UPDATE: met with someone today who has the Freespirits brembo upgrade kit installed on their Street Twin and they said it makes little difference at the moment, so keep this in mind before following my advice above. Apparently the master cylinder doesn't push enough fluid through to the 4 pot caliper, so you'll need to swap it for a Tiger 800 lever which also means changing the brake hose as the stock hose is too short for that lever.
Yeah I mean I assume they think the brakes are adequate but to me they need a really good pull to stop the bike. Just doesn’t inspire confidence
Thanks for your cool reply, and a factory released bike with brembo brakes, especially the quality control of Triumph, would no doubt be better than a two-bit mechanic installing aftermarket brakes. So your solution i must say is brilliant. Keep up your good work Motobob.
Cheers ET! 🤘😎
I am surprised to find only a couple of brands of braided hoses available on the market for this bike. And they are not cheap

The dudes basically in love with his old triumph and finding any reason to say why the new one isn’t better
Better brakes, more power (60 WHP @ 6800 vs 52 WHP @ 6100), more revs, flat out HP to almost redline, updated suspension. It's just a more live motor and with a 2 into 1, filter, and air fuel controller, it opens up even more. EURO 5 crap. I don't know how Bob can even say the update model isn't better or worth it.
THey have answered the customers feedback.Given it 10 bhp more (whether people actually need it on this type of machine ,the54bhp figure was most peoples gripe) Better brakes and suspension. I am buyng a Street twin next year and I will see what discounts are on the old compared to the yet to be released price of the new.If I can help it I do not want to be fitting a TEC cam or anything else, my spannering days on Triumphs/BSA/R Enfield are long gone.
Yeah will be interesting so see if the prices dip on the old model. Could be some bargains.
Street Twin 2019 is amazing ! So often I can hear more power, more power ! Sorry, if you need more power, then you are in the wrong movie and you should buy japanese Plastic-bomber !! hehe
I bought my ‘18 Street Twin back in January. It only has 300 miles on it so far. I fell in love with the sound and looks.
I’ve put on different levers, Rear Rack, Skid Plate and Front Fender Extender.
That’s it... keep it for ever!!!
As far as the ‘19. I like mine better.
Agree with you Bob this bike is all about the torque, which is highly practical around town. If you want bhp, (that you will never use legally) then buy a sports bike. I think the changes especially the brakes are a positive.
Yeah good brakes are important in town too, so I agree it would make the bike better for it's intended purpose! And agree that you can definitely get a much quicker bike for a lot less money if out and out HP is your goal.
I'm only a middle aged newbie rider, but I've never understood outside of racing around a track or the Isle of Man for a few weeks of the year, how 200 BHP sports bike riders manage to use anything like the power they have on tap. Certainly not if they value their licence, liberty or life.
I like this better then the scrambler.
Because the pipes are lower.
The scrambler's pipes are up high near the seat.
Makes it hard to add saddle bags to carry my stuff.
This bike is a better set up to do longer trips.
I am an old school Honda rider.
Most of the bikes i started out on was from the 1970s.
And this bike gives it that 1970s old school look, but a new bike.
I hate to get an old bike, and can't get parts for it.
The aftermarket Tec cam upgrade not only increases top end power but also increases mid-band torque by a very impressive 30%. Given this is where the bike is mostly ridden, surely getting the first model at a nice price then doing the Tec cam, suspension & 4 pot disc & hydraulic upgrades would totally nail it.
Yeah I’m interested to see a few more reviews of the TEC cams first though before I’d be comfortable installing them
More power, Better brakes, riding modes, still great torque etc, etc. Has gone from an entry level bike to a real big boys toy. Own a T120 and this may well be an awesome second ride. The peak torque is only up by around 250 and peak power is 7500 rpm for around 64 bhp, still not a revvy racer. Sounds like a machine that carries more power throughout rev range from go, and can handle long highway rides, mate has original one and he is always left behind on the big rides. Test rode the original only last month, can't wait to test ride this beast. Go Triumph.
Yeah can definitely see the street twin getting left behind on a group ride! Also looking forward to testing this new one
Love the look of these street twins, which looks like a perfect usable around town steed 👊 nice vid MB
Thanks for the review! It helped alot. I've been looking at the 2017 for months and found a leftover at a great price due to the age. I'm buying it today and will be upgrading the front brakes and shocks based on your review. Muchas Gracias! Safe riding my friend.
Happy to help! I spoke to somebody who fitted the brembo upgrade from freespirits though and they said it wasn’t very good so it might be good to look for another option
I like both, the older one, and the new design.
Triumph has done a good job making some nice bikes.
Hi Bob, nice video and some interesting points. Some people have been losing their shit over the new bikes, and i’ve seen words like "betrayed" being used which seems a bit much. As ever stats on paper and real word riding are very different as you said. Personally I'm not to keen on some of the new styling touches, but the addition of the Brembo brakes must be a good thing. I did think that anyone 'moaning' about the power of the original bike, probably bought the wrong bike in the first place, this is a torquey machine not a revvy racer. In fact I think people might be hard pressed to tell the difference in performance, as you pointed out peak power comes higher up the rev range, and the peak torque too. Take the first edition bike, lose some weight, change the exhaust and maybe the air intake and you'll have something pretty similar i suspect. From what I can see the TEC cam does a similar thing, but I for one wouldn't want to risk an un-homologated internal engine part (nothing against TEC) certainly not for the minimal changes. I'm looking forward to jumping on one however, and seeing how it compares....
