Sorry, but I can't watch this video, the RUclips CEOs decided to get really obnoxious with their anti-ad blocker campaign, if I were you, I'd delete all my videos and move to a new platform.
I always appreciate the Japanese workmanship and attention to detail. I prefer a rosewood or ebony fretboard, but aside from that, I really like the overall look of the guitar.
For the first time in a while. I actually like the basic colour of this Tele. The white/chrome, almost reminds me of the White Lightning Tommy Thayer signature from years ago. Very clean looking. Nice one Trogly.
I hope you can get your hands on the new Scandal Strat as well, that one looks a lot more interesting. Double-bound slab body, custom humbuckers with engraved covers, C to D neck shape. All of the Scandal stuff has been really cool, but this new Strat seems pretty special.
Unfortunately it's been confirmed that the ''new'' Mami Strat is simply the recent Modern HH Stratocaster which, until the signature model was made, was sold at a lower price. The Mami version simply has one knob removed (hardly worth paying extra for), there's a little more yellow added to the paint (shouldn't cost any different), and though the pickups have those engraved covers, the actual pickup underneath is identical to the old ones. So there's no point in anyone reviewing the new Mami version, really, because you can just look at previous reviews of the non-signature version; everything about how the two models feel and sound is identical. Made in the same place with the same parts, just a _very slightly_ tweaked appearance. It's a shame because Mami's previous red Strat was actually unique in the Fender Japan line-up, or at least they hadn't made a strat like that since the 80s, and her Squier signature jazzmaster was totally unique. It seems like she didn't really need a signature model this time around, she was happy using the regular Modern HH Strat, but the other two were getting new signatures so they made the tiniest of changes to Mami's guitar to turn it into a lazy 'signature' to complete the trio.
Not having the back binding like the one before with the gold biding really takes away from it, and was a bad decision in my opinion. Still a really cool guitar. I agree with Trogly a pearloid pick guard would've really awesome too
Pearloid markers on maple board will age so handsomely! I wish Fender did pearloid dots on their replacement neck options. I have a Gibson from the 70’s and the pearloid fret markers on the maple is one of the most attractive aspects of the guitar. Fender missed the opportunity to make the side dot markers cream or pearloid. And yes, I vote for a pearloid pickguard too!
at 9:37 "it doesn't have any contours"...? Maybe Haruna builds Strats too? They have contours, and stuff. This level of quality is over the top. I wish I could play that well............
Fender Japan makes insanely stable necks. I have the previous Mami Strat and even though it's traveled across the world and gone from a few years in hot Japan to now living in cold England, and even after I put much heavier strings on it than it had previously been used with, the neck still refuses to shift. It doesn't care about temperature, or humidity, or string tension. It's simply rock-solid and as straight as a neck can ever get. I've had multiple custom shop guitars which were far less stable than this. Headstock adjust would be better on paper, and if I could have bought a version with that I would have, but in practice it does not make a difference when the neck doesn't ever need adjusting anyway!
Great guitar for a wedding band. It doesn't come close to sounding like that Black Guard custom shop Telecaster. And by the way are you keeping that custom shop Telecaster.
YES! And I love that Mami Jazzmaster! Thanks for this thorough review and demo (aren’t those capacitors .0223 uF though?) really enjoying your playing 😎
Fender could have used the typical Gibson selector switch. The Gibson Studios use the typical switch and they are 1.75" and still has 3/8" to spare. So the slight bit of carved top material on the LP does not play in the difference. Less than 1/8" difference. Therefore, Fender uses what they feel they need. And with an elongated switch opening, there is a slight bit of weight savings.
I love these! I actually have all 3 of the Scandal signature models from 2014! I sold the US president of Yugio Cards a NOS skullcaster. Recently bought a 2014 skullcaster a week ago...
I agree that either a pearloid or ebony pick guard would set off the top nicely, although I think a small one would do. Now I want to see that Jazz bass…Edit: I liked that little tune you jammed on with your looper pedal!
