I'm from the middle east and I'm so proud being from UAE and seeing how much we improve the whole world taste of fragrances makes me even more proud.. It does not matter what other thinks of the middle east region if they take it from the media it doesn't mean that it's true
You know that gragrances were found by the land between the rivers, the world's first recorded chemist is a woman named Tapputi, a perfume maker whose existence was recorded on a 1200 BCE Cuneiform tablet in Babylonian Mesopotamia
Thank you so much for the video! I think the word oriental is beautiful because it carries in itself a meaning of something uncommon, rare, hard to obtain, the desire to experience the unknown or only imagined, a mystery, a discovery perhaps. When I hear the word oriental, I get excited! 💯 Oriental perfumes are my most favorite too.
Original Poison, opium and Coco ....by Chanel.....loved them back in the 80s ...still love them today ..I also enjoy a good overspray too......go heavy...or go home
When I hear the word "Orient", it conjures up mystery, beauty and adventure. I don't understand why people associate it with racism. P.S. I am Orthodox and our church is headquartered in Damascus.
In the United States, the word “oriental” has been used to mainly describe Eastern Asian people as a way to make them seem exotic or different. This attitude unfortunately contributed to Asian-American immigrants being ostracized and oppressed in American society.
Oriental-spicy, and oriental gourmand are my favorite two categories also as represented in my own collection. :) Great video, as to your question about video length - I like the shorter videos, as I find at about 30 minutes I start to become distracted by my own thoughts, or other people, other things happening around me. The only longer videos I watch are generally RUclips 'live' videos in which I'm actively chatting with the other viewers and the host(ess). I'm familiar with most of these except for Oud for Love and Rose Omeyyade both of which sound like scents I'd enjoy. Thanks again for the fun topic and video!
@Smelling Great Fragrance Reviews Yes Sebastian! I love longer videos! I have noticed when fragrance reviewers speak of mint notes, they never seem to specify what kind of mint it is. Is it spearmint, wintergreen, peppermint, or a combination? Take care of yourself! Lisa
Great video. As an Asian-American woman, i think "oriental" should never be used to describe a person, BUT I don't find the word to be offensive if it is describing a fragrance or a rug. Great video. I'm really enjoying these olfactory category videos. This one is my favorite so far.
I’m glad you mentioned Oriental…I’ve been conflicted about whether this is acceptable to use in the perfume context. If someone is not familiar, I don’t want to offend them.
Just all stars ✨ Sebastián, outstanding! Finally we got the different co, profumo de Firenze and the amouages, I want to recommend you, amouage overture man. Thanks 🍀🇺🇸🎩
I also love to overspray and I've never got any bad comments only positive compliments 👌 I prefer 6-10 sprays...only Ex Nihilo Amber Sky is when in do 4 sprays 💪 Great video ✅
I don’t how inconvenient you are but I will definitely contact some day when I started my perfume line. You are one hell of a person when it comes to the perfume world. I love a knowledgeable person. 🙌🏽
Fantastic video! Great idea to cover all the fragrance categories. I really love Oriental fragrances.I have oriental fugere(JPG Le male essence), oriental spicy( V&R spicebomb extreme and CK shock for him) and oriental woody(Tom Ford noir extreme and Trussardi riflesso). Really love them, even the entry level CK shock. Maybe the fragrance category with the most sexy perfumes.
Deffinetly the amber will make all these fragances last longer and have this feeling that stays for ever, but i picture Oriental like spices to cook heavy, the red pepper used in Mexico is brutal, for example, that is My idea of course your example are súper fragances
The Dreamer is my favorite Versace cologne also! There’s a new Fragrance from Atelier Versace called Santal Boise…I got a few samples of it & have worn it twice, I’ll definitely be buying it !
I love Orientals and I see nothing wrong with the term Oriental. All things need categorization otherwise we have no idea what we are buying. I'm not political but I like things orderly and succinct. Ok enough rant lol I love over spraying. As I've said before you're the only reviewer who I watch because your preference in frags is 90% of what I love. Have a great weekend.
I am an oak moss freak, so any fragrance that's heavy on this scent is yummy to me. I even burn multiple oak moss candles in my apartment at the same time. Fougeres and Chepyres are my favorite fragrances. My second favorite note is myrrh.
Oh gosh I keep looking and looking on your videos to mention what has been a 5 star classic. Originally formulated by Lancome in 1978 is the completely bewitching Oriental Floral Magie Noire. It was reformulated in 1986 and that one was my favorite version. I was just a child when I smelled that one. The notes in that one are incredible. They then reformulated it again in 2005. I don't know why they did THAT. Anyway, please let me know what you think about it!
Oriental is definetly a broad group of fragrances. The only one I have that is definetly an oriental is Zoologist's Camel (unless you count Guerlain's Encens Mythique or YSL's M7 Oud Absolu orientals). When I think of orientals, my mind goes to spices but also to a feeling of warmth and fuller scents. Anyone has any suggestions on very weird, experimental orientals, I'd love to hear some suggestions.
Great video! Just working through my sample of Rolling in Love and will definitely get a full bottle! Amazing! Also like these types of videos, just under 30 minutes but wouldn’t mind a longer with mixed themes now and then.
The term oriental is also used in traditional medicine of the east, in fact the main governing bodies in many parts of the world are associations of Traditional Oriental Medicine.
There is definitely an aroma crossover with Oud, it's one of my favorite notes I'm exploring right now and I generally love/prefer oriental composed fragrances.
I love oriental fragrances, they are my favorites, along with the chypres. Are you familiar with the perfume J"Ai Osé? To me, it's the quintessential floriental fragrance, absolutely beautiful!!!
my fav fragrance ever was discontinued and called Valentino V. It’s description included oriental. God I loved it and have never found anything that compares :/
When the term was coined it was common to refer to "the Orient" and things and people from Eastern regions of the world as "Oriental", but that usage is super outdated these days. Since it was a name given to huge, diverse regions by Europeans without much knowledge of the cultures they were talking about, "Orient" now has a connotation of ignorance and old-timey colonialism. So you'd never use it outside of a perfume context, or a historical context, these days. That being said, I don't know of anyone who has expressed being offended or hurt by the term in a perfume context? Keeping my eyes open for that in the future. Edit: I know this is knowledge you probably already have, Sebastian! Just commenting for anyone who is curious. 🙂
Excellent video Sébastian!! we are starting to get used to it!! ;-) Oriental fragrances are not my cup of tea, i prefer Aromatic fragrances... anyway, i own Montale mukhallat and i must confess that this stuff is incredible...wild Strawberries and sweet Almonds combined with Balsam from Peru and Vanilla ...yes, it smells like "Doll-Head", but in the good way, at least for me.... it's extremely long-lasting and project very well, as usual with Montale!
Strange I never see Fragrance Reviewers talk about Givenchy Pi, it's the scent that made me fall in love with oriental/vanilla. What are your thoughts on Pi?
I loved Opium for Men. Why they stopped making it is sad. The bottle's I've tried recently are Old and seem off. Any cologne still made that resembles?
New subscriber here..Did you like the original Fendi by Fendi.I loved that oriental fragrance..I haven't found something like it..Do you have any tips for me on how to find a fragrance like that?
Sebastian, have you tried Jean Paul Gaultier's "In the Navy" by any chance? I'd like to hear your thoughts about this fragrance, but I know you concentrate more on niche fragrance reviews. Would this flanker be considered an Oriental as well?
Ahhh, fragrances. I so much enjoy them on both man and woman... My husband is only 42 years old, and he doesn't like fragrances. Old Spice.. English Leather...Old Spice...3394 East Thomas Lane, Coeur D'Alene Idaho...82815....As for me, my choice is Jean Nate Concentrated Cologne Spray,..Please send some,
I've never understood why anybody would be offended by the word "oriental" it's not a slur it's an actual word. I get that the "proper" term would be "Asian" but technically oriental basically means the same thing. My father once had to attend a "cultural/racial sensitivity" seminar over using the word oriental to describe an Asian man. Given the context of how he said it there was nothing racist about what he said. I think the racist association comes from the fact you mostly hear it from southerners and my father does have a southern accent. So in my opinion the racist connotation really just stems from the preconceived notion that southerners are racist by default.
As far as your videos are concerned, the longer the better. Seriously. The idea of answering numerous questions in long videos is great. One of my recent favorite floral orientals is Fort & Manle Fatih Sultan Mehmed.
Only commenting this since you said to share our thoughts. I dislike the name, since it does stereotype. The "Orient" is a huge, huge area spanning so many different climates and cultures. What do China, India, Egypt, Yemen, Iran, and Lebanon have in common culturally (not counting any political issues) aside from being some mysterious, exotic places which conjure up thoughts of piles of spices at a market? For that matter, Morocco - Al Maghrib - means "West," but it has inspired some scents which would be called Oriental - East - (e.g. Leau du Desert Marocain, or Bois Marocain). While spices are very common in these different countries, something like Neroli Portofino, Tea Rose, or even Colonia Club, smell more like what I grew up smelling with than something like Opium (in itself a pretty messed up name). Declaration - orange, cardamom, cumin, coriander, cedar - is about as Levantine as you can get. But oud? That was only an instrument to me until like 8 or 9 years ago. Vanilla? I got that from Haagen Dazs, not basbousa. Nonetheless, although I dislike it, I don't really care about it. I even use the name since that's what the category is called, so whatever. And I love the fragrances. I guess it's safe to say Edward Said wasn't a fraghead, since I could imagine he'd have had a field day with this name.
Someone just implied, to me, on Facebook, that the word "Oriental" is offensive, even for this perfume category. Is this true? I didn't mean to be offensive. Yikes.

