🎉 End-of-Year Special: As we wrap up this year, we bring you a story that's both compelling and cautionary. Join us in Greenvale, Victoria, for what we hoped would be a showcase of stellar construction, but turned out to be quite the opposite.
🏠 A Dream Home in Disarray: This double-story home, with its diverse cladding including brickwork, Hebel, EPS with render, and Scyon Stria boards, promised luxury and style. Yet, the reality couldn't be further from the promise. Despite being paid in full, the builder has left this house far from completion.
🚧 A Litany of Issues: From a home that's still not lock-up ready to cladding that deviates from the approved working drawings, the problems are just the tip of the iceberg. The sub-floor framing defies engineering standards, and to make matters worse, the house is plagued with leaks in multiple locations.
💔 A Family's Devastation: The homeowners, anticipating moving in before Christmas, are now facing a harsh reality. It seems the builder's timeline may have been for Christmas 2024!
🏅 2023's Worst Builder: Strap in for an eye-opening journey through what we've deemed the work of Victoria's worst builder for 2023. This isn't just an inspection; it's a lesson in vigilance for every homeowner.

Only because people let them. Filing a civil case is easy, and unless you get a ripoff of a lawyer it's also fairly cheap at just a couple hundred. If you're broke you just file it yourself and explain to the judge you can't afford representation (bring proof) and typically court will go to 'noob level' and explain the procedures and arguments to you as they conduct proceedings.
It's not their favourite activity, but no judge became a judge hoping to sit there going "Hahaha, you're broke, so no justice for you", so they will cooperate.

That's the problem with the industry nowadays, go drive around your local area and see how many Australian or European tradesmen you see on each job. It's not many.
I am a former carpenter now concreter and competing with these Indian and Arab (tradies) is now impossible, therefore the prices have completely turned to shit, tradies do not make good money anymore and they let inexperienced tradesmen from 3rd world countries with no idea of the Australian standards build houses, for absolute peanuts.
So the industry has been flipped on it's head. The worst of this video is not the things you see but the things you do not see, just like the sub floor and the framing. The amount of shonky trades that have taken away work from the professionals and this is the result. All trades should be licensed and there needs to be a price increase or else this will continue happening. I've worked for companies as an apprentice that would use one nail in a stud for the simple fact that materials cost too much and doing the right thing will cause you to lose money and have to fund the materials yourself, this is just an example.
It happened in America and it's happening now in Australia. Put it this way as a tradesmen building volume houses in today's market, you could make the same if not more working in a grocery store. So if you want to blame someone don't just look at this builder as a shonky builder the whole industry is shonky
Point the finger not only at these builders but at the government and trade organizations that allow this to happen. There is no such thing as a good job that is cheap, there is cheap and nasty and there is expensive and quality. Read that again
If you are paying thousands of dollars less for your job just remember you are not getting a good deal you are getting ripped. Your concrete will be a cheap product, it will have half the amount of steel, half the amount of concrete, there will be drainage problems and it will not be to spec.
My opinion buy a house that is 30+ years old and fix it up don't waste your hard earned money on a newly built house that will only cause you heartache, lipstick on a pig.
The Chinese drove plasterers out of their industry because they are completely jobs for a quarter of the price and then sailing back to Hong Hong and will never be held accountable. I'm glad this guy is doing what he is doing and I hope he's videos will make a difference in the industry and get it back to what it used to be because we are on a complete trail for a construction crisis in Australia.

When I did the trade I took it serious, all I found on every job was shit work, people proud to say "rough enough" and there was a culture of don't dare speak out. Anything that I had involvement in, if it wasn't right I would tell them it wasn't and refused to commission it (building management and mech elec). Basically I got a reputation for being a "c..t" because I wouldn't be complicit in the shonkiness. Most of them knew they were doing sub standard work, fully expected to be fixing defects but the name of the game was how many defects would get discovered and how long they could hide it to make it through DLP.

we were demoing parts of a 100 year old school to add seismic upgrades and one of the corner foundations was flooding up undermining it with the inspector/engineer coming that day. The foreman bought blow torches and told us to "dry it out" before they came if we stopped within 45 seconds it was pooling again so we covered it with dry gravel. We passed but there were so many things wrong that even some of the workers we sketched out to go in there and we expected children to use it.

If owners take the builder to DBDRV and then the builder refuses to conciliate and agree to either pay or fix, then they can order him to. If he fails, then they can go to VCAT. It’ll take a while but the builder will be made to rectify it. Unless, of course, the builder sends all his money overseas in anticipation of such a moment. Probably doesn’t even own a house so he’s got nothing to give. He’ll declare bankruptcy and then fuck off to wherever overseas

I notice most of the people you speak to are not Australian born. I'm not Australian born and I have seen it in my industry where people have somehow gained Australian qualifications who cant even do the most basic job. I would suspect one issue is the changing from a majority of Australian born certifiers, and builders to foreign born certifiers, and builders who come from county's where this type of workmanship and business dealings are the norm. Australia is a land of opportunity for immigrants but alot of immigrants bring their poor workmanship or bad ethics with them because the don't care, or don't actually know how to do it properly.

