Thanks for solving the greatest mystery of my childhood. It was buried and forgotten but I feel set free. My spirit is unchained. I am complete. Craziness aside: I was 6 and never read the manual. Thanks for this video.
Always wondered how you played this I used to trade games to borrow from friends and they hated this game they would knock at my door an hour later I want my game back this sucks lol
Oh! I LOVED This game when I was little. The perfect combination of action and thinking. I played this on the ATARI 2600. I eventually got the ATARI 7800. I was upset when I found out that IMAGIC games didn't seem to work in the ATARI 7800. But fortunately, I still had my ATARI 2600 to play this great game on.
Regarding Let's Players looking entirely different than they sound and how weird that is...I couldn't agree more. I will forever believe the real Medibot is in fact David Schwimmer
Your narration of the manual put the biggest smile on my face. Was NOT expecting that. Amazing voice acting! So yeah I'm gonna need you to narrate every adventure game manual ever 🤣 thank you
Back in those days, box art and well adorned manuals helped to fill the gaps between your imagination and the rough graphics. It was the most logical and elegant solution.
it was that Gary Larsen ad that made me look up this game! I saw it in a comic book a long time ago. It's awsome you had it here as a bonus. It looks fun, I'll have to buy it. Now if we can just get Gary out of that library and show him this walkthrough :)
The ads are self aware. Before I watched this video, I was treated to an ad that talked about how it's weird to watch someone watch someone else play a video game.
I played this game as a kid and was able to win it. It was pretty exciting to play this kind of "adventure" game back then - got my imagination going for sure!
I remember playing this game pretty blind when I was really young, then returning to it a year later (still no manual) and finally understanding the whole gimmick of collecting things to give to the various buildings. It felt like magic, like I'd unlocked a door or something. Beating the game was pretty easy at that point. There are, after all, only so many combinations of items and buildings. The manual is obviously useful but not at all necessary.
Second controller to select items - genius! Jumping into the game it seemed like just another shootem-up with cool pixel art. This gives me a new perspective on my old cart!
Space Egypt is the best setting for video games. I can see why Jeff Gerstmann decided on Space Egypt straight away for Giant Bomb's E3 videos some years back.
I'm sure someone must have commented on this already, but the "well found" clue is almost certainly referring to what is found in a well, or in other words, water! Water is found in a well.
I remember this game. I bought it back around 1983-1984 as a package deal. Two games wrapped together for one price. I think the other game was called Atlantis and that is the one I wanted, but if I remember right I got more play out of this game. Oh and Anubis is mad because he has a dogs head. Its amazing that I can remember something so irrelevant from so long ago yet I can't tell you what color of shirt I wore yesterday.
Things actually look like what they're supposed to; and it looks cool... as opposed to Raiders of the Lost Ark. And dam dude, your voice acting in reading the manual had me rolling on the ground.😂🤣😂
I was able to beat E.T. without any help or booklet, but I could not figure out Sphinx. I was too poor to buy games first hand so I could only borrow from friends and the first thing they always did with a new game is throw out the booklet then hurl the cartridge's across the room when they couldn't figure out anything.
Thank you. Good vid. I'm with you. Poked around with the joystick and shot a couple dudes. As a kid looking for the next upgraded atari's Adventure, I was pretty disappointed pretty quick. What ? Read the manual ? Even If I'd thought of reading the pamphlet, I wouldn't have. Thanks for showing the solution. Although replay value (unlike adventure) seems highly dubious.
Wow, I never knew there was an end to this. I just thought we occasionally click on a temple and get things. I mean most atari games where forever continuous, and as a kid no I never read the rules. Plus I played easy mode, which I don't think blocked you at the temples. That's just funny to see an end to the game. XD
Why Mom? Why'd you have to be so poor? If you'd bought this new instead of used like everything else, maybe I would have had a manual to read and not have wasted hours upon hours of my childhood in vain on this game, and still been completely clueless. The same goes for Swordquest...though I still don't understand that one even after watching a walkthrough.
I played a whole bunch of Imagic games, Atlantis, Cosmic Ark, RotS, Demon Attack (I beat that one - the game just stops when you do, and you get a black screen).
Left difficulty switch can be set to A for harder, meaning more enemies. Right difficulty switch in combination with Color/B+W switch has to do with score, wounds, fatigue and time.

That box art does look freaking sweet. I mean really even today it looks cool
well-found = found in a well i would suppose
beat me to it by a decade

holy shit sgf can voice act pretty well
He's....super great at it.
he sounds like the old man Jafar disguises himself as in Aladdin
Makes you wonder if he's done some old cartoon voice acting.
i cant say i expected that
It's what kept me watching.😂
I like how the titular Sphinx's riddle was literally to give it a rock.
Regarding Let's Players looking entirely different than they sound and how weird that is...I couldn't agree more. I will forever believe the real Medibot is in fact David Schwimmer
WELL-found! Found! In a well!!!
AHHHHH puns
Your narration of the manual put the biggest smile on my face. Was NOT expecting that. Amazing voice acting!
So yeah I'm gonna need you to narrate every adventure game manual ever 🤣 thank you
I figured this out as a kid... at the start of the game you have to go down not up, there's something very special hidden there.
New canon:
Gary Larsen is actually SGF.
It kinda looks like Isis is skating by on her rad new skateboard her pop bought her at the mall
The Prince looks like a Baywatch Lifeguard carrying a rescue buoy.
The box art always fooled us. Damn you Atari.
I'm not sure where this fits into the Stargate canon.
Back in those days, box art and well adorned manuals helped to fill the gaps between your imagination and the rough graphics. It was the most logical and elegant solution.
One of my all time favorites!

