People saying this band wasn't popular or well liked are living under a rock. This was one of the biggest albums of the decade.
I agree! In fact I saw the video Just A Girl on MTV in 95 and was blown away. Bought the album Tragic Kingdom that day. Ended up telling my wife that evening this band is going to be huge.
PERIOD
#7 best selling album of 1995 and #65 for the 90s. Hit #1 in 3 countries and was top 3 in 10. Over 13.5 million confirmed sales. Not bad for a band whose first two albums sold less than 500k copies combined.
They were Huge here in New Zealand 🇳🇿 ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
IT WAS EVERYWHERE!
I miss this No Doubt so much. They were the shining light of third wave ska, somehow blending the fun of Californian punk into an already beautifully mashed up Anglo-caribbean sound. And Gwen, when she was the cool, punky Anaheim girl next door. She went all Hollywood a few years after this era, all high fashion and hip-hop infused pop. Nothing wrong with it, but not the Gwen Stefani us 90s teens grew up with. At least this album still captures the good times like few others can. ☺️
I don’t know if I’d put them “above” the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, the Aquabats, Goldfinger, etc. in the 3rd wave.
Don’t get me wrong…love No Doubt (this is my fav song)…but their departure from the ska sound started with this (their best) album.
Nailed it
THIS. so many times THIS
They were always a Ska band.
@@gregclarke2183 Idk if I'd ever say they were "above" those other bands, but they most definitely outsold them several times over. Nobody brought it to the mainstream (for better or worse) like No Doubt. That's just a simple fact.
Also, I'd wager that their album "Rock Steady" dived HARD into their ska/reggaeton/dancehall roots throughout the entire album, unlike most of their other albums (including Tragic Kingdom) where they interspersed that ska sound across a handful of songs through the album, but not to the degree that Rock Steady did.
The guy in the swing is Terry Hall, the lead singer of The Specials, No Doubts influence and probably the best Ska band ever.
I just loved the sound of this song when it came out. Ska, Reggae, it was like The Police, Madness, Dexy's MIdnight Runners, The Specials. Then Gwen's vocals. Soooo Good. Such a great bass line and beat.
I am not technically knowledge on music but the drums in that song are one of my favorites.
Add a saxophone to this song and it could Madness with Gwen singing,
You mentioned The Specials. Wasn’t that Terry Hall from The Specials who was sitting on the garden swing in this video? It looked like him!
*It's Ska Revival.*
Don't forget Sublime. She has a duet with the lead singer from Sublime "I Saw Red". You could almost put 311 in this category as well.
This was definitely one of the songs that describes summer of 97. Heavy rotation on MTV and the Box(remember that?). Along with Sugar Ray, Sublime, and the West Coast/East Coast feud. Great times!
I have to admit, I've never heard of The Box, and I watched MTV constantly throughout the late 90's. But totally agreed this was a perfect summer song in 97.
This is heavily influenced by English SKA SOUND 🎸off the tragic Kingdom album which is a Play on words of magic kingdom since she grew up close to Disneyland in Anaheim California
Such a great album. Road trip disc for sure
*It's ska revival, not ska.*
@@hulkhatepunybanner they were part of the third wave. The third wave continued on with the punk infusion that started in the second wave.
@@jpah8944 *Yeah. This round was more American. Mighty Mighty Bosstones et al.*
The guy on the swing at the end of the video is Terry Hall the leader singer of the 70's Ska band The Specials.
This was Ska. It's correct as Lex said it's a bit reggae infused with punk. Always loved Gwen, with No Doubt or solo.
Two-tone and Third Wave ska had punk influences, but the original movement in the 1960s in Jamaica predates punk.
This was played constantly on MTV along with Spiderwebs. Here are a few bands you guys should check out: Cherry Poppin'Daddy's - Zoot Suit Riot, Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell.
I never forget playing No Doubt for the girlfriend at the time and her saying Gwen sounded like
"Betty Boop"
Dale Bozzo of Missing Persons was the one who really sounded like Betty Boop.