Good points Tony. The new st isn't that good enough for me to do the "upgrade " I'm happy with my st. Like you said if people moan about the power then you bought the wrong bike to be honest
Agreed, if you were coming to it new, then perhaps it would be a better choice, in terms of an upgrade I don't think its worth it. Somebody actually asked me online if I was 'gutted' that the new one had come out? Err no, Two and a half years of ownership, over 10,000 miles and loads of fun, why would i be gutted?!
@@mancavemoto haha really .. Some people aye !
Yeah I agree! I sometimes even think that about the cams and whatnot. If performance the main thing you may as well just buy an XSR or something like that. Agree that the brembos should be good but like you I’d be keen to give it a spin to find out!
Yes i totally agree. ST is not a performance bike. I think most of the owners of this model doesn't buy for performance, mostly for the look of the bike just like me. I upgraded the brakes with Galfer floating rotor. 55 hp is enough for me as i ride this bike mostly in Istanbul traffic like Bob. (i had the previous 69 hp Bonneville model, i am more happy about ST's performance) Torque at lower revs is more needed. One more thing if everything is given as default on our bike how should we customize then?? :)))
I love the contempt you gave the Triumph guy, it's in keeping the way they treat their customers.
Great vid, as a Street Twin owners, it's nice to see some interest in it from the community. I for one am excited simply that Triumph have given it some more attention. I am in the camp of improving my gen 1, rather than buying a new one. Although, I do like the new side cover decal, and will be looking to into getting a set for my cafe build.
Cheers form the US!
Thanks Cameron. Would be cool to see how your cafe racer turns out!
I have no problems with the original front brake of my Street Twin 2016, but with the terrible tires (Pirelli Phantom). I have now exchanged them for the Avon Spirit ST and with it a completely improved driving behavior. If I had to force the machine into every curve beforehand, it now wants to go into the curves all by itself ... and it also feels much safer or more controlled.
Besides: I think the old 2016 StreetTwin looks much more stylish and rounder than the newer models. So the 10 HP more doesn't really lure me behind the stove.
Especially since I regularly drive the machine on the way to work on the Autobahn in Germany at 160km / h. And at this speed, the 55PS are not the limited driving pleasure for me but the wind turbulence of the car in front of you that you have to struggle with and tear at you.
To your comment on the braking, I have a T120 and found the front brake underwhelming until I changed the levers. I did not buy the Triumph ones, rather, I went with the inexpensive generic ones from Ebay that most other parts companies are just rebranding and they changed the feel immediately. I actually was able to engage the anti-lock for the first time in my driveway.
Interesting thanks. I also put some cheap levers on and felt an improvement
Great video @motobob! Been looking for a ‘first reaction’ video ever since the announcement for the new ST. Looking forward to when you can do a proper compare vid once you get to test ride! Btw, love the mods you’ve done to your bike so far!
Thanks Ryan appreciate it! Yeah a side by side would be cool - will have to find a dealer willing to loan me one for a few hours
Option 3 for me - getting the old bike and spending the money I saved on upgrades not only means that I get possibly better performance, but at a lower price, but more importantly, I get to make the bike my own. In any case, you'd probably want to swap out the shocks and cans on the new bike as well, so there's no real benefit there of buying the newer bike either.
I’d agree. That’s why I’ve stuck with my 2017 model
I like the new model just some sensible upgrades and a tweak on the styling. Always needed a four pot front caliper, hope they've put it on the Street Cup. Nice one Triumph.
Yeah I guess they’re all changes in the right direction. Will be interesting to see what they do with the street cup! Would like to see an update for sure
Lol mate could you look at the person you are interviewing while they are talking to you?
Edit: sorry the comment goes to the drivemag lad.
I had the same thought. Hahahahahah
As a new subscriber I like your style.
I went for the T120 because being of a certain age, the styling appealed and the extras seemed good value.
Riding two up the increased capacity and torque make themselves appreciated but like others have said you don’t buy Triumph twins for using high revs.
Thanks Roger! Yeah I think the 120 makes sense for 2 up. How do you find the twin discs up front?
When I test rided the first Street Twin, although I enjoyed its torgue and its instant acceleration, I did think that the engine ended a bit too soon. So a few more horsepower and a few more revs, sound just right to me. I know you won't buy such a bike for its speed, but it would be nice to be a little more comfortable when you hit the motorway.
So... how about that 6th gear that 's missing now?
My wife wants to get the 2019. She sat on it at the IMS Long Beach and felt it was lower and more comfortable for her 5'2" height compared to the 2018 model. I disagreed with her but she gets what she wants lol
Haha. Sometimes you’ve got to know when you’re beat
@Dubious Monk yes she was. But only the 2019 model. 2018 model she tippy toes I think it has to do with the contour on the 2019 models seat.
Hi Bob. I'm pretty new to motorcycle community. I've been riding from the past one and a half years but not on regular basis. Btw I'm from Mumbai.
My first bike was RE500cc classic. I learned to ride on it and bought it too to get myself comfortable with my riding skills.
Just a week back I bought Street twin and if I compare it bullet it's ofcourse far superior ,so I was kind of thrilled to take it on a long weekend ride. Did very well on the highway but in close spaces and traffic jams which are horrendous on Mumbai roads it wasn't a good experience for me. It went really hot ,since also it is brand new and not getting the space to move freely.
Mumbai traffic and roads are totally different to London roads and it's traffic.
Mumbai is much more challenging.
I also got the chance to off- road it and I was thrilled it did pretty awesome.
