- Godzilla returns after a 9 year absence with a reboot that is bound to knock your socks off. Although, the war is cold, so you might want to keep them on. Is this film worthy of being the Return of Godzilla or should he have just stayed in the 70s? Let's watch to find out.

Good review on a good if somewhat slow start to the Heisei era of Godzilla. P.S. Did you know that the godzilla toy you have in your hands is based on the godzilla design used in this movie?
Yep.

This movie though rather slow-paced and somewhat boring wasn't bad considering that it was the first movie of the heisei series! Add to the fact that it's got a rather underrated Godzilla design makes this movie underrated despite its slow-paced runtime.
While I prefer the 89 design, I do think this Godzilla design is quite good.
I never understood why the official 2016 DVD release for this movie was just the japanese cut excluding Raymond Burr couldn't wrap my mind around that :/
Licensing issues. If I recall what Kraken said (as they did try to get it), there are sound effects used in the 85 cut that are copyrighted by a defunked company and because the company defunked, no one can get permission to have them in their film, and without that permission, they can not legally release it.
I get teary eyed when Godzilla Screams in the volcano
:-)
Me too!
Interesting fact the actor of professor Hyashida also played the cop in Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster and the actor of Mr. Chujo from the original Mothra is in this
Yep. I love when Toho does that. :-)
i seen the American Version of Godzilla 1984, i gotta say seeing Raymond Burr gives me Chills
Why's that?
I'm a little surprised that you didn't do this with the American version. But anyway when I saw this as a kid I didn't know what to think. But I think this movie is cool. Also unlike the last one for Terror of Mechagodzilla even though Goranger was around they didn't have a giant robot yet. But now were in the 80's so how awesome would it be if Bioman was here? And Shaider.
I didn't have any copies of the American version at the time I did this. Hell, this review was also based on the Toho BD, not even the American one, hence why none of my scenes have any subtitles in it.
You said that the diplomat scene was unnecessary but it clearly was one of the most important scenes in the film.
I don't remember anymore why I said what I said since I reviewed this five years ago. :-)
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork he's right 👉
Yea, I think it really set the tone of the movie showing that this was a HEIGHTENED cold war era. And it also showed that both superpowers were REALLY pushing nuclear weapons
Welcome Godzilla.
:-D
Quick correction: Akira Ifukube was actually retired during the production for the film. He was asked to come back, but he and Honda both felt that Godzilla died with Eiji Tsuburaya. Also, he felt deterred from scoring a movie that featured an 80-meter-tall monster.
How is that a correction? Just curious as it was over two years ago when I reviewed this movie, so I don't recall the context as to which you are referring to. :-)
+Kaiju no Kami You said the reason Akira Ifukube couldn't score the movie was because he was busy with another project, but he was actually still in his retirement at the time, only serving as a music instructor.
Ah, the research I did for this movie just told me he was busy and couldn't do it. Thanks.
@@tyrantgregcagkaiju71 No that is 100% false. It was only because he was busy with another project. Stop lying.
I'm In A Vegetative State Help me Check his filmography. Before Gojira ‘84, his last work was in 1978. He didn’t start composing again until 1990 for some documentary, before finally returning to Godzilla in 1991. In regards to the ‘84 movie, he even said so himself that he wasn’t eager to compose for a monster that was 80 meters tall.
Well some day Shout! Factory will released Godzilla 1985 on DVD and blu ray
+CubanPete1990 Kraken Releasing is going to be doing it!!!!
I think Godzilla sank into the earth when he fell into the volcano, but this was retconned in Godzilla Vs. Biollante.
It could be.
I used to hate this movie but when I watched it I liked it
I had mixed feelings on it as a kid too.
The irony of them altering the scene with the Russian colonel is that one of the characters in the English dub _still_ refers to the launch as being accidental.
Makes me wonder if that change was made at the last minute after the dub actors had recorded their lines.
Probably.
AFTHER GODZILLA EVOLVED INTO A SUPERHERO THEY DECIED TO MAKE HIM A BAD GUY AGAIN A DEADLIEST UNDEMAMNED FORCE OF DESTRUCTION A PEVILEST DESISHION THAT WE'LL EFFECT THE REST OF THE SERIES
I also liked alot of the japanese scenes that the american version elft out that would have made more sense left in, like the extended boat fight with the creature, and the photos being shown to the rescued sailor guy and a few other scenes that were cut from teh american release
Was it? I haven't watched the American cut since 1996 on VHS, so I don't remember much of it.
a couple years ago i watched them both back to back to compare tehm, and also there is a bootleg dvd you can get supposedlyl online somehwere that has the dub and sub versions along with king fo the monsters
I know there is a bootleg, I just don't like to support them with money. I'd rather download for free than pay some pirate. However, I really would have preferred to review it with an official copy, but that doesn't seem possible. I've got KotM on my Criterion BD.