Probably won't order one( I only have 5 Telecasters) but I figured anyone who can get Fender to make'em a signature model is worth putting an ear on. I LIKE them! 😎
As a Fender player, who loves Telecasters, these are beautiful instruments. I kinda like those Troublemaker Strat head stock. I say Bravo to Fender Japan
This might be one of those rare occasions were a matching headstock doesn't work for me. Head on it looks good but once the maple sides are visible it looks weird. It doesn't look right too me. Two ways I would've done it. Firstly keep the face of the headstock natural, make the whole neck match. Second paint the back of the neck white as well. Make the whole guitar white with the maple fretboard it would look good imo. Minus my thought on the headstock this is a good looking guitar and sounds great. Did prefer the previous signature model but thats just me. That Squire "Skullsilver " is pretty tasty too.
Usually not. Just loosening the bolts a little bit is often enough to angle the neck upward to get to the truss rod. However, you don't really need to worry about it because Fender Japan install their 'heel' truss rods a bit differently to Fender USA, and they're much more stable. So you don't need to worry about lifting the neck if the truss rod never needs adjusting!
Maybe the toggle switch is a feel thing? You could probably fit a short frame switch rather than the usual LP long frame switchcraft? I never tried one myself but I assume the L frame, short and long frame all feel different from one another due to mechanical design difference?
Hey Sarge, Chloe sounds like a very smart pup with excellent taste in guitars! She probably gets that from her daddy.😊 I like white guitars too actually! I really like the relics that Fender does with white on the top layer, then some kind of burst underneath that’s showing…with a mint pickguard and cigarette stained knobs and pickups (I’m picturing a strat actually)…😂. That’s really the only kind of heavy relic I like, and I’ll never be able to afford one of course. That’s my dream Strat. 😂 I’ll shut up now buddy! Take care! 👍☺️
I recently bough a red RIchie Kotzen Strat from Japan, it's 2016 and used but it was so clean I couldn't find any blemishes. Take full advantage of the yen to dollar conversion if you want to buy from a Japan store.
You have to import them from Japan. (Bear in mind you'll have to pay VAT + customs fees + usually some kind of courier admin or handling fee.) I imported one of the previous Scandal guitars-which was the same price as this one-from Ikebe-Gakki. Their website has an English option (top right corner). You can't just add one to your cart, but there's a specific international contact form on every product page which you must use. They'll then e-mail you with a shipping quote and time estimate, and once you agree to that price they'll send you an actual invoice to pay. They have a lot of staff who speak English very well. Once it arrives in the UK you will then be sent a customs invoice; I had to pay £140 total for my similar guitar, but you should be prepared to pay £200 or so to be on the safe side. FWIW Ikebe-Gakki were the easiest and friendliest company I've ever imported from.
My Trouble maker tele would be 24,75 scale, 12 inch, natural back and side. This one, the fretboard looks strange because it's not flush with the body. I don't prefer vintage 7,5 radius, because I like to bend and it's hard to set up a guitar with that radius, it will choke out if u do big bends(if the set up is not done well, not saying it can't). 7,5 is awesome for chording. But I like the HH configuration. I will put Ibanez AZ dynamix switch to get more sound. But overall, it's a wellmade and beautiful axe 👍
Pretty 2022 Haruna Signature Tele, vintage split tuners are the best, USA pickups sound great. But the buried truss rod screw is just silly for a 2022 model, why not some access? And the mismatched pearloid binding versus glossed fretboard inlays is a lost opportunity. Your good idea of a glossed natural back might have solved this if they glossed the binding.
I really dig watching gear videos and reviews, but it's not super common for me to lust after new guitars like I used to when I first started playing. But I love this guitar and would do horrible, shameful things to get my hands on one.
- Made in Japan instead of USA - Clean white finish - Regular Tele headstock - Not a bunch of signatures all over the guitar - A lot cheaper to buy So it's just an all around better version of the Kingfish? Nice.
I really like this guitar…. Minus the whole HAVE TO TAKE THE NECK OFF TO ADJUST TRUST ROD!!???? WTF? On a “signature” ?!!! That seams entirely crazy to me…
@@robertcampbell7662 true but all Fenders vintage reissues still have them so this guitar simply got a vintage style neck. It makes for a cleaner look with the matching headstock.