So, did anyone mention Terry Hall sitting on the swing? Lead singer of one of the most influential SKA bands, The Specials. Also in Fun Boy Three and the Colourfield?
So glad you guys are exploring some old No Doubt. This is Gwen at her absolute best. Ska Gwen > Pop Gwen.
That guy you see in the start and sitting on the swing couch is the lead singer of The Specials, a ska band from the /my days. Terry hall
Odd use of Terry Hall, I’m guessing they were fans of the specials.
Brad and Lex the guy on the swing is Terry hall of the bands the specials and fun boy three who are a big influence on this band
No Doubt suggestions: "Hella Good", "Hey Baby", "New", "Ex-Girlfriend" and "It's My Life" (which is a cover of Talk Talk's).
They are a Ska band but the Tragic Kingdom did have to put some pop in it. Their first 2 albums and their album Rocksteady took it right back to their roots though. Plus they recorded Rocksteady in Jamaica so it really has that Reggae flavor in it. I love No Doubt. I've listened to them since the beginning.
Fun facts: the guy watching the band at the beginning and end of the video is Gwen's brother Eric Stefani who co-founded the band with John Spence, may he rest in peace. This song was co-written between Gwen and Tony Kanal (bassist). At the time Gwen and Tony were a couple and Gwen was in the bathroom with food poisoning so Tony was sitting in the hall and starting singing the hook for this song to help her feel better LOL.
Featuring Mr Happy aka Terry Hall of The Specials, The Fun Boy Three and The Colourfield....love this tune
BTW Ska came before Reggae....Bob Marley was a Rude Boi in the 60s
Completely forgotten this song. Mid 90s videos were ace.
Tragic Kingdom... this album + Crazy Sexy Cool + Jagged Little Poll = my childhood.
New Wave + Sunny Californian Pop + Ska + Punk Rock = this. Just. Right. The best of No Doubt.. other than the 90s icon "Don't Speak"
Gwen basically wrote all the songs on Tragic Kingdom about her break up with the bass player(I think his name is Tony Kanan). It was a massive hit. Every girl growing up in the 90s had this album. I'll never forget a girl I was off and on with singing "Don't Speak" to me drunk off her ass and changing the words saying I still loved another girl.....ahh the 90s.....back when I had more girls than time. It sucks getting old. You really start noticing that they don't even look at you anymore.😔
this was 90s ska, so many great bands you guys haven't gotten into yet from this era of ska
My fave No Doubt track. So underrated
The English Beat "Sooner Or Later"
This album is f'n gold !!!!!!
I have loved No Doubt, (and Gwen) since Just a Girl! And when this video came out I was in love even more!
I've known this song and video for 25 years or so. My reaction today: "THAT'S F**KING TERRY HALL 👆😲"
Gwen's vocals have always been unique.
For a glimpse of Southern California mid-90s Ska culture, watch a RUclips video titled, Sublime - Saw Red with Gwen Stefani, It is from a live show in 1995 and is pure Ska.
No Doubt needs to get back together.
Love this song, this album, love Gwen and her seamstress skills.
She sang with Sting at a Super Bowl half time show a few years back. Great live performer!!
Lol
She also inducted The Police into the Hall of Fame.....she a fan
I got to see (well, more like hear) No Doubt open for the Rolling Stones in Toronto in 2002 from backstage. LONG week, but it was worth coming into work a few hours early to catch it!
Gwen is my niece they made the video at my mom's house. It was a fun two days of filming.
"I thought. I like her voice. I feel, like, her voice I can listen to that all day. It's so odd."
Agree. Back in the early 90's, a friend of a friend put on their CD "No Doubt". That voice. I was hooked. It just seemed like the ultimate, super charged lounge singer voice.
For once, you guys don't get it. It's a meshing of ska and new wave. Very few other bands did this in the mid-'90s, although there were MANY revival ska bands at that time. This is one of the few songs from that album where her voice is the least interesting part of the song. The drums on this song are so cool and really fun to play.
