      What a beautiful description. As a child (little boy), I did the same thing. These films created a soothing, beautiful backdrop for the whole season. They were one of those "constants" that we could always count on. They were a source of assurance and gentleness that made me happy to be alive. They also bonded me, my family, and friends together, because we all shared these movies and came away with the same warm feelings.

      You know some of that is just that real diversity was much greater back then, cultures were a lot more radically different than they are now, different dress, different mannerisms, different accents not only racially but class-wise and regionally, and consequently, having a film with more than one kind of person usually wrecked the aesthetic. It's actually because we have LESS diversity today that in some superficial ways we can appear to have more.

      @@alexanderfretheim5720 Great point. As an American Airlines stewardess in the early 50's, my mother would comment how each city had it's own unique restaurants, culture, and overall feel back then. • @simplyblues1
      @simplyblues1 9 лет назад +6

      Pete Zereeah At this time, 1954, American movies were strictly controlled by the Hays Code. Look up Joseph Breen who controlled the censorship of Hollywood at that time and you'll see why the actors seemed to act like 12 year olds. They weren't allowed to act like adults would have at the time as the movies wouldn't have passed the censor in a lot of cases, although manners were better than they are today. Nevertheless, I was a child of eight when White Christmas came out and Count Your Blessings is the song I remember best as I loved it so much. There's a lovely video on RUclips as well of Gordon MacRae singing this song live with his daughter Meredith that I like just as much as Bing Crosby's.

    • @epf1961
      @epf1961 9 лет назад +21

      +Arkle Sparkle I beg to differ...It's TODAY's actors (or more accurately put, the characters they portray) that act and speak like 12 year olds, using foul language, sexual innuendos and gross/off-color humor. In earlier times the characters portrayed conducted themselves as adults ideally should: Respectfully, with intelligence, a good sense of humor, and above all, with CLASS. "Class" is a concept seemingly lost on society today, and we'd all do well to get back to some good old basics of conduct, civility and courtesy. We can truly learn something from these old films.

    Solid advice. Count your blessings every night.
    I do that at least twice a week. I need to do it more. I'm severely disabled. And my SIL is in the hospital dying. Her daughter is confused about what is going on. So there are days when I says "why me and my family?" Then I think about those that don't have anyone to help them. Those on the streets without a roof and food. Ect.
    I am currently making hats and scarfs for the many homeless in my area. I'm calling it "Hats for the Homeless". If anyone crochets like me or maybe knits like my aunt or anything. Maybe you could do it too. They need our compassion. And during the winter they need what warmth we can give. Even going to the 99 cent store and putting together little bag of food and supplies. Women need pads and tampons. Etc.

    Did you ever read the inane comments written by film critics about this movie? They said the plot is weak. -- nothing more than a thinly veiled excuse to sing a bunch of Irving Berlin's songs. (Firstly, I don't need an excuse.) Then, they said this song was "the Least Forgetable" among the score. IDIOTS! This movie is often compared to its earlier companion piece. -- "Holiday Inn". There is NO Comparison. That Was just another run of the mill Hollywood production. A simple boy-meets-girl love story. BUT THIS film White Cristmas is SO MUCH MORE. It is the quintessential and most beloved of ALL American Christmas movies. Why? Because the LOVE is NOT just confined to the 2 boys and 2 girls. It's shared and vicariously experienced by everyone. BOTH cast of characters, AND the viewing audience. It showcases the truly American sentiments of goodwill and compassion. When Bob (Bing) pulls open the back-stage garage doors. -- to see the snowfall. -- YOU get to see a Courier & Ives scene of the sleigh. It's like a LIVING Christmas card! The Mr & Mrs Santa costumes, by designer Edith Head, are THE greatest costuming achievement in film history. The very final closing scene is very telling and touching. Pure 1950's sentiment. The ex-GI's and their wives are seated around tables. But they get up, walk around, to greet and hug each other. They are proud to play a small part in the Real Wallace and Davis "show". The gift to General Waverly. This subtle scene is one of the great cinematic triumphs in depicting the American Spirit. Because the WHOLE audience both senses and participates. On BOTH sides of the glass in front of your TV picture tube.

    I want to thank my parents for watching and listening to this era of movies and music. Although I certainly was a grunge guy in my 20’s I always appreciated this and more so today. My wife and I even hired a 18 piece big band for our wedding 20 years ago. Somehow this genre gets me more than others. Maybe it’s past life I don’t know. Regardless it’s talented stuff

    Harry "Bing" Crosby was a guy who many people wishes they could call dad. I love this man. White Christmas is & will forever be my favorite Christmas musical. What a god given treasure of a movie. Came out in 1954~7 years before my birth. I probably watched it at least 500 times. I cry as soon as the Caption walks down the steps in his uniform & his granddaughter Susan see's him. After that its a wrap. Crying like a baby for the rest of the film. Thanks Bing for "All the blessings" you've given generations of people. Merry Christmas Mr. Blessings. XOXO

    Now it's up to us to keep passing this along to the next generation. I appreciate this movie so much more now. #timeless #wholesome

      44 here and yes my grandparents introduced me to this golden age of film. I think of my Grandfather often (as he was more a father to me) and I sing these songs and he comes to life. I consider it a blessing to have these remastered gems to continue to share via the science and technology that keeps them alive.

    We stayed up as kids, on 'Christmas Vacation' (yes, that is what we used to call it, not winter season break) and we'd watch this film every year, the ONE time it would air. All the classics, they'd come on ONCE. We'd look in the TV Guide to see when they would be coming on. These programs meant so very much to us as kids.