@@chrisburch3808 I get the whole vintage thing but it absolutely removes from playability… it removes a whole bunch of the demographic from buying this… unless you know setups and feel safe removing a neck every change of season or every time you turn your air off and open the windows …their not going to sell and I’m pretty sure that’s the whole point of signature models
Beautiful guitar! It probably has a green hue to the binding cause you were wearing a green shirt! Figured that one out once myself wearing a high vis jacket lol
Fender, please, make the Trouble Maker Tele Player series based off of the US ones with a maple top and burst already! Please let it be with a regular Tele and have the truss rod access on the headstock
I like the looks of this guitar but there's a few thing's that I would change. I don't like the placement of the truss rod for a start. I'm betting my luthier would charge double to adjust it. The 7.25 radius isn't really my favorite, either. I think a 9.5 radius would make it a bit more comfortable to me. I love Fender guitar's but I would probably change out the pickups with Seymour Duncan. I can't comment on the price because i don't know what it amount's to in U.S. currency. I would probably buy the Japanese made modern Telecaster first because they have better options.
I thought that, then I caved and bought one of the previous set of Scandal guitars. Turns out the way they make these maple necks is much better than how the Mexico and US factories do. They use a slightly denser truss rod (more stable) and around it they cut out and flip over some of the wood, so the grain is going in opposite directions along the length of the shaft. It makes the whole neck extremely stable; if one part of the wood wants to bend one way, the other part will want to go the other way, countering the shift and keeping everything straight. Additionally, on the ones where the fretboard is separate, they don't just cut it off the same piece of wood but take the fretboard from a different blank entirely, ensuring that has even more mismatching grain from the neck stock, ensuring even better stability. The Mami Strat I have here has gone from humid, hot Japan in late spring with 9-40s, to cold England in autumn with 10.5-48s and not needed adjusting at all. It hasn't shifted a single fraction of a degree. I've had US Fender Custom Shop, Gibson CS and ESP CS guitars with necks that needed more work than this one; the Japanese Fender is as straight and stable as necks ever get. So, yeah, I'd prefer it had truss access at the headstock just to be on the safe side, but the reality of these guitars is Fender Japan know how to make a very stable neck, so it shouldn't put you off buying one if you like everything else.
If it wasn't for the binding I'd say it had more to do with a charvel copy than a Tele still cool tho, and they should have put the ezy thumb dial type truss rod perhaps
Just look up reviews of the Modern HH Strat, it's the same guitar. All they did was paint it a very slightly different shade of aged white, take one knob off, and engraved the pickup covers. It's a _slightly_ new aesthetic, but all the actual hardware, wood, electronics, shaping, how and where it's made are all identical. Fender saw a chance to charge more, so they discontinued the standard version and made the signature one with the most minimal changes.
Hey Austin! you should check out the Fender La Paloma, made by Ron Thorn... Those are the perfect crossover between a Les Paul and a Tele! No doubt it deserves a full review
If nothing else you reviewing obscure Japanese signature guitars does lead me to check out an interesting array of Japanese bands. Discovering Millennium Parade is all thanks to you Trogly.
Pretty guitar indeed. A bit curious why they placed the truss rod where they did , a personal spec thing I guess but what a pain in the ass if you needed a slight adjustment. Pure white is not my cup of tea but I do like the neck. Nice show Trog!
My 90s CIJ Jaguar has that, Stew Mac sells a heel end truss rod tool, essentially it’s a flat bar with bent ends at two different angles to slot into the adjustment nut for these. But with that overhang for the 22nd fret, it might not fit firmly enough.
Fender always puts truss access at the heel if the board radius is 7.25" on a 25.5" scale guitar. Only Squier have ever done 7.25" radius with headstock adjust on a Strat or Tele; Fender have only ever done it on 24" Jaguars. It's just one of those silly things Fender get hung up on. I've even had the Fender CS directly tell me they wouldn't accept my order specifically because I wanted vintage-size frets and the modern contoured heel, and they plain refuse to combine certain modern and 'traditional' specifications like that. If you look at Warmoth, they do the same thing, because it's part of their agreement with Fender. Warmoth categorically will not make a 7.25" radius neck with any truss rod design or access other than vintage single action with heel access. That's just what Fender demand.
hey Austin , may i asK a question about your video , is you or editor slightly speed up whole video but playing domo ?? it sounds talking little bit fast and hurry, is cut out all the space word between word..? just for curious, its not a negative comment.
