Love John Wick reference, but let's go back to Pesci in "Goodfellas". I always carry a tough titanium pen, along with an Olight Baton2. The light is awesome, plus it is hidden in the fist for a little more 'umpfh'. Those darn quarter rolls just weigh down the pocket. Also carry my trusty Mannix2, as well. Awesome video!!!

I'm not going to lie. I was involved in a situation some years back before I got my LTC. During that encounter I was looking for any sharp or pointy object to use. So the pencil is not even funny to me. That can be a real weapon and not to bescounted when you find yourself in a life or death situation and have nothing but your hands.

Great video Jeff. I especially appreciate the notion that there is no "one-size-fits-all." What I choose to carry typically is dictated by what I will be wearing that day. I'm a physician, and 3 days a week I'm wearing scrubs all day. Two days a week I'm wearing a shirt and tie. Those present extremely different situations for choosing EDC gear! This is one reason why I have far more holsters than I do pistols! BTW, I LOVE my P365! But sometimes I'm constrained to have to carry my P238 (along with a spare magazine or two).

I appreciate the thought and mention of alternatives, backups, etc. I know one thing I struggle with is that I'm fairly often in areas or spaces which are restricted on what they define as weapons, and that can be a hurdle. A lot of vids people make on their carry solutions are just going on about how their big high-capacity is super under the big untucked shirt-jac they wear all the time or showing off their latest toy. Discussing a wider array of options for being armed without appearing to be "armed" is very helpful.

As Jeff says, "it depends". I can range from a full size 1911 to a Keltec P3AT. However, the vast majority of the time breaks down to either a Glock 19 or a S&W 442. If the situation allows enough cover garment, then the G19 gets the nod. If it's less cover, then the 442 goes with me.

Excellent, well-thought-out video with a helpful perspective.
I'm certainly no Navy Seal, but I do think most people drastically overestimate: 1) the continuity of their situational awareness; 2) their endurance and (functional) physical strength; 3) their draw stroke to first shots on target time; 4) their accuracy under duress; 5) the time they will have to get a gun into battery; 6) their lack of need for an on-body tourniquet and other medical supplies; 7) their capabilities in the realm of practical combatives and grappling; 8) their ability to, suddenly, remain calm and in control in highly stressful, life-threatening circumstances for which they've never really trained and/or with which they have no real-world experience; 9) the fairness of the judicial system in genuinely justifiable uses of deadly force; and 10) their emotional and psychological capacity for dealing with the reality of taking another human life - no matter how justified (legally and/or morally) it is.
I think EDC really has to be rooted in mindset. And I really like how you have made mindset a cornerstone of this video. To me, it's, "I will stay alive." Then, from there, build up the tools and on the skills to maximize one's ability to ensure that happens.

My holster helps me greatly with my everyday carry decisions. I use a belly band. The weight of my gun is supported by the belly band it's not supported by the pants or the gym shorts or whatever else I might be wearing. it keeps the gun right where it belongs 100% of the time. It doesn't need belt loops or belt clips or anything like that that is going to show to the outside world. That way I can wear any clothes I want including completely formal attire for a wedding. And nobody will be able to tell that I'm carrying.