This is the first movie I saw when it was brand new. I saw it with my 2 brothers, and it BLEW us away! Of course, we saw the dubbed "Godzilla 1985" version. I never saw the Russians as baddies though. The Colonel was setting off the weapons because he thought it was right, not out of mustache-twirling villainy.
I also REALLY like the addition of Raymond Burr-he really lent gravity to the movie. But I couldn't stand the redhead soldier-his jokes seemed so off to me (Urban renewal indeed!)
I also thought that Godzilla destroying the Super X was the most evil he's been since killing Mothra and going after the egg in "Godzilla vs the Thing". Although I still choked up when he was falling into the volcano-especially his terrified scream at the end! (I don't think that was in the Japanese version)
Say, you didn't answer my question earlier, but why are some of your critiques missing?
Godzilla 1985 was also my very first Godzilla movie. I haven't watched that version since like 95 though.
Which critiques?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork This WASN'T my first Godzilla movie, I said it was my first one new! I saw most of the others already, but in a retro theatre on weekends in the early 80s. I saw this NEW in 1985
And Godzilla's Revenge, Terror of Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla vs Biolantte are missing! Can you send me links to those critiques? (Did you not see my comment?)
That was my introduction to a god called Zilla.
Hahahahahaha

5. Destoroyah
6. Mothra

I like how this movie isn’t cheesy and goes back to its dark routes like the original film
Yeah, it was a nice change from pace.
Kaiju no Kami even though some people have done this maybe can you do a video about taking about the three solo Godzilla movies.
What do you mean?
Kaiju no Kami make a video about the three solo Godzilla films Godzilla 1954,Godzilla 1984.and shin Godzilla
Best godzilla movie ever other than godzilla final wars
Curious, what makes this one your favorite?
+Kaiju no Kami It's a homage to the 54 film awesome plot and godzilla himself he looks badass and scary in fact he's scarier than the 54 godzilla
Could have Masaru Sato scored the film?
I don't know if his music would have worked well with this one.
One the biggest reasons the preferred not to use nuclear weapons was because Godzilla would just absorb the radiation and it wouldn't work on him anyway. This films character The Professor even stated in both dubs Godzilla is indestructible.
6:36 The only explanation of why that woman why smiling is because she’s a huge fan of Godzilla and was probably happy to see him again.
lol
I would be
Man! was this movie dark but in a good way.
I really like Godzilla's look during the Heisei era as it is my favorite look, and I like how he was recontextualized as being a monster that consumes nuclear energy, which makes sense since he made out of radiation.
I also really like the soundtrack as it is very dark and atmospheric. and I like a lot of the miniatures in this film.
And I also liked a few of the characters, my favorite being the Hobo and the Prime minister of Japan.
And I honestly prefer this style as posted to the 2014 and 2016 movies.
But what was interesting was that I got a VSH tape version of the US release, the one with Ramon Burr, and a couple years later I got the uncut version on DVD and enjoyed that version even more since it had a lot of cool scenes that were cut out like with Godzilla's reflection, and I like how Russia isn't portrayed as the villains. which was a problem that I had with the US version since it altered certain scenes to make the Russians the Bad guys.
Easily among my top favorite Godzilla movies!
Yeah, this one is quite good and I totally agree with you about the scene of Godzilla's reflection in the building, that is so cool.
Wouldn’t nuclear weapons make Godzilla stronger
You'd think so.
Gzilla100
You’re forgetting one thing
Human military in a Kaiju film
Trunks Vegeta Briefs and your point is
I like how Godzilla uses magnetic fields to navigate like birds, especially since he a dinosaur, and their ancestor.
lol
I was waiting for him to see that Godzilla found a flock of seagulls, and then ran so far away, but I think I'm of a different generation than you guys. (Ironically, with this movie being made in '84, the reference is VERY appropriate)
Also Godzilla wasn't revived he was reawakened. Godzilla was still alive when the Super X shot those missiles. They only knocked him out. It's confirmed in the script he was knocked out.
+John Reeves Honestly, I can't speak on that aspect as I haven't watched the movie dubbed since 1992 and I only saw it subbed once in 2001. Everything afterwards has been raw between the Region 2 DVD and BD. Thanks for the info.