I do love the bike. Since I'm new to motorcycle riding I will probably get the hang of the pros and cons of this bike as I ride it more often.
I'm looking fwd to your valuable advice on it.
Though Your Video made me aware of quite a lot of things.
Hi mate! Glad you’re enjoying the bike - I love mine too. Just a word of warning on the brake upgrade i mentioned in this video. I met someone who had fitted it and they said it wasn’t that good, so maybe better to look for another kit.
That’s a shame that it gets so hot in Mumbai. I’ve had people from India and Thailand saying that it runs a bit hot. I don’t get that problem but it’s pretty cold here and the traffic moves ok
The gadget finally adds RPM indicator on it.
Best upgrade of the new Street Twin.
Yeah will be a great addition for sure! Shame they can’t fix the old bikes with a software update
Great vid! how tall are you? Concerned the Street Twin is too small for me (6ft) and whether I should go for T100 or T120 instead. Thoughts?
Had a test ride on the 'old' street twin two weeks ago and the front and rear brakes were awful compared to my XSR900 and the seat was to low; meaning legs bent more so, thinking of new 1200 Speed twin. Power wise the 900 was ok with me but the 1200 might be similar to my XSR. Was thinking the new Street twin would have more power lower down but you've the answer my question, 'no' and I don't ride at 7000rpm. Like your London riding style 'don't stop for anything' just like me :)
Thanks Michael! Yeah the brakes are the big disappointment for me on the street twin. They will stop you if you give the levers a really good pull, but it’s quite a heavy bike so it just needs a bit more bite for reassurance
Always a bummer when a new gen comes out. Didn’t expect it soon but also don’t view this as a major upgrade. Great little improvements as you mentioned. Aesthetics is a preference and can always be customized. Extra 10 PS available to those who feel they need it. But not worth the effort for me to even consider upgrading. Great review and thanks for sharing.
Cheers - yeah I agree that there are some nice little gains but overall no massive differences
Love the new bike, handles great, easy to ride, brakes are excellent and yes, when you interview somebody look at that person rather than staring into empty space with an indifferent expression....
I think the main issue with the T120's Brembo kit feeling underwhelming is it's quite a heavy bike. I loved the one I rode and thought the brakes were pretty good, but you can load up the front tyre rapidly if you're not careful.
I think the triumph modern classic brakes are gentle by design tbh. I rode a Harley Fat Bob a few months back and the brakes were far superior to the Bobber Black
I love triumph bikes. Any day I will own by god's grace. Love from India..

I have a feeling most of the extra power they're getting is from a slightly larger cam. If you put the tec cam in you may not see much, if any change if the cylinder heads, intake, exhaust, and displacement are otherwise the same. It's likely there's some incremental improvement in flow in the cylinder heads, but if Tec is correct (with the tendencies I've seen in regards to how these bikes respond to performance mods, I agree with their assessment. I think they're right on) then I would be willing to bet most of the gains with the new 900s are just in the cam. Larger cams with everytihng else held the same almost always results in higher horsepower specifically because you're moving the torque curve slightly higher. You could get more power without moving the torque curve higher with more displacement or more airflow (ie cylinder heads) but the fact that they have elected to move up the torque curve tells me that tec's approach to solving the power problem is exactly teh same as triumph's. Tec's cam and the new 900 cam are likely pretty similar.
Interesting! I wonder why triumph would say it’s come from lightening the crank shaft etc tho?
TEC say the camshaft is the limiting factor in the power output. Lightening the crank will just let the engine spin up quicker
Test ridden both versions. Liked them both but disliked the suspension and lack of top end grunt on the old one. Found the new version far more satisfying to ride fast - I live in a village with lots of quiet and fast A and B roads around. The new version feels safer. I still found the seating rather cramped though - dealer suggested trying the bench seat but I reckon a T120 seat would be a better option. It is on my short list......
How tall are you that the bike feels too small, if you don't mind me asking?
@@skymningforelsket1302 I'm just shy of six feet with a 31 inch inseam. But I am 69 and arthritic so knee bending is a literal pain for me. A Pal with the T100 finds that fine and indeed its ergonomics are different to the Street.
Thank you for the timely reply. I would expect the price to reflect the upgrades. Personally, I would be inclined to go with the older model and do the upgrades as you described. Functionally, the new model is better, but the modifications appear added on and do not seem to be in keeping with the original aesthetic "feel" of the bike. Cheers!
PS I do like your bike very much; you've done quite a nice job on it.
Thanks! Appreciate it. Got a few more changes planned but I’m pretty happy with how it looks at the moment.
I didn't see enough of an upgrade from the 2016-2018 street twins to replace my 2012 Bonnie. This new version will probably do it for me. I, for one, appreciate the extra 10 horses at a higher peak rpm. Should be a bit more assuring when passing those long ass big rigs on the California freeways. The Brembos and better forks are a definitely a plus too. Can't wait!
Yeah that makes sense when you’re passing big vehicles at higher speeds. Enjoy!
Nice review. I have a 2017 Street Twin and absolutely love it. I also prefer the original styling, but to each his own. The only thing I miss is a tach; what app do you use on your phone for that?
You need an OBD2 sensor which you can buy from amazon, then just search the App Store for OBD2 and there are loads of free apps. The one I used in this vid is called four stroke
Can this bike handle dirt or gravel roads?
