Proa Expedition Part 2, Seas Calm and Wild
This is the second part of my trip to the DCNZ raid - the return home. This turned out to be a lot more challenging than the trip there! But I learnt a lot of cruising things, things you can't really learn by day sailing.
I put some good miles on the lugsail rig, and it did really well, most importantly - it worked well reefed, when I needed it. It's definitely more of a handful to shunt though, but cruising you are actually generally going a long way without shunting. I also learnt some things about how to land and get off a beach with breaking waves - just small waves but still this gives my proa a unique ability for a cruising dinghy - still a lot of room for improvement here.

    Great video, as always. Thanks for sharing your experiences and learnings with us. I was going to ask about the lugsail - you seem to prefer it over the crab claw even though it looks harder to shunt. I'm guessing because it's easier to reef?

      @@nandortanczos4956 oh i wouldnt say that i prefer it. Hmm, everything has advantages and disadvantages. I still want to try different sails. I figured i needed to go on a big trip with the lug to see how it did. I also did a similar trip with the previous crabclaw but i lost the camera at the end so it didnt become a video, sadly. I would definitely recomment starting out with a small crabclaw, for this boat 6sqm was a good size. (Which is my reefed size here) that was still plenty exciting when i was just learning. After i became confidant i could handle that in heavy conditions i made a bigger sail. Also with a crab claw brailing lines work to instantly depower the sail, apart from reducing windward ability they work really well and you can tap the brakes in the gusts

    That proa is a thing of joy, thanks for sharing your adventure. Although I can tell how fast you’re moving from the bow cam shots because of the spray, etc., the shots looking forward with the low angle gave a first person feel of the speed watching the wavelets racing toward you. Reminded me of being on a sailboard. I really appreciate your patience with launching off the beach, taking the time to observe wind and waves and work around nature instead of looking for an outboard or a tow to get you off the beach. Epic video Dominic, don’t reef just sail faster! 😂 somehow i don’t think ill ever average 6 knots. It’s really interesting how pulling your mast to windward makes the boat bear away more, is that because the crab claw stands up more (like leaning a windsurfer mast forward)? I saw someone suggested using anti torque cable as a sheet,i think actual anti-torque cable isnt ideal because its crazy stiff and i doubt the cover would be durable enough. I’d get a new mainsheet, maybe yours has a twist in like the cover/core kinda thing. Most dinghy sheets are designed not to twist, the Laser people put a bit of effort into making sure they use twist free ropes. Maybe you could also move the take off point on the boat away from the block so that as you sheet on it makes a slight triangle, so that its less likely to be twisted since it would take way more effort for it to do so?

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing 7 дней назад

      @@TomStuchberySailing thanks Tom! Because the mast is offset to windward, but the tack is at the bow, moving the mast to windward also moves the sail forward. And also looking from behind, the sail is more inline with the hull. Also since the boom is really long, just sheeting in and out also moves the sail area around a lot! Also shifting weight. Thanks for the suggestion, Ill look into how dinghy sailors maintain twist free lines!

    • @TomStuchberySailing
      @TomStuchberySailing 7 дней назад

      Oh yeah, that makes sense! And moving your weight back would do heaps. I suppose your boat is also kinda auto-depowering because as the windward hull and centreboard comes out of the water it might slip sideways a bit (although maybe the main hull still has heaps of sideways resistance?)

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing 7 дней назад

      @TomStuchberySailing the board doesnt come out until you've heeled *too much* but i do think that loosing grip in that case does reduce capsize risk. I tried sailing with no board when i first built it. I could point okay but made so much leeway that i couldnt make progress to windward (luckily i made it back to the beach i left from though!) The board on the ama also helps keep you beam on with the sail down, while reefing for example.

    This video pricked my ears up, it was as good as I could have wanted. I think your a bit of a kiwi hero here with such a challenge. This really is quite a feat to actually do what you have achieved. Whangarei harbour isn't easy to navigate with boats tides and sand banks. The footage on the end of bamboo pole is so great. Ha I'm a surfer (like all over NZ and overseas) looking at those waves and have a bit of a chuckle. I suppose you would jury rig if that mast broke. You can sleep on that platform which makes it a very good liferaft. Very good footage of the speed and the handling of the proa. Well done Dominic. It was a winner. Nobody else is doing such voyages so i give it a 10 outer 10.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing 6 дней назад

      @@rossbarnett3759 thanks for the support Ross, i appreciate it! Haha main hazard in whangarei is the shallowness and current, which is not a big deal when you float in 15cm of water with the board up! Its much easier to get in through the surf than to get out... maybe with a good breeze blowing along the beach. But so much depends on the geography of the beach (as surfers know, but i am just learning). Another option might be dropping an anchor omon the way in so i can pull myself straight through the waves

    To stop the mainsheet twisting you could use an anti-torsion PBO rope, the type of stuff that is used for the luff cable on a code zero. The trick would be to get one with a nice outer cover that is easy enough to hold without sawing through your hand!. The stuff is designed not to twist because if the rope just twists on the luff the sail doesn't furl.

    Wow. Wow. Wow. You were really, really moving there. That looks like it was incredibly fun; makes me want a proa of my own!

    Great cruise! It's unbelievable your boat was still there, as you left it after a month... Here, 24 hours and it's all gone. Amazing!!! Nice Shunter, reefed sail is very cool. Keep Shunting brah, Balkan Shipyards

      heh well it was quite difficult to get to that beach, part of why I picked it. the proa is too weird most people wouldn't know what to do with it. It's quite common in NZ to have dinghies chained to a tree etc, outboards do get stolen sometimes, but it would have to be something that's easy to sell to be worth stealing

      I think you mean the ama (float) the vaka is the main hull, aka is the crossbeams.

    What a great little adventure. It's amazing how fast you can get going when fully loaded (the boat, not you).

      yeah, it doesn't really seem to mind a bit of gear. I think because it's got a relatively wide hull, just under 12:1 ratio. A more skinny racing hull would sail faster but it would also submerge more as you add gear, which would increase wetted surface and slow down more than this seems to. I think having a second person on board is noticable but i've also always only ever done that in mild conditions so I don't know top speed 2 up
