  • This tutorial builds an arpeggiator. Starting from the idea of cycling thru each note that is held down, we investigate pitch control via signal, domain scaling, pitch quantization techniques, building a change-detection circuit, and tweaking phase and timing for a stereo arpeggiator. Approach building in The Grid like any sound design task - start with a known target and find unique ideas in the journey.
    NOTE: Project file with snapshots and bonus content available here - www.bitwig.com...
    0:17 - Common arpeggiator controls

    Hey bitwig team, just wanted you to know that your tutorials are what tipped me over the edge to purchase bitwig studio instead of ableton. Great videos, great daw, keep it up!

    I'm a pretty experienced hardware modular fan but this video series has taught me so many transferable skills. Thanks for posting them. The grid is incredible. So flexible but so approachable, and actually a lot less of a headache than my eurorack gear. And the fact that you can just make things instantly stereo is outstanding. To think of the hell of cables that would be necessary if all my eurorack patches were stereo!

      It has quite simply changed my workflow, thinking around audio puzzles and I use these ideas regularly in my Degree classes as 'brain ticklers'. So much love and respect to the BitWig team. All the way from Australia!
      Peace.

    I purchased BitWig yesterday and I want to dive so deep into it...BTW for those looking for a smart use of REX Files in BITWIG I bought Reason Intro and use Reason as a Vst in Bitwig....also a Ton of nice Refills as a sound source !

    I love how intuitive and fun The Grid is - how easily creative you can be with it. In comparison, other options for virtual instrument creation like "Reaktor 6" or the free "HISE" take you out of the creative mindset and into more of a programming mindset.

    I see some thumbs down so I'm probably not alone here. Almost followed this one, but there were so many twists, and turns. Perhaps you could stay on topic, with a basic straightforward build, and then embellish after we have a solid foundation? I for one would appreciate it. Thank you for this one though.

    I have an issue where the arp trigger starts from the last note I played, i.e. when I play a C triad, if the E was the last note I pressed, the chord will become an E triad. Do you know how I can fix this?

    WHAT ABOUT FREE MODE IN REGULAR ARPEGGIATOR????? I recently switched from Ableton to Bitwig, the only thing I miss is that amazing functin I use a lot for "bouncing" sounds in sound design :( ...
    Also the amazing BEAT REPEAT....but it's another question and at least I created something that works similiar with devices...
    Anyway, GREAT DAW ....it has the modular workflow I was looking for

      what does the free mode arp do?

    • @tomasciccola
      @tomasciccola 4 года назад +1

      Not quantize to bar the frequency, instead use hz (or ms?). In this example is as simple as changing the timing of the LFO, I believe...

    • @ethnikLSD
      @ethnikLSD 4 года назад

      @@tomtabak free RATE mode, sorry....I use it for sound design. Image you have, for example, a sample and you want it "bounce"....I set the ARP in free and work with milliseconds. Or I add one, set it to a high rate and have some "granulizatio" via MIDI....
      I'm really disappointed that the stock arpeggiator don't have this simple and so useful funcion...it's my bread.

    • @Manish-py8ot
      @Manish-py8ot 4 года назад

      @@ethnikLSD I could be wrong, and I'm new to bitwig, but I think you can achieve more precise rate control by adding a macro modulator. Set the macro to bipolar and then connect it to the arp's rate. If you set 100% of the macro to add 6 to the base rate you can get the full range of rates. You can then modulate the macro itself with any other modulator. Too bad the control is not in ms. I think the arp rate ranges from 0 (1/1) to 6 (1/64).
      To add to this, most quantized or categorical options have more continuous control under the hood. So for example, even the shape control in the arp is actually a number between 0 and 7 and thus can be modulated.

    >>> Propaganda destroys greedy people. The program is anachronistic, old DOS style. It is very
    heavy on quad-core processors. It does not use the super fast memory of graphics cards. Prices from
    space. This means that the company has a small manager. I do not recommend this program to
    musicians ! I recommend clear thinking ! Greetings from Poland

    • @NeonPLotus

      William Meisburger-Iwata I act like they barely put out educational videos at all, because they barely do
      I’ve had bitwig since the 2013 release, and there’s devices I still don’t 100% know how to use, and the HARDCOPY manual is no help what’s so ever.
      Guess it pays to be one of their friends in Germany, huh?
      And they wonder why people still stick with logic, Ableton, studio one, cubase, FL Studio, and even protools. And protools is an exercise in masochism. It’s painful to use. And even then, still preferable to bitwig.
      Think about that.

      @@NeonPLotus There's plenty of educational videos out there, put out by Bitwig and by others. The vast majority of devices are pretty straightforward. I know how to use them and find it has better workflow for me than the other DAWs I've tried. It might not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't make it mysterious.