Personally, i like my ST the way it is and apart from a few cosmetic changes i don't feel that it needs anything else. Engine wise, it has plenty of torquey real world riding power and if people think they need more power at the top of the rev range then they got the wrong bike. I think the rain riding mode is a good idea ( maybe it can be added ) and as Tony said, Brembo brakes must be a good thing. I may be the odd one out here but i rather like the new wheels....to each his own i suppose.
Yeah the wheels remind me of the harley iron. Not sure I like those either but plenty of people must do. So you’re right it’s personal preference. Totally agree about revving the engine - it’s not that kind of bike
I have mine for two years, and I most certainly gree (though those brembo thingies looks interesting…)
Awesome vid, good points too, was thinking about this the other day and I think you make some good points as to whether you would notice the changes to performance in the real world. 👍
Cheers mate. Yeah I don’t think it would be noticeable for me. That’s one of the reasons I haven’t really looked at the TEC cams either
You need a grom with a small sprocket for commuting. Save the nice bike for a weekend blast.
Grom would be a great shout for around town, but I’ve got a 10 month old baby so I don’t ever ride at the weekend. So in a way, the commute is my weekend! 😎
Yeah but if you rarely get above 40mph, why bother spending all that cash on a bike?
If cash was the issue, I could cycle to work 👍
The tank at 3:33 rocks !
Really like the Iron Stone paint on the new bike but, if I owned an original Twin I don't think I'd be rushing out to trade it in for a new model.
Yeah I agree that’s a nice colour on this bike. I’m interested to see how they price it cos all of the press coverage says TBC at the moment.
Great vid Motobob as per....Must admit the new ST was a surprise announcement to me, however, understand they need to update at some point. As an ST owner for the past two years (my first full licence bike). I love it. I have no intention to change it for a newer model. Yes the brakes are maybe a little dull, but if ridden how I believe it should, they are more than adequate. It's not a racer so riding it in that manor doesn't really make sense in my mind. Anyhoo, the mods I have done are purely aesthetics. The need to mod the engine/suspension surpasses me! The new bike will no doubt please any new owner, much as a secondhand first generation. I share the preference view of the retro first gen, the new has taken a more modern look but Triumph has taken on from what customizers have done. Having said that, still worth taking one out to be nosey.....!
Haha you’re pretty much saying the same as everyone else who owns one and commented here (me included): not worth the upgrade but will take a cheeky test ride just to check 😀
I've ridden every bike in the range, so hey why not! I'm planning some more rides on other manufacturers. I am looking for a sports bike next 😁
A H2R then, naturally! 😎
Ha, that'll be punching too high. I really liked the Ducati v4s, but again thats out off my league.....To be honest, I'm more than happy where I am now, so until those big money balls roll my way I don't see to much changing!
Haha join the club! 💸
I dont have a Triumph of any type at present but love the looks of the mk1 Street Twin more than the new one. I would go for a mk1 with the Tec cam and exhaust/airbox mod and supention with an upgradded caliper for the front end.
own a T120, nearly bought a Street Twin, until I took the girlfriend to the bike shop to show her what I was going to buy (fatal mistake) she pointed out the T120 and ended up buying that, she's my first proper bike and tbh it's ideal as a 1st bike as the power is not overwhelming, so making a 1200 version of the Street Twin is a good idea as it's ideal for someone shorter in stature
1200 ST would be cool for sure. I’ve got a ticket for the 1200 Scrambler launch so will vlog that in a couple of weeks time. Maybe they will surprise launch the ST too
Wow. That's a beautiful bike. I prefer the T120, but enjoy the Trumph's quite a bit.
Great video, I’ve been looking at a street twin for a couple years and the new gen has me hoping I can find a used 1st gen even cheaper. I was debating springing for a new 2nd gen but I’m feeling more confident getting a used 1st gen now for how I ride. Thanks for making great videos!
Cheers SS - appreciate it. Maybe the prices will come down in the next couple of months. You could always take both for a test ride to see if you notice the upgrades
True, true. Keep up the motovlogging, you've got a great demeanor for it. I'm from New Orleans so it's fun to see what it'd be like riding in other cities around the world. Hit me up if you're ever out this way.
Thanks man!
No way ! New Orleans is full of vampires ! (Yes, I'll get mee coat…)
Great video, as others have said, raising some interesting points. Unfortunately, I sold my Street Twin only because of its lack of long distance (motorway miles) touring ability. I do regret it and would probably by another in the near future. I think people get a little hung up on the power thing - forget the BHP figure of the old bike, all the fun is had under 70mph where the meat of the torque is. They may have spoiled this on the new bike, but I guess only a test ride would find this out. Oh, and it sounded brill with the Vance & Hines pipes!
Cheers mate - yeah I love the V&H pipes too. Have been thinking about a decat too but I think it'd be too loud for practical day to day use. I've only done a couple of long trips but I'd agree that it's not a great motorway bike
@@motobob It can't be as bad as trying to overtake a lorry doing 55MPH on a dual carriage on a 125cc bike ! I have to give my (soon to be finding a new home) CB125R advanced warning in in writing that I want to try and do 70MPH . It's still never managed it . The "optimistic" speedo claims I've done 68MPH top, but a GPS app talking in my bluetooth headset says more like 64MPH.
WE ALL KNEW THEY COULD GIVE IT WAY MORE POWER WITH THAT ENGINE......BUT WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO GIVE IT A 6TH GEAR?????
6th gear would definitely be a big help on the motorway. It’s revving too hard at 70
ossa60 - A larger front sprocket would be a much cheaper option .