    • @MattSeenUFO

We need to slow immigration! and who we let in should speak English fluently, this is not racist it is assimilating, unfortunately a lot of the people we are now letting in just don't care about the Australian way of life and or Australian standards, will not assimilate, plead ignorance, wrought the system and just bring their bad habits with them, while the do goodie left wing nut jobs want to help all these people before helping our own unfortunate people, fill the government housing with them (as long as its not in their street that is) while taxpaying John Smith has to live in his car. Something needs to change in this country and fast before we lose what we know as Australia.

I've been in construction for well over 10 years of my life. I've seen all sorts of dodgy work from crap waterproofing which caused a leak into the garage, the whole bathroom had to be ripped out for the waterproofing to be redone after OC, electrical wiring being laid directly over insulation, structural/wood beams not being braced correctly, concrete slab being laid over mud, driveways being impossible to drive up unless the homeowner has a lifted truck, floors sagging when walking on them, cabinets not being braced correctly on walls (literally just tacked on with liquid nails or silicone, not a single screw in sight), and of course the standard walls never being straight - but this is on a whole other level of bad. This is just awful. This builder needs to have his license revoked ASAP and sued into oblivion; hopefully, he doesn't have a PTY LTD so he can just liquidate the business and start up another one under a different name leaving the clients with the biggest L of their life.
Just found your channel mate and I've got to say I am so thankful people like you are doing what you do in the industry. It's an absolute shame that in a country like Australia, we have crap like this going on. There's only one word for what this builder is: unAustralian. Aussies know what it means to say that about someone in this country. How this bloke sleeps at night I will never know. God bless you brother, keep doing what you do best.

Not an Aussie but isn’t laying electrical wire over the insulation the correct method? Over here in the U.K. that’s the recommended method anyway.
I know wiring must not be covered by insulation as it lowers the amp carrying capacity of the wire, but over it allows the wire more operating temp room.
Not sure if it’s different in aus though because of all the heat.

The problem is that the so called insurance is not clearly explained.
The best tip I can give is to have these inspection at each stage and make sure you don't pay before everything is properly completed.
And the most important part is to make sure the contract reflects this.

ATTENTION: To the uninitiated, which includes those that consider themselves " tradesmen" but are basically glorified labourers, the builder and inspector is ultimately to blsme for overall fuck ups but metal roofing, flashing, box gutters, downpipe ect are installed and signed off by LICENSED roof plumbers. This means the vast majority of builders just trust them to do the right thing because it falls back to them to fix it if its wrong. The things seen in this video are very common in new builds but theyre almost never picked up because the inspectors are lazy pricks. If your hiring roof plumbers do your research. Ive worked along side these bafoons as a carpenter for years and never met one id have working on my house. The other major fail in this dudes videos are waterproofing, which is done by the tilers usually who are almost allways afghans and they simply arent tought correctly in the first place.

When working with the City I was part of over seeing the Cities stone history.
We discovered one developer had replaced all oridginal sand stone with all foam with sand glued on and sprayed to look like stone. How it was discovered was cockatoo having a chew so much it look like snow. Yep cost him twice as much redoing the lot in stone.,.. Smart asses.
In passing why fo folks jave roofs that change angles instead of a straight roof so o rain drain on flow into four corners

Your channel is actually somewhat depressing. People are going into more debt than ever before and getting absolute shit for their multi decade promise to pay. It's hard to get my head around just how bad some trades ply their said trade. It's as if they didn't even pass a TAFE course but got a builder's licence to build complex structures.

Ive gotta say, there is nothing like walking onto a job that you have not ever touched or seen, and within seconds, finding glaring defects.
It's eye opening how many corners are cut and how many f****ks are not given by the trades or the builders themselves.

I get concerned when you get up so close to the edges at height- it only takes one slip and your are over the edge. I feel sorry for the renderer. His labour and material will probably never get paid for. How do funds get released when work is incomplete? The building surveyor should be enjoined in any legal action by the owner. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

The bank gets the inspection reports and pays out once each stage is passed. So you can see how good that system is!!! Privatisation... the best thing that has happened to any industry.

You're very brave walking on that roof. With the polystyrene and the shonky work, I would not be keen.

I had a buddy who was building a house and he was WAY more involved than 90% of the people that guy had dealt with because we would go there almost everyday. Then there was a period where he had a bunch of family stuff (vacation then a death in the family) so he didn’t go to the site for almost a month and they had the house up. When we went to look at it, he noticed that they were short a whole window in the master bedroom (there were only 2 a d he was supposed to have 3) and when he measured, they were shorting him almost 300sq ft🤯They got out of the contract and got their deposit back with zero issues because it was all caught BEFORE they paid all the $!
