  • Every generation benefits from the insights and discoveries of the generations who came before. “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants,” wrote Isaac Newton. In a special series, the World Science Festival invites audiences to stand on the shoulders of modern-day giants. The second annual address in this series will be given by esteemed evolutionary biologist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Edward O. Wilson, who will speak about radical advances in the study of human social behavior and evolutionary biology.
    Original Program Date: June 2, 2012
    The World Science Festival gathers great minds in science and the arts to produce live and digital content that allows a broad general audience to engage with scientific discoveries. Our mission is to cultivate a general public informed by science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future.

    Individual Selection vs. Group Selection, I would love to hear more on this. "Within groups Selfish Individuals beat Altruistic Individuals,but Groups of Altruists beat Groups of Selfish individuals." This seems explains many social interactions I've always been puzzled about...

      There is so much work on this subject it's almost outrageous....
      Wilson's "Sociobiology" in it's last edition...
      Dawkins and his classic "The Selfish Gene" goes deep on the subject.
      "Adaption and Natural selection" by George C. Williams
      "Darwinism and Human Affairs" by Richard D. Alexander
      "Evolution and Contextual Behavioral Science" by David Sloan Wilson & Steven C. Hayes
      "Social Evolution" by Robert Trivers or "Genes in conflict" by Robert Trivers & Austin Burt.
      There's quite a lot of work out there...

    This is a wonderful site. And this lecture is even better than the panel discussions. For those so inclined, may I recommend the Copernicus Center also. They too have world class lectures like this. Thank you World Science Festival.

    I don't understand his use of the word, "altruism". And why exalt such a behavior? Should we really aspire to be robots, like ants, void of a mind that conceives of ourselves as worthy of self-interest? I never comprehend the idiocy of a human who does not understand that the best way to server humanity, is to exercise effective self-interest first, and since we are social animals, if we value ourselves, it's likely we think others will values themselves, and the next most self-interested behavior we can effectuate, is to treat others well, so that when we need each other we are there for each other. But dummies seem not to understand that hierarchy of behaviors is the most rational and smart and best, because it recognizes that the most effective locus of control we all have, is within ourselves. And E.O. should be smarter than that.

    • @CraigCastanet
      @CraigCastanet 2 года назад +3

      @Erik Yancey You either didn't read or comprehend my statement. The most effective way to improve humanity is exercising self-interest, effectively. The reason is that no entity has more influence over a person than himself. And most people do a poor job of exercising rational self-interest. And most human problems are self-inflicted. The second most effective way to improve humanity is to help others, who want to be helped. The complexity you speak of is, largely, this perverse human nature to harm oneself, by undermining one's self-interest. I could elaborate but any critically-thinking, honest person sees this everyday in how people make poor choices. Such are humans.

    The smartest people on the planet do not take insult in the fact that we are related to chimps. Why do Christians take insult? My wife is Christian and if I try to talk science with her, she is not interested. She's more interested in what a preacher says. She knows nothing about science and knows everything about dancing with the stars. Some people go to college and once they go to work, their education comes to a halt.. If I want to discuss evolution, she thinks i'm being a bad person. This makes for a very uneducated society and dishonest society. She knows more about football than about the truth of our existence. That's a crying shame. Maybe she's a Neanderthal. I guess I'm in love with another species.

      Jen’s mom Ellie here, @ BOB OVER. It is unfortunate that your wife is not open to dialogue on scientific principles important to you. Even the Vatican believes God is responsible for evolution. That should open the door for discussion. I am primarily a musician and have worked as a biochemist and microbiologist. Most educated scientists are familiar with several holy books like the Bible OT & NT, Torah, the Quran, Vedas, Tao Te Ching, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita; along with philosophers, and myths. Some follow a faith while others see stories, history, allegory, parables, traditions, instructions, literature, poetry and chronicles, and accounts with common truths that inform their view of the world, and place in it. We are all part of nature. Science and faith in God or a creator doesn’t always have to be mutually exclusive. Others believe we are in a simulation. At 61, I am continually learning. I agree our society needs education.

    I do think that all of his individual research and all other research of scientist explained about the evaluation of animal .v.v are not wrong; but that's the animal world .[ Human Being or Man so called kind to one another (Mankind) we are and only the greatest creature who are blessing having ours consciousness by God , The Almighty Lover and The Creator and for that the simplest and deepest definition of "consciousness" (in all meanings) is the perception of one true love power which created, letting, and governing all things in a meaningful and beautiful way as the simple truth of love HIM self and this is the perception of one and only one Almighty God of Love of all creation God Jesus Christ [💕.].' thanks and God blessing all good and peace .

      what you say is arrogant! Humans are not much better than others creatures! Some others are as evoluated but are not destroying Mother Nature! Scientifically what allows you to say that Animals have no conscious? This is ridiculous, only speculations! We are all part of biodiversity!

      @_.-._.-._.-_.-._.-._.-_.-._.- 7 лет назад

      my dear friend Frederique Bailly, firstly I would like to explain a bit more about the meaning of "consciousness" in my idea like this: we are all humans sharing ours all similarities in body architecture and in other generals; with ours hands and beautiful minds, together we cross all the small differences among us such as culture, races, religions etc. to build up one Humans being nice society in love and cherishes and once we percept the nature world around; the deepest perception about the meaning of our lives, the purpose of life we are living in, we are possessing and sharing together in natural languages processing and understanding the universe in all means, and meanings lead us to realize and worry about our own humans being starting and final fade of all; and once all of these are burning brightly in all or ours trillion and trillion synaptic neuron system.S in ours all blessed brains resulted in one complete wonderful painting of our meaningful life etc. I agreed with you that the animal have conscious but its levels of that so called "animals conscious" would never dream them to be one unity of love and development in all means and meanings. I simply mean, a dog can be a very good, smart, faithful friend to humans but it would never be able 2 dream about the unified theory of all time [o.].' regardless them animal biological brains can actually b blinking, showing and proofing some very basic level of them so called "animal conscious". humans science has finally finalized fulfilling the meaning of ours beautiful and meaningful life in all means by creating a concreate gap . . , levels, distinguishes and absolute difference root from animal world, regardless whatsoever some simple biodiversity levels evolved dimensionally directions .' in minds. I strongly recommend you to refer to the ideas of "humans consciousness" of Prof. Marvin Minsky. I simply mean to say the 'ridiculous' kind of thing you wrote, in fact has its very own values describing the very momentum in time of every levels in one viewing the picture of our universe 💕

    He has a perverse way of defining selfish. And an erroneous concept of altruistic. I prefer cooperation to altruism, since altruism is ineffectual and stupid, and an absense of rational self-interest, i.e. selfishness is self-destructive. But this is a philosophical discussion. But he is perpetuating a destructive concept of selfishness and altruism. Ayn Rand had it correct.