I've said to several people that the only thing I wish my 17 street twin had is a sixth gear. MotoBob keep up the good work!
Thanks GK! 🙌
Yep, they could easily give it even more horsepower and the 6th gear is already in several other models, should be simple as well.
I have a 2017 matt black street twin what a great bike it is, in day to day use I think there would be little difference. I ride to work everyday and enjoy this bike so much 👍
Mine started life as a matt black too! I agree there's prob not a big difference
Not really interested in the bike so it's not an issue either way for me, I'd still have a go on one of course. I still enjoyed the vid mate, really well thought out and put together, top job.
Cheers HR! Yeah I appreciate not an issue for everyone but got quite a few ST owners subbed now so thought it might be of interest
@@motobob oh don't get me wrong, the video is still interesting to watch for those who are not likely to get one.
Cheers mate! 🍻
Well I guess we’ll have to wait for the proof of the pudding, but the changes have piqued my interest. Good job on providing these details @Motobob, thanks.
Thanks Ayan! Yeah I’m looking forward to testing one too
Great video. Thanks for your works.
I definitely have to wait for the new model then. It has all the upgrades I wanted to do on the previous model. Brakes, suspension, power. So I won't risk the warranty with any mods on the new model. Great news. :)
Yeah if I didn’t already have the first gen bike I would almost certainly wait for the new one. Although they haven’t announced the price yet...
I guess it will be a bit more. But can't be that much or they would lose buyers to other brands with modern classics. Or buying a T100 instead.
True! It’s been their biggest selling modern classic apparently so I guess that has something to do with the more accessible price
I really like your side panel cutouts, it looks good.... and I got a hole saw in MANY sizes....
Great review. Good information and super production overall, WELL DONE!
Why no tach again? I know there were plenty of complaints about it. And yes, that extra 10HP isn't where anyone will use it except maybe cruising at 75MPH on the Interstate/Freeway. Side panel looks even uglier to me as do the the new wheels and wish they would have added some other color options. I really like the better brakes, assuming steel brake lines will help out a bit.
Thanks HR - appreciate it! You’re right about the panels. I really don’t like the new ones but it’s each to their own
I believe there is a digital rpm for the new twins. For me, that extra 10hp, higher rpm & brembos, are exactly what I want for the highway speeds. Cheers.
The definitive upgrade will be with the 1200 engine... and with a bit higher seat! Looking for that!
Yeah I’d be super interested in the 1200. Not too bothered about the seat myself as I’ve got short legs and do a lot of riding around town, but I can see how it’s cramped for some riders
my main reason for the newer version of the bike.... the sound!
Hi Bob.
Do you think the Street Twin is a good first bike?
I'm 40 yo, and love the style of the ST.
Totally! It’s such an easy bike to ride and has traction control and ABS. The power isn’t too much at all, but there’s enough for it to be a fun ride. It’s not the lightest bike, but the seat is low so you can easily flat foot both sides 👍
@@motobob Thanks! Continue with the great vídeos!
Thanks Paul! 🤘🙌👍
I'm concerned with my "newbieness" and the high torque at low rev of the ST. Nothing like a test drive to evaluate the bike I guess!
You have to take a little care at low speed in the wet but the torque isn’t that scary at all
Regarding the Triumph PR chap at 1:40 in this video , don't know if I'd say the iron stone paint scheme is "sophisticated" . I'd personally say "war department camoflagued" . I prefer brighter colours, that hopefully "Stevie Wonder" non-bike drivers might see. The only bright colour available on the 2019 Street Twin is the red . They could do with making a white or metallic sky blue version. I guess the tank could be repainted, but then there's the painted on Triumph logo to do ...
Good stuff, MB!
Thanks mate! 🍻 😎
Hows the reliability of these bikes? Do you find yourself missing the tachometer?
I haven’t had any problems with mine. The tacho isn’t a big deal to me as you can ride on feel and hear the exhaust note. All the fun is in the torquey midrange so you just twist and go
Another great video lots of detail, excellent!
Cheers SG glad you enjoyed it 🙌
Well, they can keep that grey. I need color and a proper Triumph badge on the tank!
Just buy the TEC Cam shaft and pay for it to be fitted , you have the same power as the new ST without the expense of trading in and buying the new one ..
Good idea batman !!!!!!
Suppose it’s old news now that the front Brembo brake on the ST 2019 is HUGELY better than original 2016 Nissin front.
Hi Motobob - great video. Would you mind sharing exact details about the chin setup for your GoPro. Was a big hard to tell the exact parts, but I'd like to replicate. Thanks!
I’m buying my first ever bike this year (spring time) and I’ve always said I’m going to buy a Suzuki SV650 as it’s a good price for a reliable straightforward naked and not a hyper style naked that the other Japanese manufacturers churn out. But when I saw the street twin it has definitely turned my head, but practically, out of the 2 which do you think is the better first bike? Disregarding the price difference of the 2.
Hi mate. The SV will be a bit quicker I think - more power and lighter. The seat is higher too, so your height might affect your choice. The Street Twin is a bit more of a relaxed torquey retro ride. Better in the city as the torque is low down and the seat is low so it's easy to flat foot in traffic.
MOTOBOB Thanks for your reply. I’m 5’8 but short legs 😭 I do like minimalistic styling, and I’ve sat on a new SV and it was a good height and I could almost flat foot (literally a couple of mm to be completely flat to the floor) it’s more of a toy to me than commuting so power wise doesn’t need to be fast, I feel like I’m talking myself into a street twin 🤷🏻♂️ but I would love to go on bike trips through the countryside in summer once I’ve got a bit more experience riding under my belt.