There are two English versions of this movie. The Return of Godzilla (International Dub featuring a lot of the voice work from the 70s films and vs Biollante), and Godzilla 1985.
The latter is the one you are likely referring to when it comes to edits.
Also both versions contain that Godzilla cry before he falls into the volcano.
I think this Godzilla movie owes most of ANYTHING to Submersion of Japan and Prophecies of Nostradamus. It feels like a disaster film. Godzilla himself is the disaster and the plot revolves around him.
Finally, this is a pretty good review series. Will you ever get to Mothra 61? I think that one's a solid film.
+MiniraShine Thanks. I learned about the international dub not too long ago. As for Mothra, next month is the plan.
I love this movie the special effects are possibly my favorite the sets are incredibly realistic if you're looking for a good version the kraken releasing version on blu ray is possibly the best overall 8.9/10
Yeah, I have the Kraken release. I bought it the day it came out so it is nice to have subtitles when I watch the movie.
I recently bought this movie and then I watch it when I got home, and I liked it. I actually considered it my favorite Godzilla movie of the Heisei Series, and I also considered the suit in this movie my all time favorite Godzilla suit ever.
Cool. I definitely like the design more today then I did years ago.
Kaiju no Kami Awesome to know that. I do want to point out that I seen that you had some grapes about the animatronic in this movie, but I actually thought (though to be fair, it doesn't look anything like the suit itself) it looked awesome in my opinion.
It's more with how his nose seems to be really scrunched up and the lip movement that bothers me.
Kaiju no Kami Which is fine with me, it's your opinion and I can respect that. Also, I'm pretty disappointed that my DVD copy I bought last night didn't have the Americanized version with Raymond Burr.
That was to be expected though as Kraken said they can't legally obtain the rights to the film because of its music and sound effects.
8:18: Scream
What?
There was a picture of Akira Kurosawa when you mentioned Ishiro Honda at 1:57
+Nick Pacheeks Oops.
That's also a different Koji Hashimoto pictured at 2:05
In all honesty, I do not blame you for that particular slip up. Hashimoto's a very obscure director. The only reason I was able to point out that slip up is because I've collected so much 1984 merchandise. Haha
Yeah, I try to make sure I can find the right people, but it does seem to be harder than you would think. It's way I've pretty much given up on posting pictures of directors and staff unless I know for sure those are the right guys. Of course, it doesn't mean I still won't screw up as in my Death Kappa review.
Well we have this film in it’s original form now. And boy do I love every moment of it. The Heisei series is to me the best. Seems Toho likes them a lot too. As Godzilla in his Heisei design is like treated as the definitive version of him. Plus being a Tanaka’s last Godzilla series he ever wrote does make sense as to why the honor this Godzilla more. Again this is from what I am seeing.
I have a lot of mixed feelings on the Heisei series. :-)
You are a better nostalgia critic where these you do tell the story of the movie but you actually give good reasons what you like or hate the movies instead of just giving a two second thought on the movie
Well thank you. :-) Nostalgia Critic was really what influenced my channel originally. Plus, I took feedback from people based on my first few reviews that said I should give more insight on the movies themselves after I recap them, so I listened.
5:06 Did you saw that man sitting opposite to Hayashida?
That guy was played by Hiroshi Koizumi.
Yep. :-)
Since you mentioned that Summit seen and how the world was thinking at the time have you ever heard of a movie called Monster X Strikes Back attack the G8 Summit it's part Kaiju part political satire comedy with a hero Kaiju that looks a lot like Daimajin and a wtf villain reveal I dare not spoil
I have heard of it, but I've never seen it.
Have you seen the og robocop
Yes. I've seen both the original film and the remake. None of the sequels.
i find the american cut of this movie to be superior, the japanese versino has SOME better parts to it i will admit, particuarlyl the end creidts score and some of the super x stuff, but i like the american cuts opening better
But the American cut removes the anti-nuclear weapons message... That's cool though. I've been thinking about doing a "From the Files of Steve Martin" type of review for the American cuts to both this and 84. I was just holding out to see if we would end up getting 85 released officially in the US since I don't like going the bootleg route. But that's fine, I've got a VHS rip of the movie.
I just now bought this movie from vintage stock. i was upset when I found out it didn't have the American version.
Kraken explained back over the summer why they can't release the 1985 version. The people who own the sound effects no longer exist, so no one can get the license to those, thus, they can't release it.
