I believe this was their most popular song, but REM is a different band ever album. I good once over of all of their different styles. Radio Free Europe, Driver 8, this tune, Drive, What's the Frequency Kenneth, Man on the Moon, Lotus, Living Well is the Best Revenge.
"Losing my Religion" would be much more of a signature song than "Everybody Hurts". So would "It's the End of the World As We Know It". Or "Stand". Or "Radio Free Europe" or "This One Goes Out To the One I Love" (which was their mainstream breakout song). They're all good songs though.
This song is about unrequited love. Once you have that in mind, listen to it again and it makes completes sense. I also used to listen to this song when I was a kid and never really analyzed the lyrics and picked it back up again when I was an adult, and I love this song now. By the way, I love the videos, Asia and BJ. Keep them coming!
What I love so much about these type of songs, is that the meaning is individual to the person who is listening to it ❤ REM does like to delve deep into lyrics, & if you haven't listened or reacted to their Everybody Hurts, I would highly recommend it! Great reaction & commentary guys !!!
R.E.M. were one of the few bands to successfully maintain their independence and guided their career largely as they wanted to. They made very few concessions to or compromises with record companies or management agencies. I think they were able to do this because, along the way, they found people who could help them who were genuine fans, and bigger financial interests realized that if you pushed these guys, they would have no hesitation about just making records in somebody's garage studio and playing college hangouts and dive bars in front of 20 people for the rest of their lives...
For what it's worth I'm told Losing my religion is a southern expression that means losing you sh*t. Losing one's temper and saying things not in line with your religious upbringing.
R.E.M are from Georgia, and as a southerner myself I can verify that yes, that is a thing people say down here. Or at least they used to. Not so much anymore.

For me I discovered this song about late 2005 right after high school was introduced to it by a girl who I had been crazy in love with since middle school but was stuck in the friend zone and the lyrics of this song are so spot on for anybody who has ever been in that situation saying that's me in the corner being the person who's in the corner who's not seen you're not seen by the person that you're in love with. That's me in the spotlight Losing My Religion going absolutely crazy trying to get noticed wanting to be in the spotlight of this person's eye. Consider this the hint of the century you know trying to express yourself to this person without just opening up and pouring your heart out because you're afraid that you will lose what you have with them every whisper, you love to hear their voice every waking hour they're on your mind you are choosing your confessions you go over and over in your mind different ways you could just open up and pour it out and confess your love to someone. The line oh no I think I said too much you're afraid of saying too much and scaring this person away but you haven't said enough you haven't just come clean and told them how you feel

Exactly. When you are not sure the other person is on the same page you are suddenly 'in the spot light'. Going against yourself said by Asia, but this is about coming out and pretending you are straight. Said too much.....gets me every time.
This is not about fame, it’s about unrequited love. It represents the feeling of a love slipping away because the other person is losing interest. The title ‘Losing My Religion’ has a double meaning - both the feeling of losing your composure and viewing your love of someone and the relationship as a religion. Lose my religion, i did this shortly after high school and started reading the Bible for myself, which By The Grace Of GOD helped me apply this to other "same" situations life and people try get others to go along with
What most artists love about their songs is that they like to audience to interpret the way that they understand it the best it's not always about the original message
Interesting side peace. They were mentors and friends to radiohead when they were coming up. Thom Yorke of radiohead became good friends and really looked at REM as inspiration. Even watch Thom dance and this lead singer and see what I mean. Very abstract types of dance😄