I feel for once I can be qualified to answer this so here’s my two pence; my first big bike being an 05 semi faired SV650, second and current being a 17 plate Street twin!
I’m 5’9.
The SV was a great introduction to biking, especially twins with that great Vtwin sound! It’s forgiving enough and not crazy power for a new rider. That being said I didn’t gel as well with the sports bike stance-sometimes my wrists went numb and arms ached an hour into the ride. Same thing for your bum with the length of time (I tend to travel distances-don’t usually do short blasts). The only thing I miss it for is the screen for motorway riding, and the top end speed in the same environment.
The Street Twin on the other hand, wins at everything else. Comfort, ease of use, length of time you can sit in the saddle. The sound is amazing on those stock pipes. It just puts a smile on your face. I’ll be honest and say I’ve had to lavish way more attention on chain maintenance with this bike than the SV-not sure if Triumph’s initial coating is crap but I recommend cleaning it off and covering it with a different substance straight away. I didn’t and live in a damp area-I had rust appear on the chain and only the chain within the first 1-2 weeks and 3-4 long rides. That and I tweaked the clutch lever adjustment for my shorter reach and it made the clutch slip at times whenever i revved hard-reverting to factory setting has resolved this. In order to make the clutch lighter they used really light clutch springs and the design of the basket uses both these weaker springs and ramps which work under torque to bring the plates together under load-seems the lever adjustment stops the ramps from working effectively. But I’ll adjust the actual cable length in the future.
I’m still very much in love with this bike a year on-go for it!
Ps Motobob-I love the changes you’ve made to yours, very stylish!
Thanks for taking the time to write such a useful comment! And I appreciate the compliments on the bike too. Agree with everything you’re saying about the street twin - it’s such an easy bike to get along with and the torque and sound definitely put a smile on your face
Paper and practice can differ. There was some weird green flickering starting at 10:38 on this video.
Ah man!!!! Thanks for the heads up. Must have happened in the render or upload. Too late now I guess...
@@motobob Yeah, I've had some rendering issues when I look back and I just say... meh.
@@LadybugAdventures I thought my phone screen died.... With that flicker.... I immidiately stopped watching the video. Then noticed it was the video and not my phone. Lol.
Yeah the thing is If I reupload it, the people who’ve watched this version won’t click the new one so RUclipss algorithm will assume it’s just a shit video. There’s a lesson tho to always watch them through before uploading!
Ah sorry manan!
I have the 2018 and I love it. It's perfect for me. It also gets 63 MPG every time.
Damn! 63mpg is good. I get about 45 in town with all the stop-starting. What sort of riding are you doing?
@@motobob I'm 15 miles from every small town around me and I avoid the larger town like the plague.
Here I am a year later and now the bike is getting 67.5 mpg every time no matter how I ride it. Amazing!
great video motobob there is still no rev counter still! I just like would like one
Yeah it’s crazy. Like I showed in the video you can do it with an OBD2 sensor and a phone, but that’s a bit of a pain in the arse to do it every day
There's one on the scrambler, though no one seems to be aware of this…
Nice vid… Love my ST to bits and I've done long rides with it. But what is the brand of the 500 quids front brake you mention ? I missed it (English is not my first language…) I'd like to trade for a custom-made saddle, glad to see I'm not the one to find it unconfortable after a few hours on it. (I'm not just getting bloody old…) I wonder if the new engine will be as frugal as the (not so) old muckster, I can ride more than 300 km with a tankful !
The brakes are a kit from freespirits. I dunno how good they are though because the brembos on the bobber black weren’t that good. I head that the master cylinder is so small on the street twin that it doesn’t really make a difference
Okay, thanks mate ! I'll look for other options (maybe other pads ?) The brakes are still better than on my bonneville !
I’ve got some EBC pads to install so I’ll post a video when I do those
In the immortal words of Marvin the Martian : oh, goody ! ;)
By the way i have just subscribed looking forward to more of your vids cheers
Awesome!
Someone at Triumph seems to have missed the point of retro twins. Many buyers of this kind of bike don't give a toss about 'modes'… or indeed lots of power, as long as there's enough… and liquid cooling is something I've heard others being put off by (I love my brother's air-cooled Thruxton). They want the look, the feel, and all the good bits of old Brit twins, like torquey response, unsophisticated but agile handling (though this was more of the premise of Norton and BSA in earlier days… hence Triton and Tribsa specials being built), but without the vibes, crap brakes, poor lights, and dodgy electrics… and of course, they want an electric start as we're none of us getting any younger.
The stylists have also jumped on the current matt paint and satin metalwork bandwagon, which along with the modern looking graphics looks too 21st century on a sixties'/seventies' style retro bike… as does the instrument and switchgear look. Don't start me on those awful cast wheels… The Lester style wheels that appeared on the Hinkley twins a few years ago were bad enough (the cast wheels they emulated from the last of the Meriden twins looked awful back then too… and weighed more than wire wheels).
Maybe Triumph should take a step back, and offer something closer to the new twins from Royal Enfield… Even without the huge price difference, the authentic feel of the the RE was the deal breaker for me, and other RE owners I've spoken to… despite the extra power of the Triumph. It's the attention to detail, like the clocks that look like sixties' clocks, without fancy surrounds and logos and with warning lights that are only visible when lit (all my BSA had was an ignition light… My Commando had just oil, ignition, main beam and indicator warning lights IIRC). The simple switchgear, combined with un-lacquered polished aluminium cases finishes the job (black wasn't a thing on most Brit engines, apart from the barrels).