  • @Harleywindtherapy
    @Harleywindtherapy 3 года назад +4

Man, you got it...but not surprised. I was 4th ID. Pretty much agree 100%.
In '08 I started carrying as a civilian. Glock 26 has been with me the whole ride. G17 back up mag. Bought the G43 thinking I'd like it, but can't justify giving up the double stack 99% of the time. Both of my kids weddings saw me with the G43 though. I did stash 2 extra mags in an ankle holster.
The winter sees a snubbie with a concealed hammer in my coat pocket when it's a heavy coat kind of day. I can have a hand on it, no one the wiser. I did sacrifice a coat once to test firing from the pocket. It's fine but my accuracy beyond contact distance was laughable.
M-F I work in finance (my own company, but inside a NPE office park.) I carry the 43 in a single pouch smart carry in my suit and tie. (Same as those weddings...like you said, gotta think thru things) and the G 26 rides in the outside pocket of my backpack/briefcase with the back up G17 mag inside the bag. I had the bad customized so it holds the G26 perfectly with a quick draw flap over the pocket feature. The 43 in the single pouch smart carry and a spare 43 mag in a pocket never print and who is looking at my crotch anyway. I wish, but I'm married and all...
I bought .40, .45, .357, .380, even .32acp handguns but I wanted easy to find ammo if i needed it in a hurry. I also just shoot Glocks and 9mm pretty well. (Spare glock mags and both 9mm and .38 special ammo in my go bag.) Mostly those other guns just sit except for some range visits. After Sandy Hook I really just shoot 9mm and then quickly over restock that ammo quick as I can find it.
I tried the CR123a lights from Surefire...really loved them for about 5 years...then I just was over buying/trying to find batteries for them and moved to Streamlight and fenix for AAA lights. They aren't as powerful, but I use them more and batteries are everywhere.
I hung a HAK knife on my dog tags for about 10 years. I still have it, but took it off this past summer and never it back on the dog tags for some reason. Maybe enough time being a civilian had passed... maybe. Fixed blades are in all my bags and have one sewn into a coat.. but I mostly use the Leathermans now. Skeletool clipped to my pocket (even my dress pants), the PS4 is on both my Wrangler and Harley keychains, and Juice CS4 is in a little EDC pouch I never seem to be without (spare contacts, emergency glasses, and readers as I get older all need to be with me or at least close by in my bike or vehicle.)
The Skeletool would help in a force on force encounter to further the impact of my strikes if needed I suppose.
It all really does happen faster than I ever believed it could. And seems like always it happened from nothing. Then the world went hot in an instant.
Cell phone, wallet, keys, flashlight, gun, spare mag... these are the basics for me every day. A giant tub of holsters ensures I can carry about anyway I can imagine...and I have some I admit I ordered and never unwrapped. Weak Google-credit card moments I guess.
Off work I live in sweats or gym shorts unless I'm on my Harley. Smart Carry holsters allow me carry the G26 and the G17 back up mag constantly no matter what I am doing. I've nodded mine with a kydex insert (helps em to last longer too) and with 12 years of carry now... I'm about as fast as any IWB.
On the bike, with jeans and a belt, I use a Sneaky Pete. It hangs in the open and no one has ever said a thing. Ever. Tons of rides, rallies, touristy things in foreign cities on Harley trips. I have 2 back up Sneaky Pete's but I have ridden 40k miles ridden and 5 years with the G26 in this one and it shows no wear really. It was nice to get it out from IWB on the bike too. Safariland horizontal mag holder for the back up mag. This combo works with just a t shirt, or I can add my patch vest (usually do) or any hoodies or coats.
I was attached to the marines for awhile...they played as hard as the 4th ID, but never had the pleasure of working with the seals. Always heard good things. Your demeanor speaks volumes to a guy like me. Thanks for the video too.

The Glock 19 and S&W M&P 9c where my primary guns for the longest time. As I got into my mid 6o's, my back and hips just did not like the weight for a long period of time. Seems like a 25 oz or lighter firearm loaded was the right weight for me. The Glock 43x fits that bill. 24oz loaded with 10 round mag. I'm aware of the SA 15 mag but that adds weight. Works for me.

I can comfortable carry those IWB appendix, both when I'm working out wearing a velcro Bravobelt and with a tactical belt. I also carry a flashlight and pepperspray, and several pens, and a working cell phone. I'm relatively new to firearms, was born and lived in Europe for most of my life where nobody carries unless you are cop or military.

The hot summer days are most challenging especially when out exercising and if you know what to look for those guys with fanny packs are amusing.

Great point regarding the carry fitting the dress instead of the dress fitting the carry. I have several different firearms I carry depending on the time of year and the clothes I am wearing. I have also started to expand my non-lethal to functional tools that can also be used in a situation where I can't/shouldn't draw.
    Thanks for the great video.

I love this video. He's being very realistic and honest about EDC. I personally have a glock 19, glock 26, glock 43, and airweight S&W revolver. They are all tools. The bigger the better, but sometimes you have to adjust what you carry to what you are wearing or doing. As far as knives, I always have a pocket knife for daily use, and usually a ring dagger horizontally on my belt to use as a fast access get off of me so I can pull my gun weapon. If I'm carrying a low capacity small gun around the house in a pocket, I also have hidden larger capacity guns that I can access quickly.

Good advice. Thinking first always helps. This reminds me of the press conference that Donald Rumsfeld gave during the Iraq war. He was asked a question and just stood there. After quite a bit of silence, the reporter asked the question again and Rumsfeld said, "I want to engage my brain before I engage my mouth." Smart. Like you, I've found that "it depends" definitely shapes what I'll be carrying.
Thanks for taking the time and thanks for fighting for us.

Good thoughts. This general concept is how I've been thinking about EDC for a while now. I have a baseline of items that I always carry, and I have a "wardrobe" of guns depending on what I'm getting into. I rotate between an M&P 2.0C, P365, and M&P Bodyguard, and sometimes carry a combination. The Bodyguard is nice in the winter since I can move it between pants, bibs/overalls, or a coat, in addition to a gun on my belt.

I wish I could just download Jeff's brain and upload all the relevant bits for self defense. Instead, I really need to go down to The Range and train with him some more. :) Thanks for the well thought out video!

I carry the exact same 2 pistols, my p365 with a 12+1 mag or a p320c with flush mag and a hyve extended mag for a 18+1. Same thing depending on weather or situations that I may encounter I carry accordingly