Loving the daily vids Sebastian! Things must really be tough there in San Francisco with the Coronavirus. Stay well! Lisa
I love this series! Also, the longer video format for questions sounds like a great idea. I would definitely watch.

Thank you so much for the video!

In the U.S people in the past not as much now used/use it in a derogatory way towards people that’s why

Ooh oriental is so offensive...not.

Dior has another amazing oriental vanilla and flower, its Dior Addict.

Thanks. More of these types of videos. Oriental fragrances are the only kind I own.
I’ve always loved oriental frags, too. I need to try Unknown Pleasures now that you mentioned the lemon!

Dear Sebastian, Thanks for making a video about Orientals and different categories. I love dark woody fragrances. Thanks a million

The term oriental is also used in traditional medicine of the east, in fact the main governing bodies in many parts of the world are associations of Traditional Oriental Medicine.
great idea for a video series- because I get confused sometimes trying to pinpoint frags.
I use & think of the term Oriental as a high complement, not at all as an insult or negative in any way
You are the epitome of the fraghead😊
I would love Q&A vídeos yes!!!!!
"The oud craze is the new oriental" - Frederic Malle.

How would Vetiver Oriental and Incident Diplomatique compare with each other?
They are so completely different. Might have to do a comparison video?
That was overspray? Hahaha. Since covid started Im all in....15-20 or dont bother. 5 on the neck, 5 in the hair, 5 on each arm.

Is vetiver oriental sweet? I saw reviews saying it is sweet
It has sweetness since it's an Oriental but the Vetiver tones it down yes. But truly it's a balance of both! :)
Your videos seems always too short, so just make them longer. 🤗