Hi Bob, what if this 2019 Street Twin compares with T100 black? They have the same 900 HT engine with different frame.
The T100 doesn’t have the upgraded power and brakes as far as I know. But it looks more retro with the spoked wheels etc if that’s your thing
La street twin me gustaría aún más si tuviera ruedas con rayos como la boneville. Exelente moto
All bikes are excellent or they wouldn't be in business. Just buy one and ride. I've had several brands except triumph and moto guzzi. Currently ride a a hd m8 road king. I luv this brand didn't think I would? They are pretty cool. A excellent dealer network. Its unlikely I will ever buy another brand. I still like guzzis and triumphs, but dealers are too scarce for my taste...
I agree with what you’re saying - most bikes sell at least a few thousand units, so they must be good to someone. I think it’s just about finding the right bike for your own tastes
Surly if you want more power you just buy the t120?
The T120 is over £2000 more ! Plus an extra 26Kg .
Great vid’, very ‘Pro’! Personally, I’d go new... Then add the cam from Tec 😉👍🏻 Better stoppers too 😎
Cheers CG! Yeah I'm wondering if the cams will fit the new bike or lead to any improvement. Haven't seen anything from TEC yet but I guess they haven't got their hands on one...
Cloggsy Goodwin
Brakes are great.... as long as you upgrade hoses and reservoir (come on, people replacing Brembos and leaving stock rubber hoses? Are they on drugs?)
And the 2016 street twin ? Still good or not ?
Still a good bike! I’ve still got mine.
It’s going to be mi first motorcycle in a minutes thanks from Miami
The red tank at the start of the video looks really amazing, I hope Triumph will propose it in option !
It’s just for the show I’m afraid. It was commissioned by a street artist called D.face - he’s into bikes and has a shop called Rebels Alliance in east London.
@@motobob Thanks for the Intel, that is a shame... Guess I'll have to either do my own paint job or order it aha
Nice video mate, I have Kawasaki W800 is better looking bike no doubt but has les less power than street twin and pretty shity breaks too, sound of triumph is better than Kawasaki. Is like u was saying to buy use bike and upgrade but to do that all upgrades including dino, will cost you more then 3000£ so question is, it is worth it to spend that money. That why I will go for Yamaha xsr 700 which sounds great have more power and better breaks and is fun, or safe more money and buy a Speed twin which is 98bhp, sound amazing and looks sexy.
A great video MotoBob.
Cheers TO - appreciate it! :)
Nice Review. I liked the new instrument panel design , new wheels , side panel design. 10ps increase in power : not needed , but OK I will say. ROAD / RAIN Mode is a much needed addition. 4 piston BREMBO brakes : Fine l say. Matt Ironstone colour is nice. But I feel the old street twin colours & some other new ones also should be on the offer. The brake fluid reservoir & the slim handlebar does not match the look of the bike. Should be similar to T 100. Or I personally feel there is a space for a T 90 between Street Twin & T 100, with handlebar, brake fluid reservoir , Instrument console & grab rail of T 100 & 12 Ltr fuel tank & exhaust pipes of Street Twin.
Hi Bob. Thanks for your insight on the new machine Street Twin.
It's great and useful video.
Initially I felt like a shit when they announced new ST because I bought mine 17 ST just last year and now I saw this new machine came out.... however now when I see reviews from others and more I understand the updates I am feeling much better about My bike and not feeling shitty any more. :)
I guess it's not much worth the upgrade. Good that Triumph listen to customer like us.but I am sure the price they are going to set up would be much higher and may not be worth upgrading. And I completely agree with those additional 10HP which is practically of no use. Lol.
It would have been nice if they provided with RPM indicator. Can u pls tell me what app u use to see revs? And how you do it? Is that accurate?
Thanks Bob.
Yeah you’re right they haven’t announced the price yet, but with improved forks and brembos it will almost certainly be higher than the £7,800 they’re asking for the first gen bike at the moment. I don’t feel cheated - they’re trying to make it better based on all of the feedback on the first bike. I think it’s really cool that they’ve addressed all of those areas.
For the revs you need to buy an OBD2 WiFi or Bluetooth device and it just plugs in under the saddle. The app I used is called FourStroke but if you search the App Store for OBD2 there are many others and a lot of them are free.
Most indeedy !
I do like this bike, but i will be going for the 1200cc engine Triumph.
The speed twin looks pretty awesome!
I've never ridden one, but I don't like the sound of peak torque being 800 rpm higher.
Yeah I’d agree - I thought low down torque was the whole point of this motor, otherwise why tune a 900 for only 55hp? But maybe it’s not that noticeable on the road. Hopefully I’ll get to try one some time
Seems like over analysis. I’ve ridden the previous generation Street Twin and it looks and feels great. It sounds cool too. I might buy one when I can pay cash.
I hope to pass my DAS course soon. Assuming I do , I don't know whether to get a Triumph Street Twin , Honda CB650R, Suzuki SV650 or maybe a Yamaha MT-07. Any one tried all of the aforementioned machines ?
I can only recommend testing them all once you’ve passed your test and choose the one you like the most as it’s a really personal thing. But that said, my choice would be the street twin for style and character, or the MT-07 if you want the best ride for your money in terms of speed and handling. Perhaps the XSR-700 would be a good compromise for you?
