What Are Gourmand Fragrances? | Oriental Fragrances vs Gourmand Fragrances
Today it's all about what are Gourmand Fragrances? What's the difference between Oriental Fragrances and Gourmand Fragrances?

I think it enters gourmand territory when it’s a fragrance that’s using food or beverage notes and the end result is to emulate a food or drink or make it the main focus of the composition.

Good topic! Some fragrances definitely cover both oriental and gourmand categories. • @justaddlight

So is the gourmand formula basically a factor of (vanilla) + (sweetness) x (food notes/florals)? As in, non-sweet fruit notes without vanilla (ex. citrus aromatics) don't equal gourmands, but vanillic bases with citrus tops (AHS edition Blanche, A Sweet Pastry in Paris), or basically any other note would be - as long as the sweetness outweighs the rest? What about ulta-sweet floral ambers like Lapidus' Altamir? Or is vanilla the deciding factor like in Gaultier Squared, even though they smell very similar... I'm definitely analyzing this too much 😂 But certainly interested in perceptual boundaries! Because right now my only deciding factor is whether it smells like food or drink. 😂 But then again.....what about fragrances that smell like herbs or vegetables? 🤣

I love Sleek Suede, maybe my best perfume buy of the year although Patchouli Ardent and Coromandel give it stiff competition. By itself, for me, I don’t think it goes quite into gourmand territory. I do get a very dark, black cocoa note from it but that note is almost too bitter and dark to seem gourmand but sometimes I layer Sleek Suede with Molinard’s Vanilla Patchouli and the addition of vanilla and chocolate like patchouli take the combo over the line into true gourmand land .

  • @raulsaavedra709

Gourmand I understand to be mostly related to sweet and dessert-like flavors, not just edible in general. Spicy fragrances (even if all edible spices) when they lack the sweet aspect don't bring to mind gourmand, to me at least. Same for boozy fragrances: drinks are edible after all, but boozy fragrances if not sweet or desert-like enough might not bring up "gourmand" (again, to me.) 4711 was allegedly actually drinkable (read that somewhere, not sure if it still is, at least the originals apparently were) but it would hardly be called a gourmand just because of the citric and fruity notes. (I wouldn't even call it boozy anyway.) Yet it is/was literally edible/drinkable. By that criteria alone it would be a gourmand, wouldn't it? The wikipedia entry for gourmand fragrances mentions however food notes completely unrelated to sweet/sugary, like lobster and pizza. I guess smoky "barbecue-ish" fragrances might also be gourmandish?

In my mind I think of gourmand like dessert specifically, or baking to include things like bread; pretty much something smelling like food that you need a recipe for. I don’t really lump fruit in with that or else would you call a monkey a gourmand for eating it’s banana? 🤓 However adding cooking spices, booze, or buttery, nutty and milky ingredient smells to a fruit note can make like a fruity gourmand, like how apple pie doesn’t smell like fresh apple note but like it’s recipe. But like I said I wouldn’t count any fruit as gourmand just because you can eat it. Then what about herbs, vegetal notes, wine, spice... when does it end? It’s about the recipe. That’s my mind. 🤷‍♀️ I have to go back and watch your orientals video to learn more about what the definition of that style smells like.

    Great topic to raise Sebastian,
Gourmand is a French word and if you consult the French Dictionary Larousse, it actually means a person who enjoys eating good portions of food items. Over time, we started saying “Gourmand” for inanimate things such as perfumes and drinks.
So, the simple explanation of a Gourmand Perfume is one that has noticeable edible quality; which can be sweet, savory or fruity.
Per se, resins, woods and alcohol are not “Gourmand” notes. If they are in a perfume with other notable edible notes then it is a different story. Example is Vetiver Royal Bourbon from Oriza Legrand, has Bourbon but I would not say it is Gourmand. Palo Santo from Carner Barcelona clearly gourmand (milk and sugar) possibly cloying. There is a grey zone though, things are not black and white. Great topic again.
    Spread the Fragrant Love

So how I define a gourmand? Something that smells like food and is SWEET- so Crema dI Latte....that is like a sweet pastry or cake, then I call that a gourmand because it smells like food. Just because it has food notes, I don’t call it a gourmand....for example, I smelled Mile High the other day, which has pineapple. I don’t call that a gourmand. It has pineapple. They key is sweet and foods and leans towards a food smell. That too me is a gourmand. So, if it has cardamom and spices, I put it is the spicy category unless it is sweet and edible and like food.

Can we stop using the term oriental? It doesn’t feel good coming out of my mouth. Am I alone in thinking this?! Can’t we call it the amber family? I heard that’s the accepted term now and I’m all for it, cuz oriental never hit right imo.

@@brvndxxxn it’s not really over saturated, though. Did gourmand fragrances come along and completely replace every other type of fragrance out there? Are you struggling to find non-gourmand scents out there? No, of course you’re not. And nobody is holding a gun to your head forcing you to wear gourmand scents. Wear whatever you like and let other people enjoy what they like.

Sebastian, why are your followers harassing me for not loving gourmands? They can comment as well as I do. But I don’t bully them into being obsessed with my preferences
