did with his games and toys and he didn't wanted to tell me.
But I know what happens next, I watched everything on youtube shortly after. I didn't liked it (like I said, boredom and pain).
