This was written by Gwen Stefani after her brother Eric, No Doubt's primary songwriter up to then, left the band. She wrote it about being frustrated at her father being overprotective due to her gender, saying at the time: "I wouldn't trade being female, for anything, but the guys don't understand what a burden it can be sometimes."
Biggest favor her brother ever did for her, even though he didn't mean for it to be. Where's she now and where's he?

@@ponfed I wasn't aware that he did so. I just know that she went on to make millions and marry Blake Shelton. She doesn't ever have to work again if she doesn't want to, but as with most performers, it gets in their blood and can't stop. I can understand it. There's a certain rush like no other when you get to the end of your performance and are hearing the applause, whistles, etc. I never really made it past the bar band stage, but people showing that they like your music is an amazing feeling

"Tragic Kingdom", the lp that this is off of is a really good album. Other good songs from it are "Spiderwebs" and "Sunday Morning". You guys have ready done "Don't Speak".

Great song! Loved this era in music! Gwen and Gavin Rossdale, my teenage crush, met around this time on tour and hooked up and eventually married and had kids. Divorced now but was probably a great love story between 2 famous musicians
I associate No Doubt with Garbage. They were 2 female led rock bands that got big at the same time. I think I remember this was big at the same time Garbage came out with “Only Happy When it Rains”.(or was it Stupid Girl?)

Gwen did this one, because her parents were super strict with her because she was a girl. You guys should check out Gwen & her hubby Blake Shelton's duets. My fav is 'Nobody but you' which is beautiful & then 'Anywhere with you' is a spunky one. It fun seeing & hearing her now, 20 plus years after this tune. She has a beautiful voice.
They definitely lived on TRL. They were huge when I was in middle and high school in the 90s & early 2000s.
People forget how she dated Bradley Nowell , the lead singer of Sublime.... Saw Red is a great song they did together.... you can definetly see that influence in her 1st album❤️

These lyrics are so god damn sarcastic and well written, I LOVE No Doubt. All these years later I still listen to them.

"Spiderwebs" one of my fav No Doubt songs
Been a fan of theirs since Eric, Gwen's brother, was in the band. Actually, Eric founded the band with John Spence. One of the best concerts I've been to as well. "Just A Girl" was their breakout hit from their 3rd album, Tragic Kingdom. A play on Disneyland being the "Magic Kingdom" because No Doubt is from Anaheim, CA where Disneyland is. Rocksteady is one of my favorite albums of theirs. "Hella Good", "Hey Baby", "Underneath It All" and they even did a song with Prince called "Waiting Room". I think it's a great album because they took it back to their roots of ska/punk band and they also recorded it in Jamaica. 😎👍
Also, this song was way ahead of its time. It wasn’t a girls anthem or empowerment song back then, like it should have been and probably would have been today. I haven’t listened or read the actual lyrics for a long time. Great lyrics.
They have a video called Live from the Tragic Kingdom. It's the final date in a two year world tour performed in their hometown of Anaheim. It's one of the best live performances ever recorded.

I loved No Doubt! I remember I wanted pink hair when I was a young because of Gwen, but I neve4 did it. Love the 80's 90's 2000 music. I remember MTV Oasis, Duran Duran, Garbage, Linkin park, Placebo... the only 'new' artist that I 'adopted' is Louis Tomlinson because he makes music with those influences, I love his songs and writing style.
Now you should check out “Stupid Girl” by Garbage. The two songs came out in within months of each other. Similar themes. And Garbage is amazing!!
The best artists can write deep lyrics but put them to songs and melodies that everyone can listen to. No doubt was great at doing that.

Asia and BJ, y’all would enjoy Gwen and Blake Shelton’s songs. It’s a tour of their love story. Add in Carson Daly…he officiated their wedding. When Blake was building their “house” on their ranch, Blake built Carson his own cabin/house. The friendship is beautiful.

I was maybe in my late 20s - early 30s when this came out. I remember thinking - yeah that kinda sucks about being a girl. But I always did whatever I wanted. Walked the dog in the dark (oh you shouldn’t do that), go to concerts by myself, I did whatever I wanted. Do I relate to the lyrics? Absolutely. But I’m no victim. I’m a strong person. Society’s ridiculous ideas are a slight irritation.

Guys ,I'm a sailor, but I grew up cowboying in the N Ga mountains. My little sister is 7 years younger than me. Women should be treated equally. If we can agree on that, can we agree, with exceptions, when you need the strength, and just all out I'll put it my body between you and harm, would you rather have a 5ft 100 lb girl/woman , or a 6ft 200 lb man between you and that danger? I'm all for equal rights. No reason not to. Unfortunately, not all situations are equal. I love that song,and sympathize, but thinking about how my dad treated my brother, and I ,compared to my sister ? She had some restrictions we didn't, but when it was 35 degrees, raining, and a cow,or horse, down in the pasture, or a fence down, my dad didn't yell for my sister. She was likely overly protected.