Hey, how did you get a copy of King Kong Vs. Godzilla with the Japanese version?
I either bought it from Amazon Japan or CDJapan, I can't remember which since it was back in 2002 that I got it.
you know this was the first video i saw of your witch is why i kind of like it best . i know i dont know you and were not friends but i like writing to you and sharing opinions
Why thank you. And I like reading everyone's opinions whether I agree or disagree with them.
i dint find the seen the the pry minister and the american and russians boring i found it fascinating but i have an interest in government and i think it ads some realism to how the government would act a bizarre situation
+dornravlin It's been a while since I've watched the review, but I don't remember saying it was boring, it was more of the use of nuclear weapons that bothered me. Anyway, good news, Kraken Rising just announced they will be releasing this on DVD and BD in Sept. YAY!!!!
Ah yes, we will be getting Godzilla 1985, complete with the Pentagon, Brought to you by Doctor Pepper
weldonwin
Yeah, once I get through everything and do a few other movies I plan to do a Steve Martin review.
Kaiju no Kami
I loom forwards to your review of King of the Monsters... 1985, not so much. Oh, does this mean you'll be covering the two American movies? Zilla can suck a big pile of fish, but I actually liked the 2014 Godzilla
weldonwin
I'll definitely be doing the 2014 movie after Final Wars, but I'm not sure when I'll be doing the 98 one, if at all. I'm still in debate on that because I don't really think my review can do anything different from what the Nostalgia Critic already did.
Kaiju no Kami oh yeah need get Godzilla 2014 prequel graphic novel! here link www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Awakening-Legendary-Max-Borenstein/dp/1401252524
i cant really remember this one did this one have the drill missile things? i vaguely remember really liking this one.
thanks
Wow, I never saw this question. I believe you are thinking of GMK.
Call me crazy but... I don't like this movie. I really want to though, but I couldn't really get into it.
It's taken me years to really like the movie. The US edit was the very first Godzilla movie I had ever seen and I thought it was... well... not very good. I'm so glad I watched Godzilla vs The Thing and Godzilla vs Monster Zero afterwards (what the VHS tapes I rented from Video Factory went by) next because I might not have become the fan I am today if I hadn't. Well, that is not true. I would have eventually became a fan, just not in 1987.
You know what this movie call'ed The Return of Godzilla (1984) a.k.a Godzilla 1985 should be official released on DVD from Shout! Factory right?
+CubanPete1990 I wish, but it would have to be a BD release.
this is the first Godzilla movie saw when I was 6 years old same time I played big legos in summer 1990 then after that I built Godzilla out of legos and do that on minecraft 27 years later
Wow, that is awesome. I also used to build monsters with my Legos when I was a kid.
Review the English version! :D It's awesome!
I eventually plan to do a Steve Martin review (KotM and 85), but I need to find a good quality version of 85 since the only one I have is a piss poor VHS rip.
Luck has it that you can find it on google. Just type in 'return of godzilla download'. :)
I've done that, that is how I found the VHS rip.
Looks high quality to me. Have you checked the second one which was Godzilla 1985,assuming you already have that one?
I'll have to relook then.
what was that frst scene from, that weird CGI thingy
That was from one of the Godzilla video games. I believe Destroy All Monsters Melee.
thanks man
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Oh! I actually thought that was you in a getup! I find I get only about half of your references
I have an honest question that needs an honest answer... Do you think Godzilla movies should be watched in order or do you think it's fine to just watch any Godzilla movie? (And by order, I mean ranging from Showa to Millennium)
It depends on the era. I definitely feel the Heisei movies need to be watched in order, but Showa and Millennium sans Tokyo SOS are fine if you don't see them as such.
how tall is 80 meters?
About 260 feet.
Kaiju no Kami And 135m?
@@lukasytparadise7211 About 440 feet my American friend! Hehe!
6:09
What about it?
i'm marking where I left off;also excited Godzilla 1984 is finally getting a U.S release this year, though it won't be the New World pictures version.
Oh, okay. I thought you were trying to ask about something at that time stamp. I'm okay with the BD just being the Japanese version. The US release would have been a cool bonus feature, but that is exactly how I would have pictured it as, a bonus feature.
when are you going to review the english version ?
I was waiting to see if they were going to bring it out to DVD/Bd before I reviewed it, but they aren't. As such, I'll have to deal with a VHS copy. As for reviewing it, I'm not going to review it in a traditional sense, but I'm going to merge it with King of the Monsters and do a review about Steve Martin.