During the transition with fender coming back to the US in the early 80's there were some amazing Japanese strats out there. I owned one that I still kick myself for letting go. This doesn't really sound like Tele, more like a Tele wanna be. Those dc's sound kind of weak. The neck pick up had some cool clean tones. I haven't looked but I bet it's overpriced because of the artist model thing. It is a beautiful guitar, I'll give it that.
I'm not much of a fender person but I do like that tele Something about the telecasters I do like but I just don't care for the other style that fender has sorry fender fans I'm not trying to take anything away from your instruments I personally don't like them I know they're good I know they've been around for years I personally don't like fender not saying they're not a wonderful instrument because we wouldn't have some of the amazing bands that we have today if we did not have fender like Pink Floyd that's all they use is fender Jimi Hendrix that's pretty much all he used was fender so I know in the right hands they are amazing instruments so no hate no hate I just personally don't like them that's all but for this telecaster I think it looks very good and I would honestly buy one

This guitar sounds awesome with distortion.
Nothing beats the Evangelion Asuka Telecaster.
Looks really nice
If it wasn't for the binding I'd say it had more to do with a charvel copy than a Tele still cool tho, and they should have put the ezy thumb dial type truss rod perhaps
Excited for the eventual Mami strat videos would be cool to see both of them if possible!
Very nice bro..I dig it .
Hey Austin! you should check out the Fender La Paloma, made by Ron Thorn... Those are the perfect crossover between a Les Paul and a Tele! No doubt it deserves a full review
That thing should have been called "Les Tele" 🙂
If nothing else you reviewing obscure Japanese signature guitars does lead me to check out an interesting array of Japanese bands. Discovering Millennium Parade is all thanks to you Trogly.
Have a listen to Aldious, BandMaid, Gacharic Spin / Doll$Box, Rie aka Suzaku,...
I’m starting to prefer HH Tele’s to the traditional ones, this thing is beautiful.
My favorite tele type hands down.
I want these Trouble Maker Teles to be 24.75" scale length. They're awesome
Pretty guitar indeed. A bit curious why they placed the truss rod where they did , a personal spec thing I guess but what a pain in the ass if you needed a slight adjustment. Pure white is not my cup of tea but I do like the neck. Nice show Trog!
Traditional, not really curious.
That is an amazing Tele. Both looking and sounding.
I’m biased but a maple fretboard is the way to go
trogly, dya reckon that the jim adkins telecasters were the pre troublemaker, troublemaker teles?
Wow that's cool,love white telecasters
SWEET!🤘👍
The neck pickup has nice cleans. If the pickups were different/better I'd have no complaints.
The truss rod adjustment not being easily accessible would be a deal breaker for me. Too bad, because otherwise it seems to be a great guitar.
Is the Bass short scale?
No, full 34"
Check SCANDAL out. They are fab. Shoujo S is a classic.
I like the Zemaitis they use.
i want my prize! NOW!!!
Oh yes! It is a classic!
Thank god, something besides a Gibson!
Are you not doing the chapters int the video anymore?
hey Austin , may i asK a question about your video , is you or editor slightly speed up whole video but playing domo ?? it sounds talking little bit fast and hurry, is cut out all the space word between word..? just for curious, its not a negative comment.
Damn J Rock chicks got great taste!
12:03 Trogly got a looper
During the transition with fender coming back to the US in the early 80's there were some amazing Japanese strats out there. I owned one that I still kick myself for letting go. This doesn't really sound like Tele, more like a Tele wanna be. Those dc's sound kind of weak. The neck pick up had some cool clean tones. I haven't looked but I bet it's overpriced because of the artist model thing. It is a beautiful guitar, I'll give it that.
I'm not much of a fender person but I do like that tele
Something about the telecasters I do like but I just don't care for the other style that fender has sorry fender fans I'm not trying to take anything away from your instruments I personally don't like them I know they're good I know they've been around for years I personally don't like fender not saying they're not a wonderful instrument because we wouldn't have some of the amazing bands that we have today if we did not have fender like Pink Floyd that's all they use is fender Jimi Hendrix that's pretty much all he used was fender so I know in the right hands they are amazing instruments so no hate no hate I just personally don't like them that's all but for this telecaster I think it looks very good and I would honestly buy one
The fact of the matter is these Japanese telecasters play with the quality of Gibson's goddamn near most of the time they are of incredible quality!
