  • Locks & Quays Series 3 - Coast to Coast. Matthew Corbett travels from Hull to Liverpool on rivers and the famous Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Originally broadcast on ITV in 2008 (not all regions). This is a VHS transfer so is not perfect but it was never released on video or DVD and I am yet to locate a better copy. It is edited to remove the ad breaks/intros/welcome back etc and some of the misc features not relevant to where he is travelling. This is to attempt to give it a single travel film feel, rather than 10 individual episodes with random bits thrown in. Part 1 covers the Yorkshire leg of the journey (Eps 1-5). Enjoy

What a lovely program and as such does not need that constant noise sometimes drowning out the precious dialogue , Thanks Mr Corbett

As a young boy, I had only seen pictures and drawings of such scenery in books and wondered how if all this was for real or just the imagination of the artists. I can now see what inspired them. Thanks for the wonderful glimpses of your beautiful country.

Matthew, I really enjoy your travels and watching the trip on the Leeds to Liverpool canal I was thrilled to hear you are from Guiseley. I'm a Guiseley Lad who left England in 1972. I love to watch programs depicting Yorkshire and hope one day I can return to the home of my childhood. Harry Ramsdens was a favorite spot where we would gather on our motor bikes roaring up and down Bradford road annoying the neighbours and police. When I heard you were from Guiseley with a last name of Corbet I though maybe you were related to Harry Corbet the Sooty puppeteer.

😂 this isn't Mathews channel just a program somebody uploaded on theirs . Mathew was the sooty puppeteer ,from my generation anyway,, he even mentioned it at the beginning. But yes Harry was his dad.

This is some good history. I live near the Arkansas River which is a primary tributary of the Mississippi River. There are huge locks and dams. They run barges that are 200ft long up and down the Arkansas. The ones on the Mississippi can be a quarter mile long.

Great to see Matthew again, thought he'd gone back to his original name as Peter, but guess for TV purposes it had to be Matthew. Shame no Sooty with him, but he;s not a bad presenter without Sooty and there was a reference 4:48

To anyone watching this who is contemplating narrowboating or any other form of boating - please, please, please, never tie yourself to a boat in a lock (or anywhere else for that matter) as seen at 38:37 - this is extremely foolhardy and dangerous.

Canal building in UK and beyond is such an astonishing feat of engineering and manpower that it is far more likely we inherited canals from a previous high civilisation as per mudflood theory by Martin Liedke. The narrative of Irish navvies is probably to cover up they simply dug the canals out of the mud after whatever floods caused the lower floors of buildings all over Europe, The world and in UK to be buried in metres of mud. Look around your towns and cities and look for buried floors and windows and doors that literally make no sense. Whatever destroyed the Roman civilisation was an apocalypse type event and perhaps in the intervening time rivers flooded and storm surges buried the towns and cities. Looks like humans were reintroduced to a world that had undergone some major resets. Look it up. Use your eyes. It’s all around you ;)

I lost our boat on the L&L. It was a very windy day; my husband was on the other side of the canal closing the swing bridge and I was holding the boat waiting for him. The wind gusted - the boat blew away from the side - my feet went from under me on the muddy ground - I ended up flat on my back being dragged towards the edge - so I let go of the rope, but the boat kept going till it hit the other side.

37:40 you state that a "traditional" canal deserves a traditional narrowboat. Narrowboats were not used on the L&L canal. Shortboats were the workhorses of the canal.