@@motobob I do like the look of the Street Twin. My Dad had a mid 50s Triumph Tiger 110, and the Street Twin has a similar look, so a lot of this is probably down to my memories as a little boy back in the 70s ! . I hadn't looked at the Yamaha XSR-700, now I have I still prefer the Street Twin look . I guess the Street Twin's price tag that's several thousand more than a Suzuki SV650 is a bit off putting . As you say I need to try them. So far one dealer for the Honda has said to get a test ride I'd need to have had my A licence for a year ! So not sure I'm going to be able to try any of them ...
Thanks , and excellent reviews !
That’s a shame but understandable from the dealer’s perspective I suppose. Japanese bikes almost always offer the best value for money, but maybe a used approved street twin would do the job? I got mine from a dealer with 4K miles on the clock and it was still in warranty, but it was a couple of thousand pounds cheaper than a brand new one. To me the triumph feels slightly more premium than the SV so that’s probably something to do with the price difference
@@motobob I passed Mod 2 !
I'm probably going to get a 2019 Street Twin the better brakes appeal right now and maybe in the long run I'll want the extra 10 BHP.
My wife sat on a Street Triple with the high pillion seat and didn't like being so high up , she preferred sitting on a Street Twin and a Bonneville. The Honda CB650R and Suzuki SV650 (like the majority of modern bikes) have similar high pillion seats. Plus I really like the classic Triumph look . I don't mind the look of the CB650R. I'm sure the SV650 is a good bike , I'm not a lover of the trellis frame look.
There is also a lot of appeal to me having a big torquey 900cc engine. After all the gear shifting to get a 125 to move the idea of not having to change gear so much appeals. Although I'm sure the CB650R and SV650 will have more than enough power and torque for my current riding ability.
Now all I need is to get a test ride, it sounds like my closest Triumph dealer doesn't have the restrictions on new riders like the Honda dealer.
I love classic bikes but I think the 900RS beats Triumph in performance.
Talk to me about this versus the street scrambler. Why get one versus the other, any thoughts?
Scrambler has spoked wheels, slightly taller stance, high level exhaust, and the pillion seat can be easily swapped for a rack. I believe it’s also tuned to be a bit more torquey. But the street twin might be preferably if you want a lower bike and it’s a bit cheaper
Sounds good. Thanks Bob! I really want to know how easy it would be (I live in Washington DC) to get a satin/matte black paint job on my tank if I picked up the new Street Scrambler. I despise that khaki green/silver combo. The white isn't bad, but I want to black mine out...Love your Street Twin btw, its awesome!
Thanks Rob. Maybe you could find a Matt black tank from the first generation bike and swap it out? Could be cheaper than getting it painted, especially if you sold on the new one 👍😎
Agreed. It sounds like the Street Twin tank could also be used...like on Dutch's Scrambler build (dream bike btw haha).
Come on Triumph ,this is 2020 used to ride your bikes many years ago, they look now like the design is in the 50's, good machines but wake up to this century please, and be recognised and selllllll,
Hi , for most of the people is easier to buy new bike then buy use one and tune up. Cost you much more sometimes, and take a time . But we newer gonna catch up with that new better model right, is like with the new smartphones buy new is better, few months later is coming new one and is better , buy buy spend money. You wonna real deal buy old one T100 or Kawasaki W800 and u have beautiful power twin aircol proper oldshool bike. 👍👊💪
Looks like riding across blackheath 4mins in?
Yeah!
They should have added a 6-speed transmission
Definitely agree!
@@motobob doesnt need it as the engine has enough torque
How did you get the RPM on your smart phone?
Buy an OBD2 adapter and connect to your phone. Search the App Store for OBD2 - there are plenty of free apps 👍🤘
A Motobob video, yeah sure, it's not like I have work to do :)
If it were only up to the mechanical specs I'd go new but personally I'd prefer going for a second hand one and then, like you did, add my own flavour to it. I bike isn't your own until you've done a mod, even if it is just a sticker :)
Haha work can wait! Yeah I'm not the sort of person who can just buy a bike and ride it stock. If I was going to, the new bike would be the one. But you're right that making your own changes really makes you feel like it's your own

Hi, have you done a video with pillion yet? I've got a choice between a Low mileage Newchurch or low mileage 2016 street twin , both same price. Seems you get so much more for your money with the street twin. I'd be taking my wife on the back sometimes.
Not done a lot of 2 up riding on this bike but taken my wife out a handful of times and it’s pretty decent. She liked the seat although would prefer it with an aftermarket grab rail. I’d see if you can take them both out for a spin?
@@motobob I managed to test ride the street twin yesterday at my local Triumph dealer, Absolutely fell in love with it. I should hold on for the new street twin...but they did offer me a good deal on the the current model.
I’ll bet! How much off?
@@motobob £6600 brand new 2018. That's £1200 off !...maybe ask for a centre stand........bench seat haha
Sounds like a decent deal!
With all of Triumph's current 1200cc offerings, this would be the last bike I'd buy.
Yeah the 1200s are great if you ride out of town but I wouldn’t really use the extra power. Got a ticket to the launch of the 1200 Scrambler later this month though so will vlog that for sure
Well, it is if you can afford one of those buggers…
Vastly, vastly more expensive, and they're around 25kg heavier. The weight does make a big difference.
Yes, I had some top-heavy bike and don't want to go that way again, even if I could affort it !
I use every bit of my t120s power around town no problem
Does your tank have a custom paint job?
Yep! Check out my previous vids for more info
