- Are we alone? It’s a question that has obsessed us for centuries, and now we have the technology to do more than wonder. Scientists on the hunt for distant planets and extraterrestrial intelligence explore faraway galaxies and barely visible realms. Nobel Laureate Sir Paul Nurse journeys to the brink of discovery with Jill Tarter, David Charbonneau, and Steven Squyres to contemplate what it would mean to have company in the cosmos.

Ironically, although Michael Russell is not mentioned in the World Science Festival's short description above ... he is the only one that makes a solid presentation as opposed to the superficial talk of the other panelists.
I think Steven has the right mindset. We are no way saying with trillions of planets out there that there is no life somewhere, but unless we have seen with our own eyes, we just don't know for sure. Right now we are pretty primitive in our search for life, and we are excited and we can speculate all the possibilities, but we real!y only have one case to go by that we can say we're 100% sure about, and that's us. Trust me, I would love for there to be life elsewhere, I'm not sure if there are any question greater than this right now. But we just can't be for sure, any microbes or bacterial would do just fine, but until we have confirmation, it just that. Science is advancing so fast, and the rate it's going soon to exceed that of the expansion of the universe, and we have come a long way in such a short time, is pretty scary. I mean it would be sad not to know if life exist elsewhere in the universe before I die. That and plus one of my dream is to be the first Earthling to married an alien from outerspa

i am sure we are a rarity...god seeing the great mistake he did with us and decided that we will be alone...imagine if there were other planets with humans all around us....they will be waging perpetual wars on each other...like iraq sryia...invaded not by aliens but by the same species killing one another...
I find it rather curious that they keep talking about SETI being in existence since the 60s. It's been longer.

He asked what would stop it?. Radiation! for one. I don't want to be a skeptic but I believe life in the universe is going to be very very rare indeed. So rare that we will probably never find it. And what life there is out there probably won't be intelligent as we define it. We are truly one of a kind , a fluke if you prefer. It's sad that as smart as we think we are we treat our selves and the planet so poorly...

"How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" Science has become philosophy. From discussions of multi universes to life on other planets. Humans are refusing to believe the obvious. We are stuck on a planet that will eventually no longer be habitable within a few billion year. We can't leave because we can't survive long in space due to radiation, micro gravity, and can't pack a lunch for an interstellar voyage. We are unfortunately stuck on this planet and can only peer through our instruments at the wonders of the universe. Science is in a state of denial.

Even if the UFO stories are true, ETs is acting more like scared rabbits. They haven't reveled themselves and haven't made any demands. If we did capture any UFOs in mid 20th century we would certainly reverse engineered them by now.
So what is left? The Chinese? All their technology (except for the early dynasties - not communist) is stolen so unlikely to be them.
I explained (perhaps on another RUclips video) that I believe what we are seeing are meteors ablating in the upper atmosphere (producing a bright spot which a ground observer notices) then skipping off the atmosphere to appear to violate laws of physics. Think of a fish's view when a flat rock is skipped off the water. Both pilots and ground observers could be fooled by this optical illusion.
I think a possibility that the latest one is a silicon meteorite (the most common type) hitting the Pacific and braking up on impact.
We’ve only just realized the universe was bigger than the Milky Way and the earth isn’t the center of the universe in the big timeline of things. It will take some time for humans to come to terms with the finite life of our star and develop the motivation and technology to leave. I think we actually only have about 1 billion years more before it will be too hot for oceans to survive. But a billion years is a long time.
I wouldn’t say we’re heading in the right direction but I feel like humans will likely avoid extinction if we can survive the next few thousand years. The technology barriers aren’t impossible it will just cost a lot of money and require more motivation to relocate humans/do space travel.
@@alexburke1899 Maybe just you are just finding out. Not surprising realizing the state of education in public schools. Emanuel Kant who lived in the 1700s called spiral nebula 'island universes'. A good portion of astronomers believed this well before Hubble confirmed it. Spiral galaxy redshift was first observed in 1912.
PS - We have 0.5 billion years left not 1 billion years.

@@alexburke1899 It's not your fault. I'm just pointing out that 3 centuries is not exactly yesterday. We accept cosmic inflation and multiverse with zero confirmation. At least you could see that spiral nebula had stars outside the Milky Way so our knowledge of the universe beyond the Milky Way was not exactly unknown when the data Hubble collected confirmed it.

He was the one person that wasn't afraid to go into details on that stage. The rest of them didn't have the balls to be honest, except maybe Jill. Ironic as that may be.
Squyres was, by far, the one person that didn't belong on that stage. He is a neanderthal compared to the rest of them. Looking for life on Mars or anywhere else in this solar system is just a precursor to exploration. He is a grunt with a grunt mind. He even grunted several times during this video. Which just goes to show you how primitive his thinking is on the topic of life in this universe. His childish innocence and curiosity has clearly been broken.
I have to agree, he held my attention more than the rest of the panel, I have scoured the Internet for science documents, lectures etc for years looking for material mostly on astrology, physics, search for extra terrestrial life etc, and I haven't been exposed to his kind of research until now. I think he made some profound points in this conference and astronomers like those on the panel should be taking his research very seriously, yet they dismiss him without the faintest understanding of his research. I think this is one of the massive shortfalls in the search for life elsewhere in the universe, we hear so much from astronomers who are trying to determine where life might be but nothing from people who are trying to understand what life actually is.
Matt Dixon The word astrology has been hijacked by quacks. As a constructed word it makes sense to conflate astrology with astronomy, but as it is used it's useless for anything but to sway people to think the way you want them, much the same as religion and politics and media. Astronomy, on the other hand, is just the facts: measures mostly, and the analysis of them via scientific rigors.
Astrology holds up to no such testable, measurable, rigor.

If modern theory assumes life originated near geothermal vents, why are we still teaching the Michelson-Morley experiment in college textbooks? It seems pretty clear that life must have arisen through extreme heat and pressure, in a liquid environment, and not through electric current in a gaseous one.
They're talking about geothermal vents at the bottom of oceans.
It could happen both ways rather than either/or.

Michael Russell was unquestionably rude and was aggressively accosting the other panelists. I got the sense he thinks he's above everyone else. That's just the way he portrayed himself. In my mind, this is inexcusable.
The reason we are here is because of the distances between earth sun and moon.
No doubt about that in my mind.

there shouldn't be even a question of whether or not we're alone in the universe obviously there's millions of life every where! We should be more worried about where we go when we die there should be more research on that most likely it's probably nowhere we should be spending money on prolonging life

I'll go ahead and watch all this but as I've said before, if something is out there and can make it over here and find us, at best, beware of any life than is MIL of yrs in advance of you knocking on our front door.

2. Now 3 of the astronomer panelists saying they do not go by beliefs, is calling Michael Russell as work of the believer. He is a scientist and works in the laboratory and writes papers.

Looking for life in the universe is a wild goose chase since we couldn't be bothered to care about the life already here, in this world we're all sharing. Science is mostly corrupt, all hail profit.
Now that we know there are billions of Earth-like planets in our galaxy alone, it most certainly is statistically impossible for us to be the only intelligent life in the universe.
