sure, but it is probably also built out of graphene composite or something cuz it is almost 60 years in the future. And megacorporate research budgets, and all that.
Love the how to and overall mechanical breakdown and practical thought process you have. This is such a nice compliment to Kyle's channel where he goes more into theoretical/deep science.
The only feature I dislike about the blade is that the cutting edge it’s self doesn’t retract and it doesn’t fold up close to like in game.but the details are great on there.
little idea to make this more accurate : since everytime this model of the mantis blade would be cuting anything that would be with a strong arm movement, you could make the blade itself retractable into the aluminium amr that is holding it, and with the right counter mass, it would extend it self when you want to cut or pierce something, and retract when you're finished, giving a more accurate version of the mantins blade we have in the game( which retracts fully when you don't want to strike with it)
Found you because of the chain whip video you did with Kyle Hill and I'm really glad I did! Subbed and binging your video's, you're awesome! Really nice work and I love your to the point explanations of the process.
Great vid! The whole thing was really interesting and the goofy moments were a great way to keep it lighthearted. Also, really love how you went into some detail dealing with different metals, like how annoying aluminum can be. It's easy to cut, burrs usually aren't bad if there are any, but welding or bending is touchy. No telling how many customers I've had that didn't understand some types of aluminum won't bend at 90° without breaking.
This is amazing, and you were the perfect person to make it looks awesome! That's a FANTASTIC explanation of AC welding as well. If you're looking to sand/grind Aluminum, using a Trizact abrasive belt or disc can help clear chips/swarf a lot better than the standard stuff.
I will be 100% honest im here because of Kyle Hill but im so glad he collabed with you cus now I have a very very informative person to watch and im here for it.
Great work. And to be clear, people are “ things “. And it appears you where quick to figure out that articulation is a tricky beast. But you solved it with grace.
I really wish i knew you in person, you seem like a totally awesome best friend to have and chill with, chatting, theorizing, gaming, crafting and stuff with haha
Was happy to watch just for the mantis blade fabrication. Then you went into the Al welding and I was like YES. I have been looking for information on that for a few projects I want to make. So thanks for all of this. Cheers
Coming up with the ability for both pivot points to actuate together, I immediately thought of a self-leveling feature on a loader tractor which is a second actuating point that allows a loader tractor bucket to remain level throughout the entire movement of the loader arms articulation.
All the other mantis blades just kinda look like toys but omg, this looks so good? Actually would be amazing for cosplay as well (or cons just switch the real blade for fake ones), but it just looks so authentic omg. Amazing job!
I have a personal preference for the pronunciation of some words that's a mix of US and UK. There's an extra i in aluminium, there's a l in the middle of solder and there's no f in lieutenant. The build looks awesome.
I'd like to see the extension mechanism be driven by the grip with gears, so you can extend the blade independent from the swing. You could increase the force you can apply that way, rather than the blade's weight and momentum battling the force of the spring til the spring wins out. Crush force from your grip could overcome the return spring. From there you could either figure out something to cause them to lock up as to not apply all that force to your hands on impact or even set the leverage up to be greatly increased when extended. Squeezing two levers together in each hand could really drive some serious force, I'd love to see what that would do to some ballistic gel. After seeing the mantis blades work in game I figured the concept was that they were driven by the forearm muscles like a prosthetic hand. Not sure whether hydraulics would work for this, maybe thin narrow rams driven by motorcycle brake reservoir/levers?
I feel the obvious limitations of the mantis blade is that this version is unpowered, which limits its reach, power, and stability, but that's a limitation of modern technology because bolting motors onto this thing in 2020 would make it unwieldly. However, the demo as seen in Kyle's video shows that the blades on this weapon are very, very sharp, which overcomes those limitations to an impressive degree. Awesome bladesmithing!
I think it’s also partially because its realistically a little too big Now i get that she had to to use the lore accurate numbers for size But source material often varies from the in game design and to me it seems that the mantis blades in the actual source numbers are actually too big to actually be used and hide inside a hand. I think that if it was downsized it would be a LOT more useable and also have it easier to put in the complex mechanisms.
if you use two diffrent widnes of the lower joints you can extend the movement radius of the joints at all so it can extend and colapse completely, you can also include a shifting mechanism which shifts the position of the parallel joints for wire/spring/spring-wire-combination mechanism
You're awesome. Don't worry about aluminum vs. aluminium, it's charming to hear a little of both from the same person. Your welds around 6:42 and 6:45 look great to me (a layperson). Thanks for explaining so much about welding alumin(i)um. I loved the video and I think you are a badass.

Wow, that thing is huge! If I had a personal version I'd want it about half the size (maybe even 1/3 or 1/4) and for it to extend out to be nearly straight. I wouldn't use it anything like a mantis, but that pose could be used when in transport mode so I can still use my hands without the blades being in my way. Thinking about it, if the two parts making up the hinge were further apart and the rear part shortened, I believe that would keep it raised while sat back in transport mode and to come forward to a near parallel position in relation to the arm brace (with a locking mechanism also). Functionality would be limited to stabbing as slashing motions would be clumsy at best when compared to a sword of any type would be better by far.

Nicely done! Can't help to wonder though... What if you incorporate a "jack-knife" mechanism where the blade attaches to the frame so that, in the event of having an actual artificial limb, it would retract completely inside the arm.
