  • Baron 1898 is a Bolliger & Mabillard dive machine at Efteling. This is a well-themed coaster featuring multiple pre-shows, a dark ride segment, and an original soundtrack. The layout is smaller and simpler than most dive coasters, but it features all the essentials.

I've always loved how this one looks. I didn't know they did so much with the theming. I like that animatronic of Baron Gustavimnotevengonnatrytosaythatlastname.

With this ride, I expected great theming followed by a weak, two-second ride. Instead, I got addictively great theming followed by a great ride, with an excellent drop followed by a great airtime hill. The ride felt complete to me. I ended up marathoning this for a while on my second day.

This is probably the best themed B&M which is really cool, but I feel like it wouldn't be as thrilling of a ride as Griffon which is the only dive coaster I have ridden.

The rusted green colour is actually called "Pieck's blue". It is part of a 3 colour pallet (blue, red, yellow) used by Anton Pieck, the original designer of the Efteling, and can be found all over the park, especially in the fairytale forrest.
But you're right. The high amount of grey in the mixture, makes it looks weathered to create that nostalgic feeling.

Baron 1898 is a good dive coaster (the best one I've ridden so far). I'm currently working on a vector art version of the ride. It's an impressive ride to look at but it isn't one of my favorite coasters ever. 2nd best at Efteling imho.

Considering the overall cost for a coaster it seems like an obvious choice to budget a little bit more to make it a fully immersive, themed ride like this. I hope to ride this some day. Thanks for the review.

Baron is not the most trill ride there is, but the theming and music makes it. All those details are Just amazing. The preshows, the lifthill, the sound of the bell when you are on top.... Well just love this ride.....

  • @zacg_

I personally prefer theme parks over amusement parks and Baron 1898 is a good example of why that is. To judge this only as a coaster would be absurd. This is an experience. The show room and the preshow are why the rest of the coaster works so well.
Splash Mountain would be a very highly ranked log flume even without the mountain structure, dark ride sections and infectious music. But those elements are why it is the overall best. It's an experience, and the storytelling gets you pumped for the final drop.
Baron isn't just a coaster and it's all the better because of that fact.

Growing up with Efteling, I'm sort of used to the hour long lines the roller coasters usually get. Everything is family focused, so no ride is particulary extreme. I love Baron, especially after being able to have some ERT at a company party two-three years back. I keep going back between Baron and the Flying Dutchman as my favourite though, that theming is even better!

This ride is insanely well themed with that lift hill and drop and station.