I used to play this song in a cover band a while back. The crowd always went nuts for it. I seem to remember a few fights breaking out too 😂
"Some people loved it, others hated it, mixed reviews." That could be said for ANY of the songs yall have reacted to! Not just this one. And on the live stream, many actually liked this song and group. It was mainly the older people who complained (almost always does with '90s and '00s music anyways, just ignore them) or music snobs.
No Doubt was highly popular during the '90s and '00s. A very good band (they weren't just there as yall said). Its definetely ska/reggae influenced. Listen to the horns and beat! And the good bass guitars, beat. And this is called ska-punk. Very popular during the '90s and '00s (also people who listened to other genres). Ska-punk is very upbeat and danceable. Huge on the westcoast like California which feel good music of punk rock (and hip hop too) during the '90s and '00s to offset the sad sounds of grunge and post-grunge up north in Oregon and Washington (Seattle), Pacific Northwest. Ska-punk also big in the UK and east coast like NYC. No Doubt was ska/reggae with horns and new wave punk synthesizers, dance-punk. Alt rock. Its ska/reggae (Caribbean music and horns) mixed with punk rock music. That's why it sounded islandy. Punks and ska/reggae bands hung out and influenced each others music a lot back in the days (played at same underground clubs and audiences). They were influenced by Missing Persons (80s new wave group) , one of their influences. Check out more of Missing Persons.
Gwen Stefani (pretty and talented) was a punk rocker before the pop rap music she was doing after the mid 2000s.
Check out more No Doubt videos! They had tons of hits.
I took my teenage daughter to see them play at their old stepping grounds, ( Fullerton College) back in the 80's, it was a free concert, she's seen them two more times after that
Fun Fact: Gwen Stefani was dating Tony Kanal (Her band ate - The guy with the buzz cut) Stefani's first major public relationship was with Kanal, her bandmate from No Doubt. They dated from 1987 until 1994, at which point Kanal ended the relationship - which nearly ended the band, too, according to a 2004 Newsweek article. "I was completely passive, no goals. I was in love with Tony and just happy to be in the band. Then there was three years writing in our garage until [the 1995 album] Tragic Kingdom came out," Stefani told the magazine.
During their relationship, Stefani told The Guardian, she was less concerned with her career in music and more about the future of their romance. "All I ever did was look at Tony and pray that God would let me have a baby with him." The band did survive their breakup, and they continued performing together until the band went on hiatus in 2015.
I remember all my friends wondering what the hell was wrong with Tony for not wanting to be with Gwen. lol. the heart doesn't work like that. Love is complex.
Not a huge single from that record but my favorite. An amazing band that gets a lot of hate from the 'real music fans'.
I never understood why this one didn't chart higher. It's just a great track on an amazing album.
Tragic Kingdom and Dookie were my first CDs. I got them for my 12th birthday. It's all I listened to in middle school. I wore the CD out, before the end of high school.
@@TattooedTownie I think the world just had No Doubt fatigue at that point. Just a girl, spiderwebs, and don't speak were EVERYWHERE.. it's amazing this album had two more great singles with this and Excuse me mister (my other fav).
@@THEDEEPDIVE true enough. Then, here in Canada, Our Lady Peace dropped the album 'Clumsy' and it's was all over the charts. It hit #1 and buried a lot of bands on the charts for months. Including No Doubt.
@@TattooedTownie right and I know that album cause I grew up a few minutes from the Canadian border and got your rock stations on the radio and tv. Our Lady Peace wasn't big in much of the usa. I was kind of shocked at the low sales numbers. They seemed to have better luck with the Somewhere out there video.
It's music, why would 'real music fans' hate it?
It is not as if it is Rap. Apologies to the few Rap tracks that are music.
Always love the song. Great band! And yeah, I´d say Ska is some kinda mixture of Reggea & Punk. Good question regarding Gwen´s vocals at the end. Next one "Hey Baby".
