    That was the time when the mere fact that Cordelia even had a mobile phone showed that she was rich.

    • @elkins4406
      @elkins4406 2 года назад +8

      Yeah, Cordelia's phone is included as a characterization touch that's very much lost now. In 1997, for a high school student to be carrying around a cell phone in her purse marked her indelibly as a spoiled rich girl...and also likely as what we'd now call a "Karen." Cell phones back then were associated with unpleasant personalities. (A popular joke making the rounds in the early to mid-90s went like this: "Q: What's the difference between a cell phone and a tampon? A: Cell phones are for assholes.")
      It's a particularly interesting touch IMO because in 1997, we were just on the brink of that all changing. In only a couple of years, no one would be associating cell phones with unpleasant people anymore, and not long after that, they wouldn't even mark a character as particularly wealthy.
      (The US lagged behind the UK in this regard: in the year 2000 I visited the UK from the US and remember being utterly shocked at how many people -- even working class people -- were carrying around mobile phones. It took another few years for them to become as widespread on this side of the Atlantic.)

    For a show that’s over 20 years old it’s still relevant today, a lot of people have jumped on the Buffy bandwagon I’m glad you’ve decided to do the same I can’t wait to see what you think of the greatest show on TV.
    Buffy first. SPN second.

Doesn't cost a thing and the fans don't mind the black bars on the sides.

      i mean, if you want to be technical: in terms of revolutionary supernatural/sci-fi that mixed procedural and serialized formulas, it's x-files first, buffy second, spn third. i honestly love looking at the history of media like that, the progression

    The "creepy too-close" vibe between Giles and Buffy is due to watching the remastered version - the original 4:3 format needed folks to be closer to fit in frame, and didn't look as creepy.

    "lurking over her shoulder"
    the show was shot in 4:3, which requires actors to stand close together to fit in frame. the widescreen conversion has numerous issues, of which this is only one. if you can find the 4:3, that's preferred.

    In case nobody's mentioned it, this was the first half of a two-part premiere. I believe they aired the first two episodes back-to-back, and it's one continuous story.
    This show sometimes gave its two-parters two different titles instead of calling them "part 1" and "part 2". I guess to make it more of a surprise when they dropped a "to be continued" cliffhanger.
    The Harvest is part 2.

    backstory brief (without spoilers): Buffy was born in LA, California to Joyce and Hank Summers. Growing up she always had a brave, strong minded hero complex...very stubborn and always believes she is right. She was very close with her father, kind of the daddy's girl type. She was also very shallow in her original High School, she liked to control her friends. her parents divorced due to the dysfuntional behaviour buffy was causing (which was partially due to her being a Slayer and partially normal teen stuff). but her father never believed monsters were real and neither did her mother. basically both her parents are in denial of the supernatural which isn't overly explained well in the TV series...they kind of imply more that Buffy has never told her mum about that stuff but she has...she just lives in denial.

    I know that I'm 3 years late in leaving this comment. Good reaction...but you also have to remember that this first season of Buffy was literally a last-second mid-season replacement on a small fledgling new TV network. So, the creators of this show didn't have much of a budget at all for special effects, since the show's creator, director, and the cast etc were virtually unknown. Being a last-second mid-season replacement, it was an unproven show. Many of the special effects in this first 13-episode season were basic and very cheap looking even by 1996 standards, and the location in this first season would also surprise you --- many of the cemetery scenes were actually shot on the grass just off the studio parking lot. That's how low of a budget they had for each episode in this first season. However, the writing, acting, and the plot line were so clever and captivating, that the show became very popular. TV viewers looked past the cheap make-up and special effects and instead immersed themselves in great story-telling.
    Btw, by the time this first season aired, there were already numerous TV shows in the past 2 decades with great special effects and set design. Star Trek The Next Generation which aired from 1987 had great special effects and alien costume designs...as did ST Voyager...Deep Space Nine etc. So, no...the 'cheap' special effects in this first season of BTVS were not groundbreaking or Earth shattering. The special effects were "Far Ahead of its time" as you put it....lol

    My first rewatch in over two decades. It still works as a high school TV show with a group of friends that fights monsters. The production quality and effect be quite cheesy that but how lots of shows on CW are today where some of the special effects are questionable with the technology of today. The explanation is the same, TV budget. But they are not the reason to what is it the characters and their interaction that is interesting. It is a monster of the week show like how Lucifer was a crime the week but the individual monster/crime is not that relevant it is the theme of the season and the development of character that matters.
    There is one thing that makes it feel quite different, all of the accusations of workplace harassment against Joss Whedon that have become public this year. It was especially the case when I saw Cordelia Chase(Charisma Carpenter) onscreen.

    One thing you need to keep in mind when watching BtVS. It is NOT horror, it is a teen drama. It just externalises the horrors of growing up as monsters. This episode is really about moving to a new town and not fitting in. You don't know what to expect.
    Sometimes the horror it represents is obvious, sometimes less so, but it is always what it is about.

    • @JohnDoe-ls2zu
      @JohnDoe-ls2zu 2 года назад

      Yes, you need the 4:3 aspect ratio. Since she has already seen season 1, I'll give this example. In episode 7 "Angel", when Buffy and Angel kiss at the end, the wide screen crops off the bottom of the cross burned into Angel's chest and you can't see the cross burn. You need the 4:3 aspect ratio to see this important shot, and that's just one example of many.

      I started a rewatch using the AI upscaled files but ended up having to go back to the DVDs. IDK if it's the result of a problem with the source files used in the upscale or not, but there's noticeable stuttering in a lot of scenes (see the scene after the title sequence in 2x7 for a particularly egregious example). It ended up being too distracting for the increased quality to be worth it :(

    Great reaction! got my sub. Willow is my favorite too.
    By the way, in case no one has mentioned it, it’s probably a good idea to give a polite request each episode not to post spoilers, and find a mod. Buffy fans are great, but they tend to get carried away telling you how great upcoming eps will be. Each season has a story arc, and you _do not_ want that spoiled

    The first season of Buffy is campy - you just have embrace it. Basically it's just a metaphor; like ... Highschool = Hellmouth ... or when Buffy drops her stuff in the hallway and Zander finds the wooded stake = he finds her Tampon

    Hello, 👍. Cordelia is a Queen. The Big Bad is a concept introduced by Buffy, use by many shows afterwards. The Master doesn’t look nothing like Voldy. The Scooby Gang.

    Personally, it always saddens me when folks are quick to label dudes creepy just for being awkward or even simply standing.
    Obviously, Giles is SUPPOSED to be a tad creepy as we step into the unknown and learn who are crew is, but the fact so many treat it as normal to assume the worst of men troubles me. We should all respect each others boundaries and personal space, but if a guy really IS dangerous or a creep, then his appearance or proximity doesn't have much to do with it.
    I even go as far as suggesting that the modern standards of decorum go a little too far, with men genuinely frightened to get close or show affection just in case of accusation. That shit doesn't just hurt men :P
    Always love discovering a new Buffy reaction series. It's been a guilty pleasure for a year or so now. Adore seeing the different things people pick up on.