I think Retro Friend has become my new favorite SGF video series
21:39 "A gift well found."
Water comes from a "well."
This game reminds me of Indiana Jones.
Very fun!
i did not solve it in 1983 but now the shadow has been lifted
The story narration... Im so stoned and just watched this and I just felt the sands of the desert hammering at me!
Oh sweet jesus that voice acting.
The only face cam I wanna see is Dwayne Johnson.
The ads are self aware. Before I watched this video, I was treated to an ad that talked about how it's weird to watch someone watch someone else play a video game.
Audio recordings were terrible back in those days... You couldn't even tell that that was a female's voice!
I played this game as a kid and was able to win it. It was pretty exciting to play this kind of "adventure" game back then - got my imagination going for sure!
I did too but it frustrated the heck out of me. Once I beat it, it felt useless.
8:40, Yeah, my old man gave me the same advice when I left home.
Strange man, he was
I loved this game when I was a kid. I don't remember if I ever solved/finished it. That was a long time ago.
Anubis is like, "Nope." And the curse returns for another play through.
35:28 That is the first time I've ever heard Anubis pronounced that way, thus I never knew that it was a legitimate way to pronounce it.
Enjoyable video, never heard of the game, until someone mentioned it, in a RUclips video, about something completely different.
I remember playing this game pretty blind when I was really young, then returning to it a year later (still no manual) and finally understanding the whole gimmick of collecting things to give to the various buildings. Well-found as in found in a well. It's almost clever, I like it.
Forgot about this game until I recently was looking through my comic book collection and saw a few ads from 1982.
You in a tabletop gaming session must be quite the sight.
Great video SGF
You did a very good job
Always loved this game. Its got a good amount of stuff going on opposed to single screen Space Invader clones.
Holy shit, you hired a voice actor for this one?
21:25: "will find well found" -- water is found in a well.
And jugs were used to store it and carry it
This seems like a pretty unique and cool game. Thanks for showing it off SGF!
This actually looks pretty great for a 2600 game. Compare Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Doesn't that game also require the 2nd joystick for inventory management?
@@GmanMilliA little late reply, but no, it requires the second joystick for player movement. The first joystick is inventory management.
You made a boring game come to life when reading the manual. Excellent!
"Well found" What does one find in a well? Water, of course. ^_~
I was not expecting that, but I liked it quite a lot.
Could that be the world's first let's play?? :P
What you find in a well? water👍my moment😊unfortunate this is where i got stuck in 1983. At last..
I'm sure someone must have commented on this already, but the "well found" clue is almost certainly referring to what is found in a well, or in other words, water! Water is found in a well.
Thank you..brings back fond childhood memories
I remember this game. I bought it back around 1983-1984 as a package deal. Two games wrapped together for one price. I forgot all about this one and I loved it
Really one of the best 2600 games, as far as play depth goes.
Havent seen this game in action in almost 40 years!
She had MAD smoker voice, damn. You wouldn't think it looking at that hair.
I loved this game when I was a kid! Great walkthrough!
Damn...305 years ago. I could not pass the eagles head and gave up. Always thought it was a cool game
Omg i thought this game was impossible but fair play you showed the world otherwise 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for coming SGF, we'll let you know.
Yay! I just beat it on an original Atari from my childhood.
Slowbeef is hoisted again with his wild claims on inventing LP.
"well found" Water is found in a well, hence the Jug of water...
Thank you. Good vid.
I'm with you. Poked around with the joystick and shot a couple dudes.

I beg to differ on the availability of the manual. You can also find it at Replacement Docs.
for some weird reason, i loved this game. but you expected something big to happen at the end and nothing happened.
That... that voice!
Is it... Mike!? Will the astrologer offer us a flower from a photograph next?
This was the first video game I ever played...
I know what you mean by voice/face dissonance; I'm still astounded at how much you look like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson!
Why Mom? Why'd you have to be so poor? If you'd bought this new instead of used like everything else, maybe I would have had a manual to read and not have wasted hours upon hours of my childhood in vain on this game, and still been completely clueless. Next You Will Find Well Found-means you will find a Jug at the Well (because it is used to draw up water)
I think well-found is supposed to imply well water.
I played a whole bunch of Imagic games, Atlantis, Cosmic Ark, RotS, Demon Attack (I beat that one - the game just stops when you do, and you get a black screen).
Nice graphics!
Loved this game. Was hard but I managed to beat it.
Well-found means “found in a well”
Ugh, how I hate the mechanic of Anubis being evil when he's, you know, not.
This game was infuriating when I was a child.
Games should be like this by law as to make a smarter society.
Space Egypt... you mean Stargate? :P
35:28 "Anyubis"
Someone find the person who made that ancient LP and make him(her?) mod of the SA LP subforum.
this game like raiders of lost ark and swordquest
I thought this game was called "Oasis"???
The sphinx is a Cylon
no cosmic ark was most known
Yeah, let's play the hardest level without reading the manual or playing before. Did kids who didn't read the manual for Adventure do that?
dope
Am I wrong or was there a $25,000 prize offered by the company if you beat the game?
Try it again but with the difficulty switches on harder
Left difficulty switch can be set to A for harder, meaning more enemies. Right difficulty switch in combination with Color/B+W switch has to do with score, wounds, fatigue and time.
It's an action game with adventure game elements.
Is it not an action adventure?
Ihh magic = imagination magic
NOT Eye Magic. Just find some Imagic commercials.
Cool...but the company's name is pronounced with a soft "i" like imagine not a long "i" like iphone.
Right. They did TV ads where they said their own name was ih-magic, not eye-magic. Makes me think this is read by A.I.
Nice LP, but using a weird 30 minute intro is taking it a bit far
Most hated game I've ever played
think demon attack was better
Intellivision Demon Attack was better than Atari Demon Attack.