You should check out some of the songs from the "Tragic Kingdom" tour... really something else :)
Can't think of many vocalists that sounds as unique as Gwen.
Their cover of “it’s my life” is great. Bathwater is good too.
I love No Doubt and Gwen Stefani’s voice is amazing and unique! My favorite song by them is Don’t Speak and I also love their remake of It’s My Life! Also check out Underneath It All and Just A Girl!❤️❤️
Yeah, My Poll Win!! This whole album is great!!
The Specials "Pressure Drop",, A Message To You,, Rudy",, "Monkey Man" & "Nelson Mandela"
She was so cool then- and just as cool now! She’s an excellent songwriter and singer!
There is a cameo by Terry Hall the singer of The Specials...more ska!
'90s, '00s ska-punk, new wave. Many great hits from No Doubt. See more of their videos! 🎷 💃 🎸 Yall have already done a few No Doubt songs and other ska-punk bands (Mighty Bosstones, Rancid, Reel Big Fish, Madness, Sublime, etc) if yall read the comments on those videos. Everyone already said what this style is.
Lpve SKA. Even punk ska.You guys have done Madness but you did Our house from their later more mainstream sound. Try One STEP BEYOND for great Ska from their first album. I literaly danced on the rable at their show. couldn't help it. Another great reagae tune you should check out is Lorna Bennet BREAKFAST IN BED not the original but beautiful.
*It's ska revival, not ska. Some folks call it punk-ska. Desmond Dekker is ska.*
Terry Hall from the specials in the video too. Who doesn't love Ska!
This MUST HEAR Classic HITS LIKE A BRICK!!,, The Ides Of March "Vehicle"
Trivial fact: The dude in the video, dressed in black, who just rocks up and sits down is Terry Hall, former lead singer of British SKA band The Specials.
I've never seen the video before - seeing Terry Hall was a surprise.
Hello again from New England.. Wow this brings me back to the mid 90's vibes..In 95 I saw No Doubt and Korn in Arizona..Great album all the way thru..And yes the singer and bassists we're involved and this album is about the break up..Peace ☮️
One Of The Founding Fathers Of Ska,, Desmond Dekker & The Aces "Israelites"...A MUST HEAR Classic.
Was he the one in the Madness video that they played tribute to.
@@Alpha_7227 Yes.
*The bands starting in the 1980s were/are playing SKA REVIVAL. It's a mix of punk/new wave and ska. True ska, a 1960s sound, was played by Desmond Dekker, The Skatalites. It's based on jazz and R&B and Caribbean music styles.*
@@hulkhatepunybanner Thanks,, I Am Aware Of That,, It Just Made Me Think Of The Early Days & Wanting To Give Tribute To Desmond.
This is definitely ska/reggae/pop rock. No doubt, Goldfinger, 311...all had a taste of eachother. Such good times
Idk bro but to me everytime I hear no doubt I think back to being a kid in the 90s. Big crush on Gwen from day 1 lol
Never been much of a No Doubt fan, but always liked this tune and I highly recommend checking Spiderwebs which is another I like!
I think this song might have to grow on you. This is probably a fan favorite. I love it, myself. Great album, great era. Miss the 90’s
Wicked games by The Weeknd!!!
My favourite song by No Doubt!
Gwen Stefani's got those torch singer pipes.
This was one of my favorite songs off the whole album (which had no bad songs to begin with!) It should have been way bigger than it was.
The nineties were pretty great. Good memories.
The guy sitting on the bench watching is Terry Hall from "the Specials"
Aloha, as usual...you guys make my mornings...a hui hou
Listen to the man who produced their big album, Matthew Wilder, to hear the basis of the sound. His song 'Break My Stride' was a charted release when I was a kid, and it holds up today.
Many great No Doubt tunes. Listening December 2023. Happy New Year's! 🎉
"I'm Just A Girl" - was their best song - and, I think, their biggest hit
Underneath it all is their biggest hit.
Sure don't speak is their biggest song?
