  • Michael in a yellow Wharram Tanenui 28 and myself in a yellow Wharram Pahi 31 sail together from the northern tip of the south island, to the northern tip of the north island. A trip of at least 400 miles, depending on where you decide to stop!
    Strong winds, becalmed, then a gale.
    But arrive with plenty of dry clothes left over so a successful trip!
    Perhaps next year there will be another yellow catamaran rally!
    If you also have a yellow catamaran and would like to join us please post a comment!

    beautiful trip. nothing better to give value to our bed than exposing ourselves to the elements of nature.

      you know funny thing is walk down the marina in nelson and quite a few of the boats are different colours, but then arrive at an anchorage in auckland and nearly every boat is white!

      haha fairly medium wildness compared to my other trips around here. I got plenty of rest and had plenty of dry clothes - and a dry bed - at the end!
      I anchored one day, repaired the self steering then did another over night sail (while I had a favorable wind) that's my best measure of success, being ready to go again! after previous trips I needed a couple of weeks rest before another big sailing mission

    What is your sleep routine

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  Год назад

      Half our naps at night, then one 2 hour sleep after sun rises. One 2 hour sleep i dont feel like am going crazy. If i am becalmed or hove to then sleep however i need. Sometimes i have a daytime nap, if i feel tired. This trip i was quite well rested being becalmed and then a gale!

    You are truly on a shoe string budget aren't you ! I wish i could help but i also have a tight budget being retired ! Looks like you need to up-date everything and that costs money. Is it a hard life your living , i would say without bad luck youd have no luck !Good Luck Brother and keep a positive attitude !

      Haha gonna take this as a complement! tbh there isn't really anything I would want at the chandlery. I could buy stuff, but I prefer to have the simplest stuff. Stuff that I can repair, and even build myself. So really I'm not as poor as I might look, I'm just living well within my means!

    Are you open to giving sailing lessons to someone who has never sailed before?

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  Год назад

      Well, I've often done that with friends! but probably the best is to take a sailing course provided by a local yacht club. Being good at sailing is not the same as being good at teaching sailing. Once I was that person who had never sailed before, didn't know anyone with a boat, took a course. Looking back, they were a very good teacher! But if for some reason, you just _really_ want to learn from _me_ I guess I'd consider it, so I guess I am open to that.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  Год назад +1

      great! what bits? I aspire to making sailing look accurately scary. Most youtube sailing makes it look too easy. The camera rarely comes out when things are getting intense, so the easy stuff is over represented!

      @@dominictarrsailing I think it's the creaky sounds, decent waves, sleep deprived combo, plus the feeling of confronting those conditions solo is all a bit gut wrenching

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  Год назад +1

      @@richdecibels watching the footage here I'm surprised to see myself yawning so often! I got pretty good rest on this trip, didn't even hallucinate at all! unlike the time I sailed to wellington in my monohull.
      Some sailors take crew they've only just met on passages... but then I hear stories about interpersonal conflicts... and I really don't want to deal with THAT, and a storm.
      My policy is to only take crew on a passage if they've already been cruising with me. So far all my passages have been solo, but there are some I've invited.