Based on my experience watching you guys (probably like 75+ of your reactions) and the type of song this is (early 90s alternative/indie/college rock)…I’m surprised that Asia, rather than BJ is the one who is familiar with this song. Generally BJ (being older) is more familiar with older music and music of genre’s that cross stereotypical cultural barriers. I love all good music and as a musician I can recognize good music of any genre whether it’s a genre I typically gravitate towards or not. With that said, when this song came out I was probably around 9 and in those days (until sometime in high school) I was strictly rap and maybe r&b. This song was so catchy and popular tho, that I couldn’t help but hear it all the time…so I’m not surprised that Asia remembers this from her childhood…I guess I’m just more surprised that BJ ain’t hip. You gone learn today big homie…lol. I love what u guys do.
In a way, we all have different roles at different times. For example, I put forward a different front when I'm being an uncle to my nieces and nephews versus how I would be with friends at the bar versus at a family function. They are all facets of who we are. Which brings up a great song to check out, "The Stranger" by Billy Joel. It also has one of the epic whistling parts of all time.
Michael Stipe asked me to watch his twister mat while he went into a club in Athens, GA--bizarre but memorable moment! He sat down next to my wife at his restaurant there, and she had to summon all her will not to 'lose her religion' right there...
I had an uncle who was in a country band in the 80's. He got a deal with a record label but they wanted him ( singer) but put him with different guys for a band. He was married with kids and a wife. The had him move and pretend to be single . He had a couple small hits before he ended quiting/fired because he wasn't wanting to continue that way.
No I think what REM is singing about and specially lead singer is basically isn't religious and isn't going to be dictated to by the church that's why in the Line he is saying he will choose his confessions and not the church
One of the most popular overplayed songs ever. Some of their other hits are: Nightswimming, Orange Crush, Stand, Everybody Hurts, shiny happy people, the one I love, man on the moon, end of the world.
"Losing my religion" is also, I have been told, a southern expression meaning "losing one's cool." The video also has a lot of religious imagery which can be interpreted many ways, I think- but the song is about someone he loves who he cannot tell. Michael Stipe is also bisexual, so this may be part of that as well, I'm not sure.
I've always really felt the lines " Oh no I've said too much; I haven't said enough"... too often I've tried to say something and as soon as I open my mouth, they shut me down, because they don't want to hear it(I've said too much), but I have so so much more that I need to say(I haven't said enough). Just a personal interpretation of that line. Also, I was always oddly fascinated by the way he dances, like he just doesn't care...he moves how he feels; it's very expressive.
This classic song is about a couple fighting all the time and about to get a divorce. He’s saying that every single conversation between them ends up in a fight and losing my religion is a metaphor for the deteriorating relationship/marriage.
In Georgia, "Losing My Religion" has nothing to do with actual religion, "Losing My Religion" is about doing everything humanly possible to not whoop someone's ass and or check somebody.
Michae Stipe said the song is about being in love with someone but not being able to tell them, and worrying that you will let your feelings slip out. 'Hint of the century' 'Oh no I've said too much'.

No I think what REM is singing about and specially lead singer is basically isn't religious and isn't going to be dictated to by the church that's why in the Line he is saying he will choose his confessions and not the church
Asia this song is about romantic expression.. Losing faith in someone you trusted and loved
My wife and I love you guys.. Asia has a beautiful voice!
One of the most popular overplayed songs ever. Some of their other hits are: Nightswimming, Orange Crush, Stand, Everybody Hurts, shiny happy people, the one I love, man on the moon, end of the world.
Orange Crush is great.
Keep Jammin Asia...life comes full circle!
I learned this on ukulele. I really like this song.
Religion is bad. Relationship with God is real.
You guys did a good job analyzing this song.
Please react to REM "everybody hurts"🔥🔥🔥
this is one of my fav. song
“Orange Crush” is still their best, classic tune
Definetly Tragically Hip- 38 years old, Fiddlers Green, Wheat Kings, New Orleans Is Sinking, live in Abbotsford 08/08/2009
Song- it's the end of the world, also Everybody Hurts.
Right with you. Cannot recall a time my first line of something was interrupted by someone who has decided he knows what I'm GOING to say... Christ!
My favorite R.E.M. song is maybe Driver 8. It is very old. But musical gold.
To me he’s talking about marriage. I cry every time I hear this song.
This classic song is about a couple fighting all the time and about to get a divorce. He’s saying that every single conversation between them ends up in a fight and losing my religion is a metaphor for the deteriorating relationship/marriage.
Shiny happy people is another great rem song
Losing my religion = Losing my temper! (Southern term). "Boy, you about to make me lose my religion!".
Great work!
GREAT SONG.
A classic song with a classic video I haven't seen anyone react to, so I hope you guys do is The Connells '74/75'
You guys are good. Try REM's 'Man on the Moon' or 'Daysleeper'.
In Georgia, "Losing My Religion" has nothing to do with actual religion, "Losing My Religion" is about doing everything humanly possible to not whoop someone's ass and or check somebody.
REM’s audio version of “Find The River” is quite special.
According to the singer, this is a song of unrequited love
Michael Stipe has a very unique voice, id guess its inspired by James Taylor... His dance is consistent though.. Its just as unique.
It's a song about unrequited love.
Lacuna Coil does a great cover of this one. Well worth a que-up.
They should listen to Bang and Blame. Awesome song.