@@chrisnorman1902 Underneath it all is their biggest by chart status. Perhaps by sales of singles... but singles sales dropped hard for everyone cause of the internet. I could also see Don't Speak have more staying power on spotify.
@@THEDEEPDIVE I'm in the UK - underneath it all only got to 18, but don't speak was number 1
@@THEDEEPDIVE also underneath it all was certified gold in the US, but don't speak was four times that with double platinum
Gwen has another great voice. This is of course before her marriage to. No Doubt's influence does seem to be from Caribbean sounds. If you listen to them you get that vibe.
Ska at its best from those wonderful 90s years as I love and it makes me very nostalgic no doubt
I always hear glimpses of the pretenders in this band
They were just having fun, in the video.
I've never been a no doubt fan but there is something about this song that hits home for me.
Love me some 90s Alternative Rock :D
This is my favorite ska song of all time. (Yes, ska punk is third wave so it's real ska, fight me.)
That little ska band from Orange County. We used to see them play at parties.
The whole Tragic Kingdom album was influenced by 80s new wave and a style of music called ska. Ska is pretty much a more rock based variation of reggae. Lyrically, a good portion of the album was about the breakup between Gwen and the bassist named Tony. They were a couple for a number of years. I kind of compare the album as a 90s version of the 70s classic Fleetwood Mac Rumours album. Only difference is that Tragic Kingdom focuses on just one breakup, while Rumours dealt with multiple breakups. If you haven't checked any songs from Rumours, you really should. Don't Stop, Songbird, Gold Dust Woman, The Chain.
*It's ska revival, not ska. Desmond Dekker is ska.*
Fair point
@@hulkhatepunybanner and rocksteady, and reggae 😁 sorry, had to
Yes 90's! I always liked No Doubt...
this is what angles sound like or this is what they want to sound like Gwen's voice is like honey to a sore throat
The man on the swing bench is SKA Legend Terry Hall of The Specials. you should check out some of their songs at some point.
Gwen Srefani's best music was when she was with No Doubt.
Filmed in my neighborhood you can see my house. The store she goes to is a little market up on the corner. The Man behind the counter is my dad Bill Flynn the kids are the owners children.
Ahhh Gwen Stiffani - oh yes!
You should do their song Total Hate. It's like speed punk meets ska at a reggae store.
The band were fans of The Specials....that's why Terry Hall is in the video. Yes Gwen was/is way more successful as a solo act, but personally, I prefer the group's sound over Gwen singing about being Hallaback Girl.
Gotta love Ska Oi Oi Oi!
Back to basics: best ballad “A Song For You” by Leon Russell 1969
The other guy in the video is Terry Hall from the Specials
Please you guys you must do ..... No Doubt - Oi to the World ........ You will love it !!
Fun fact - "You came in with the breeze on sunday morning" The Daily Breeze is a local newspaper here in socal.
FINALLY! A reaction to my favorite No Doubt song and video.
Sorry favorite song but favorite video from No Doubt was New.
I know this may not be appropriate, but it is sincere. I am a 65-year-old white guy and Lex is the most attractive female/girl/woman/person that I have seen in a long time. She is so beautiful and intelligent and has great insightful comments and opinions on the music. I would be proud if she were my granddaughter. Lex, you go for whatever you want because I believe you can achieve it. Love to both of you, really enjoy your reactions.
From one of my favourite albums ever... I'm proud to say I bought this as a kid and still own it at play it at nearly 40
Saw Gwen twice. One with no doubt and one solo. She’s a great performer.
An Early Classic,, Jimmy Buffett "Come Monday"
Terry hall (the specials) is in this video which adds to their ska image
Check out Metric another 90's band with a female lead singer. Gold gun girls ' Monster Hospital and Dead Disco to mention a few songs.
I think y'all are ready for Sunday Morning Coming Down by Kris Kristofferson, performed by Johnny Cash. It's an important song and has an amazing back story.
Terry Hall of the Specials on the swing bench. Check out some Specials!
